checking in with rob mayeda. the reality is cold. i'm fight thing this morning. >> take your blanket off the bed. >> good idea. >> thurts outside now. in the north bay it is cute cold. it doesn't feel like april this morning. we are at 37 degrees in napa. low 40s around places like gilroy and morgan hill this morning. notice we did have rain that moved through overnight. that's the reason why some roadways as you drive out this morning might still be wet from that. but here the story. cold temperatures today. numbers in the mid to upper 50s for highs. also breezy out there, too. which that might be more of an impact on your morning drive. >> the wet roadways not as much of a concern. wind advisories for places like the bay bridge. cameras shaking. not so much here in san francisco. but the gusts might be an issue across the bay bridge. san mateo bridge, let's get you back to the map and show you this shot. look at that. flip it around.

bay bridge as well as to the north, wind advisory continuing to the venecia bridge. >> all right. thank you very much, mike. update now developing news in the east bay. bullied to the brink. this morning, south korean native one goh is locked inside of his jail cell awaiting his first court appearance on charges of gunning down ten people inside of an oakland college classroom. this morning we are learning more about the seven people that died and the man police say felt like he had a score to settle. christie smith is live at the crime scene at oikos university in oakland. we begin with bob redell at the estuary where dive teams have been searching for the gun used in that deadly rampage. good morning, bob. >> good morning. yes. police teams were out here late last night searching this section of the oakland estuary. looking for the . .45 caliber handgun that they

believe one goh tossed on his way to alameda where he surrendered on monday. investigators say that goh has been cooperative in interviews except for when it comes to pinpointing the exact location of where he allegedly ditched his weapon. but other investigative leads point to this area. just off the martin luther king jr. regional shoreline center. that's where we are at now. law enforce many uses a remote control sonar robot, police boats, divers out here to perform the search in what they say is the 90 by 75 foot grid. if law enforcement don't find the gun they don't think it will be a make or break against goh. >> it is not critical but it is an important piece and the moss important thing is that we want to protect the public and having a firearm somewhere in our community is something we want to make sure we locate. we want to remove it from wherever it is. >> reporter: this morning, goh is at the jail in dublin. later today he is expected to be

brought back here to oakland for his court appearance at 2:00 to be arraigned on multiple charges and including seven murders. police say that goh bought his gun legally and planned monday's shooting at oikos university. several weeks in advance. and the rampage was so fast law enforce many doesn't think that his victim has any chance to surrender or resist. a secretary and six students who were killed. outside of not pinpointing the location of the gun, police say that goh has been very cooperative in interviews. but not particularly remorseful. >> this morning several bay area families right now making funeral arrangements as we learn more about the seven victims of monday's shooting rampage in an oakland college. christie smith is live at the scene of the shooting spree at oikos university. i can imagine just nothing short of a heartbreaking and sad scene out there right now. >> reporter: yes.

good morning to you. absolutely heartbreaking is the right word. you know, this is a small tight-nutt you don't know. there were only 35 people inside the building on monday morning. and as we know, seven of them died. there are flowers outside of oikos university this morning. they weren't here just yesterday. these are, of course, for the victims of people killed in one of the worst shootings in california history. family and friends came out to a memorial at allen temple baptist church last night. a huge crowd including the oakland mayor that came from all over the world. six women and one man. their lives cut short by a former stun who they believe was upset because he was expelled and he was angry with students who he believed didn't like him. among the youngest victim, 23-year-old grace kim who was studying to be a nurse, 24-year-old catlin ping. a teacher there said that it will be hard to ever go back. >> i don't want to go back.

it is so sad, very tragic, very painful. just -- she's my very, very close friend and now she's gone. everything there will remind me of her. >> reporter: again, the victims are 21-year-old lydia sim, grace kim. the university's website this morning is offering condolences to all of the victims' families and saying classes are, of course, canceled for the near future. crime scene investigators are expected back out here sometime today. they were here all day yesterday. no word on how long this will take to process. reporting live in oakland, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> we will continue to bring you updates on the shooting rampage and the charges brought up against the suspect.

