the sharks have the day off before tomorrow's game against the dallas stars, the weather and traffic coming up on tuesday, today, april 2nd, "today in the bay." thought you were april fooling me, too. >> yeah, fooling myself. >> good morning, thanks for joining us monday morning, 6:00 right now, i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm john kelly. we check in with rob mayeda to tell us about this monday weather and maybe tuesday weather in this too. >> actually the forecast does look similar. as we get into tuesday too, the temperatures mid to upper 60s. right now, though, you still need a jacket outside. we're at 38 degrees. we've dropped off. 40 in livermore, 40 in san francisco. one thing you'll notice today will be high clouds toward the afternoon. no worries about rain drops today or tomorrow, but by tomorrow night, going to start to see some changes. so today, increasing clouds, 60 near the coast, 64 near the bay,

upper 60s maybe even near 70 for inland valleys tonight. >> well, that looks good. change from the last weekend, i guess. we're looking at the bay bridge. we'll have a little change over the next half hour. but so far, just a few cars deep at the cash lanes and the fasttrack lanes, no problem. and a steady stream of headlights into the city. we'll see a steady stream westbound, that's the reason for the slowing, down below 20 miles per hour. we'll circle that. but bay point and concord looking pretty smooth right now. the volume will creep over the next half hour, guys. >> thank you very much. we'll check back with you. 6:01 right now. two british sailors on their way to oakland two days after monstrous waves left them seriously injured. the pair is part of a crew in an around the world yacht race. but this morning, they're aboard a cutter bound for the bay area. christie smith with an update. christie? >> good morning to you, laura. well, a spokesperson for the

race says it's looking good for the injured sailors, their sailboat and the cutter involved in the rescue to be back here in the bay area some time this afternoon around 2:00 or 3:00. they'll go to coast guard island in alameda. but their sailboat will come here to oakland. and join the others part of this around the world race. we have youtube video this morning onboard one of the yachts that shows how harsh the conditions were out there this weekend when a huge wave hit the 68-foot sailing boat. that wave so strong that it actually broke the steering wheel on the sailboat. one of the sailors suffered fractured ribs and the other a broken pelvis. the coast guard was able to drop medical supplies, but weather prevented them from boarding that boat right away. but certainly the sight was just a relief. >> looking forward to beds and showers and hopefully cold beers.

>> 4 of the 13 crew members were injured. two less seriously, a coast guard cutter with a helicopter headed back out to continue the rescue. and dispatch a small boat to pick up the two more seriously injured crew members. right now i'm told that they're all about 200 miles off the coast of california. they'll come here to jacqueline square for two weeks. that sailboat will be repaired and then the crew will continue on, we're told to new york and then the uk. reporting live in oakland, christie smith, "today in the bay." occupy protesters holding firm at a vacant building in san francisco. that building believed to be owned by the city's catholic arch diocese. so far, officials have not asked police to intervene. the church says it will revisit this issue this morning. protesters marching into the

building and another on the street yesterday after gathering at union square. protesters say they want to turn the spaces into communes for the city's homeless. population so far no word of any arrest or police confrontations. the search for sierra lamar moving now into the social media world. the online effort follows a week of scouring fields looking for the 15-year-old girl. good morning. >> good morning to you, laura, the volunteer effort that was run for the past six days out of burnett elementary here in morgan hill is taking a pause today. they're going to be doing this through friday, not conducting these volunteer searches. the next volunteer search not scheduled till saturday. this is so the investigators can look over the items that were found by the hundreds of volunteers who spent much of last week searching a 20-mile

radius. she's the 15-year-old girl missing for 18 days now. >> knowing that people are flying from out of state just to participate is really encouraging. you know, i know there are more eyes out on sierra and i know the momentum is going to continue. i really believe that. and i believe with that continuing that we're going to get sierra back. >> yesterday's search yielded a pink back and clothes, but when shown to sierra's mom and dad, nothing looked familiar to them. this week, investigators could receive results from dna and trace testing being done on clothes that do belong to sierra. these are ones that were found right after she disappeared. and they're also waiting for results on the used condoms found late last week about a mile and a half away from her home. meantime, her family is inviting the public to participate in a 24-hour social media vigil for sierra by changing her facebook profile to a picture of one of

