shooting. christie, good morning. >> good morning to you, john. oakland's police chief howard jordan just wrapped up a press conference revealing a little bit more information about the suspect one al goh saying in his opinion they've questioned him and he's not particularly remorseful about what happened here yesterday. they're saying he was indicating he was upset with how he was treated here by fellow students and administrators at oikos university that he'd been expelled. they didn't have details on why. that he walked in before 10:30 and looked for a particular female administrator. he ended up taking a receptionist hostage, went to classrooms and started shooting. he apparently told some students to line up. oakland fi hep only stopped shooting when he realized people were calling 911. >> we doe know he was upset at

administrators at the school. we do know he was upset with students with the way he was treated when he was enrolled here two months ago. >> now, he also indicated that of the deceased, seven dead, three injured, of the deceased six of them are women, one man. there were also reports yesterday that a gun, a 45 caliber weapon was recovered, but police saying that's not true. and in fact, they are going to be looking for that weapon in the area today and charges in this case are forthcoming. reporting live in oakland, christie smith, "today in the bay." and an in-depth look into what the suspect was doing in the days and weeks before the shooting. bob redell live at oakland police headquarters this morning where investigators are trying to figure out what may have led the suspect to just snap. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning, laura. right now goh is at the jail where he's been interrogated.

he was expelled the police chief telling us this morning because of behavioral problems and anger management issues expelled from the college. we have spoken with fellow students who said he didn't quite fit in in the college. he's a south korean national and apparently had a problem with the language barrier. the nbc bay area investigative unit has dug into goh's background and found that goh was struggling with significant debt and was also dealing with the loss of his mother and brother, both of whom died within the past year. now, the investigative unit also confirmed that law enforcement is looking into whether that 45 caliber semiautomatic handgun used yesterday is the same one that goh purchased legally last week at a gun shop in castro valley. as for the debt, the irs had issued two liens against goh in recent years totaling more than $23,000. there are also two judgments outstanding against him totaling more than $10,000.

goh is from oakland currently and also lived in castro valley and within the past ten years on and off in virginia. no criminal records there, just a couple of minor traffic offenses. he also bought fishing and hunting licenses in that state, as well. reporting live here outside opd, bob redell, "today in the bay." and two people recovering from gun shot wounds in oakland. we are being told both are in stable condition. you can see the third victim right here on cell phone video taken at the scene by a witness. the soldier and nursing student kalr was in the back of the classroom when bullets started flying, she went back into the classroom trying to save a classmate. she was shot in the arm, but she was treated and released from the hospital yesterday. >> i went to help a fellow student and i got shot in the arm. but it's okay. >> her brother tells us his sister is now resting comfortably at home.

he says physically she seems okay, but emotionally, she is depressed after what she went through and understandably so. >> very much so. before the mass shootings, few people knew about oikos university, a small religious school west of interstate 880. it's a non-profit christian school that primarily serves korean students from the east bay. it is not federally accredited. but the state has authorized seven degree granting programs, including bachelor degrees in biblical studies and music. masters in asian medicine as well as doctorate in ministry. a memorial for the victims is planned for tonight at allen temple baptist church on international boulevard in oakland. stay with nbc bay area news for continuing coverage of the school shooting rampage. we will update you throughout the morning and all day at nbc bay area.com. it is 6:04 right now. and in other news this morning,

occupy protesters arrested in san francisco after setting up camp inside a vacant building. the city's archdiocese authorized police to get inside that building to get occupiers out. the occupiers took over that building sunday using it as a homeless shelter and to hold classes on cooking and medicine. police estimate the total number of arrests to be between 70 and 80 people. 6:05 right now. bay area's so-called princeton of pot is closed up tight this morning. federal authorities swooped in yesterday and raided oakland's oaksterdam university. federal agents took fire boxes, a safe, and trash bags filled with pot. authorities refused to reveal why the place was being raided only that it is part of an ongoing investigation. across the bay, san francisco leaders speaking out against the growing federal

crackdown on california's medical cannabis industry. medical marijuana supporters will rally outside of city hall. that rally will be followed by a press conference held by city supervisors and several state legislators. a noon march is then planned to the federal building to protest the government's attacks on safe access. all right. want to take a little break from the day's news and the forecast. a little warmer heading out the door, but keep the umbrella handy. >> especially for what's coming up later on this afternoon. we've got clouds outside this morning. you're going to notice here that we're going to see showers starting off in the north bay and then i think by the evening, those will be sweeping into parts of the central bay and eventually the south bay as we get into tomorrow morning. our temperatures this morning thanks to the mainly cloudy skies, not too bad. 40s and low 50s outside. the other item to watch will be the winds picking up later this afternoon from 15 to 30 miles per hour. right now, most of the action in terms of the rain on the north coast, but steadily and surely it'll drop to the south. this front by the time it

