showers streaming onshore. especially in the south bay. that's where the bulk of what's left of the front is concentrated. you can see we held more moisture up to our north and that will pass through the bay area as we head throughout this afternoon. by 4:00 p.m. we are talking about sunshine over the greater bay area. mostly clear conditions before our next system rolls in. time that out for you. let you know what that means for the weekend, after all this is the day we start thinking about it. wednesday. check your drive with mike. >> i think about it any time. we are looking at the golden gate bridge because after the rain we are worried about leftovers and also the next system you are talking about. looking at the sheen on the roadway and slick conditions especially those off ramps, be careful. light in volume. keeps things moving across the san mateo bridge, smooth drive as well. no major issues, even off to the right lit up yesterday with the wind advisories, not today. the san mateo and bay bridges reporting a slow drive. >> thank you very much, mike. it is 5:01 now. volunteers, searchers will be out again this morning looking for morgan hill sierra lamar.

detectives now say that it is highly unlikely the teenager ran away. bob redell is live in morgan hill this morning with the focus of the investigation and how it has changed. good morning, bob. >> yeah, good morning to you. this will be day two of the first ever volume tear search being run out of burnett elementary at morgan hill. as the sheriff's office believes that it is highly unlikely that the 15-year-old girl, sierra lamar, ran away. that instead they believe someone most likely abducted her two friday mornings ago. investigators reached in conclusion after interviewing more than 100 of her family and friends. finding she had a good family life with no reason to leave home. yesterday more than 500 people from the community volunteered to look for evidence surrounding her disappearance. part of that search focused on the reservoir, a few miles from the family home. but so far no clues. >> i was truly taken by all the

efforts, you know, and -- it is definitely -- recognized and -- it is helping me and helping sierra. >> you can help in finding sierra by donating to a brand-new search and rescue fund set up by the family at any chase bank. you can also register to volunteer for the search start thing morning at 8:00 at burn el elementary. you must be 18 years old. the klaas foundation is running this effort under the guidance of the sheriff's office. they plan to do it through sunday. investigators are also asking people who live around here to report any suspicious activity. maybe you know someone that recently all of a sudden changed their appearance. someone who excessively cleaned their car, missed days at work unexpectedly, or maybe they are obsessing over the media coverage of this story or avoiding it altogether. things to look out for is what investigators are asking you to do.

funeral services being held for three members of a gilroy family killed in an appear end murder-suicide. abel, martha and sarah gutierrez all died two weeks ago. police believe abel killed his mother and 11-year-old sister before committing suicide. family members say that the 27-year-old iraq war veteran may have been suffering from post traumatic stress disorder. services being held at st. mary's parish starting at 10:00 this morning. yes, they are open to the public. it could take several weeks before authorities know the cause of death for 16-year-old boy found dead in his cell at the juvenile justice center. he was alone when he was found early monday. a preliminary autopsy was inconclusive. his name was the reason he was being held has not been released. 5:04 now. string of robberies in one east bay city prompting a warning this morning oakland police say they are investigating street robberies in that downtown area. two men riding bikes have robbed at least four people over the past week. no weapons were used, however.

anybody with information is asked to please call oakland police. officers are reminding people to be aware of your surroundings and make sure to stay in a well-lit and populated area and always, always be alert to entering and exiting a car. suspected serial killer joseph naso is due back in court this morning to set a trial date. he is expected to ask the judge to dismiss the charge against him. he is accused of killing four women between 1977 and 1994. he's representing himself in the case but does have a lawyer helping him prepare for that trial. this one will be wild scene. jet blue pilot who suffered a mid air meltdown in and now an fbi custody and receiving medical care. today in the bay's mar la tel-- marla tellez. >> he suffered a medical situation in mid air. now the co-pilot of flight 191 is being hailed a hero. the plane was flying from new

