about's well. i'm kris sanchez along with meteorologist anthony slaughter, who's in for rob mayeda today. it looks peaceful as calm. >> it does. you know, the thing to make note of this morning is the surf. we are under a high surf warning all the way from the south bay to the north bay, and winds will be gusting up to 45 miles an hour, and the gale warning in effect, that means high surf with seas up to about 20 feet. so a very dangerous day to be out on the waters. please use caution if you are going to be taking the risk to get out there. not much happening off the coast of california. we are under the influence of high pressure. temperatures now in the 4s, but we do have a few areas with -- once we get into the afternoon hours this morning, we will see areas of fog again, but it will be breezy from the south bay to the north bay today. numbers not too bad, slightly

warmer than yesterday, we're into the 60s all across the board, and that gale warning in effect at the coast with the waves up to 20 feet, so take it easy out there across the bay today. >> we'll check in in just a bit. 16 days and still no sign of her. this morning the search resumes for morgan hill teenager sierra lamar. once again organizers are expecting a massive turnout. starting at 8:00, organizers say as many as 1,000 volunteers will look for the young girl. rain yesterday did not keep searchers away. among the search us war 49ers quarterback alex smith and his wife. the girl's mother says the support from the community is helping her to stay optimistic. >> it's harder as each day goes by. i don't like to look back and count the day. it's definitely encouraging seeing the effort from the community. >> sierra lamar disappeared on march 16th. while authorities are following

several leads, so far there have been no breaks in the case. once again the search continues at 8:00 this morning. we start with developing news this morning. the u.s. coast guard continues their rescues of several injured sailors off the california coastline whose 70-foot yacht was damaged yesterday. this morning the 13-member crew was participating in a race some 400 miles off the coast, and is now slowly making its way to the san francisco bay. they are expected to arrive sometime this morning. on the phone with us this morning is coast guard petty officer levi read. thank you for joining us, officer. >> thank you for having me. >> what can you tell us about this? it seems like we have some kind of tricky weather conditions, what does that mean?

>> the weather conditions in it is ocean about 300-plus miles off the california coast, it's already thwarted one rescue attempt on saturday evening with the aircraft. and this morning we are continuing rescue efforts with assets -- and -- >> it sounds like your signal is breaking up just a bit. you had to abort one rescues attempt saturday night with one of the largest planes. so now does that change what you're sending out there today? i understand you're sending a helicopter this time? >> yes, that's correct. the, um, first rescue attempt was with a long-range

surveillance aircraft, cargo aircraft, and today it will be done by a helicopter -- the helicopter being ability to get close to the vessel. >> so now 300 miles out at sea, for us land lubbers what does that mean in terms of how far they are and how soon they might be coming back? >> you know, it's 300 miles offshore is a long ways. the ability to get out there with a cutter our helicopter would be different any further than 300 miles. of course, this case started with a -- a -- at least 400 miles off the coast. so our helicopters have only

that range of 300, so that's -- >> okay. so we understand there were 13 people on that yacht participating in that race, but three of them are suffering from serious injuries. what can you tell us about the injuries that they have? >> yes, three of the 13 people on the vessel are injured. how serious the injuries are, we're not exactly sure, but we are -- all we have are reports. we don't have any physical contact, and so we are still -- two people have injuries to their rib cage area, but certainly that's a concern -- >> okay. so petty officer levi read with the coast guard, thank you so much for talking with us on the phone this morning. well apologize for the breaking up, but figure better to have

some information than no information at all. thank you. we'll talk with you later. occupy s.f. event may snarl traffic today. occupy protesters say they will hold the rally and march in union square. the march starts at 4:00. the protesters tell us they will try to take over a vacant building and turn it into a social center, shelter and food bank though not saying which building that is. they also plan to hold street theater and performances in union squares to support people's right to live in public space. that is starting up at 2:00. now to the latest on the trayvon martin case. thousands of protesters marched on the city's police department demanding the arrest of george zimmerman, the man who shot the unarmed teenager dead. nbc's ron allen has more. >> reporter: the nation's civil rights leaders have vowed to make the city of sanford's name as infamous as selma and were in

fans filled oracle arena for the event. authorities say it went well and there were no emergencies. two years ago you might recall two people died at the pop 2012 event at the cow palace. they overdosed on ecstasy. last night there were three ambulances and 40 medical personnel on hand. there was also a new emergency texting service for folks at that rave. fairfield police are hoping someone will come forward with the clue these needed to solve the murder of a young woman. the body was found yesterday morning. the woman's name has not been released, but fairfield police say she was between 18 and 20 years old. investigators are urging anyone to come forward, even if anonymously. they have no suspects at this time. it's a grim anniversary for giants fan brian soho, who is