the missing 15-year-old girl's. "today in the bay." 6:05 right now. new this morning, firefighters mopping up a two-alarm fire. firefighters had the blaze under control now, but five people were displaced by that fire. so far, no word on the cause of the blaze and luckily no reports of injury. and laura, pacifica fire investigators looking for the source of the deadly blaze that happened over the weekend. the call came in of smoke early yesterday. firefighters spent several minutes trying to get everybody out of that structure and put those flames out. 13 people inside the home, most of them, fortunately, got out. but sadly a 93-year-old man and a 13-year-old boy did not make it out. investigators say it appears this fire was an accident. alameda police shot and killed a pit bull they say charged an officer during an

arrest. it happened just before 6:00 yesterday near harbor bay parkway. police say an officer was arresting a man suspected of pulling a knife on his neighbor when the dog charged out of the apartment. police say the officer fired in self-defense. it is 6:07 right now. this morning, a local cyclist on his way back to california after being hit by a car in spain. three time tour of california winner levi was hit and rushed to the hospital, luckily doctors found no broken bones, he just had a concussion and a contusion on his calf muscle. still, he was pretty shaken up tweeting, i was hit by a car directly from behind. i didn't see or hear it coming. one of the scariest experiences of my life. i'm happy to be alive. the santa rosa resident had to drop out of today's race in spain, but he says and vows he will return to training very soon. today the state's high-speed

rail project could get back on track after being derailed last fall. a new cost projection in fresno. the earlier estimate ran as high as $98 million. but now that plan has been revised downward by about $30 billion. the high-speed rail authority also wants to speed up the construction schedule. well, the north bay's alternative the to pg & e looking for new customers. mailing out opt out notices this week to 82,000 residents. have a choice of automatically enrolling with the authority or choosing pg & e. the enrollment deadline is late july. a few changes are in the works for numbers in the south bay. first, anyone dialing from 408 will have to include the area code for every call, even if they're dialing down the street. they're encouraged to use the so-called 10-digit dialing, but it won't be required until october. and then a month later, anyone

in the county who requests new service or adds another line will be assigned a new area code 669. the change is to ensure a steady supply of new telephone numbers to county residents. it is 6:09 right now. behind the scenes on facebook right now, rob mayeda's checking out our weather. >> it's nice to post forecasts. it looks sunny, at least for the morning, and no storms on the map today, that's nice around the bay area. kind of chilly, though. if you're waking up and joining us this morning, it's now down to 38, napa, 47, san francisco. a little breezy at times, around some of our hill tops, at least at sea level, not too bad for most of the bay area right now. the thing to watch for the weather. still that high surf warning or advisory through about 11:00 this morning. again, that's the main effect from the storm we had over this last weekend. and then today, high clouds, temperatures in the 60s. and tomorrow, more clouds, we'll see a chance of showers dropping

in on us as we get to late tomorrow night for the north bay. and our temperatures today, looking pretty nice. close to 70 around santa cruz. out to the tri-valley, we should see numbers in the upper 60s and to the coast, close to 60. near 70 around sonoma today. increases clouds today, chance of showers tuesday night and early wednesday, cooler for the middle part of the week and we'll warm up with 70s coming back this time, perfect timing mid way through the weekend. we'll look over here where we see a little bit of a build overall through the maze focusing in on a new accident. westbound 980 at 27th coming off of 580 and heading toward 880. not a major commute spot and not a major concern, but there is one thing brewing there, the maze itself moves smoothly toward the bay bridge, down the east shore freeway, still about a 19-minute drive for westbound 80. we'll focus here toward westbound 580. that's where you see the majority of the slowing for the bay area because this is a big