york to las vegas when the captain began acting jittery pushing buttons and even at one point screaming, quote, they are going to take us down. the co-pilot able to convince the captain to leave the cockpit so he can lock him out and that's when handful of passengers took control and subdued him. >> just out of his mind. screaming and saying to the passengers, say your prayers are say your prayers. >> the plane made an emergency landing in texas and the passengers hop order another flight. no one was hurt. the pilot right here, medical history now, is under review by the fbi. and the faa. pope benedict xvi in havana with a mass and meeting with fidel castro. the former cuban leader announcing late last night he would happily meet with benedict as he did with john paul ii in 1998. he hopes to revive the catholic faith and communist -- in the communist-run country. take a look at this

explosive video out of thailand. a fireworks factory went up in flames. sending people running for their lives. it took 20 fire trucks several hours to bring the fire under control. hard to believe but officials say that no one died, laura. no one even got hurt. >> that's amazing. luckily no one was hurt. thank you very much. 0:07 p. scandal involving police was bigger than first reported. chief michael me had an apologized herlier this month for sending a sarnlgsent to the home of a reporter in the middle of the night to complain about a story and demand a correction. now the paper roaring two other media outlets got e-mails from them complain being their coverage. 2 it was about a murder of a berkeley hills portion man. letters have been written to the postal service expressing interest in the historic

building on hamilton avenue. the building, one of hundreds around the country, being said off to try to save money. council members will vote on an official sometime next month. leaders say they want to make sure that the landmark building built in 1932 actually stays in the city's hands. 5:08. rainy weather not expected to affect as many flights in san francisco international this morning. airport spokesperson says flights are expected to be on time this morning. same can not be said for yesterday. when there were rival and departure delays of more than an hour. 148 flights were actually canceled. >> wow. that's a lot coming down. christina loren says expect a break today before we get more rain later in the week. >> not just the rain. it was the wind as well. really gusty winds simultaneously while that rain was coming down. so we had 3.5 hour delays on sfo yesterday. we are not talking about rain or wind wind delays today. we have potential for fog to develop. we will be watching for the low ceilings for you.

and continuously check with the faa all morning. let you know how flights coming in and out if they are on time. breezy conditions for us today. not wind write. wind gusts will catch from time to time. 15 to 30 miles per hour. and that means it may get dangerous over your local bridges. you want to keep that in mind. rain showers to continue on shore in the south bay. very light and they are winding down. we are going to see the pattern as we head through the next few hours. by noon today partial clearing and by 5:00 p.m., mostly clear conditions over the greater bay area. just a little built more shower activity to get through that. up to the north at almost south as you head throughout the day today. futurecast tells the story. stop the clock at 5:00 p.m. mostly dry, clear over the greater bay area. cloud cover at that time. and we will have to deal with fog. additional moisture. as you wake up tomorrow morning, hey, we are talking about the mid 60s. 65 degrees today in san jose. and the good news is we are going to dry out just in time for the end of the weekend and next week which is spring break for a lot of kids. you will be able to get them outdoors. i will let you know when the best day will be.

never in my lifetime did i think i could walk 60 miles in 3 days. 60 miles in 3 days is-- is huge. if my mom can fight and beat breast cancer, i can walk 60 miles. you just put one foot in front of the other, and you know that you're walking for such a great cause that you just keep going. and winter storm warning in effect this morning. we did check with caltrans and chains right now are being required for use on 80 and on 50. the snow is coming fast and furious. >> no kidding. let's see how long. checking in with christina loren. >> that system that came through here, takes its time traveling over to the sierra nevada. it will dump snow in the higher elevations pretty much all day long. take a look at the temperatures. something i have almost never seen since i have been here in the bay area. micro climate, you know, they definitely distinguish themselves in the morning hours but this morning, take a look at your temperatures. 54 degrees, between 52 and 54. that's because of the cloud cover. cold air that moves in yesterday. uniformed conditions across the bay area. warm in san francisco as it is in places like concord now. very unusual to see that. smours will linger for the morning hours. sierra snow travel very treacherous for today.