throughout the morning and all day long on our website. happening now, evacuation over a gas leak a few hours ago after a car crashes into a home in san jose. you can see crews there working out on the streets. pg&e says a car plowed right into a house about 10:00 last night. causing a leak. lee homes had to be evacuated. total of three homes for several hours. pg&e managed to stop that gas leak after midnight. but as you can see it is still there on the scene making repairs and you can also probably guess severe damage to that home that was hit. one person at the scene has h to go to the hospital with minor injuries. >> this morning thousands of yahoo employees are bracing for layoffs. scott mcgrew joins us live with more in the newsroom. >> good morning. we have a lot of personal connections to yahoo employees and just literally seconds ago

one of the employees said that there would be layoffs. we are waiting for some kind of official word on yahoo. we have been checking their news releases and official news releases and have seen nothing. it should come any minute now. traditionally this happens before 6:30 in the morning. because that's the opening bell on new york's stock exchange. doesn't have to happen before 6:30 but we expect it to. again, we have had no official word of yahoo layoffs but some of the employees there have been buzzing about it and we continue to wait on word. >> scott, thank you very much for the update on that. i'm sure you will keep us posted throughout the day. more major changing in the work for a bay area fire department. santa rosa city leaders will approve a new labor agreement requiring firefighters to pay more towards their pension and future hires will receive fewer benefits. the changes are projected to save the city about $788,000 just next year. that's about 20% of the city's

current general fund deficit. savings are projected to reach $1.7 million per year over a decade. this morning san quentin inmate convicted of killing another inmay will be sentenced. 33-year-old frank sousa admitted to stabbing 44-year-old edward schaefer to death with a homemade weapon in the prison's exercise yard this year. schaefer, you may remember, had several dui convictions when he plowed into pear and daughter in a nevada cross walk back in 2009. 9-year-old melody died at the hospital. her father lost his leg. in the meantime, suspected serial killer joseph maso will appear in court today to set a trial date. 77-year-old is accused of killing four northern california women during the 1970s and 1990s. the city council says the only large dance hall in town needs to clean up its act or face closure.

the nightclub located near hop yard road and stone ridge drive just off 680 recently has been the site of a shooting and several large fights. one involving hundreds of people. last night the city council set new restrictions to protect public safety. the council reduced the number of patrons allowed in that clb and moved up. >> some homeowners in north bay could soon be paying higher insurance premiums. the flood study being done by the government agency fema. fema is preparing new maps and it will include some properties not currently included in the flood hazard areas. low-lying sections in both ross and mill valley could be affected. marin county will mail letters to residents about the situation. 6:10 now. maybe jack frost hasn't arrived but feels like he is making reservations out there to come in and bother us. >> in the north bay temperatures in the upper 30s this morning. and tomorrow morning, i think, it will be even colder around

the bay area. right now 49 in san jose. mid 40s, oakland and san francisco. that's chilly. right near the water. drop into the mid 40s in april. don't see that too often. little cold outside. at least the winds are starting to back off and had gusty conditions and front one overnight that did bring us some rain. mainly some light rain that came down late in the yesterday and you can see how things are starting to dry out around the bay area. however, we have the cool air that's rushing in and for the next couple of days and will drop our temperatures. we also have some moisture that is going to cross the coast later this afternoon. the north bay and east bay hilltop i think we have a slight chance of a shower or two today. but you are going to feel a chill in the air. highs close to 60 in san jose and pleasanton. upper 50s around oakland to san francisco. 61 in santa rosa. breezes going all day long today. so cool at least through friday. then as we get into the weekend we will see things warming up saturday looks to be the warmest day. cooling down, more rain coming in by tuesday of next week. >> we are going to watch for that right now. we are watching also for this disabled big rig.

northbound 880 getting off at your 5th avenue exit. heading downtown oakland. have a big rig having trouble getting off the roadway. there may be slowing for the next few minutes. it is moving and we will track that at 880, not showing any slowdowns for the time being. further south looking at northbound 808 heading into the area. taillights past high street and moving slowly. volume starts to pick up now. still no major issues as far as speed goes there. all the way down to the san mateo bridge on the southbound side. wind advisories for san mateo, dunbarton, bay bridge. look agent a slow drive westbound 580 out of the altima pass. 6:12. delay of game. why north bay neighborhood does not want to play ball with a pro team after all. >> texas twisters. big riggs flying in the air. neighborhoods torn apart. strong winds, tornadoes touched down. we will tell you more about the aftermath and show you incredible pictures coming up in a live report.

