good morning. we are approaching 4:31. i'm jon kelley. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. let's get to the forecast with meteorologist christina loren. >> good morning. you definitely want to leave early. yesterday morning we had showers coming down that were light and this morning, same deal. light showers. however, we picked up one to two inches of rain in some bay area cities. santa cruz mountains were soaked. oakland almost picked up an inch of rain. more on the radar this morning. we will track the showers as we progress through the next couple of hours. i will let you know when you get a break and when our next strong storm rolls into the bay. first mike has a downed tree this morning. >> that's right. when you talk about all the rain we had over the last day and so the rain soaked hills could be an issue. right here this is officially cupertino city limits. near the edge of saratoga. this is stevens canyon road where it turns into eden road. that's -- not major commute spot but it is an issue with a downed tree. bolders in the road with some as large as bowling balls.

that could be factor here as well as other spots around the bay. you can see it is not a major issue, highway 5. 280 moving slowly. woe will follow this as we have that type of incident we expect to hear. more reports of that as folks hit the roadways. south bay freeway, clear right now. thank you very much. all of this rain continues. so does the ricks of mudslides and falling trees. >> just as mike mentioned this is a home in fairfax. huge trees fell and crushed the house late yesterday. luckily no one was hurt. it gave the neighbors a shock. >> i heard a sound that was like a -- jet plane. i said what the bleep was that? maybe a jet plane going by. then i saw it was an earthquake. looked around, came out. neighbors on the street. saw the tree on the ground. >> we appreciate yourself bleeping. another tree fell on a home and experts say that the saturated ground makes trees especially

vulnerable. rain here means snow in the sierra. look at i-80 heading to tahoe. you can barely see winter storm warnings still in effect this morning. we could see one to two feet of snow in some parts of the sierra. take your chains. counselors will be at an east bay school this morning helping students cope with the sudden death of a 14-year-old classmate. christie smith live in the bay. good morning. >> reporter: as you can imagine, students and teachers are absolutely grief stricken over this. student athlete, he was playing a sport he collapsed and died. he was taken to eden medical center and pronounced dead there. today there will be grief counselors here for the students as well as teachers who might need it. also, students are being encouraged to wear blue. that's the school color to honor the memory of the 14-year-old.

he collapsed while playing basketball during pe. friends are changing their facebook pages in his honor. he's the youngest of ten children. he was a hard-working student with a bright future ahead playing football and the loss is just heartbreaking. >> it is hard. hard. because -- you don't expect it. you don't see anything like this come -- you never want to expect anything like this where a child -- someone so humble and just so respectful, just gone. >> firefighters say the distress call first came in as a seizure. they came but just weren't able to revive him. the school posted information about the tragedy on its website and offered condolences to his family. reporting live in hayward, christie smith, today in the bay. 12 days and still no sign of morgan hill's sierra lamar.

volunteer searches will continue today. yesterday hundreds of people fanned out over a wide area to look for the signs of the teenager. investigators now say it was highly unlikely sierra ran away. after detectives interhave you had more than 100 of her friends and family they determined that sierra was most likely abdetectived. her disappearance has shaken the community. >> sierra was much older than my daughter but to think that could be her, it is frightening, absolutely frightening. >> sierra's parents are helping the public donate money to the fund at any chase bank. the money will be used to help pay for the cost of the search and a reward for information leading to sierra's recovery. a mother, son and daughter being laid to rest today in gilroy. the victims after tragic murder/suicide. funeral for abel and martha gutierrez and sarah will be held this morning at st. mary's pair official 1st in gilroy. investigators say 27-year-old

abel gutierrez shot his mother and his younger sister before finally killing himself on march 14. gutierrez was an iraq war veteran and place say me showed signs of post traumatic stress disorder. a man accused in a murder in san francisco will be in court facing murder charges. he's charged with five murders with special circumstances. that means he could face the death penalty if convicted. we now have pictures featuring two of the five people he is suspected of killing. lei and his daughter. highly regarded software engineer in emeryville. police still have not revealed any kind of motive for the killing. a man turned himself in for causing an accident that killed a college basketball player. the 19-year-old died. prosecutors charged dennis lefue with vehicular man slaughter and driving p under the influence. he is expected to enter a plea

next week. a san francisco church is joining the dialogue in the florida death of trayvon martin. a special rally will be held tonight in honor of martin. church leaders are inviting community leaders to share their thoughts and solutions for breaking what they call the cycles of racism in the u.s. martin was shot and killed in florida last month by neighborhood watch captain george zimmerman. zimmerman claims that it was self-defense. and has not been charged with a crime. it is 4:37 now. palo alto police reaching out the to the community you to fight a string of robberies. police will talk to the community members about recent break-ins and arrests and ways to protect their homes. more 507b homes in palo alto have been broken into so far this year. tonight's community meeting is the s at walter hayes elementary school starting at 7:00. and we could move a step closer to learning the contents of an investigate itch reports into that infamous pepper spray incident at uc davis.