welcome back on this monday morning. you can see the sparkling lights out in the distance. that is a wide shot of san francisco. you can see over there, the sun's starting to peek up on the horizon. rob's along to tell you about the weather. it is 6:14. this morning, car fires are sparking a federal investigation into two car models. safety regulators say they've gotten eight reports of fires in 2010 model jeep wranglers. most began when cars were moving, and four owners reported their cars were are destroyed. chrysler knows no accidents or injuries related to the issue. under investigation, the 2011 model year chevy cruze. the cars were also in motion. okay. believe it or not, we're not kidding here. airline performance has actually improved over the past year.

data submitted to the department of transportation by the nation's 15 largest airlines. and when it comes to on-time performance the industry average is 80% on time. that's a shocker. hawaiian airlines ranking first on time. it's also good getting into the islands there. jet blue ranking last almost 73% of the time. when it comes to lost bags, the industry averages more than 3% per 1,000 passengers. american eagle has the most with more than 7%. now, as far as consumer complaints submitted to the department of transportation, the industry average is about one complaint per 100,000 passengers. southwest had the least with .32. united that the most with 2.21. you got all that? >> the numbers i want to know about because i'm not going anywhere. the forecast. >> we've got to work on this

where we've got the nicer weather for the workweek and the weekend was not so good. saturday a lot of wind and rain, but today if you're going to be driving around not too bad. you want the coat. for the north bay, we're down to 38 degrees in napa. 41 in fairfield. livermore, pretty chilly, as well. and san jose about 46 degrees. so cool start to the morning at least not too windy except some of our hill tops. we're seeing a gust of wind picking up in the east bay hills and around the peninsula. san bruno mountain a little gusty. it's quite dry right now. clouds spilling in for the afternoon as a system for the bay. eventually this weaker version of this system's going to slide down the coast and bring us a chance of some showers probably by late tomorrow for the north bay. today, partly cloudy skies to start. what you're going to see is that filtered sunshine look. so no rain today, underneath those high clouds, we'll warm up a little bit.

we'll see those numbers mostly in the 60s. the first pitch for the giants. a's, the bay series underway today. 58 degrees first pitch, 7:30 tonight, back over to oakland tomorrow, looks like that will be dry too. and as we head toward wednesday, looks like another day probably seeing 60s around san francisco. today, mid to upper 60s around the south bay. close to 70 around santa cruz and pleasanton. otherwise mid-60s toward concord and over around places like oakland. 68 degrees, bit cooler, san francisco, 63 degrees, close to 70 around santa rosa and sonoma for today. the warmest days to start the workweek, today and tomorrow, the chance of showers actually rolling in on wednesday. cooler, as well. midweek, we'll seal the showers there as we change the timing now, hopefully for the liking of the bay area as we start to warm up for a change and clear out for the weekend. 70s coming back come sunday. mike? >> we'll look out to the roadways now for traditional

time right here. this has not changed. highway 4 westbound that 13 miles per hour registering the speeds past l street and clearing up and still 60 for bay point. the volume's starting to shift over here. further north, you have a 3-mile bridge also with construction that's up through rio vista. a little bit of slowing, the volume for the two westbound. no major issues toward the toll plaza, but the metering lights should be turned on right now at the toll plaza itself. that'll cue more backup there. westbound 980 toward 880. an accident clearing at 27th. wanted to point that out anyway. a smooth drive, but you'll see the metering lights any minute now. and getting into the city, a smooth flow here, as well. right at 6:00. that's when the parking lots open around at&t park. battle for the bay tonight and san francisco and tomorrow and oakland. and back here on wednesday. keep that in mind. and if you have spring break

