oh, yes, thursday morning. good morning, everyone, it is 4:31. lots to get to this morning, we welcome back christina loren, fresh from a little time off. >> yeah, good morning to you. it's actually cold out there this morning. we had a frost advisory earlier, it has been canceled because temperatures have been able to stay above that freezing mark, at least for the time being courtesy of some pretty good wind. so that wind as long as it maintains above 5 miles per hour up in santa rosa, you should stay above freezing. we lose that wind, though, we drop like a rock. headed toward a nice day, i've got your weekend forecast ready to go first. let's check your drive with mike. >> first we'll take you to the south bay just off of 101. east of the freeway we do have an accident involving what sounds like a car that may be on its side. this might be an issue getting to or from 101.

traffic through the south bay is light right now. i do want to shout out also the san mateo bridge. wind advisory as well as the bay bridge, we get a live look out there and maybe not. not a lot happening, but the camera was shaking and the sign was lit up. it may be an issue on the high-rise here as well as the bay bridge. back to you. >> thank you very much, mike. new details in the oikos campus shooting. police now say the suspect one goh may have had a different target. >> yesterday said the intended target was the program director. but now that all may not be the case. "today in the bay's" christie smith is live in oakland with the latest details on this. good morning, christie. >> yeah, good morning, john. there is new information that the person police believed was the intended target of the gunman's rage here on monday in oakland is actually not the correct person, and that is a

different administrator altogether. it was initially believed that it was the director at the nursing program at oikos university, but now according to the a.p., the police chief believes it is a different female administrator altogether. but he declined to say what this new information is that led them to this or who she is. in fact, this person fears for her safety. this comes as family and friends came together to honor another victim of the shooting rampage. sim who had been studying to become a pediatrician. they gathered at the korean baptist church. of course, seven people were killed on monday, three wounded. mental health experts are concerned that those who escaped may suffer anxiety attacks or even guilt. >> guilt of surviving. they may feel sad or cry a lot. maybe avoid people. >> reporter: now, there are reports that the suspect one goh

hill. five quakes have struck just north of the city in the past 24 hours. hit about 9 miles north of morgan hill before 3:00 a.m. measuring a 2.8. two similar size quakes were recorded around 1:00 this morning just after 25 minutes after that, a magnitude 1.3 was recorded. yesterday, a 2.3 quake was recorded just about a mile away. also in the south bay this morning, they're certainly not giving up the search for 13-year-old sierra lamar. today, teens will fan out north and south of morgan hill. about 20 members of the sheriffs search and rescue unit will be sent to look for evidence. it's not clear why the unexpected search was announced. this is in advance of another volunteer search plan for this saturday. also today, sierra's father, steve lamar, will return to his job at a silicon valley start-up. his first full day of work since his daughter vanished nearly three weeks ago. in an exclusive interview he

explained how he and sierra's mother have been advised not to go on any more searches for their own good. >> every day that goes by, it gets harder. to be honest about that. it gets harder. but, yeah, i'm still staying positive. i think that's important. >> investigators say they've received more than 1,000 tips and they've received so many by phone and e-mail. and laura, this morning, the man accused of brutally killing a family of five due back in a san francisco courtroom. charged with five counts of murder with special circumstances for the march 31st killings near city college. now, those charges make him eligible for the death penalty. but the d.a. says he will not make it a capital case. he is expected to be arraigned today and could enter a plea. well, police hoping surveillance footage will help them track down teens who beat

up a man. a ticket agent saw what was happening and called for help. but by the time the police actually arrived, all three suspects had already run away. the victim was taken to the medical center. police tell us at this point it was unclear if the attack was an attempted robbery or if the victim knew the teen. it is 4:37 right now. the suspect in a fatal hit-and-run crash tells police he ran down two pedestrians in sunnyvale on purpose. he's being held on $1 million bail after causing a second accident in los altos both within minutes on saturday. he has admitted to investigators he hit two people in a crosswalk on hollenbeck avenue and drove into the path of a second car a few miles away. one of those pedestrians died monday, the other remains in a coma. one witness could not believe what she was seeing.

