we're going to see warming today even if the clouds trying to spill in for the afternoon. right now, 40s outside, pretty pleasant. you need a jacket outside. what you're going to see will be high clouds. the sun will be filtered at times. no rain today. on the coast, close to 60 degrees, mid-60s around the bay at 5:00, and upper 60s for the inland valley. nothing weather wise slowing the morning commute. >> and construction wise, very light, easy drive, because road crews don't typically come out sunday night into monday. here's a look at the north bay again. and the smooth drive down past lincoln avenue. easy drive through navado. another look at the east bay this time looking at oakland. here's past the coliseum where no problems heading through downtown. you're at the limit, 15 minutes from 238 to the toll plaza. >> thank you, mike. well, the search for sierra lamar continues and it's moved into the world of social media. the online effort following

another week of scattering fields in and around morgan hill. "today in the bay" is live with the developments. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning, john. the volunteer search effort run out of morgan hill for the past six days is pausing today through friday, the next volunteer search effort isn't going to be until saturday. this is so the sheriff's office can look at all the items that have been found by the hundreds of volunteers who spent much of last week searching a 20-mile radius around the home of sierra lamar. she, of course, the 15-year-old girl missing for 18 days. >> people are flying from out of state just to participate is really encouraging, you know. i know there are more eyes out on sierra. and i know the momentum is going to continue. i really believe that. and i believe with that continuing that we're going to get sierra back. >> yeah, about 700 people

volunteered yesterday alone. that search yesterday did yield a pink bag and clothes. when shown to her parents, nothing looked familiar. that was what investigators initially thought was significant. this week, investigators could receive results from dna and trace testing done on clothes that do belong to sierra. these were ones that were found right after she disappeared. and also results from used condoms used late last week about a mile and a half away from her home. her family is asking you to participate in what is called a 24-hour social media vigil. change your profile picture to one of sierra lamar. reporting live here in morgan hill, "today in the bay." this morning, san jose police investigating an officer-involved shooting. police responding to an alarm at richards bar near east gate avenue. at least one officer did fire a gun, but at this point, there's no indication anybody was hit.

the family of an east palo alto girl killed at an intersection is now suing a city. the wrongful death claim was filed by the parents of this 6-year-old. it alleges the city knew the intersection was dangerous and did nothing to make it safer. she was killed last september while crossing the street with her mother and two sisters. months earlier, a boy was hit in the same spot. two injured sailors were on their way to oakland after a daring rescue at sea. part of an around the world yacht race which hit severe weather over the weekend. live with more on when they're expected to make landfall. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to yo you. it's looking good for the two sailors and their boat, all to be coming back to the east bay.

some time this afternoon, and the first yachts arrived in the race arrived on friday, 1 of 10, we have some youtube video of one of the yachts showing how harsh the conditions were over the weekend when a huge wave hit their 68-foot sailing vessel. they were about 400 miles off the california coast. the coast guard dropped some supplies to the boat, but bad weather prevented crews from boarding it. then a cutter with a helicopter headed out and dispatched a small boat to help. >> looking forward to beds and showers and hopefully cold beers. >> now, two crew members were taken back to the cutter for medical attention. we're told one suffered broken ribs and the other had an injured pelvis. but the cutter, the damaged sailboat, both we're told about 200 miles offshore. now again expected back here in the east bay some time this afternoon.

reporting live, christie smith, "today in the bay." right now, occupy protesters remain hold up in a vacant san francisco building. 12 cities all aimed at drawing attention to the homeless. right now, they're still inside of a building, which is believed to be owned by the city's arch diocese. they say they are providing community services that the government is not providing. >> we plan to have this be a center for the occupy sf community and the rest of the san francisco community. for homeless people, for education, for food, for healing, to basically provide a safe place for people to go to. >> occupy organizers say they have a full schedule set for tomorrow that includes classes on yoga, meditation, french, and

chine chinese. there's no word yet of any arrests so far. concord police have arrested a person suspected of killing a homeless man over the weekend. a body found yesterday at the food mac shopping center on monument boulevard. police found the man dead in a makeshift encampment. the 49-year-old victim is known in the area but he is not yet being identified. the suspect was arrested near that crime scene last night. it is 5:07 right now. san francisco looking just ahead in the federal health care law that struck down by the high court. there are plans to keep key parts of the law intact. guaranteed coverage for children is expected to survive. but coverage for the poor or uninsured could be in jeopardy. the supreme court's ruling could cut off billions of dollars in federal funding for medical and subsidies for families. after being derailed last fall, the state's high-speed rail project could gain new