still recovering from brain injuries a whole year after he was beating in a parking lot. hundreds of people showed up for the annual walk for thought yesterday. they want to raise awareness and money for traumatic brain injury research. >> we had a number of teams that came out in support of our walk this year. at least five of the top fund-raisers throughout the state. out of two of the top money-making teams were made up of friends and family of brian stowe. their goal was to raise $50,000. the walk is over, but the group will continue to collect donations through the end of may. researchers at stanford are calling it a big advancement, what could be a key weapon. a san francisco chronicle report says that immunologists have treated then with a single antibody, one that coaxes the

good morning. looking live at a very pretty picture of the golden gate bridge this morning, where you can expect some breezy conditions there, but at least a bit of sunshine, which is very nice, anthony. i have been moving for the last two weeks and it's been pouring down rain, and i am just done. >> it is terrible, but we're expecting to see some sunshine. in fact, more sun than we saw yesterday. it looks as though we are expecting to dry out today on the other end of this cold front. the cold front is still moving on through. still a strong jet stream in place, but it will replain breezy today.

against, your rainfall amounts across the bay area. really the top areas where the south bay and east bay. that's been different as far as the rainfall amounts have went the past few weekends. in fact, napa got about three quarters of an inch. south sands just shy of three quarters. there are a few sprinkles out there, but we're not expecting a whole lot in terms of rainfall today. if we do see anything, it would be in the south bay, and be this morning as the strong jet stream is going to continue to slide and it will squeeze out what moisture is actually left in the atmosphere. winds are still gusting. not too bad, san jose still seeing those winds at about 14. you'll notice, the temperatures not too bad as well, in the 40s, but take a look at this. you factor in those winds. it actually feels about 5 to 10 degrees cooler than it actually is. santa rosa feels like 38.

feels like 41 in san jose. we are talking about winds. that's going to be the main story all day long, breezy with wind gusts up to 35 miles an hour, a gale warning is in effect today. if you are making plans to do any kind of beaching, definitely want to make sure you take it easy. do not get in the water if you are not a certified lifeguard, and also a high surf warning in effect, so that's a double whammy. winds are expected to subside as we head into the overnight hours. our next system off into the open water still, so high pressure is going to move in for the next couple days. through toempl, and even through the first half of tuesday, we're looking at sunshine. the strong winds in place because of our jet stream will continue to remain at least breezy through the day. less wind for tomorrow, but again that gale warning is in effect especially from the south bay up to the north bay. temperatures not too bad today.

65 in los gatos, 63 in san how so i, milpitas 62, off to the east bay danville right around 60, same for dub ling and blackhawk. san francisco will be right around 60. bodega bay a bit cooler. again the coastal areas are the place toss watch out for today because of the strong winds. otherwise, enjoy the sunshine for the first day of april. quite the contrast from the past couple weekends, but hey, things are starting to look up, it is spring after all, so you know the temperatures will be warming. even by tuesday close to 70. next chance of rain by wednesday. it does look like our pattern is starting to shift a bit. we were thinking more wet pattern a couple weeks ago, now we may be going back to a drier pattern. >> from this point out, i don't really care. i needed a couple weekends that weren't wet. surprising -- a lot of folks trying to get things done, and it was tough. >> it can be tough with a lot of

in another day-long search. volunteers were divided into 60 small groups and fanned out across a 20-mile radius. >> we focused on a new areas today that we haven't done before, neighborhood searching and low-lying areas, but did not include the mountainsides. >> reporter: two days ago volunteers found used condoms and a box labeled handcuffs about a mile from where sierra disappeared. so far, according to investigators, there have been no breaks in the case. sierra's parents are doing their best to stay optimistic. >> it's harder as each day, you know, goes by. i don't like to look back and count the days. it's definitely encouraging, seeing the effort from the community. >> at night, sleeping, you wake up, you know, thinking about things and cry at night still. so it's still tough.

crossen an intersection is suing the city. a wrongful death claim was filed by the parents. it alleges the city knew the intersection was dangerous and did nothing to make it safer. she was stilled while crossing the street with her mother and two little sisters. months earlier a young boy was hit which left him in a body cast. the u.s. coast is helping several injured sailors off the california coastline. the 70-foot yacht was damaged yesterday by a large wave and gusty winds. the yacht is slowly making its way to the san francisco bay area, and now is expected to arrive this morning. three sailors are suffering from serious injuries. a coast guard cutter will drop a diver to the boat when it arrives on scene this morning. the yacht with the 13 crew members on board were taking part in a race some 400 miles off the coast. we did talk with petty officer levi read this morning, who says