>> i was just so scared. i say, barbara, come here. i'm so scared. two bodies on the ground in front of my house. >> he was arained yesterday on charges including vehicular manslaughter, hit-and-run, and a battery of police officer for allegedly assaulting four officers in custody. an elderly man hit by a cyclist while crossing a san francisco street last week has died. the 71-year-old was in the crosswalk at castro and market streets when he was hit. the man and the cyclist were both taken to san francisco general hospital. the man died there monday. the district attorney's office is in talks with san francisco police about that case. no charges have been filed. san jose police this morning on the lookout for an imposter. police say the suspect drives a dark green compact van, pulls the victims over, some of whom don't speak english and flashes a badge. he asks for a wallet and then returns that wallet minus their cash. the first target was a fruit

vendor at hellyer and palisade drive. then a little bit later on, another incident at sunset and stowe avenues. san jose police want the public to know they never drive green vans. well, we have an update on a recent gas leak scare in a south san jose neighborhood. police have the driver in custody who allegedly caused this. victoria bristow was arrested yesterday after being treated at valley medical center. the 41-year-old being charged with driving under the influence. police say she crashed her suv into a parked car and home near highway 85 and camden avenue. the crash dislodged the home's gas meter causing a leak and ultimately an evacuation. >> luckily no one got hurt in that one. might want to grab a coat before you head out the door. >> you'll probably need a sweater throughout the day. good morning to you, bay area. it's chilly but not as cold as we thought it was going to be.

national weather service actually canceled the frost advisory that was issued earlier this morning thinking that temperatures were going to tumble below that freezing mark. not going to happen. in fact, we've got nice winds that are keeping things mild, mixing up that air and preventing the very, very cold air to settle to the surface. it works out like this today. patchy frost, little bit of frost through your valleys. your windchill gets a lot colder than the surrounding air. a cool, breezy day today, similar to yesterday, just a touch warmer. and if you are looking for warmer weather, we've got that just ahead as we approach the weekend. it all works out like this. at noon, 62, as you make your way home from work inland and not that much cooler by the coast today. but still, only touching on the upper 50s. we've got the mid-60s and 70s on the forecast. first, let's check your drive with mike. >> we have more to report for the south bay. let's hit that first. we have the accident just off of 101. 101 itself moving smoothly

between 680 and the off-ramp. highway 85, a little construction and roadwork going on north of 87 and not any slowing there. i'm going to circle a the the top of your screen. 880 on and off ramps there for the northbound side are blocked and construction continues up. spots up through brokaw, as well. keep that in mind as your northbound direction and north 101, there's construction. also the dumbarton bridge. further north, the san mateo bridge has a wind advisory. we'll get a live look outside, see how things are shaping up for the north bay and a smooth drive. you might get the smaller bridges with a little bit of slickness. back to you. >> thank you very much, mike. new details shed troubling light on the loan given to solyndra. why investigators say federal officials rushed the loan. and some good news for job seekers. how a bill on the president's desk could help give the economy a little boost.

it is 4:44. >> a coat and a smile this morning. new concerns about that giant federal loan to solyndra. treasury department conducted an internal investigation that concluded the $500 million loan was rushed without sufficient review. the report shows the last-minute review lasted about a day. those experts had concerns, but there's no evidence the energy department addressed it. indicators show things are slowly picking up. getting more confident for the future. >> reporter: the toughest job in america finding a job is getting a little easier. just ask mary francis. >> when i first got out of school, it was very hard to find a job and i had to kind of settle for something less than what i wanted. >> reporter: now she's managing a restaurant across the street from the u.s. capitol.