momentum today. state leaders are expected to release new cost projection in fresno. it ran as high as $98 billion. but now that plan has been revised downward by about $30 billion. the high-speed rail authority wants to speed up the construction schedule. it's 5:08 right now. and with some of the rain behind us, today looks like a nice day dry and up to 70 in some places? >> yeah, i think around santa ro rosa, we could get close to 70 today. no rain in the forecast. we did have a stormy weekend and one of the lingering effects of that. high-surf is extended into about 11:00 this morning. look out for that. but otherwise, pretty nice day. talking 60s for most of the bay area with high clouds coming in. next chance of showers probably by tuesday night and wednesday, especially around the north bay. so 40s outside right now, the radar is dry. had a tough time doing that this

weekend. we did get clearing skies on sunday. notice, partly cloudy now. some rain staying way off to the north today. places like san jose and los gatos, upper 60, close to 70 for santa cruz. mid-60s as you get toward the inner bay around san francisco. and 71 degrees in santa rosa. tomorrow, more clouds, i think, for the north bay, especially wednesday, we'll see a chance of those showers, cooler temperatures midweek, but for a change, looks like things are warming up back toward the 70s. >> a great weekend. we're looking over here, rob, where we do have a warm-up, but this is a fire. we don't like that kind in the morning. barneson avenue near edinburgh. one of the major streets in the area is clear, it's about half mile away from that street. it shouldn't be a problem for the morning commute.

we'll see how it affects folks lives. that's moving smoothly, as well. and 92 in the san mateo hills. looks equally as clear, the westbound taillights commute, looking pretty good as far as the volume goes. we'll see if we have any early slowdowns. nothing brewing over from the east bay. back to you. well, over the years, plains, trains, and automobiles have typically gotten faster, but guess what? surprisingly, that's not the case for muni. san francisco's municipal railway has actually gotten slower since it first started operating back in 1912. in 1920, the streetcar carried passengers from the financial district to the marina in 17 minutes, now it takes about half an hour. a retired service planner told the citizen, back then, streetcars ruled the road. there was no traffic and no traffic lights or stop signs.

this monday morning. that's a live look at the shark tank. it's kind of quiet right there. good weekend for the sharks. beat dallas, 3-0 there. they'll take on the stars again tomorrow looking for more of the good vibrations heading into the playoffs. we should learn today if all of that wet weather will help with water supplies. the latest snow pack survey is taken. state water workers will fan out in the area near echo summit in south lake tahoe. so far, surveys have found the snow pack is only 51% of normal for the day. but one bright spot is the state's good reservoir storage from conservative runoff from last winter's storm. i remember when they first went up there it was dry. >> it was pretty bad. you know, before we got into march. now the totals certainly north of interstate 80 have come back from all the rain and the snow we had through march and we'll show you some of the totals from the automated gauges in the sierra and what you're going to see is a good snow recovery for the northern sierra.

now up to 71%. again, it's the southern sierra, down toward yosemite. this time last year, above 155% of average. so we had a huge snow pack last year. this year, we've seen a recovery. today's survey will target that central sierra. get a really good read on the water content along highway 50. so hopefully if all of this rain and snow we've had to endure over the weekend, we'll see improvement there in the sierra with the official snow pack reading coming on later today. 40s outside right now, no patches of fog, not too windy and no rain. so weather wise, nothing getting in the way of the commute. the radar is quite dry. one thing you'll notice today is high clouds spilling in from the pacific northwest. no rain just yet. but it will start to filter out the sun at times as we go from mostly sunny skies, partly cloudy around lunchtime and very likely mostly cloudy skies. high clouds toward the evening.

game one of three, of course, the giants and a's, at&t park, should see upper 50s for first pitch time around 7:00. a nice sweatshirt should be fine heading out for the game. you'll see 50s to low 60s around the bay area. topping out today, briefly in the 70s around napa and santa rosa. mid-60s elsewhere. and as we take a look at your seven-day forecast, more clouds tomorrow, best chance of showers wednesday, towards the weekend, clearing skies, high pressure could be building back enough to get us back into the 70s as we make our way through an entire weekend on a dry note there, mike. >> thad be great. plus it's the weekend, it's fine. looking over here for today. the game rob talked about. i marked the giants because it's the home of the giants, maybe you're rooting for the a's. it's the bay series. that means the bay bridge and the approach and 280 also going to be relatively crowded towards game time. the parking lot opens at 6:00. the game time, first pitch at 7:30.