as we told you, the snow will be falling just about all day long. you want to take it easy if you are going to be headed up there to enjoy fresh powder. make sure have you the chains. travel cautiously. another storm on the way. more rain to the bay area. more snow to tahoe as we head through this weekend. you can see right now we still have light scattered showers. especially through san jose. some of the hours are starting to develop up in the east bay now as well. you may find slick conditions along 80 as you wake up this morning. give yourself plenty of time to reach your destination of the highways still nice and slick from this system that came through yesterday. so we are going to see the residual showers the first part of the day. clearing the second half of the day. tomorrow some cities will hit 70 degrees. high pressure builds in quickly. so few 70s tomorrow. even warmer as we kick off friday. good news because it also kicks off spring break for a lot of kids across the bay area. 62 degrees by sunday. that's when you can get them outdoors comfortably. 66 by monday. 68 degrees, climbing slowly all the way through next week. let's check your drive. i'm sure mike will be busy this

morning. >> we are busy. scattered showers but those scattered spring breaks now for the next month or so around the bay area so that's also making things lighter in some of your commute spots. that's what some folks are asking yesterday. north down south bay, easy drive. we have tree down. on the west side of stevens creek reservoir. not major commute spot. downed trees and rocks on roadway which is where -- report here may be more common as far as the reports do coming in as more folks hit the roadway. north of saratoga. 101 and 280, smooth drive up and down. 84, dunbarton bridge. no overnight work because of the rain. we will jump the maps over to livermore. looking at the commute time. 14 minutes ute of the pass. rain hitting portions of your east bay. 680 moves slowly as far as the speed senors go. moving closer to the cass

traffic valley, 880, smooth drive. live look outside. not actively raining. still may need to use the windshield wipers. >> thank you so much, mike. markets looking to bounce back after a tough tuesday for a look at how your futures are trading. rest of your news before the bell. good morning, jackie. >> touch higher this morning important the futures after the market ran out of p steam yesterday. muted reaction to some of the economic data we saw on home prices and consumer confidence. deciding to take a bit of a rest from the recent rally. asian markets lower overnight. european markets and in the red this morning. here in the u.s. we are going get a report today on demand for durable goods. big ticket items like planes, trains, automobiles. we saw the dow lose 43 points

tuesday. the nasdaq within two points. on the same day the online retailer began selling digital versions of the harry potter series the buy buttons in the kindle e store disappeared for several hours. instead of people being able to purchase the book, people saw green buttons saying this title is not available for customers in the united states. amazon wasn't commenting but post on the kindle publishing forum says a website issued definitely. >> thanks important the update. investigators right now looking for your help solving one of the worst cases of animal abuse ever seen right here in the bay area. two severely neglected dogs discovered friday morning in a carport at the p an apartment complex on cherry avenue in san bruno. the dogs being described as terrier mixes. they had to be euthanized because they were so badly abused. one dog had a broken front leg and the other was also injured and severely malnourished.

welcome back, everyone. live look at the supreme court in washington, d.c., this morning. keeping our eyes on there. and health care reform as it has been in the limelight lately. more coming up. plans to . very first vote today. the commission deciding whether to recommend spending $467 million in practical funds for this project. that's about a third of the total cost. the rest of the money will then have to come from the state. they want to finish the project by 2019 in anticipation of sharing the tracks with the bullet train. >> it is 5:23 right now.