welcome back on a wednesday morning. nice shot off in the distance. that's the bay bridge in san francisco. coming up with the sun trying to sneak up and music is having its own day. also give you a live look at the bay bridge. traffic flowing mootszly out there. going to be always slower. spring break here, yeah. should be able to drive easy. >> certainly not in dallas this morning. twisted metal torn up terrain, hundreds of homes and businesses smashed and flattened after several tornadoes ripped through north texas. this morning, those left live are wondering how they will rebuild. we have a look at all the destruction. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. yeah, now that the sun has come up here in arlington we get a

better look at the debris left behind by the massive tornadoes. we are standing in a neighborhood just riddled with devastation. you can take a look behind me. homes destroyed on both sides of the street. huge trees that were snapped in half like twigs from these massive tornadoes. cars, trucks, even camper trailers tossed on to lawns and just crumpled. there was a similar tornado that touched down in lancaster which is just south of dallas. both about 1:00 yesterday afternoon. the red cross reporting that 650 homes and businesses have been destroyed. 17 people reportedly injured. some critically but incredibly despite the massive destruction no fatalities so far. that's the good news. there are still thousands without power. 150 people still in shelters today but today more about assessing the damage. allocating resources to get that relief. three teams are on the ground to do just that. >> just amazing to see the

pictures. i can't imagine what you are seeing in person. thank you very much. this morning american airlines is urging bay area passengers to call ahead or check its website if you are planning on flying to the dallas area from sfo and san jose international. yesterday the airline canceled close to 20 flights in both airports just because of the tornadoes. >> lot of devastation. much smoother here. looks like the rain is behind us. rob in for christina. chilly day here. yeah. we are going to see temperatures in the 30s and 40s for the morning. and as we take you back to what was happening over in texas yesterday, they had softball-sized hail coming down. some of the big super cells damaged about 100. lingering effects of problems, i think, for some of the regions because the flights work, they may originate from dallas headed to phoenix and getting to sfo. 100 planes damaged at dallas-if the worth yesterday and could con is on to see flight delays. classic severe weather setup.

moisture coming in off the gulf of mexico. system that brought us rain over the bay area. now moving towards the rockies as the two come together. right over dallas yesterday. you had outbreak of tornadoes. about 18 reports yesterday and as you just heard from our affiliate there in arlington and dallas. tornado survey under way today. we will continue to see a lot of damage. not just the tornadoes but again softball-sized hail that caused problems. around the bay, nothing warm about these temperatures. 30s across the north bay, mid 40s elsewhere. winds are starting to back off a little bit. so that's good news. it will be a cool day today. highs mainly in the 50s. and slight risk for showers. especially in the north bay hilltops. we had light rain overnight. and that cool air plunging into the bay area right now. you can see some of that cold air offshore at the popcorn-like clouds just off our coast. that's an indication of cool air aloft. does not have a lot of moisture but could still be enough the heating of the day right here around the marin headlands and east bay hilltop 1:00, 2:00 in the afternoon. might see an isolated shower two. one thing that will be widespread will be the cool

temperatures today. highs close to 60 in san jose. 61 in pleasanton. upper 50s around livermore. mid 50s around the coast. cool day today. tomorrow into friday, cool. timing for the 7-day forecast does not look that bad. we will warm up some important sat dawe, easter sunday looks dry showers off to the north bay. >> might be a bummer for some of those easter egg hunters. we will watch for that. we will have a smooth drive. this morning continues 20-minute drive. through livermore, 50s into pleasanton and towards the dublin interchange. we will also watch further south. sonoma, problem 880 through millipede mil milpitas. 40s where you see the yellow. 40s and 50s. here highway 87 shows slowing into the 50s. northbound traditional backup spot. starting now construction cleared from 85 expressway off