plans in the area. great way to get there. no delays reported for our system. that takes you up into the city without any issues. and the south bay itself, route's looking really good for 101 and 85. just showing a few blips there. we'll send it back to you. >> thank you very much, mike. 6:19 right now. this morning, ana nicole smith's long-time companion will be back in court. they're appealing a decision to throw out nearly all charges against howard k. stern. a judge ruled stern never had the intent to commit fraud. instead, the judge said stern was simply trying to protect her privacy. smith died in 2007 of an accidental overdose of a powerful sedative mixed with nine other prescription drugs. also today, criminal charges could be on the way for pro football players connected to that pay for pain program. the nfl says it's weighing

exactly how to punish two dozen or so saints players allegedly connected to that bounty program. telling players it has hired attorneys to represent them if needed. the nfl says at least 22 players were part of that bounty pool which awarded thousands of dollars in cash in bonuses for hits that would knock out targeted opponents during a ball game. the nfl has suspended the head coach for the entire season next year, that is without pay. the appeal process is set to begin this week. 6:20 right now. it's the day basketball fans have been waiting for the whole month. tonight, kentucky and kansas will square off in the ncaa championship game. teams of the winningest programs in college basketball history. and the coaches -- most of the brackets that haven't been shredded have kentucky the overall number one seed winning it all. really anything can happen. tonight's game is at 6:00 our time. >> ncaa tournament a great

a push to ban food trucks near schools has been abandoned. the initial intention was to make sure students weren't being exposed to too much unhealthy food. but critics pointed out banning the trucks within 500 feet of campuses would make large areas of communities off limits. the bill has been shelved for now, but the sponsor says he may try and rework this and reintroduce it at a later date. you might have a new throne to sit on the next time you're at burger king. the fast food chain is revamping the 7,200 chains. the web advertising most of them including smoothies, specialty coffees, chicken strips, and snack wraps. the move is coming as burger king tries to reclaim its spot

as the country's number two fast food restaurant. wendy's took that title last year. >> that's a fierce battle. a few minutes ago, the u.s. census put the results of a census online. that's the first time ever and as scott mcgrew calls it historic history. >> it's not redundant, it's historic, it's never been done before. the u.s. census put that 1940 census online for anyone to examine this morning. never before has the u.s. government made this much data available in digital form. you see this preparing image? this website is slow this morning. it's 1940 census.archives.gov. if you go, you are probably going to see this, wait, wait, wait loading thing this morning. you will not be able to search by name, which may surprise you. if i were looking for information about this man, he's my grandfather, roy miller, i would search by his address, that would give me something the census calls his enumeration

new phase today. the defense will start presenting its case in the murder trial of edwin ramos, the 25-year-old gang member is accused of opening fire killing anthony and two of his sons as they drove through san francisco's neighborhood back in 2008. prosecutors rested their case tuesday arguing ramos killed them after mistaking them for rival gang members. defense attorneys claim ramos was driving the car but was not the gunman. oakland hills residents attended a recent town hall meeting where many complained fewer patrols are making burglars more brazen. there's been an increase in daytime robberies with thieves breaking and entering rather than sneaking through unlocked doors or windows. the family of an east palo alto schoolgirl killed in a crosswalk is now suing the city.

it alleges the city knew the intersection at gloria way and bay road was dangerous and did nothing to improve safety. she was killed last september when crossing the street with her mother and two sisters. months earlier a young boy was hit at the same place. a desperate search for 15-year-old sierra lamar now taking a new direction. welcome back, everyone. 6:45 right now. we should learn today if our wet march would help with water supplies as the latest survey is taken. state water workers check spots near south lake tahoe. and so far, surveys have found the snow pack only about 51% of normal for the season. one bright spot this year is the state's ample reservoir levels. 6:45 right now. and on that subject, we got water to help out to avoid that dastardly "d" word.