it is spring break for many folks throughout the area. a lot of school kids. that'll affect the traffic flow, as well. no major issues for the speeds coming off of any of your feeder freeways. we've got to move out to the east and look at antioch. the 50s and the l street sensor, further north on 160, the three-may bridge that has a one-way traffic control throughout the middle of the day. not a big deal for most of the commute. we're looking at a slower drive, just a dip in speeds out of the altamont pass, still 14 or 15 minutes. 680 moves smoothly. no problems, visibility, or flow with 101 and 280. northbound a nice, easy drive. and a live look to see how things are shaping up. look how sparsely this is populated. 880 coming this way toward the north, no problems for san jose. back to you. it's day one of the

workweek. let's get a check on the markets. for that and more, we know where to turn at the cnbc world headquarters. good morning, jackie. >> hey, good morning, john. well, the futures are lower this morning following several pieces of economic data out of europe and asia. first, we've got chinese manufacturing and the number rose to its highest level in 11 months. that was balanced by activity shrinking in the eurozone. wall street coming off the best first quarter in 14 years. and in the u.s., some data to watch for. manufacturing and construction spending. later this week, of course, there are reports on auto sales, minutes from last month's fed meeting and all topped off by the monthly jobs report on friday. we saw the dow rising 66 points last friday. the dow jumping 8% in the first quarter. the nasdaq slipping three points to 3,091. it has soared 18% for the quarter, as well. meantime, global payments says hackers stole account numbers from up to 1.5 million credit cards. the data breach was reported on

friday. hackers didn't get access to social security numbers, but the data they did steal could be used to make counterfeit cards. visa has removed the company from its list of compliant companies. finally, safety regulators are investigating reports of engine fires on the 2011 chevy cruz and jeep wrangler. in some cases the fires began while the vehicles were on the road. gm and chrysler say they're cooperating with the probe and unaware of any injuries. john, back over to you. >> thank you very much. it is 5:19 right now. if you bought anything this weekend, you may have noticed your bill with a bit higher. sales increases took effect on sunday. the marin county, the fairfax sales tax went up .5% from 8% to 8.5%.

and vallejo sales tax increased a whole percent to 8.37%. chevrolet finds out today if contra costa county will pay back property taxes. they are reconsidering the assessment on the chevron enrichment refinery. the cash-strapped city and county will have to come up with the money if the oil giant wins its appeal. chevron says it overpaid by $73 million and it has received a refund before, almost $18 million back from 2004 to 2006. it is 5:20 right now. coming up, "the today shthe "tos a brand new co-host. find out what political pundit will be sitting at the desk in studio 1a.

welcome back, everybody. we're following breaking news right now. a two-alarm fire reported in san mateo. it looks like it's a house. a residence right there with a lot of smoke billowing out of there. you see firefighters approaching the house, trying to knock this thing down. we've had a report that a total of five people so far have been displaced. we have a crew on the scene, we'll continue to gather information. a two alarm fire on barneson avenue. it is 5:23. the "today" show is bringing sarah palin onboard as a co-host tomorrow morning. nbc says the former alaska governor will reveal a different side than viewers have seen before.

tomorrow's edition will also include a big nbc announcement by ryan seacrest. less than an hour from now, the u.s. census will do something it's never done before. scott mcgrew calls it historic history. >> it's never been done before and is indeed history. the u.s. census will put the 1940s census online for anyone to examine startg 6:00 a.m. our time. now, never before has the u.s. government made this much data available in digital form. now, the website will be 1940census.archives.gov. you'll not be able to search by name. if i were looking for information about my grandfather, roy miller, i would search by his house address. that would give me something the census calls his enumeration district. and look until i find the documents about my grandfather's

"today in the bay" with the latest on a daring rescue effort. good morning. >> good morning to you, laura. i just got off the phone with a spokesperson for this around the world race. she says everything's looking good for these two injured sailors to be back here in the bay area some time this afternoon, she's thinking around 2:00 or 3:00 this afternoon. she says right now the sailboat and coast guard cutter that helped them out are still about 200 miles off the california coast. when they get here, they'll join the rest of the fleet involved in this race here at jacqueline and stay for two weeks. and we have youtube video

onboard that shows how harsh the conditions were this weekend when a massive wave sailed into their sailboat. the coast guard tried to help. they dropped medical supplies, but stormy weather stopped rescuers from boarding that sailboat. then a cutter with a helicopter onboard was able to dispatch a small boat where two of the injured were brought back to the cutter for help. the force of the wave so strong that it broke the steering wheel. >> knew immediately and exactly what to do. they just got the yacht back under control. so although the wheel's gone, the rutter's sill there and the boat we can still steer it. >> reporter: 4 of the 13 crew members were injured, two more seriously, one had broken ribs, the other had an injured pelvis. again, this is an around the world race. they'll be coming to coast guard island in alameda. the sailboat will be repaired

here in oakland. and a spokesperson tells me that they're going to continue on with the race. they'll be here in oakland for two weeks from there it's off to new york. and then back to the uk. reporting live in oakland, christie smith, "today in the bay." today, a new face begins in the trial of an alleged gang member accused of killing a father and his two sons. the defense start presenting its case. edwin ramos accused of killing three men as they drove through the neighborhood back in 2008. prosecutors rested their case on tuesday, arguing ramos killed them after mistaking them for rival gang members. defense attorneys claim ramos was driving that car, but he was not the gunman. 5:33 now, alameda police shot and killed a pit bull they say charged an officer during an arrest. happened thursday night on harvard bay parkway.