arrives in the bay area is going to weaken. the types of rain totals is generally less than 1/10 inch. showers here mainly to the north of the golden gate and into the afternoon and evening, and now the rain that goes through the south bay pretty quickly. and by this time tomorrow morning, looks like some north bay showers, but generally clearing out and cooling down for the middle part of the week. hour by hour for your temperatures, lunchtime as you notice, towards san jose, a mild day for the santa clara valley, north bay running cooler because the as the rain starts to fly, the cooling effect will start to drop the temperatures down here north of the golden gate. but mild finish to the day around san jose. we have some showers due in later and a cooler midweek, but the weekend still looking pretty good. 60s and 70s as we approach easter sunday. . well, still focused on the san mateo bridge because of the all the activity. let's get a live look with the chopper. they're on the foster city side. and there's a tow truck and a

big rig on the side of the road. traffic flows nicely past it. steady flow, let's get a look at the video from a few minutes ago. the tow truck arrives. that rig is the one we reported stalled. very slow-moving rig. look at this just like a tug boat. that tow truck gets behind it and starts pushing. up that high-rise, up to the top once they hit the high-rise. and so they coasted down to the bottom of the hill. that's where they rest with no major disturbance. good stuff. back to the maps and show you now we have 580 westbound, the momentum of the commute continues to build. more slowing through livermore into pleasanton for an 18-minute drive there. we have a smooth drive for all the feeder routes once you get closer to the bay bridge. no metering lights. it's traffic tuesday. so we'll see a good gathering even though many schools have spring break. that's why a lot of folks are seeing a lighter flow. back to you. >> thank you very much, mike.

there. it is lighter, mike says across the bay area. a lot of people out for spring break. 6:11 right now. and speaking of traffic, here's a creative way to help unclog the roads on the peninsula. stanford university engineers nudging workers to commute during off-peak hours using gains and cash incentives. cash always speaks louds. radio frequency i.d. tags on the inside of windshields track the time they enter and leave the campus and if they avoid that 8:00 to 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. rush hours, they're rewarded with random cash prizes from $2 to $50. >> we do that. well, a train car with its new easier to clean seats this morning. part of the agency's project to create the next generation of trains. the fabric covered seats will be covered with a wipable material, but the cushions will remain.

we can tell you plans to build a $433 million casino in the north bay, hitting that fast track, where it could start this summer on the project on wilfred avenue. it'll feature a hotel and casino with up to 3,000 slot machines. casino opponents say they're planning legal action to try and stop this project. and the south bay's newest casino will have to wait to open its doors. owners of the casino matrix wanted to open for opening day. more than 700 employees are now out of work. last week, the casino sued san jose to operate. but the judge denied their request for an expedited hearing. >> it may not be the force, but trying to force marin county to stop a new development.

on george lucas' plans for grady ranch in san rafael. the film maker wants to revamp that land with a production studio, a restaurant, a general store, a tasting room, always got to have one of those, and parking for at least 200 cars. neighbors say, well, they're concerned about all the traffic that would cause, all the noise that would come and the late-night movie shoots. the san rafael chamber of commerce says the development, the good news is, will create 250 new jobs. >> all right. taking a look at the skies this morning, is rob mayeda in for christina this morning. >> as you head out the door, don't forget the umbrella. a chance of showers coming up, i think a little bit later on this afternoon. outside right now, how about 50? san francisco and oakland, not too bad, 47 in san jose, 43 in santa rosa and napa. no 30s on the board this morning. kind of a mild start as the clouds roll in. and eventually as that front drops in on us, we're going to see the winds pick up. but not much wind in the way of

your morning drive across the bridges and right now, the radar still dry, but as we take you up to the north coast, you can see this line starting to fill in a little bit more. this will drop into mendocino county and lake county later on this morning as it makes its destination into the bay area toward the evening hours. the clouds filling on in, the front up on the north coast and the timing, we think around the midday for the north bay, you're going to start to see showers popping up and maybe light rain and drizzle on the coast and peninsula by the afternoon. through the morning, increasing clouds, here comes the chance of some light rain showers, probably more so for the second half of your evening commute right there across the central bay around 8:00. and 11:00 and midnight, clearing out of the south bay and by this time tomorrow morning, maybe a spotty shower or two. rain totals not going to be impressive at all. enough to wet the roads toward this evening and mainly overnight. this thing may get through so quickly, we hope it should not have much of an impact on tomorrow morning's commute. if you're heading up to the

