did you hit any of the numbers? >> i did. of course, i'm here this morning. i will be trying again on friday. we have some good luck in the weather department if you are sick of the rain. getting a break from it later on today. we are going to see the sunshine. yeah. sun we have been missing the past few days. and as we head throughout this weekend, though, another storm system moves in before it left we are talking about 70s a couple of days. we will check your drive with mike. >> folks, we have an accident that was following in a lot of backup near the bay bridge. show you the maps and this was westbound 580 approaching interstate 80. but now all of the slow we saw cleared the traffic break and debris reportedly cleared. as for 580, highway 13 near the middle of your screen reports of a tree down at lincoln avenue. just after you make the split from 580 and blocking your slow lane. we are watching that. slow lane is blocked and will let you know as it arrives. sadly there is an autopsy planned today trying to figure

out exactly how a teenager died while playing basketball in an east bay middle school. christie smith is there live roup good morning to you. grief counselors were here briefly on campus yesterday. they are going to be back again today to help students deal with this horrible loss. but also some substitute teachers will be here as well because the staff was with affected by this as well. popular student athlete collapsed and died and today many students are expected to wear blue the school colors, for 14-year-old langey, hayward school district said the eighth grader collapsed yesterday morning while playing basketball during a pe class at cesar chavez middle school. friends are changing their facebook profiles in his honor. we are told he was the youngest of ten children. very humble and respectful with a bright future in football. >> very athletic.

he could have played for any school. lot of coaches was actually looking at him, middle scoop. he was being looked at by a lot of high school coaches. i'm sure as he got into high school he would be looked at by a lot of colleges. >> reporter: firefighters say the distress call initially came in as a possible seizure but paramedics were not able to revive him. there is a statement about what happened in this tragedy on the school website. and offering condolences to his family. reporting live in hayward, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> friends and family saying their fine a good-byes to three gilroy family members killed in an murder-suicide. funeral services being held for martha, abel and sarah gutier z gutierrez. police bref believe abel killed his mother and 11-year-old sister two weeks ago before turning that gun on himself. abel was an iraq war veteran that may have been suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. services will be held at st.

mary's parish at 8:00. it is open to the public. 12 days, still no sign of 15-year-old see air lamar. this morning volunteer searchers will be out looking for her once again. bob redell is live in morgan hill. this morning where police are now saying they don't think teenager ran away. good morning. >> reporter: yeah. good morning. day two of the all-volunteer search gets under way. was just couple of hours here at burnett elementary in morgan hill. this as the santa clara county sheriff's office is now saying it is highly unlikely that 15-year-old sierra lamar ran away. that instead it is probably more likely that someone abducted her two friday mornings ago. investigators reach thing conclusion after interviewing more than 100 of her family and friends. finding she has a good family life. with no reason to leave home. yesterday more than 500 people from the community volunteered to look for evidence surrounding her disappearance, part of that search focused on the reservoir,

a few miles from the family home here in morgan hill. so far no new clues. >> truly taken by all these efforts, you know, and -- and it is -- definitely recognized and it is helping me and helping sierra. >> reporter: a couple of ways you can help. you can help -- in the -- search for see air by donating to area search and rescue fund set up by the family. any chase bank. register to volunteer for the search itself start this morning at 8:00 at burnett elementary. you must be 18 years old or older. the klaas foundation is running the effort under the guidance of the sheriff's office through sunday. investigators are also asking people who live around here to report any suspicious activity. maybe you know of someone that suddenly changed the way they look, excessively cleaned their car, missed days at work unexpectedly. or are -- obsessing over the

media coverage or ignoring it altogether. investigators say if you see anything like that, it would be helpful for you to call them. bob redell, "today in the bay." string of robberies has police issuing warn thing morning. several people have been targeted on the street by two men riding bikes. there have been no reports so far in the use of weapons. anybody who has information is asked to contact the oakland police. as a safety reminder police are asking you to always be aware of your surroundings and make sure to stay in a well-lit and populated areas. and be alert when entering and exiting your vehicle. >> scandal involving berkeley's police chief was even bigger than first reported. chief michael mehan apologized earlier this month for sending a sergeant to the home of a reporter in the middle of the night to complain about a story and demand a correction. now the contra costa times is reporting two other media outlets got e-mails from mehan