>> the automated gauges showing a little bit of improvement. as we take a look at the numbers from our snow pack average to date. what you're going to see thanks to march, the numbers have come up pretty good for many spots. we did see up toward the northern sierra, 21% of average. it's the southern sierra lagging behind from highway 50 south down to yosemite, those numbers, 39%, close to a 30-year low for the southern sierra after last year when the entire state was 160% of average. but, again, the survey today happening in the central sierra between interstate 80 and highway 50. so hopefully, again, the weekend storm helped these numbers out a little bit and it looks like we could tack on a little bit more toward the middle part of the week. outside right now, feels a bit like winter outside around the north bay. 38 degrees in napa, not too breezy and not rainy just yet. as we go through the day today, what you're going to see are increasing clouds, not really the rain producing variety

"today in the bay" is live with the latest on this daring rescue effort. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, john. i spoke with a spokesperson for the race who tells me right now they're about 200 miles offshore, maybe a little bit less by now. she's expecting them around 2:00 this afternoon. and the boat will come here and join others, nine others that are part of the clipper around the world yacht race. and we have dramatic youtube video that shows how harsh the conditions were this weekend when a huge wave slammed into the sailing boat. 4 of the 13 crew members were

injured and that wave was so strong it broke the boat's steering wheel. the coast guard wanted to airlift the injured sailors, but the conditions were too hazardous. the helicopter was able to d dispatch a small boat. and two of the more seriously injured were brought aboard and they'll get care here in the bay area when they arrive. and the boat will be repaired and the crew members will continue on to new york and the uk before the race finishes in july. reporting live in oakland, christie smith, "today in the bay." 6:50 right now. new this morning, firefighters mopping up a two-alarm fire in its peninsula neighborhood. broke out on barneson avenue. in san mateo just after 4:00 this morning. took firefighters about half an hour just to contain that fire. the family of five was displaced. but officials don't know the cause of the fire yet.

but they think they know where it started. >> the fire looks like it started on the outside in one of the garages, spread to another garage and into the attic of one of the homes. there were a number of lean to structures. we struck a second alarm, so crews are on scene making sure there's extinguishment, assisting the family displaced from the home. >> this is video taken from the chopper, numerous fire trucks on the scene. so far, no reports of any injuries and investigators say damages will reach hundreds of thousands of dollars. this morning, it's an occupy takeover in san francisco as protesters continue to camp out inside a vacant building. there's a massive sign right now at 888 turk street in san francisco. the building is believed to be owned by the city's catholic archdiocese. so far, officials have not asked police to intervene, but they will revisit the issue this morning. in the meantime, oakland police are searching for vandals responsible for vandalism during an occupy march on saturday

night. officers say windows were broken and paint was sprayed at five businesses near the oakland city center. officers are reviewing surveillance tape to find the culprits. and in alameda county, prosecutors are under pressure to dismiss charges against 137 students and faculty arrested during an occupy protest at the cal campus back in november. the cal chancellor has sent a petition with more than 300 signatures demanding the cases be dropped. this morning, new questions about potential evidence in the shooting death of a florida teenager by a neighborhood watch volunteer. >> so you think he's yelling help? >> yes. >> 28-year-old george zimmerman says he shot and killed trayvon martin to save his own life during a violent struggle. screams were hurried in the background of the 911 call made by a neighbor. his family and attorney have said it's zimmerman calling out. but testing by two forensic audio experts concluded it is not zimmerman, but a much

younger voice. zimmerman's lawyer has refused to discuss those results. dozens of survivors fighting for their lives right now after an early morning plane crash. the twin engine turbo prop went down about 1,000 miles east of moscow. a total of 31 people have died so far, but the 12 who survived are listed in serious condition. investigators say it appears technical failure is to blame for this tragedy. russia has seen a string of plane crashes over the past few years. many blame poor maintenance and poor crew training. the captain of a stranded cruiseship is being praised for bringing everyone safely ashore in malaysia. the captain can be heard ordering passengers to report to their stations also showing them wearing life jackets. the ship was stranded for 24 hours off the coast of the philippines with 1,000 people onboard after an engine room fire.
