good morning to one and all, the time now is just about 4:31, i'm john kelly. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. let's first check that forecast with meteorologist rob mayeda in for christina this morning. >> the weather looking good here as we look at the temperatures, 40s outside, not too chilly, you'll need a jacket, but not too cold. and here's good news, the doppler radar is dry for this morning. nothing weather wise to slow your morning drive. temperatures hour by hour warming up close to 60 today. mid-60s for the bay, upper 60s even close to 70 inland today. tomorrow looks fine, and more showers as we head toward the middle part of the week. mike? >> lovely for the weekend. we're looking over here to the map. the oakland area, no problems past the coliseum, and as typical for a monday, no real construction issues. they typically take sunday into monday off. we don't see any major issues past oakland and the bay bridge, heading into or out of the city.

a span showing light volume, a beautiful view. enjoy it folks. as you know from the commute, this will get crowded later on, guys. back to you. >> thank you very much, mike. the new week begins, the desperate search for sierra lamar turning to the internet. >> a vigil is underway. bob joins us with the latest. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning, laura and john, that volunteer search effort run out of burnett elementary out of morgan hill for the past six days. today it is taking a pause, pausing for the rest of the week at least through friday. this is so the sheriff's office can look at the items found by the hundreds of volunteers who spent the last week searching a 20-mile radius around the home of sierra lamar, the girl who has been missing for 18 days. yesterday's search did yield a bag and pink clothes, but when shown to sierra's parents, nothing looked familiar. they could receive results from

dna and trace testing done on clothes that do belong to sierra. these are ones found right after she disappeared and possibly getting results on the used condoms found late last week about a mile and a half from her home. the family is inviting the public to participate in a 24-hour social media vigil for sierra. and asking them to do this by changing your facebook profile picture to one of the missing 15-year-old girl. and there's going to be another volunteer search, next planned search to possibly be running here at burnett elementary would be next saturday. reporting live in morgan hill, "today in the bay." two injured sailors are expected in the north bay. they were taking part in an around the world yacht race and were headed from china to california when they hit rough seas on saturday. about 400 miles west of san francisco. a 50-year-old woman suffered broken ribs and a 67-year-old

man injured his pelvis. they are now onboard a coast guard cutter which is headed to oakland. >> we're just hoping they're going to be okay. the good thing is, ribs will heal, and, you know, the boat will be put back together and the ride will continue. >> two other sailors are still onboard the yacht which is slowly making its way back to the bay area and expected to arrive in oakland this afternoon. the trial of an alleged gang member accused of killing a father and two sons entering a new phase today. the defense will start presenting its case. edwin ramos accused of opening fire and killing three men as they drove through the neighborhood back in 2008. prosecutors rested their case on tuesday arguing ramos killed them after mistaking them for gang members. the cause of a deadly weekend fire in pacifica still being investigated this morning.

two people died and two were injured when a house went up in flames early on sunday. the victims are identified as a 93-year-old man and a 13-year-old boy. firefighters say there were 13 people living in that house. investigators say it appears the fire was simply an accident. a man who san francisco police was an active gang member posted a prophetic message on facebook just hours before he died. 21-year-old deandre young was found shot dead on friday morning. police say he was a member of the gang in visitation valley, which has been in the gang war that has left ten people dead in three years. alameda police shot and killed a pit bull. near harbor bay parkway. police say an officer was arrested a man suspected of

pulling a knife on his neighbor when the dog charged out of the apartment. police say the officer fired in self-defense. and right now, occupy protesters remain hold up in a vacant san francisco building. following a day of action across 12 cities, aimed at drawing attention to the homeless. right now, they're still inside a building, which is believed to be owned by the city's arch diocese. church officials have not asked police to intervene with no word of any arrests so far. and later on this morning, a ground-breaking ceremony will be held in san francisco for a new, affordable housing project. the 8th story apartment building is one of the first residential projects in the transbay redevelopment agency. they're being developed by the community housing partnership and bridge housing. there will be 120 units, the majority being studio apartments there. all residents must be extremely low income, formally homeless,

and referred for residency by the department of public health. a push to ban food trucks near schools has been abandoned. the state lawmaker said the intention was to make sure students weren't being exposed to unhealthy food. but critics pointed out banning the trucks within 500 feet of campuses would leave a lot of places off limits. he may rework it and reintroduce it. it's 4:37 right now. rob, what's happening outside? >> right now, it's pretty nice. we had the weekend ahead. a big, stormy saturday, cleared out nicely yesterday. and at least for now, the weather's looking good, except on the coast. we have the high surf warning in effect. use caution if you're going to be anywhere near the beaches. 60s later on this afternoon, next chance of showers comes in as we get into tuesday night and wednesday. we're in the 40s outside. you'll need a jacket this

head toward monday. >> finally, a nice weekend, rob. good stuff. and the bridge from rio vista, that's okay, but further north the three-mile bridge, traffic control during the day for this week, the locals will want to know about that. one-way traffic control. highway 4, light volume right now. that will start to build in about half an hour. we're looking at 580 out of the altamont pass and no problems toward the dublin interchange. construction not a factor, as well. typically sunday into monday, we don't see the major crews or roadwork. the south bay showing a nice northbound route. throughout the south bay and jumping up to the golden bay bridge. the giants playing against the a's tonight, at&t park, the park opens at 6:00, expect pregame traffic, 280 as you're approaching at&t, as well at the end of the extension. a few changes are in the works for phone numbers in the south bay. first, anyone dialing 408 will