police say an officer was arresting a man suspected of pulling a knife on his neighbor when the dog charged out of the apartment. police say the officer fired in self-defense. 18 days after sierra lamar went missing, that search presses on, but today taking on a new direction. this morning, "today in the bay" is there reporting, there's a new push to send the word through social media. >> reporter: you're talking about 24-hour social media vigil on facebook for sierra lamar. we're at burnett elementary where the volunteer search going on for the past six days is taking a pause. the next search is not planned until saturday. now, this is so the sheriff's office can look over all the items that were found by the hundreds of volunteers who spent much of last week searching a 20-mile radius around the home of sierra lamar, the 15-year-old girl who has been missing for 18 days. yesterday's search yielded a pink bag and clothes, but when

shown to sierra's parents, nothing looked familiar to them. this week, investigators could receive the results of dna and trace testing done on clothes that do belong to sierra. these were the items found in her purse just after she disappeared. the investigators also hoping to get results this week on the used condoms that were found late last week about that mile and a half from her home. in the meantime, her family is inviting the public to participate in this 24-hour social media vigil. basically what they like you to do is go on to facebook and change your profile picture to one of the pictures of sierra lamar. reporting live here in morgan hill, bob redell, "today in the bay." the cause of a deadly fire in pacifica over the weekend is still being investigated this morning. two people died and two were injured when the house went up in flames early sunday. the victims are identified as a 93-year-old man and a 13-year-old boy. firefighters say there were 13 people living in that house. investigators say it appears the

fire was simply an accident. a man who san francisco police say was an active gang member posted a prophetic message on facebook hours before he died. 21-year-old deandre young was found shot to death friday morning near main and harrison who reportedly wrote a poem last thursday that ended with, "my time could be next." he was a member of the gang in visitation valley which has been embroiled in a gang war that investigators say has left ten people dead in three years. >> this morning, a ground breaking ceremony being held in san francisco for the new affordable housing project. the eight story apartment building is one of the first residential projects in the transbay redevelopment area. the apartments are being developed by the community housing partnership and bridge housing. there will be 120 units, the majority being studio apartments. all residents must be extremely

low income, formally homeless and referred by the department of public health. well, a push to ban food trucks near schools has been abandoned. the intention was to make sure students weren't being exposed to unhealthy food. but critics point out that banning the trucks within 500 feet of campuses would make large areas of communities just off limits. the bill has been shelved for now, but the sponsor says he may try to rework it and reintroduce it. time now to check in with meteorologist rob mayeda. >> temperature wise not too bad considering we had 50 saturday, low 60s, today we're talking mid to upper 60s for the afternoon. not a bad day with high clouds coming in. but still use caution on the coast. high surf warning in effect through 11:00 this morning. still see some waves that could break as high as 20 feet. we will see more clouds as we go through the week and eventually

a chance, i think of seeing showers come late tomorrow. right now, we're in the low to mid-40s outside. umbrella free forecast today. the radar is dry. pretty active system that will head toward the pacific northwest for today and eventually start to creep down the coast as we go through tomorrow that will bring us that chance, i think, of seeing north bay showers later in the day for tomorrow. today, mid to upper 60s around the south bay, with a bit of a north breeze. santa cruz close to 70 degrees, same around the tri-valley and coast not too bad. 63 degrees around san francisco and 70 or near 70 around santa rosa and you'll see today, high clouds filling in, especially the second half today, it's going to be overcast toward sunset. tuesday night into wednesday, best chance of seeing showers. temperatures will drop down for the middle part of the wk and we clear out for friday and looks like finally, high pressure building in for the weekend.

in a few weeks to review this case. students affected by that deadly tornado in indiana last month returning to school today. the tornado severely damaged the junior and senior high school in henriville. students were out of class for nearly a month while administrators figure out how much of that school could be rebuilt. starting today, students will finish out the school year at a different campus in a neighboring town. a morning news anchor for an nbc affiliate in denver will be back in the studio today. she was bit in the face by a dog on live television. since that accident, she has received hundreds of cards, letters, e-mails, and well wishes. the dog was quarantined for ten days and released to his owner. no charges were filed. she did go through extensive plastic surgery, but great attitude. >> looks like she's doing pretty good for everything considered. nice monday. >> yeah, at least we're not