a judge hearing more arguments today on whether to release all of the findings. the judge previously decided the university can release only parts of that report. the campus police union trying to keep under wraps some of the information claiming there is personal information there about the officers involved. early easter gift for bay area food banks. egg farmers are donating more than 64,000 eggs to local food banks today. more than two-thirds of them will go to the second harvest food bank. fresh eggs are an important donation to the food banks because they are high in protein and other knew truenutrients. >> 4:38. let's send it to meteorologist christine loren to find out how much rain we will be in store for. >> you know, not all that much. bulk of the moisture has come through but it came through probably while you were sleeping. we have a lot come through the south bay overnight. fake a look at some of the totals. one to two inches in the santa

cruz mountains. saturated and breezy. we could see more downed trees this morning. mike and i are watching those for you. we picked almost an inch of rain in oakland. san mateo, three-quarters of an inch. even in my city, campbell, we almost came in with half an inch of rain. we have more on the way as we speak, little bit of shower activity out there. but i think the bigger component this morning you have to deal with are gusty winds. gusting from 15 to 30 miles per hour from time to time. sustained strong as well. and ten miles per hour in fairfield. winds will be a factor this morning. still have light scattered showers on the radar. nothing too heavy. showers will continue to move to the east. as we head throughout the morning. but we are going to get a bit of a break. got to wait for the rest of the moisture to our north to pass through. all works out like this for today. 57 degrees, very light spotty showers through noon. you will get sunshine by 4:00 p.m. 63 degrees inland and 60 in san francisco. and at 4:00 p.m. you make your way home from work. another storm system on the way. before it hits, we are going to

romney say somebody stole laptops and ipads containing campaign information on romney's trip through california. he wrapped up russ is its in the bay area and down in southern california. spokesperson confirmed last friday somebody did break into an suv down in san diego and stole the device which is belonged to two romney staffers. the campaign calls the theft an inconvenience but says they are not worried about the release of any sensitive information. >> final day of testimony in the supreme court health care case. what the justices will discuss today. also, a plane making an emergency landing after the pilot has a meltdown. how passengers just jumped right into action mid flight. a texas man says his phone number was hijacked by justin bieber. what the singer did that could get him in legal trouble. se no. >> baby, baby.

is because it requires the individual to do an affirmative act. >> justice kennedy has always recognized that the reason we limit federal power is to protect individual liberty. >> the courts today considering whether the government can expand medicaid health insurance for low-income americans. the decision expected sometime in june right in the middle of the campaign. it is 4:45 now. jet blue pilot now in fbi custody in texas after a mid air meltdown. the plane was flying from new york to las vegas when the captain began acting strangely. co-pilot convinced the captain to leave the cockpit, take a break. that's when things got out of control. >> out of his mind. screaming and saying to the passengers say your prayers, say your prayers. >> video taken by a witness show passengers jumping up to subdue the pilot while the plane made an emergency landing. the pilot is now receiving medical care. more anger and mistrust in the bay area muslim community

following revelations in newly released fbi documents. documents obtained by the aclu show fbi agents documented activities within bay area mosques between 2004 and 2008. the information reveals agents documented ethnicities, religious services, even the kind of fruit sold during community outreach programs. >> feel that we have been portrayed by the fbi. we opened up our doors and invited them in. they were secretly collecting this nothings and using it for what purpose, we don't know. >> the fbi says that the information was collected within the scope of an authorized law enforcement activity. spring home buying season could be getting off to a positive on start according to the latest data. for more on that, we turn to jackie deangelis at cnbc headquarters. >> hi, good morning. futures are a touch high they are morning after the market ran out of steam yesterday.

investors gave a muted reaction to economic data on home prices and consumer confidence. they decided to take a rest from the recent rally. asian markets were lower overnight. european markets also in the red this morning. here in the u.s. we get a report today on demand for durable goods. threes the big ticket items like planes, trains, automobiles. we saw the dow losing 43 points on tuesday to close at 13,197. s in dakota slipping two points to 3120. meantime, ceo toll brothers say conditions are looking good in the housing market especially for the high end. remember, toll specializes in luxury homes. the company's ceo tells cnbc con soulers who have been sitting on the sidelines for five years more confident thanks in part to incredibly low mortgage rates. natural gas prices are at a ten-year low. due in part to the mild winter we had. the northeast and midwest. record supplies have helped trooif prices down nearly 16% just this month. and analysts are saying the

supply glut could push some utilities to switch from pricier coal to natural gas to generate power during the summer months. back over to you. >> okay. thank you very much for the report. anxious to check in with meteorologist christina loren. a look at our forecast this morning. >> yes. always the day after it rains people want to know when lit stop raining. we actually have that information included in your forecast. we are going to get more rain as we head through this weekend and another potent storm on the way. that's good news because we are still running a deficit in terms of our average rainfall. but this so far a rather wet spring across the bay area. we head throughout this weekend, more rain on the way. this morning, getting tail end. residual showers from the front that came through yesterday. you can see mostly concentrated down through the south bay. spotty activity up north. little bit of this will slide to the south. whatever able s able to maintain organization. we will see that over the next couple of hours. by noon, starting to get partial clearing, sun coming out of the greater bay area. temperatures are running mild this morning as well. look at this. 54, 55 degrees just about