complain about their coverage. the stories in question dealt with a murder of a berkeley hills man and police response. today the final day of arguments before the u.s. supreme court on the new health care law at issue today, can the law stand if key parts are struck down? can the government expand low-income insurance if states have to bear the cost. 26 states are argue they can't afford this and the government shouldn't force them to. if the court upholds the health law, lawmakers across the street say that they are ready to act. >> it is our job to make sure that that bill is never implemented. we are going to reject it in congress and supreme court and this november we will reject it across america. >> for the record, justices decisions is expected in june. dozens of shelter dogs leaving the south bay this morning. part of a nationwide march madness adoption event. 82 chihuahuas are being sent to vancouver, washington. organizers say that there are

as we head throughout the day today, we are watching now from the development of fog. we told you yesterday we had the delays out of sfo. up to 3 1/2 hours at one point. that was because of wind and rain. this morning, we have about hour delays out of sf sxo because of low ceilings. we have ten miles of visibility just about everywhere. we are starting to see that fog develop. we will con to check visibility. looks pretty good. low ceilings at 1,500 feet this morning. by noon today, getting a nice break from the rain. you can see just very light spotty showers along the coast. we will continue to clear out as we head throughout the afternoon. sunshine on the way for today. some cities hitting mid 60s. 63 comfortable degrees at 4:00 p.m. jump up to 60 by about 4:00 p.m. it will be nice today. you probably do want to dress in layers. tomorrow you can break out the tank top if you want. we have 70s in the forecast. that rainy told you about, time it all out for you. 610. >> some folks trying to break

out of this slowdown but we can't. highway 4. westbound is your commute direction. that's where i'm circling. consolidated right here toant sxwrok bay point looking really good. look at the bottom portion of that map as well. we have east down highway 4. also slowing and that's holding steady into the area where we see that source. no incidents reported there. that's unusual for the counter commute direction. there may be construction work going on. unlikely because of the overnight rain. we do have 22-minute drive out of the pass. heading into livermore, things looking good through pleasanton partially because of an accident that held folks up around springtown. accident scene clearing and slowdown spreading for the entire spretretch of the 580. 92, little slow through the san mateo hills. that will clear up as the commute settles down. over the bay looking at san mateo brigitte self, no problems for the 92 drive. glow of lights. slicker roadways around in many

welcome back, everyone. 6:14 now. new this morning, we now know the name of the jet blue pilot who had that mid air meltdown that was taken down bypass enjers. the ceo and president of jet blue just released new information to nbc. marla tellez is following the story. >> reporter: talk about a public

relations nightmare for the airline. dave barger came out and identified the captain as clayton ozbon. a consummate profession while he has personally known for years. if you missed it, the captain was flying the plane from new york to vagus what he began acting erratically even ran through the cabin screaming about iraq, afghanistan, and al qaeda. handful of passengers were able to restrain him until the plane made an emergency landing in texas. the pilot is in fbi custody today and medical history is now under review by the faa but jet blue's ceo saying this morning that there's nothing in his record to indicate he could be a risk. coming up on the "today" show, an interview with the airline's ceo and matt lauer. also new this morning, the judge making a decision about that suspected shooter in the deadly high school rampage that left three students dead in ohio. within the last 30 minutes, the judge ordering a mental competency exam for 17-year-old t.j. lane. lane is facing six counts,

including three counts of aggravated murder for the february 27 shooting. firefighters in colorado hoping to winds will die down in their battle to control the wildfire near denver. that's now blamed for at least two deaths. it is threatening some 6500 homes this morning. already destroyed at least 16 home and charred about 4500 acres. initially about 100 firefighters responded to the scene. now close to 500 firefighters are battling it. let's hope that mother nature continues for them today. >> most definitely. thank you. yesterday a lot of rain and lot of wind delaying a lot of folks at sfo. today a break. >> fog settling in. we have delays. you will get the faye's main page across the entire nation. all the major airports featured there, the only one with delays is sfo. so go figure. make sure you are ready for that if you are picking someone up this morning that could be problematic for you. low ceilings. wind dropping off, fog is settling in.

