kelly. >> lots to get to this morning. let's first check that forecast with rob mayeda in for christina. good morning. >> nice start right now, a dry start to the forecast this morning, but by the afternoon, we will see a chance of some showers along with breezy conditions picking up later on. right now, temperatures this morning we're in the 40s to near 50 in san jose. chilly outside, but not all that windy, but we do have a sea breeze to help keep the temperatures down as we go through the day. you can see on the radar view, rain up there on the north coast, that's going to be sliding further south later on this afternoon. so hour-by-hour in the locations by 5:00 this evening, may start to see a few showers out there. and this will be the wettest part of the seven-day forecast. for tonight into tomorrow. and as we head into the weekend, temperatures warm up, 60s and 70s coming back by sunday. back to you. >> thank you, rob. we have new details in the developing news about that deadly mass shooting. >> oakland police have a suspect in custody and a murderous

rampage at a private university. the question many is asking is why. we have team coverage, we start with bob redell who has a look at the suspect's history. good morning, bob. >> yeah, good morning, laura. you know, oakland police have been interviewing, interrogating, actually, they expect to file charges against this 42-year-old suspect some time tomorrow. police arrested him a few miles away at a safeway shopping center early afternoon. this was a short time after he allegedly went in and shot a fellow former student and other people inside the university. not too far away. as for possible motive, fellow students tell us that the former nursing student who is a south korea national didn't fit in at the college because of a language barrier and we have learned he was apparently upset at the school for having dismissed him. oakland's police chief says he walked in around 10:30 yesterday morning, took a receptionist

hostage and demanded to see a female administrator who he was unhappy with. he allegedly lined up his victims up against the wall and shot them execution style. seven people were killed, it's not clear whether that receptionist or administrator were among those shot. we found he was struggling with significant debt and had been dealing with the loss of his mother and brother, both of whom died within the past year. the investigative unit has confirmed that law enforcement is looking into whether the 45 caliber semiautomatic gun used yesterday, whether it's the same one he purchased legally last week at a gun shop in castro valley. the irs as far as the debt is concerned has two leads against goh, placed against him in recent years totaling more than $23,000. there are also two judgments against him totaling more than $10,000. reporting live outside opd,

"today in the bay." 4:33 right now. one of the survivors is home with her family. but we spoke to the nursing student and soldier who was wounded while helping her classmate. you can see her on the phone saying she was shot. she was in the back of a classroom when bullets started flying. her brother paul told us the scene was a chaotic scene. the gunman ordered students to line up against a wall and started shooting. she says she would've escaped injury, but she went back inside the classroom to help a friend escape. >> i went to help a fellow student, and i got shot in the arm. it's okay. >> she was released from the hospital last night with her arm wrapped in bandages. and we have more details of the christian college. they offer a wide range of programs including nursing and theology to korean students. it's licensed and accredited with the state, more than a

doz dozen workers -- took in nearly $1 million in tuition. simply devastating, that's how larry reid is describing the massacre that unfolded right in his district. also expressing sorrow. yesterday's killings add to an alarming homicide rate just a few months into the new year. >> there are too many guns in the hands of individuals who aren't afraid to use them. and certainly this individual who took the life of six people and wounded three others is no different when one individual loses their life. it's just really sad. >> he point in times out more than 27 people have been killed in his district just this year before monday's mass shooting. well, a memorial for the victims are planned this evening at allen temple baptist church on international boulevard. that is in oakland. make sure to stay with nbc bay area news for continuing coverage of the school shooting

rampage. we'll update you throughout the morning and all day long at nbcbayarea.com. and in other news, city leaders in san francisco delivering a strong message to the federal government. leave our pot clubs in peace. city supervisors, a city attorney, and state officials will hold a press conference at city hall this morning. they want california's u.s. attorneys to stop the federal crackdown that has already forced the closure of five city clubs. the press conference begins at 11:30. it will be followed by a rally and march to the federal building. today's rally follows the federal raid at the university regarded as the princeton of pot. the first medical marijuana school says yesterday's raids targeted the school's founder, richard lee. last month, oakland moved ahead. holding on to hope, investigators are expanding the search for morgan hill teenager sierra lamar. canvassing areas in morgan hill,

san martine and gilroy this week. investigators are stepping up the efforts. those daily searches with hundreds of volunteers are now starting to just wind down. the next community search is set for saturday. it is 4:37 right now. i want to get a look at the forecast for the tuesday morning. here's rob. >> yeah, the forecast not too bad to start the morning. we're not going to need an umbrella for the morning, but the afternoon and evening, that's a different story. the breeze is picking up during the day and we're going to wrap up the day before sun down with a few showers out around the north bay and some of that may linger into this time tomorrow morning. temperatures not too chilly, we're in the 40s to near 50 outside. the wind will be something we'll be watching, though, as we get through the afternoon, 15 to 30-mile-per-hour winds as we approach the evening. right now, the radar dry at least locally, but as we get up to the coast, you can see some of that rain. this is the system that's going to drop to the south during the