an earlier rescue mission was aborted because of the weather and they're hoping today they can get the helicopters out to drop off the diver. a cripple cruise ship is not making its way to port. crews were able to restore power to that liner and is now heading toward malaysia. a fire in the engine compartment sent the ship to during this period of time for 24 hours friday night. at 1,000 passengers and crew are safe, but several did suffer from smoke inhalation. the ship's operator says a refund will be given to the guests. hillary clinton is attending a conversation for the syrian people, being held in turkey. secretary clinton is calling for support of a u.n. sponsored peace plan which would place an immediate cease-fire in place. it would also provide humanitarian aid and begin negotiations between the government and rebel forces. and christians are celebrating palm sunday in

lardy gerston. >> good politicians find a way to build consense when nobody else can. in brown's case he's trying to bring together the left and right to support his temporary tax initiative. recently he accommodated the left by changing the proposal, if you will, to increase income taxes on the wealthy, and decrease the increase, if you can follow that, of sales taxes that many think would be harmful to the poor. so the question is whether he's agitated wealthy and business elements in order to accommodate everybody else. but if brown succeeds, this is going to be a big thing. if he succeeds in building consensus, california will go a long way toward fixing this huge budget deficit. if he doesn't, the state will be in trouble, so much so that few

people will even imagine the kind of mess we'll be in, so it's a big thing to move to the left. >> let's talk about romney. >> same thing, it's not talking, but the nomination. he has a more difficult problem. he's trying to move to the right. if he can't win the republican nomination without getting that conservative vote, if you will. they're really the base, if you will, of other republican party. to do that, romney's had to shift his politics, had to shift is a lot, way to the right. it just hasn't been natural for him to do. so he's had to remake himself. to his credit, romney has won over a lot of cove serve tiffs, including most leslie paul ryan. can romney persuade republicans that he's authentic. if he can't, he's mud. how much are these examples

of good politics, and how much is just saying what they have to say to get what they want. >> like pandering. that's the big question. if we accept the definition of politics, as we had, that's the art of 9 possible. it makes sense to move where you have to in order to win. on the other hand, if we insist on principles over compromise, both brown and romney will fail as leaders. either way they both have big challenges to win battles in the public in the months to come. it's easy to look at these guys to say he's moving this way or that way, but to win you have to find the middle ground, wherever it takes you. otherwise, if it's just on principle, you'll be on the outside looking in. >> you want your politicians to be in the middle, am i wrong?

all right. welcome back here on this sunday. we are looking at skies clearing across the bay area, as we saw some rain yesterday, about a quart to a half inch fell all the way up to the north bay, so now we are done with that system, but we still have a very strong northwesterly flow, the jet stream is right over head, so the clouds will be zipping on through, but we're talking about

sunshine, so enjoy this first day of april. no april fool's joke here in the weather department. winds still gusting up to 14 miles an hour. even up towards novato as well. overall the winds are the main story today. temperatures in the 40s, but we still have some windchills in the 30s from santa rosa over towards fairfield. here's what to expect for today. breezy conditions from the south bay to the north bay. that does mean the coastal areas as well. we have a gale warning in effect and high surf warning in effect, so a double whammy at the coast. high pressure is building, with that very strong jet stream in place, that's why our winds are going to remain very blustery. our next system still out across the open pacific. that's going to move through, as we head towards tuesday night into wednesday. that's when our next change of rain moves back into the area.

again that gale warning in effect at the coast tomorrow, winds will subside just a bit. we're back to 63. today in milpitas, 62, danville around 60, same for alameda, over towards san francisco, san rafael 62. 63 here, across the bay area, sunshine today and tomorrow. the winds will subside a bit for tomorrow, but still bright sunshine, the next chance of rain, that does pull into the region, as we head towards tuesday night into wednesday. not too much rain, so do evan joy the dry, sunny days across the california coast. >> we're getting in all kinds of things. dogs need walking, things need cleaning. >> shed some of that winter weight, get some running done. >> thank very much, anthony. wildlife officials rescued a leopard trapped in steel wires. the leopard was passing through a field when he got stuck in those wires.

officials training we liesed him, they removed it. the big cat was examined by a doctor. fortunately he was not seriously hurt. here's what we are awwing about. a rare pygmy hippo was born in south africa's western cape. look at that adorable face. harry's mother rejected him, so staff at the congo wildlife ranch moved him away so he could have a better chance of surviving. he's receiving around the clock care. they say everything is going well. he's named after britain's prince harry, of course. pygmy hippos are endangered with fewer than 3,000 left -- >> i can't believe the mom rejected it. is anyone else still hung up on that? it's a face only a mother could love -- not even. >> he doesn't want to hug him. thank you so much for making