we still have showers moving through. and especially the east shore. pretty good looking cell developing to the north of san leandro. general nature of the showers, very light and pesky. and not by any means widespread. they are very spotty this morning. that will continue to be the case. as you head through the next few hours by noon, partial clearing. by tonight, i think by about 5:00 p.m., as a matter of fact, we will see that sun come out. southwest wind at 6 miles per hour. breezy conditions. 15 to 30 miles per hour. keep that in mind. especially over your local bridges this morning where you saw that. the system will continue to move out and winds will be a little bit gusty for the next couple of hours. then really will drop off and could see pretty thick fog develop north bay. overall a.m. showers today and 70s as of thursday. what's going to happen is the jet stream is going to linger just to our north. as we head through friday morning, even thursday, we could get a bit of shower activity up into the north bay but overall high pressure will keep us nice and clear until late friday when

our next system moves in. enjoy this sunshine we have for today and tomorrow. even friday. 63 degrees in san jose today. high right by the water. closer to 58 degrees. and in places like san francisco, overall not looking too shabby. you tack on an additional five degrees and that's what we are expecting for tomorrow. all works out like this for the remainder of the week. showers late friday but look, we are going to hit 72 degrees inland before those showers arrive. then we swing your temperature down to 58 degrees on saturday. and not ideal for outdoor plans. sunday looking good. lots of shine. check your drive. >> we are looking at the volume start to bump up for the south bay. now this tree down, that's cleared from the canyon road. good news. bad news is whether volume starting to slow down. we have two accidents now reported. one at tully. that has been causing the slowdown as it was in the middle lane for 15 minutes. then a new one right here at capital expressway. that will cause more problem

because of the -- where the two lanes blocked and chp isn't there yet to help folks out for the roadways. expect bigger backup now for 101. second day in a row we had problems and we will see backup as it extends to this area. slowing because of the volume of traffic kicking in there. might see a shift of folks avoiding 85 and take that up. that will be back up and downtown. watch for that ripple effect. i will update you as the hours continue through the morning commute. right here we do still have this continuing. 580 at spring town. accident now center divide, distraction for these folks. still 22-minute drive out of the pass through livermore. and holding steady for pleasanton and dublin. that's good news there. as we move over to the bay bridge, no major issues. we have that tree down reported here and highway 13 northbound at lincoln. earlier accident should be cleared but not yet. 580 at 08. across bay good volume of traffic and metering lights should be on just about now. we see that lighter volume now coming up the incline. back to you. >> thanks so much, mishg.

many workers ask for more time on the line. we are waiting on the president to sign the jobs act passed by the house for the second time tuesday. the house adopted some of the consumer protections added by the senate. now we have discussed this before. jobs act not really about jobs. it radically change it is way the businesses can raise money. speaking of the president, he just joined pinterest. a member of facebook and twitter. among the things the president has pinned is this. the obama family chili recipe. nothing the president can do is without controversy. so among the comments about the guy's chili, one guy saying this is not how you make chili. some are upset the obamas serving it over rice, saying it transforms the dish. controversy over whether the president should use beans or not. i was than aware of that. one person asked for a vegan recipe as well. poor guy just posted chili recipe and then he -- you know. >> they are criticizing the red wine vinegar they are putting

dramatically over the next few. capital expressway likely getting more traffic there as well. and quick look at 880. volume builds to the toll plaza where metering lights are on. >> thank you very much, mike. 6:31 now. volunteers will gather again this morning to continue searching for sierra lamar. and now deputies are saying they are treating it as an abduction. not a runaway. bob redell live in morgan hill where there are a number of people being asked to help find the 15-year-old. good morning. >> reporter: one way is by volunteering to go out on the search day two of the volunteer effort. good morning to you, laura. they just opened the doors here at burnett elementary and they will start taking people in about an hour and a half. and after interviewing more than 100 of family and friends, the sheriff's office thinks it is high will you unlikely sierra lamar ran away. they believe it is more likely that the 15-year-old was abducted 12 days ago before she ever made it to school.