desperate plea for your help from bay area food banks this morning. they say their reply from holiday food drives will only last them through the end of this week. what's worse, demand is expected to spike next month when kids are home from spring break. the next major food drive is not until mid may. the national letter carriers drive. the alameda county food bank says it needs nonperishable items. in particular, such as canned goods. there is a little help on the way. california egg farmers donating more than 64,000 eggs to local food banks today. most of them will go to the second harvest of santa clara and san mateo county. the fresh eggs will be donated this morning. 5:24 now. another ipo on tap this morning. scott mcgrew, living like it is 1999. >> yeah, ipos move in two steps. pricing and then the actual frayed. price of shares last night above expected range. this morning expected executives

will ring the opening bell on wall street. and trading in that stock will begin shortly thereafter. new shares don't necessarily begin trading right at the start of the trading day. makes communications systems for hospitals. cook continues his swing through client a this morning. one headline says chinese workers complaining mr. cook doesn't give them enough -- gives they too much time off making ipads and iphones. factories which build apple products have been criticized for working peopleing to hard but many workers actually ask for more time on the line. waiting for the president to sign the jobs act passed by the house for the second time on tuesday, the house adopted some of the consumer protections added by the senate. and as we have discussed before the jobs act radically change it is way the businesses raise money. speaking of the president he just joined pinterest. he is a member of facebook and twitter. one of things he has pinned is the family recipe for chili.

laura garcia-cannon. >> good morning, everybody. i'm jon kelley. let's get to and it check in with meteorologist christina loren. >> yeah. get right to it is right. give yourself plenty of time to reach your destination safely this morning as we still have slick highways and the winds have calmed down substantially overnight. they are still rather gusty from time to time. keep that in mind as your high profile vehicle as you get ready to hit the highway. san jose getting the bulk of the moisture of what's left of the front that came through. more rain on the way as we head through the weekend. we will hit the 70s first. we will check the drive. >> with that rain we have the leftovers. that is what's the issue for the north bay. sonoma county, flooding, closed the freeway. just reopened. 121, again reopened between highway 16 and highway 12. i thought it was going to be another couple of hours and so did road crews out there. surprised us all. great work up there. again, open. live look. golden gate bridge, sheen on the

roadway, wet roads continue off ramps an issue this morning. slow down as you exit the freeway even though you are excited to get to work. >> exactly. take it easy. thank you very much. 5:30. man accused in a brutal mass murder in san francisco is due to make his first court appearance today. prosecutors have charged bin ti luk with five murders with special circumstances. that means he could face the death penalty if convicted. we now have pictures of two of the five people he is us expected of killing. hua shun lei and his daughter, highly regarded software engineer. police still have not revealed a motive for the killings but say luc knew the victims. a san jose man turned himself in for allegedly causing an accident that called a college basketball player. the 19-year-old gaines died last november when the car he was riding in was hit on the 101 in milbrae.

prosecutors now charging dennis lefew with vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence. he's expected to enter his plea next week. volunteer searches resume in a few hours for sierra lamar. the teenager disappeared 12 days ago. bob redell is live in morgan hill where police are now characterizing the case as an abduction. >> yes. good morning to you. after interrug more than 100 of her family and friends, investigators now believe that it is highly unlikely that sierra lamar ran away. instead they believe it was more likely the 15-year-old was abducted 12 days ago before she ever made it to school. here's where investigators say they now need your help. they are asking to report any suspicious activity. this could be someone who obsesses over media coverage of the case or just avoids it altogether. maybe you know someone who missed work unexpectedly, suddenly changed their appearance, or excessively cleaned their car. you can also help by coming here to burnett elementary to

volunteer in the search for sierra lamar. yesterday more than 500 people showed up to search areas not searched before or to give some places a once-over. many of these people don't know the lamar family personally but have children of their own and would hope strangers would help them if their kid disappeared. the klaas foundation is running this operation under the guidance of the santa clara county sheriff's office. they will be doing it from roughly 8:00 to 1:00. you have to register here before being sent out to the field. you must be 18 years old or older. and also, the family set up a brand-new search and rescue fund for sierra lamar. so if you want to donate money you can donate to any chase bank. they have the funds set up there. reporting live in morgan hill, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> we could be moving a step closer in learning the contents of an investigative report into that now infamous pepper spray incident at uc davis.