figured out how much could be rebuilt. students will finish out the school year at a different campus in a neighboring town. a bay area company preparing for major restructuring and that could mean hundreds of job cuts. we get the details from jackie deangelis. good morning, jackie. >> yahoo reportedly set to begin a big round of layoffs today, possibly thousands of workers. reports are saying that the cuts will mostly affect its product and marketing units and won't happen all at once. yahoo will announce a new restructuring plan next week. the stocks futures are lower this morning following several pieces of economic data out of europe and asia this morning. activity is shrinking in the eurozone. wall street is coming off the best first quarter in 14 years. we're going to get information on construction spending later this week, of course, there are reports on auto sales. minutes from last month's fed meeting and all topped off by

friday's jobs report. we saw the dow rise 66 points on friday to 13,212. the nasdaq slipping three points to 3,091, but it soared 18% for the quarter, as well. and finally, burger king is launching ten new menu items today. the biggest change since the chain was founded in 1954. including smoothies and snack wraps. now it's all part of a major overhaul for bk which lost the number two spot to wendy's last year. burger king is remodelling its 7,000 restaurants and will start serving in a cardboard container instead of a wrapper. >> what's old is new. dozens of cities across the country are setting a sizzling record for the warmest march ever. cleveland, ohio, st. louis,

missouri, and washington, d.c. on the list of those cities. more of the cities reaching record status are in the central and southern parts of the u.s. and things are blossoming early. >> here we go. we're in april already. let's see what we're in store for weather wise. >> and hopefully we'll see a bit of warmer weather here. it's been rainy for april around the bay area. but today's going to be nice. close to 70 i think in some of the warmest places out toward the north bay and perhaps around pleasantton later on. we are starting off in the low to mid-40s in the bay area, patchy clouds, partly cloudy skies to start and later on today, not much wind to talk about this morning. what you're going to notice, though, during the day, will be filtered sunshine. well, the rain stays well up to the north. it's a system that has a chance to toss some showers, especially to the north bay. as we go into the future cast, high clouds coming on in. nothing showing up in terms of rain, but it will block the sun

out. so our temperatures around the bay area today. warmer than yesterday. we had highs in the low 60s for most of the bay area yesterday. mid to upper 60s looks good relatively speaking. close to 69 in morgan hill, 70 around santa cruz. partly cloudy start to the day and high clouds streaming in around the tri-valley. and the north bay thanks to a north wind, air warming up and drying out, santa rosa, should see low 70s there. low to mid-60s around san francisco. the next two days, not too bad. more clouds spilling in for tuesday. our best chance for rain this week's going to come for wednesday. mainly for the north bay and lingering showers into thursday and finally, looks like high pressure's going to build into the weekend, which means 60s and 70s for a change, both saturday and sunday. back to you. >> i don't know how you drive, rob, but they say it's time to break a habit behind the wheel. this morning, there's new recommendation on the proper

placement of the hands on the steering wheel. instead of the 10:00 and 2:00, drivers are being encouraged to grip at 9:00 and 3:00. the old-fashioned way could be dangerous. an air bag could send your hands and arms in your face. to prevent injury, driving experts say hold the wheel at 9:00 and 3:00 on the outside of the air bag. >> if you can minimize the, you know, loss of potential fingers, hands, or serious injuries to the face, why not do that? >> another new piece of advice, don't grip the wheel with your palms, instead hold on to it with your fingertips, thumbs pointing up. >> with all the ipads and iphones and all the gadgets out there, i'm sure there'd be people happy to put two hands on the wheel for a change. when good fans go bad. how a march madness celebration became just plain old madness in

welcome back, everyone. taking a live look outside. san rafael this morning. see if traffic's picking up on a monday morning. march madness coming to a close at the ncaa championship game tonight. unfortunately over the weekend, all that madness spilled off the court following kentucky's big win over louisville in the final four. take a look at what happened in lexington. the victory celebrations turning into destruction. thousands of fans just flooding the streets near the university of kentucky campus. you can see setting cars on fire, set a couch on fire out there. more than two dozen arrested and facing criminal charges while some injuries were also reported. now, back to the real madness. the kentucky wildcats set to take on the kansas jayhawks tonight. kentucky and kansas, the two winningest programs in college basketball history, mike's ucla

what's happening on the roads. >> not much, back to you. no, we've got to show folks we're at the limit coming off of the valley y. easing into the workweek across the san mateo bridge, as well. heading to the bay bridge, all avenues look clean and clear here. the east shore freeway down to the toll plaza itself, an 18-minute drive, you're at the limb, and not a problem for the bay area bridges this morning. further north and we have san rafael coming southbound around the curves, very sparsely populated. this will get very crowded about 6:00 when we'll see the slowing at lincoln. but right now, just close to 5:00. not a problem, there's a little glow to the lights but fog is also not an issue. >> thank you very much, mike. >> romans and an eternal roller coaster ride. >> for this couple in japan, they set out to prove it on their wedding day. these love birds took the vows on the world's steepest roller coaster. the theme park employees took