here's what investigators need your help with. they are asking you now to report any suspicious activity. this could be someone you have seen who obsesses over media coverage of this case. or avoids it altogether. maybe you know someone that missed work unexpectedly. suddenly changed their appearance or excessively cleans their cars. warning signs of suspicious activity. you can also help by coming here to the burnett elementary to volunteer in the search. yesterday more than 500 people showed up to search area not searched before or -- to give someplace as once-over. again, that search effort starting around 8:00. you must be 18 years old and you want to bring your i.d. and run to 1:00. this is being run by the klaas kids foundation. they plan on doing it every day through sunday. reporting live in morgan hill, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> 6:33. man accused in a brutal mass murder in san francisco due to make his first court appearance sometime today. the prosecutors charging luc with five murders of special circumstances. that means he could face the

death penalty if convicted. we now have pictures of two of the five people he is suspected of killing. highly regarded software engine engineer, hua shun lei. police still not revealing exact motive important the killings but say luc did know his victims. 6:34. suspected serial killer joseph due back in court this morning to setting a trial date. he is expected to ask the judge to dismiss the charges against him. he is accused of killing four northern california women between 1977 and 1994. he is representing himself in the case but does have a lawyer helping him prepare for that trial. the sudden death of a popular eighth grader has just stunned a hayward middle school. the 14-year-old boy collapsed and died during pe class just

yesterday. christie smith is live in hayward right now. an autopsy is planned today to try to determine exactly what happened here. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, jon. as you can imagine, students and teachers are completely distraught over this. this is a very popular student athlete here at cesar chavez middle school. he collapsed and died yesterday. there were grief counselors here yesterday and they are expected here again today. also students are expected to wear blue. that's the school colors. that's to honor the memory of the 14-year-old. he collapsed while playing basketball during pe yesterday morning at cesar chavez middle school. friends are changing their facebook pages in his honor. we are told he was the youngest of ten children. those that knew him said he was a hard working stun p with a bright dispute ahead of him playing football. the lows, just heartbreaking. >> surreal. it is hard.

it is hard because you just -- you don't expect it. you don't -- you don't see anything like this coming in and you never want to expect anything like this where a child and someone just so humble and just so respectful, you know, just -- gone. >> fire fighters say the distress call came in as a seizure. but they weren't able to remember vooif him. the school also posted information about the tragedy on its website today. and offered condolences to his family. reporting live in hayward, christie smith, "today in the bay." palo alto police are will reach out to the community to help combat a rash of burglaries. they will talk to community members about arrests and way to protect their homes. more than 50 homes in palo alto have been broken into this year alone. tonight's community meeting is at walter hayes elementary at 7:00. meteorologist christina loren tells us all this rain is causing delays at san francisco international airport this morning. along with a lot of fog out there. airport's spokesperson says low

visibility causes flights to arrive about an hour and 15 minutes late. yesterday lot of problems out there, arrival and departure delays more than an hour, total of 148 flights canceled. >> check in with christina right now. see how we are looking. >> added moisture and high pressure building in and compresses that moisture. so our next weather phenomenon is a development of fog. we are already noticing that this morning. in san francisco, south san francisco, picked up an inch and a quarter of rain yesterday. now this is a really substantial total for 24 hours. take a look at napa. santa rosa, over an inch and a half. we are doing pretty good job of taking a nice chunk out of that deficit. just about everywhere except for san jose. we will add 40% of normal for this time of year. we are doing a good job of making up some of those tet always in the north bay and peninsula. right now we are watching a