ramp. showing a nice smooth drive along lower bay shore. 101, 280 along the peninsula. dunbarton bridge, we have warning. high wind advisory issued overnight by chp here as well as san mateo bridge. of course, things are not that bad right now. the gusts might catch you from time to time. keep that in mind across the bay bridge as well. earlier disabled big rig, downtown oakland, that's cleared from the area. right over here. giants and a's face off today. midday traffic, lunch time traffic around the at&t park will get worse because of the crowds heading there. right now a live look. 101 towards the split. lower deck getting out of the city. smooth drive for 101 into the city. or out. both directions with the tail lights heading south moving nicely. >> mike, thanks a lot. apparently this morning, the force is not with george lucas. yesterday the county board of supervisors put a delay on lucas' plans for a new

development out there near skywalker ranch. the filmmaker wants to revamp that land with the production studio, restaurant and a general store and a tasting room. and parking for at least 200 cars. the county board asked the staff to review concerns cited in an environmental impact report and then reported back to them in a month or two. >> 6:21. coming up corporate cash flow. why the bay area's largest city is catering to the skret set crowd. >> yahoo making it official less than two minutes ago. it wil lay off 2,000. a look at that coming up. breaking news. we are getting official word yahoo will be laying off employees. scott mcgrew has the latest for us. >> good morning. this just being released. financial reporter yahoo saying lit indeed lay off about 2,000. this is ceo scott thompson you see on the screen. he is the new ceo. he is make something very difficult decisions as he tries to right yahoo's ship the. the company announce thing morning it deeply values its people and all they contributed. you know press release that starts that way is bad news. 2,000 will be informed about the changes. the press release says part of that effort, they will be notified about their job elimination or phased transition sometime today. yahoo expects to save about $375

million. this is not the only bad news for yahoo in the last 24 hours. as you heard, yahoo has been going after facebook accusing facebook of violate yag yahoo. facebook last night fired back with its own set of software patent claims. most interesting, caught yahoo off guard, yahoo expected face balk to roll over and pay money. tech blogger sarah lacy points thought morning the fight makes facebook look luke the good guy. facebook, she writes, suddenly found itself cast in the delicious role of defender of the silicon valley way and n the name of innovation. these layoffs, again, coming just a few minutes ago. just shortly before the opening bell. i had our fellows who do our graphics pull something together. when we talk about yahoo, in many ways we overreport this company. apple is worth $586 billion. google, about half of that.

yahoo worth $15 billion. in fact, that circle really should be a pinpoint. 2,000 people losing their jobs. this is terrible news. but in the grand scheme of things, honestly, yahoo is not a very important company. frankly, we overcover it. 2,000 layoffs that will cover. yahoo is in deep trouble as a company. >> as always, scott, thank you very much. great stuff there. cast-strapped san jose airport, catering more to high-end customers. the city council narrowly voting to open up the west side of that airport to more corporate jets. the city will look at plans to expand general aviation services on 44 acres. the supporters say that it could eventually bring in more money to the cash-strapped air ports which is really -- has failed to see any revenue rise with the completion of that beautiful new terminal. it is 6:26 now. still to come on "today in the bay," a battered boat stranded at sea could soon be back in the water. we will tell you when it will be

4. this is "today in the bay." good morning to you. thanks so much for joining us. 6:30 now. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm jon kel xwrip let's jump into it and check with the weather. mother nature has the right to be fickle. very warm yesterday. chilly today. >> bit of a roller coaster ride. close to 70. today lucky if we are up to 60. this morning right now we are seeing numbers in the 30s around the north bay. 49, san jose. that's as warm as it gets. 37 in napa. you see mid 40s oakland and san francisco. we have wet roads from the overnight rain that went through during the day today. partly cloudy skies. highs mostly in the 50s. other thing you have to watch out for breezy conditions in our hilltop and around the mid span of the bridges this morning. >> all right. great notes for our drivers the take with them. possibility of slick roads before the sun dries things out. sun coming up now.