alameda county judge hearing more arguments today on whether to release all of the findings. the judge previously decided the university can release only parts of that report. the campus police union trying to keep it under wraps. claiming there's personal information in it about the officers involved. >> 5:34 now. palo alto police will reach out to the community today to help combat a rash of burglaries. police will talk to community members about recent burglary arrests and ways to protect their homes. more than 50 homes in palo alto have been broken into this year alone. tonight's meeting is at walter hayes elementary at 7:00 it is 5:34 now. meteorologist christina loren telling us, yes, the umbrellas may get a break but keep them handy. >> yeah. keep them handy. you also want to keep the shades handy. we are going to see sunshine and 70s. not just tomorrow. friday as well. hen we get another round of rain as we head through saturday. taking a live look at the golden gate bridge. you can see the highway nice and slick this morning in addition

to the rain. and we also have winds. they have calmed down quite a bit from last night. they were just whipping through the south bay. and at this point we are still sustained at 10 miles per hour. oakland, for example, east-southeast. nine miles per hour in san jose. still on the breezy side with gusts to 15. 30 miles per hours from time to time. juan to keep that in mind when you get the 30 miles per hour wind gusts. could be dangerous over the local high-profile vehicles. travel slowly, that's best way to stay safe. you can see we have spotty showers. not a lot of action but enough to get your highways are slick. even more so than they already are. one of those mornings you still want to leave early even though we are not getting major downpours at this point. we have active cells. you see that yellow embedded within the green moving through hayward. as you head throughout the day, stop the clock on the future cast at noon. getting partial clearing over the greater bay area. breaks of sun in the south bay. stop that clock at 5:00 p.m. mostly clear and mostly sunny over the greater bay area. all works out like this for today. up to 63 degrees at 4:00 p.m.

inland 60 by the bay. just a little bit cooler at the coast today. 59 degrees because of that mild start out there. let's check your drive. downed tree earlier. what's going on now? >> we do still have that downed tree in the south bay. i will show folks that issue. one to call out. right now we have a new accident. eastbound 80 heading away from the bay bridge. right around pal o. i saw the slowing for highway 24 away from 580 and the maze. only one lane open. that's a lot of slowing. likely more folks hitting the roadway and sensors adjusting. rain and wet roads may be playing with our sensors as well. watch the area around the bay. you are leaving the area because of the accidents around powell and highway 4 as we do for antioch, westbound direction. look at that down to the 20 as you are passing that l street sensor. into the 50s as you head bay point. an early start or a heavier commute coming off of highway 4. got my eyes on this. live look at 880. we always have our eyes on 880.

if this case should move to adult court. lane is facing six counts and including three counts of aggravated murder. that wind-driven wildfire just west of denver, colorado, continues to burn and threaten 6500 homes this morning. flames already blamed for at least two deaths. one person is reported missing and so far 4500 acres have burned. at least 16 homes have been destroyed. it all started as a prescribed burn in confer. close to 500 firefighters, john, are on the scene hoping the winds die down today. hopefully mother nature will help out. thank you very much. today marking the final day of arguments before the u.s. supreme court on the nation's health care reform law. tracie potts is on the steps of the supreme court right now live out there in d.c. what's the latest? >> reporter: good morning. the latest is that today we have arguments on two different issues. you me and everything else.

health insurance in this country. talked about it yesterday. today's issue is if you take it out of the health law, can the rest of the law stand? more popular provisions like covering young people up to age 26 or people with pre-existing conditions, that will be argued today. the other big portion argued later this afternoon is medicaid. a big expansion coming under the new health law but even though the federal government will initially bear the cost it will turn over the next decade to states for california and that can mean over $19 billion. 26 states will argue the federal government doesn't have the authority to do that. those are the arguments the justices will hear today. we are looking for a decision from them by june which, of course, is going to come right in the middle of a heated campaign season, jon. >> you got that right. thank you very much. republican presidential candidate newt gingrich watching donations dry up and now dumping staff members as a result. gingrich also fired his campaign