significant cell. passing through the east shore getting ready to hit hayward next five to ten minutes. slick conditions through there. you can see the general nature of the showers. er in moving quickly. very spotty. so it is not the greater bay area getting wet right now. mostly your inland cities. keep that in mind. we are going to see nice conditions with inform is next to develop already start to notice that. forcing one hour delays out of sfo. check ahead with your carrier. once high pressure builds in, it will break all those clouds apart and sunshine later today. you will get your vitamin d today. finally after we have been lacking that sun. over the past few days it works out like this. 57 degrees at noon with very light pesky showers inland. you will be at 63 degrees at 4:00 as you make your way home from work. so close to friday eve. 63. comfortable inland today. let's check your drive and aftermath. >> slick roads. good morning. we have the slick roads. be careful. now, they are not saying in the report whether slick roads played a factor. accidents still causing a big issue for 101 northbound top of

your screen and accident there. tully. then just below it, the fire truck blocking your slow lane now that all the cars moved to the shoulder at capital expressway. causing quite a backup. continuing to build. it will be slow just after you come off of that 85 interchange with 101. some folks will be using 85 and getting out monterey highway. others take it to 87. that's where we see the slowing build dramatically heading into downtown from highway 85. slowing further up as well. so we are following the build for the south bay as those accidents continue. try to clear it from the scene. looking at westbound 580 and new accident at greenville and old one at livermore avenue has still causeted more problems. 25-minute drive getting even more congested as you approach. live look outside shows you across bay from the golden gate bridge, volume picking up roadways have the sheen slicker conditions a reminder. back to you. >> thank you very much, mike. still to come on "today in the bay," bay area chihuahuas heading north this morning. find out where they are going

over half an hour we will hear the final arguments in this case. right here behind me at the u.s. supreme court. you can hear the demonstrators are back. most of them getting in. they have already taken folks in. the arguments today involves whether this health care law can stay in if they take out the requirement that everyone, nearly everyone, in this country, get health insurance. the rest of us, more popular provisions, like pre-existing conditions, making sure people can still get insurance can that stand if this law -- part of the law is struck down. also today, later today, they will talk about medicaid. this is a big one for states like california. congress found that after the rollout of the medicaid expansion, california will spend over $19 billion to cover hundreds of thousands more people but that the states here will argue today, laura, the government doesn't have the authority to mandate that big of an expansion of this federal state program. those are the arguments away as you can hear lots of people hear

welcome back on this wednesday. we give you a live look from havana, cuba. that is the popemobile. pope visiting the area down there. the former cuban leader, fidel castro, asking for a modest meeting with the pope today. we will see if that happens. the pope today actually going out and celebrating mass in the

cuban's capital revolution plaza. always a big hit when you see the pope in the popemobile. it has been years since the pope has gone there. let's check the forecast now with meteorologist christina loren. keep the umbrella handy. >> yes, keep it handy for today. by the way, 80s today in cuba for the pope. really comfortable conditions. tropical. we are looking good around here. few light showers moving through. and you can see highways still nice ask slick in san are a fell. 101, yeah, make sure you give yourself extra time as you head throughout the afternoon. we are going to get break from the rain. we still have some significant cells developing along the east shore this morning. hayward, yeah, nice, slick conditions from 880 to . watch out this morning, 580 wet as well. as you can see, though, general nature of the showers are very quick moving and spotty. we don't have widespread shower activity like we did at this time yesterday morning. we continue throughout the day today, we are going to clear out. we are going to get sunshine and temperatures are starting out nice and mild in the 50s. so we will easily touch on the

mid 60s. 54 degrees now in livermore. headed towards 65 degrees today and winds are dropping off in some cities. especially in the north bay as a result of fog developing from the santa rosa to san francisco. flight delays out of sfo. still gusty down here in san jose. east-southeast wind now. 13 miles per hour. because we are so close as to where the system is pulling out. as we head throughout the day today temperatures comfortable and 63 degrees at noon inland. 630 by the bay. pressure continues to move out. and going to take its time, though, dealing with the pesky showers at least for first part of the day. high pressure is going to build in. as it does so, we are talking about the 70s as of tomorrow, even warmer as we kick off the workweek, friday looks good. but also friday, another storm system starts to develop. 6:00 p.m. that's when we start to get first widespread showers along the coast. we will continue to see the showers stream onshore the first part of saturday. then we will get a break, lots of sunshine in the forecast for sunday. monday and tuesday, spring break for many kids across the bay