right now, more on the developing story in the east bay as we learn more about chaos in the college classroom leaving seven people dead, three injured, dozens more traumatized. this is the deadliest school shooting in california history. it began at oikos university and ended five miles away with an arrest at a safe way store in alameda. good morning, everybody, i'm john kelly. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. we're learning more about the victims and about the man suspected of pulling the trigger. >> reporter: good morning to you. oikos university still taped off this morning. oakland police coming and going. police chief howard jordan just wrapped up a press conference and he revealed a little bit more about the shooting rampage and what may have led to it yesterday. that left seven people dead, six of those deceased are women, one man. police telling us the victims are from all over korea, nigeria, nepal, and the philippines. they're 21 to 40 years old. they say the suspect walked in yesterday looking for an administrator who was not here. he took a receptionist hostage, went into classrooms. it was complete chaos. he lined people up and they say he just started shooting. the receptionist, the first victim, the rest, students. police believe he was mad at an the administrator and students for the way he was treated here. he had recently been expelled and the gunfire stopped, they

say, because he realized people were calling for help. >> we believe he stopped because people were able to use the phone. he could've heard people calling 911. as you know, our police communication center is right down the street here. the first call we got yesterday morning was at 10:33, and within three minutes, our first officers started to arrive. >> jordan telling us that goh is cooperating. he is talking with them, but not particularly remorseful about what happened here. they expect charges to be filed in the next few days. they're still searching for that gun involved the 45 caliber semiautomatic weapon and they're going to be searching between here where we are in oakland and alameda where he surrendered. reporting live in oakland, christie smith, "today in the bay." and we're starting to learn more about the suspect in the final days leading up to the mass shootings. oakland police headquarters this morning where investigators are trying to figure out what may have triggered all of these shootings. bob, good morning. >> reporter: and they're getting a better idea from what they're telling us. good morning to you, john, goh is in custody of the sheriff at the jail. they have been interrogating him. they plan to present their case to the prosecutor within the next couple of days so she can decide what charges to file against him. police arrested goh a few miles away at a safeway shopping center in alameda a short time after the shooting yesterday morning. as for possible motive, fellow students tell us that the former nursing student who is a south korea national didn't fit in at the college because of a language barrier and police say he was upset at the school for having expelled him possibly for behavioral and anger management issues. the nbc bay area investigative unit has dug into goh's background and found goh was struggling with significant debt and had been dealing with the

she had been shot. she was in the back of that classroom when bulleting had been flying. she described a chaotic scene inside. the gunman ordering students to line up single file against the wall and unloaded started shooting. she says she would've escaped injury, but decided to go back inside that classroom to try and help a friend. >> i went to help a fellow student and i got shot in the arm. it's okay. >> well, she has been released from oakland's hospital last night. two others still remain there, reportedly in stable condition. well, following breaking news this morning in los altos on the peninsula where a fire has broken out at it appears to be quite possibly a home some sort of structure. most likely a home it is at 1545 country club drive just north of the los altos country club near a villa this morning. it looks like the structure was fully engulfed in flames. we see chopper flying overhead this morning.

these are multimillion dollar homes in this area of los altos this morning. we don't know any reports of how the fire started as of yet or if anyone was inside that home or if they managed to get out. firefighters on the scene of this fire right now. you can see it is still burning there very close to the los altos country club. we'll continue to monitor this breaking news for you this morning, it is 6:36 right now. >> huge structure on fire. we'll keep you posted. holding on to hope. investigators expanding the search for sierra lamar. detectives canvassing areas in morgan hill, san martin, and gilroy this week. they've received more than 900 tips while investigators now are stepping up the efforts. those daily searches with hundreds of volunteers starting to wind down. the community search is set up -- the next community search will be on saturday. this morning, investigators are trying to figure out why five cars have been torched this week in santa rosa. the cars were burned late sunday and early monday on several blocks in west santa rosa,

including big oak drive and one court. in at least two cases, the arsonist got inside through locked doors and set the interior on fire and closed the doors. at least two of the cars were parked in driveways when they were set on fire. let's get another check on your weather. rob mayeda in for christina loren. >> well, we're still watching the clouds spill on in and eventually we will be talking about some showers as we get towards the afternoon forecast in the north bay. it'll be turning breezy too. you'll notice notice those winds picking up as the front approaches us late afternoon, an impact on your evening commute. outside this morning, not too chilly. 40s and 50s right now. you've got cloudy skies keeping your temperatures up. rain on the north coast. arriving right around lunchtime for the north bay and going south of the golden gate as we get towards the evening commute. plan on some showers around the bay area. and then toward 10:00 and 11:00,