day today, increasing our clouds, picking up the breezes and eventually we'll see the showers dropping through the north bay and watch what happens here toward the end of the evening commute, you're going to see some of these areas of showers cross through the bay area around 10:00, even around the south bay, not a lot of rain. rain totals just enough to wet the ground in the next 24 hours. and you can see the rain totals looking at less than .1 inch of rain. coming into very early tomorrow morning. so our temperatures around the bay area today will be still pretty mild, at least south of san jose, but we're going to see cooling today out towards the delta and the north bay and we'll see that light rain falling by mid afternoon. 59 degrees around san francisco. so tonight and into tomorrow, notice the temperatures dropping down, midweek, we're going to see the cool down that will take us through friday, but the weekend is still looking pretty good. we'll see 60s and maybe some low to mid-70s by sunday and monday of next week. >> thank you very much. well, this has been a long

looks like it might be a little bit wet out there, but looks like a dry day for the most part. as you head outside, you may notice a little bit warmer today than it was yesterday. kind of chilly as you started off to work. but today, kind of nice. be ready for a good one. the time now 4:43. mitt romney inching closer to the republican presidential nomination, but his rivals are not yet ready to give up. tracie potts in washington with the latest on today's primary. >> there we go. >> with a massive lead in maryland and no strong competition in d.c., today mitt romney's focused on wisconsin where public employee unions have been a big issue. >> they shouldn't get paid substantially more in pay and benefits than the taxpayers are paying for them. >> reporter: romney's inching up seven points, taking a big hit among women compared to president obama, but conservatives seem to be coming around. >> they know mr. right is not coming along, so they're accepting mr. right now.

pointing to a lower open at this point. after the market got the second quarter off to a positive start. investors responded very well to better than expected reports on u.s. manufacturing, but easing concerns about a slowdown in activity in europe. we saw the asian and european markets in the red today. and in the u.s., we're going to get data on factory orders and the minutes from last month's fed meeting later this afternoon. we saw the dow rise 52 points on monday to close at 13,264. the nasdaq adding 28 points to 3,119. an auto maker is reporting march sales today is expected to be another strong month for the industry capping off a sizzling first quarter thanks to the improving economy and easier access to finances. people are buying fuel-efficient vehicles. gm saying, in fact, sales of those cars topped 100,000 last month. get ready to fork over extra cash the next time you fly.

low-cost carrier aleejt air is charging passengers to store in the overhead bin. they mostly fly people from smaller cities to vacation spots like orlando and las vegas. back over to you. >> thank you very much. charging for carry-ones. what has this world come to? how do you police putting it above, below. let's see what's in store for our forecast today. maybe you want to stay right here in town. >> you know, the weather, at least temperature wise, not too bad. a chance of showers coming in during the day today. the timing's not that bad. once you see the seven-day forecast, looks like the best weather is saved for the weekend. outside right now with more clouds coming in, not quite as chilly as 24 hours ago. we've got upper 40s and low 50s outside. so i think light jacket weather's going to be fine for you this morning. wind's not a factor right now, but later today, the gusts picking up about 15 to 30 miles

per hour. radar locally is dry, but the north coast, we're seeing rain here on the north coast, that's going to slide to the south during the day today. powerful system which has been slamming the pacific northwest is going to weaken through the bay area, but as the front moves in with the moisture in place, that's going to add the lift during the afternoon. you'll see a few sprinkles out there, possibly by lunchtime in the north bay and early afternoon and the evening commute, we'll start to see showers around the bay area. but look how quickly this thing gets out of here by tomorrow morning. may be a lingering shower around the hills, but things will be clearing out toward your wednesday. rain totals the next 24 hours, not an impressive system at all, just enough to wet the ground at times, maybe for the evening commute and overnight. in the sierra, though, probably see another 6 to 8 inches of snow along interstate 80 into tonight and tomorrow morning. temperatures around the bay area south bay pretty mild today, close to 70 in gilroy. the areas north of interstate 80

as we get out of the delta heading into the north bay. upper 50s to low 60s today with a chance of those light rain showers moving through as we go through the afternoon. in the meantime, we're going to see the showers, cooldown, highs dropping in the 50s to low 60s next couple of days. as we get into the weekend, that's pretty nice timing for a change. we're going to see 70s coming back. and not only a dry weekend as we go through this weekend for your outdoor plans, but low to mid-70s possible all the way into monday and tuesday of next week. little shower activity out there. breezy, but the weekend's looking pretty good. >> thank you very much. well, apple is listening and hearing loud and clear from disgruntled iphone owners. $15 will be issued to them as part of a class action lawsuit. they've had reception issues with the antenna. they gave away free bumper cases last july for that problem. you have to fill out a claim with apple by august to be part of this settlement.

supervisors will hear an appeal to the environmental impact report on george lucas' plans for grady ranch in san rafael. the film maker wants to revamp the land with a production studio, a store, and tasting room and parking for at least 200 cars. neighbors say they're concerned about traffic, noise, and late-night movie shoots. the san rafael chamber of commerce says the development will create 250 new jobs. >> looks like a nice joint there. first lady michelle obama will guest star on a two-part episode of "the biggest loser." tonight's episode featuring reunions at the white house and the show's first ever white house workout. the first lady reportedly will talk to contestants about their behavior and how it can impact their kids' behavior and also will congratulate them as examples of striving for health and fitness. and speaking of health and fitness, guess what? we have a little scoop here on scoop of ice cream. >> yeah, no kidding.