johnny's half shell opened as the economy was tanking. and based on his customers, the owner sees reason to be optimistic and to hire. >> there's been a significant event in the last two years where you're seeing more tourists feeling confident they can travel. >> reporter: in the first three months of this year, the economy added an average 245,000 jobs a month, pushing the unemployment rate to a three-year low to 8.3%. the biggest rebound has been in the service industry, hotels, and retail. >> what they're seeing is many of our shoppers are confident right now, going to the stores, buying more, spending more on discretionary merchandise and that's helping. >> what's not helping, the rising price of gas, making it harder for americans who are working to keep what they make. later today president obama will sign the jobs act designed to help small businesses and the jobs they create. brian mooar, nbc news, washington. right now, let's get a quick

check on the markets opening before the bell. jackie, good morning. >> good morning to you. the futures are pointing to a lower open on wall street. after stocks sold off yesterday. investors took money off the table following a disappointing bond auction in spain renewing concerns about global economic growth. we also saw a slowdown in the nation's services last month. in the u.s. this morning, we're going to get data on new filings for unemployment. this comes ahead of tomorrow's all-important jobs report when the markets are closed for good friday. in the meantime, forecasts are expecting 200,000 new jobs were created in march, the unemployment rate is holding steady at 8.3%. we saw the dow drop on wednesday to close at 13,074, the nasdaq losing 45 to close at 3,068. and dutch shell is looking to build new plants in louisiana to convert natural gas into diesel fuel. shell has similar plans in the middle east that produces enough

diesel to fill 160,000 cars a day. the "wall street journal" says the company may take two years just to determine if the plant is economically viable. and finally, retailers are reporting march sales today. total sales are forecast to rise 3.4%. stores were helped by warmer weather across the country last month, the early easter holiday, and spring merchandise. back over to you. >> very nice, jackie. we'll see you soon. >> we were like that yesterday out here, bright, bright, bright. now the day is brightened, as well. christine is back from a few days off. >> yeah, we're getting spring-like days finally after all that wet weather. now, we do have a cold, dry air mass in place. so it's going to be kind of chilly for the first part of the day. temperatures are in the north bay. and it's a little chilly out there because of that wind. you've got a windchill factor that's making temperatures feel

about 3 to 5 degrees cooler overall. area of low pressure, that's what brought us the rain showers, now trailing mind that front, we've got really cold air in place and it's going to take a while to mix out. breezy conditions as that cold front races out to southern california. throughout the day today, we are expecting a little bit of patchy frost and a few 60s inland today and tomorrow, but the 70s just in time for the weekend. this is not too shabby, right on track to our season highs. highs come in usually at about 3:00 p.m. we've got about 63 degrees in san jose and a little bit cooler by the water, but still touching on the 60s at the coast. temperatures quite a bit cooler this morning because it's so clear out there. and winds were forecast to be calm. that's not the case. the wind is keeping things nice and mild because we're starting out more mild than we thought easily hitting the 60s today and the 70s by saturday. and then we get more rain sunday into monday, spring-like temperatures. well, reality tv coming to silicon valley.

"today in the bay" has new details on a cable show being produced by the sister of facebook ceo mark zuckerberg. >> bra vvo tv announced a new reality show about the high-tech industry following young entrepreneurs as they struggle to be the next big internet sensation. silicon valley says the film has a lot of potential, but don't expect the housewife drama bravo is famous for. >> silicon valley is highly dramatic and yet, you know, no one wants to make enemies because you never know when you're going to be doing a deal with someone. >> the bravo network says the show name "silicon valley" may change, so stay tuned. reporting in menlo park, today in the bay. >> very interesting. >> definitely a reality now right in the silicon valley.

welcome back, everybody. we give you a live look at hp pavilion where the san jose sharks play their home games. a lot of eyes on the sharks and what they're trying to get done on the ice. the sharks tonight are taking on the l.a. kings and they play twice this week to end that regular season. whether they win or lose could make all the difference between making the playoffs or being left at home watching on tv. now the kings, the pacific division leaders heading into the playoff. the sharks play the first game against the kings tonight in l.a., then they go for the home at home to end the season at the shark tank on saturday. go sharks. well, today the nfl will