leaving the south bay and by this time tomorrow, up in the north bay, temperatures really cooling down for the middle part of the week. notice the temperatures as we go through the day, upper 60s in san jose, close to 60 around the north bay and the rain drops in around 4:00. we'll be cooling off as we go through this afternoon. and speaking of cooling off, next few days, looking at highs in the 50s to near 60, but just in time as we move into easter weekend, temperatures will be climbing again as we approach sunday. mike? >> all right, rob, we do have an issue for folks. big flashing lights we talk about the bay bridge and cig alert. it's opposite your commute. it's at treasure island. the off-ramp there is currently blocked by an earlier accident and sand barrels. those yellow ones you see to help folks from getting injured or reduce injuries after an impact. that's what's going on there. there will be reduced traffic flow as you're heading eastbound. no affect on the freeway on the san francisco side and the bay bridge toll plaza, those metering lights are turned on. that's what will affect the

this morning. a house fire in los altos, still burning, fire crews on the scene this morning, it's 1505 country club drive. very close to the los altos golf and country club north of there. seems it broke out this morning just a short time ago. and firefighters have been on the scene. it's a six-car garage fire right now. we don't know of any injuries thus far, but we're keeping an eye on it. multimillion dollar homes in that area. >> yeah, we'll stay on top of that for. of course, in a perfect world, we try to exercise and eat right. but the question is, are we really putting those goals into action? "today in the bay's" tracie potts is here with a report on how healthy we are here in the bay area. >> good morning, everyone. guess what? some residents in the bay area are among the healthiest in the state. the robert wood johnson foundation puts together these county-by-county health rankings every year. what they found is of the 58

country club drive after foothill expressway, and that is right near the los altos country club. firefighters telling us the building is actually detached six-car garage at a private residence. nobody has been reported inside, firefighters say this building was going experiencing construction right now. the damage at this point, estimated around $700,000, but that fire is still burning strong, it'll probably go up from there. no word yet on what may have actually caused this fire. but we, of course, are on scene and will keep you posted as more information comes in. 6:46 right now. the recent rain has not washed away our dry winter. the sierra snow pack is only 55% of average. an unusually wet march was not enough to make up for the lack of rain in the previous month. the good news, the reservoirs are still in good shape, they say, from last year. and good news, nice start to the day. are we getting any moisture to help out? >> later this afternoon. some showers in the bay area,

eventually getting up to the sierra where will we see snow later on tonight. but speaking of snow, look at last year at this time, we were about 165% of average. this year as you just heard, 55% of average even with the march snow that fell in the sierra. so we've fell well behind thanks to that dry winter and even with the stuff we've got coming in today and again probably next week, still quite a ways behind for this time of year. temperatures this morning, light jacket weather outside, 40s to low 50s, not too chilly. no rain just yet, but around lunchtime, that's going to start to change for the north bay. right now the rain on the north coast is going to sweep to the south as we head toward the evening commute. this frontal boundary should weaken, but a couple of things, the winds will start to pick up, and eventually the rain drops fly to start in the north bay, marin county and through the afternoon now. look at that, 5:00 starting to see showers around the bay area. and game two, the bay bridge series, you might want a rain

slicker heading out around oakland today and by 9:00, we start to see showers moving through the south bay and tomorrow morning around this time, we'll probably see a few pop-up showers in the north bay, but the main effect of this system will be much cooler temperatures wednesday on into thursday. so around the south bay today, upper 60s, close to 70 around gilroy, but notice the numbers drop off the further north you go because the rain will start to fly here. and our temperatures will be cooling through the afternoon as we go through today. and speaking of cooling, maore f that, wednesday, thursday, and friday. temperatures in the 50s to near 60. but the weekend, we're clearing out and warming up. 70s just in time for easter sunday. looking over here, looking at even just the 50s. that's the flow you should expect across the bridge right now. except for right here at treasure island. the off ramp there is blocked because of a sig alert. there was an earlier accident that took out the barrels, they have the left lane blocked, as well now coming over from the

east shore freeway, we have a slowdown for berkeley. headed down toward the curve and the metering lights are on, but this is a lighter flow overall, because the spring break in effect for the school districts, looking really nice right now. 880, a live look out there and see how things are shaping up. northbound across high street, volume of traffic southbound also, but no issues here coming downtown to the coliseum, further south, we do have an issue at washington or 238, couple of earlier accidents. we have some rigs and some cars on the side of the road. that's a distraction. right here, the dublin interchange shows slowing and south of there at 680, showing speeds into the 40s and 50s at times. a 25-minute drive. a lot of slowing around first and vasco, but a smooth drive without any incidents there. the south bay, a nice flow of traffic. northbound 101 here from capital up past an earlier accident, continues to slow down for 87, as well, and that fire over in