area. you can get them outdoors comfortably. lot of sunshine monday and 68 inland on tuesday. let's check your drive now with mike. >> we will look to the south bay and most of the routes are okay on a regular schedule. 101 just a problem. we had two, maybe three separate accidents actually in the area. northbound and at capital expressway and at tully road. tully still trying to clear the cars from the roadway. resulted in a big backup. capital expressway, slowing blocked by a fire truck that's on the scene. all the rest of the activity on the shoulder. big backups. 22 registering. shifts southbound slow to 85 which jams up now. some folks likely using -- lot of folks likely using monlt ray highway. and 87 also seeing the big build. ripple effect from 101. that's the shift for the south bay now. and as we look over at livermore and smooth drive, two accidents on the shoulder. big distraction over to 680

commanded, launched from burnett elementary in morgan hill where we are at now. this is being run by the klaas kids foundation with the guidance of the santa clara county sheriff's office. good morning to you. almost 600 people showed up yesterday. you said you weren't even expecting that many. >> absolutely not. i mean, that was just a tremendous you pouring from the community. over 600 people. we were able to accomplish a lot. we quickly expanded past the areas we wanted to have accomplished by, say, wednesday or thursday. we did yesterday. so now we can really start to expand the search that i think will help with the investigation. >> i noticed one of the search points your volunteers tagged red tape on areas of -- might have brought them in for us. what became of those tagged areas. >> each of the areas are rechecked. checked by our staff members or by law enforcement, more high priority areas checked by law enforcement. we had great support from the sheriff's department here. search and rescue team, tremendous and they are going out and following up on areas as

athlete. also, students being asked to wear the color blue. the school color to honor the memory of the student, eighth grade student here at cesar chavez middle school, who fell while playing basketball in pe class yesterday morning. paramedics tried to revive him but they could not. firefighters say the initial call came in as a possible seizure. this is really -- has stunned the entire school. the 14-year-old, again, a student athlete. friends say he was dedicated student. humble. very respectful. with a bright future ahead in football. friends are changing their facebook pages in his honor. the school also posted fwogs the traj do i the website. of course, condolences to his family. reporting live in hayward, christie smith, "today in the bay." it could take several weeks before authorities know the exact cause of death for a 16-year-old boy found dead in his cell at the juvenile justice center. he was line when found early monday.

preliminary autopsy was inconclusive and his name or the reason he was being held there has not been released. we could move a step closer today to learning the contents of an investigative report into the infamous pepper spray incident. video of the incident last november led to threats against the officers involved. and their union is fighting to keep personal information contained in the report all under wraps. alameda county judge ruled two weeks ago some parts of the report could be released but stayed the ruling while step two sides involved worked out an agreement on what parts. today's hearing will focus on whether any of the fighting -- findings rather can be made public. palo alto moving forward with its plan to buy the city as post office. letter has been written to the postal service formally expressing interest in the historic building on hamilton avenue. the building one of hundreds around the country being sold off by them to selmony. city council members will be vote on an official offer next month. leaders say that they do want to

make sure the landmark building built back in 1932 does stay innocent hands of the city. a san francisco church is adding its voice to the debate over the shooting death of a florida teen trayvon martin. the church will hold a special rally tonight in honor of martin. the church leaders are inviting community members to come share their thoughts and solution force breaking what they call the cycles of racism in the u.s. martin was shot and killed in florida last month by a neighborhood watch captain george zimmerman. zimmerman claims that it was self-defense. has not been charged with a crime. now the martin case has a major film studio reacting this morning. marla tellez has the headlines. >> "neighborhood watch." in light of the trayvon martin shooting the studio decided to pull the first trailer and movie posters from florida theaters. studio execs saying the poster will get replaced nationwide with a new one.
