the approach. but issues through oakland, we have debris reported. actually a car tire reported in the lanes. at least reports that hit it, you've been warned there may be a traffic break as they head over there. but a live look at the traffic shows the build is well south of the coliseum up into downtown. we'll watch this, the commute is on. >> thanks, mike. well, new this morning, oakland police at this hour investigating a shooting that has left one man dead. it all happened on 26th avenue near 20th street. details at this point are still coming in as we gather them. but at this point, we do know at least, yes, one man is dead and homicide detectives have been called to the scene. we'll of course keep you updated as more information comes in. 6:02 right now. nearly two weeks after sierra lamar disappeared, we're learning more about the direction the investigation is taking. 6:03 am
search being run out of burnett elementary here in morgan hill, we're getting a better sense of where the santa clara county sheriff's office stands in their investigation. we have spoken with sheriff lori smith. she tells us they're not ready to call this a stranger abduction, they're just not there yet. it's quite possible whoever took sierra lamar 13 days ago knew her or was acquainted with her. investigators do believe that this person is familiar with the area, the sheriff points out that 40% of people who abduct children live within a mile of that child's home. and they're also working with the theory that this was a crime of opportunity. in other words, the person didn't plan this abduction, they saw the 15-year-old and just made a snap decision to take her. >> it's impulsive. the less than 2% of the strangers that abduct children are registered sex offenders, but they do have criminal history. and so we're looking at parolees, probationers, people
6:04 am
who have criminal records. >> reporter: the sheriff's office has already contacted registered sex offenders that live within a couple miles of the home. and they'll soon be moving on to people who have just criminal records. both parents have taken polygraphs, but law enforcement refused to comment on the results. again, if you want to help in the volunteer search, show up between 8:00 and 1:00 today through sunday here at burnett elementary. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." san ramon police hoping someone will recognize a sketch of a man who forced his way into a woman's home and assaulted her. take a close look at this picture. police say this is the man that forced his way into that home on montros way tuesday morning. he apparently sexually assaulted the woman and took off in a small blue or silver suv. the man appears to be in his 40s with a heavy build, straight black hair and brown eyes. it is 6:04 right now.
6:05 am
and this morning navado police are investigating a robbery at the bank of marin. we've got a picture of the suspect taken by surveillance cameras. he allegedly handed a note demanding money then took off on foot. anyone with information about the robbery should call navado police. also new this morning, ten people right now facing charges after taking over an oakland school district building. the group was demanding the school board reverse its decision to close five schools. this disruption forced board members to recess that meeting until today. nine adults and one juvenile were arrested just after midnight for refusing to leave the building. a desperate plea for help from the east bay food bank this morning. "today in the bay" is live in oakland where the alameda county community food bank says they could be out of supplies by tomorrow. how will they operate, christie? >> well, you know, that's the question and where they're making this public appeal. if all were well, what they're
6:06 am
saying is those wooden bins back there would be full of food. right now they're empty. these bins right here, there would be a lot more of them. they would be full of cans and other things, but right now their donations are just down for a lot of people, it was great, they gave over the holidays, they got hundreds of thousands of pounds of food. but this is what's in a lot of these bins this morning. so that tells you the last time a lot of people donated, it was during the holidays. and what's happening now is that the food they got over the holidays is running out and there is a demand right now here with me this morning is michael, good morning, thank you for being up so early. who needs the food right now? >> we're serving 1 in 6 residents of the county. these are working families, children, seniors, making up most of who we serve. it's really everybody's neighbors that need food right now. >> reporter: and you were mentioning this isn't something you think about, but a lot of families have their children home for spring break and have to feed them, as well.
6:07 am
>> right, the biggest uptick in need when children are you have school, spring break, summer break when the children would be otherwise receiving school lunches. when children are out of school, that's the biggest time of need for us. >> if steve can pan down, one thing we notice through these bins you're seeing, is there is food, a lot of it is stuffing and soups and other things but not a lot of canned goods and that's one of the things they're asking for. how can people ask? >> best way to help would be to go to our website, accfb.org. make a donation online and we can quickly turn every dollar we get into $5 worth of food distributed. >> all right. thanks so much, michael. certainly lots of ways to help. that's the latest from here reporting live in oakland, i'm christie smith, "today in the bay." new video could shed new light on exactly what happened the night an unarmed teenager was shot and killed in florida. this is video of george zimmerman. the watch volunteer who shot and
6:08 am
killed trayvon martin. this video was taken just after that shooting in this security video obtained by abc news, you can see zimmerman getting out of the police cruiser and taken into an office. zimmerman telling police he shot martin after the 17-year-old attacked him. his family claims zimmerman's nose was broken and the back of his head had a big gash in it. zimmerman's father defended his son speaking out for the first time to fox 35 in orlando detailing what his son told him leading up to the shooting. >> in doing so, his firearm was shown. trayvon martin said something to the effect of you're going to die now or you're going to die tonight, something to that effect. >> a laura from martin's family says that video released yesterday shows no noticeable injuries on zimmerman. zimmerman, of course, has not been charged in the shooting of martin which has sparked protests nationwide. 6:08 right now. the trayvon martin case has
6:09 am
prompted a number of protests involving hoodies, however. including this one on the house floor. happened yesterday when illinois congressman bobby bush revealed his hoodie while speaking about the teenager's murder. he was removed violating the house dress code. bush and jackie spears say they will organize an even larger hoodie protest in front of the capitol later this week. 6:09. time to check back in with christina loren to find out about a sunny day on tap for today, right? >> yeah, it's going to be nice out there. i don't have kids like you but i'm sure you know the rest of that song. we're going to have to get through the clouds before we see that sunshine. and it's going to take a little while, probably until about noon down here in the south bay, maybe 2:00 in san francisco. meanwhile, you might have to wait until about 3:30 up in the north bay, but your temperatures climbing along the way. because we are going to get breaks of sun. we do have thick fog out there. and ten miles of visibility just
6:10 am
about everywhere, however that fog is developing and our gauges are located in very specific spots across the bay area. it might not be picking up those low visibilities. you might encounter deep pockets out there. indication the fog is out there, the flight delays out of sfo. take it easy across the bay area this morning. we'll be at about 65 degrees in san jose by noon. so comfortable conditions. you're already peeling off a layer in the east bay and the south bay where the sun will shine through earliest. it's going to take its time up in the north bay. that's why your temperatures will still be in the 50s at noon. but take a look where we're headed by about 3:00 or 4:00 today. 70 degrees in san jose, 66 in oakland, and i'm still forecasting 70 degrees in santa rosa with a strong ridge of high pressure. it's going to build in for the next couple of days. as we head through 7:00 p.m. friday, we start to get our showers, steady rain developing, continuing to time out this system for you, get outdoors comfortably this weekend and why you might want to start that spring garden on sunday.