"today in the bay" live at oakland police headquarters this morning where investigators are still trying to figure out what may have led that suspect to simply snap. bob? >> and they are making some leeway in their investigation. good morning to you, john. one al goh has been interrogated. police tell us this morning he is cooperative but yet not remorseful for what happened yesterday. they plan to present their case within the next couple of days to the prosecutor so that she can decide what charges will be filed against the 43-year-old suspect. police say that goh was upset with the college for having

expelled him, kicking out they say for his possible behavioral and anger management issues. and fellow students have told us that goh a south korea national didn't fit in at the school because of a language barrier. now, the nbc bay area investigative unit has dug into goh background and found that he was struggling with significant debt and had been dealing with the loss of his mother and brother both of whom had died in the past year. law enforcement is looking into whether the 45 caliber semiautomatic handgun used yesterday is the same one that goh purchased legally last week at a gun shop in castro valley. as for the debt, the irs had issued two liens against goh in recent years totaling more than $23,000. there are also two judgments against him totaling more than $10,000. goh used to live in virginia. he's from oakland now, but used to live in virginia. there's no criminal record there

on him. there are a couple of minor traffic offenses. he also had bought fishing and hunting licenses in that state, as well. we're now going to send it over to christie smith live at oikos university were more details on the shooting itself. christie. >> reporter: good morning, bob. well, the police chief wrapped up a press conference here about an hour ago and he revealed more about what happened behind the doors here saying that the suspect came in and took a secretary hostage and then went to the classrooms and lined students up and started shooting one relative of a student said that suspect goh apparently told the students that they needed to line up because he was going to kill them. the police chief also telling us, of course, that students ran for their lives. investigators believe that goh only stopped because he realized some people were able to call 911. they say as bob mentioned he'd been expelled and was looking for a specific female administrator who was not there at the time.

>> we doe know he was upset at administrators at the school. we doe know that he was upset with several students here because of the way he was treated when he was enrolled here. >> seven people killed, police telling us six of the deceased are women, one man. the police saying that goh is cooperating but not particularly remorseful about what happened here. bob also mentioned that 45 caliber weapon. police said yesterday they indicated it may have been located, that is not the case. they are going to locate that searching between here and alameda where the suspect surrendered. reporting live in oakland, christie smith, "today in the bay." several people are injured after a small plane crashes into a florida super market. the accident happened last night outside of orlando. a single engine plane just had taken off from a nearby airport.

>> president obama still has $84 million to spend in the fall. romney's got $7 million. romney and his super pac have spent $53 million so far on tv ads. that's almost twice as much as all the other republican candidates and their supporters rather combined. and this morning, president obama's coming out swinging against a budget plan passed by house republicans and endorsed by mitt romney. white house advisers say the president will strike back at the $3.5 billion budget proposal at a speech to newspaper executives taking place today. democrats say the budget undermines medicare, slashes taxes for the wealthy and would lead to deep cuts across the government. political insiders say the budget has little chance of passing, the democratic-controlled senate. the market started the week on a strong footing, business and tech reporter scott mcgrew on whether tuesday could trip them up. >> the dow industrials are up about 30 points this morning, nasdaq trading about even.

per hour. our forecast today, notice the coast cooling down, 58 degrees, lunchtime will be the transition to mostly cloudy skies, seeing a chance of some showers. north bay pressing to the south bay around sun down tonight. and this weather system's going to bring in cooler air. look at those highs, 50 to near 60. but finally the seven-day, got it timed out well. 60s and 70s for the weekend, mike. >> that's great news. more great news, looking over here to the lower deck where we had the sig alert. we had an off-ramp closed at treasure island. it has all cleared. and we move that icon, you see a smooth drive in both directions crossing through the tunnel. lighter volume down the east shore freeway. we'll continue to see the build out of richmond and speeds into the 30s and 40s. the south bay shows a similar build. northbound 101, capital expressway, all the way up past the airport. 87, 880, 17 shows a little slowing as well as 85 north right over there, los altos, we have the fire continuing on country club drive.