attended as well as leaders from all faiths, crime scene tape is still up. later crime scene technicians are expected out here. no word on exactly how long it will tack to process this entire scene. reporting live in oakland, christie smith, "today in the ball." 6:35. this morning police on the peninsula are searching for thieves that broke into about 100 high school lockers. palo alto police investigators say thieves used bolt cutters to get through a fenced area at palo alto high school this week and bust flood the lockers. police aren't sure if anything was taken or missing because students don't get back to campus until april 9. so far no suspects have been arrested. this one reminiscent of the scene last november at u.c. davis. police pepper spraying dozens of students at a college rally this time in southern california. cell phone videos shows about 200 students banging and

chanting at santa monica college board of trustees meeting last night. students there very upset over the cost of summer courses. about 30 students were treated for minor injuries and the school stepping up agreeing as you can see students just covering their eyes there and the school agreeing to take on all medical expenses. wow. 6:36 now. a yacht badly damaged by monster waves is undergoing repairs now in the bay area. it pulled in yesterday. the crew lost the ability to steer the boat in a violent storm over the weekend. two of the crew members were badly injured and had to be evacuated by the coast guard. they are taking part in an around the world race and organizers hope to set sail again later this month. >> that does not sound real relaxing to me. 6:36 now. meteorologist rob mayeda checking in with what's happening outglide we have you covered there and cruise ship coming in to the embarcadero this morning. relaxing way to go around the

world. right now this morning it is cold outside. we have 30s around the north bay. mid 40s elsewhere. showers for now have shut down. we have some cool air aloft that's going to come on in. that will keep the temperatures during the day in the 50s and possibly trigger isolated hour or two around some of our north bay and east bay hilltops during the afternoon. so our temperatures today, you can see it all through the day. mid to upper 50s for most of the bay area today. we are going to stay cool at least through friday. just in time for the start of the weekend. temperatures starting to warm up as we head towards saturday and sunday. >> rob, let's get you out to san rafael where we are looking at southbound 101. smooth drive right here. folks are traveling down past and further south. let's show you the maps and we will talk about the issue. disabled vehicle reported southbound 101 right as you approach the parkway. we don't have any slowing at the scene and it sounds like it is able to move to the shoulder but all those cars heading down to the area potentially or maybe they will go across that bridge. top of your screen. wind advisory there as well as the bay bridge, both moving smoothly. backup at the toll plaza for the

welcome back. safe to say it has been a very unusual and unpredictable ski season to say the least. ski resorts right mere in california and over in nevada now reporting double digit declines in skier visits and lift ticket sales. it has been a warm erwinter than we usually get. most northern california ski resorts. major snowstorms didn't even begin until almost march. a big effect up there in the mountains. >> what do you think, will we get to see any more? >> usually as you get into april the snow level starts get to higher and you don't add to the snow pack. but you know, march was the exception to the rule. we had about 30% of average snow pack and all after sudden we had all that rain and snow. statewide the average did jump

to 55%. we had that snow survey at echo summit a couple of day ace go it is nowhere near where we were last year. 165% of average is what we had this time last year. quite a difference. there's still time but right now we are at the two-minimum warning and fourth quarter here at the snow pack building time of year. we could get more snow if we get into the -- looks like the beginning of next we. right now around the bay area, cold. 30s and 40s outside. winds backed off. gusty overnight as the front went through. brought us a little bit of rain. moves off to the east. bunt behind this system we have cold air spilling into the bay area. between sunshine today. you are going to want a jacket and with some of the moisture, that drops in over the north bay hilltop and around the east baywatch this as we get towards 2:00. you can see a few showers there. north and east bay hills. wouldn't be surprised to see some of that, too, around santa cruz mountains for the afternoon today. not widespread but isolated showers here and there around the hilltop and as we head towards the evening, things start to dry out once again. yesterday had highs closer to

of morgan hill. update on developing news this morning where oakland police are searching for the gun used in monday's execution-style killings at a small christian college. bob redell is live in oakland with the latest developments for us. >> reporter: good morning. low tide here at the oakland estuary shoreline. gives you an idea why it would be difficult to find the gun. lot of rocks and debris. police divers were out here late last night. searching the shoreline for a .45 caliber handgun. they believe goh tossed it in the water before he surrendered. goh has been cooperative in interviews except for when it comes to pinpointing the exact location of where he allegedly ditched this weapon. other investigative leads point this to this area off the martin luther king jr. regional shoreline center. law enforcement employed a remote control sonar robot.
