go ahead and take that one out there. spring has sprung in the bay area. you can vividly see the flowers blooming everywhere. it's gorgeous. one of those days where taking a drive is going to be very ideal. 34 degrees, though, grab your jacket before doing so up in napa. we're headed toward a gorgeous afternoon. i'll let you know when winter-like weather returns because that is in the forecast. and we've got that easter sunday ready to go. a lot of people have those easter egg hunts planned. there are some breezy conditions around. we had a couple of bridge advisories. right now just the bay bridge with that wind advisory. our camera here shows the shake on the mountain tops, as well. prepare for those gusts. not a major concern for the commute. and we'll look at debris. that is a concern for southbound 680 approaching the interchange with 242. the merge there, this is an issue across all lanes, but no

lanes reported blocked. what a way to wake up. new this morning, small quakes rumbled north of morgan hill. marking four quakes in the area in the last 24 hours. a magnitude 2.7 quake shook at about 1:00 this morning. less than a minute later by a magnitude 2.1. about half an hour after that, a magnitude 1.3 hit the same location. you may recall on tuesday morning, another magnitude 2.3 quake struck about eight miles north of that city. laura, we have an update to developing news in a search for sierra. it's been almost three weeks since sierra lamar was last seen near her morgan hill home. and now after thousands of tips and several suspicious clues, the investigation is heading south. today the sheriff's department launching a brand new day-long search. nbc bay area's bob redell live in morgan hill this morning with a look at the areas investigators and what they'll be focusing on. bob, good morning. >> good morning, john.

we'll be heading south and out of morgan hill as you mentioned tomorrow will be three weeks since sierra lamar disappeared. the 15-year-old never making it to this intersection where she was supposed to catch her school bus down the road from her home. the sheriff's office and volunteers have already searched a 20-mile radius around her home. this morning at 9:00, they will expand that search south to gilroy and san martin. this will involve about 20 members of the search and rescue unit as well as canines that can detect human remains. investigators tell us they have received over 1,000 tips they're following up on. they have nod said what led them to search south, whether it's one of those tips, a piece of evidence, or just a natural extension of the search area. some people who won't be participating in any searches for sierra are her mother and father. law enforcement has advised them against this to protect them from being the trauma of possibly being the ones to find their daughter. steve lamar tells us last night not knowing what happened to his

daughter has made for some very long days and nights. >> yeah. crying every day still. at least once crying, you know. usually when i'm alone, so i try to not be alone very often. >> reporter: steve lamar tells us that today he will go back to work as silicon valley's start-up. this will be the first time going back on the job since his daughter disappeared. again, it'll be three weeks ago tomorrow morning. reporting live here at morgan hill. bob redell, "today in the bay." and we can also tell you that search for sierra taking a new high-tech twist this morning. san jose-based company child quest international assigning a qr code to the missing teen. that code is a series of printed squares and it appears on missing posters. people with the free qr code app on their cell phones can scan that code and be linked directly to a website with more photos and information about sierra. now the code also includes a

highlighted hot line number that immediately connects you with police. 6:04 right now. the man accused of pulling the trigger in monday's mass killing at a small east bay university campus is now charged with seven counts of murder. 43-year-old one l goh was shackled and showed little emotion during a brief court appearance in oakland. goh softly replied yes when the judge asked if he understood the charges. so far he has not entered a plea. right now, we're learning new details about who police say was the initial target when goh went to that east bay campus with a 45 caliber semiautomatic and four magazines of ammunition. christie, a school administrator came forward saying she was the target, but now we're hearing that might not be the case? >> reporter: yeah, that's exactly right. there's been a little bit of confusion around this. but first, i wanted to show you what has changed since yesterday outside of oikos university. when we got here yesterday,

there were maybe seven or eight bunches of flowers and you can see how large it is this morning. and we are learning more about who the real intended target was. it was first believed to be a nursing administrator. she wasn't here on monday, though. well, now police believe that the intended target was a different female administrator altogether. ellen is the nursing administrator and she told the associated press that the suspect goh dropped out of the nursing program in november but had come to her several times asking for a tuition refund and that he got angry when she could not give it all back. police say goh came to the school monday and opened fire on ten people, killing seven. a memorial service was held just last night for one victim, lidia simms. earlier her friend spoke to nbc bay area. >> feels guilty. she -- one of her secretary -- her secretary was like one of her children, one of her girls,

her daughter. she's just devastated. >> now, earlier there were a number of reports that goh was teased by fellow students about his difficulty with the english language. she is saying she didn't see that at all and police have not revealed who this other female administrator is only saying that she's scared to death. reporting live in oakland, christie smith, "today in the bay." there's still no sign of the gun used during monday's deadly rampage. and now police say they are calling off that search until they get better information here about the gun's location. a boat equipped with sonar has searched near the university but had no luck. a dive team also tried to search the area, but we're told the water's too murky to actually locate anything. we will have more on that investigation into the shooting rampage all morning long and of course all day long at nbcbayarea.com also posting updates, of course, on facebook and on twitter pages. new this morning, an elderly

dementia patient may be wandering the streets of san jose alone after disappearing from a home. the police department sent out a tracking canine overnight to find this man. 67-year-old lee hodgen. he's now been missing for more than 12 hours. he was last seen at his board and care home on sierra wood drive in san jose wearing a red sweatshirt and gray sweat pants. hodgen is diagnosed with dementia and has a history of going missing. it is 6:08 right now. b.a.r.t. police investigating a brazen attack at a busy station. officers trying to track down three teens who witnesses say beat a man just outside the station last night and left him bleeding on the ground. officers not sure at this point if it was an attempted robbery or if the victims knew his attackers. a surveillance camera capturing that entire crime. it is now being reviewed by investigators. it is 6:08 right now. an east bay city is being sued by the family of an elderly man who died after being bitten by a

police dog. relatives for 89-year-old jessie porter filed a wrongful death suit. the accident happened last may when police were searching for suspects in porter's neighborhood. a police dog was lifted over his backyard fence and the dog attacked biting him on a leg. that led to infection and partial amputation of his leg. a few months later, he died. a previous claim against the city was rejected. and the family now says it wants changes in the police procedures. there's a man out there carrying a badge, but we can tell you he's not a cop. this morning a thief pretending to be an undercover officer still on the loose in san jose. police say the suspect drives a dark green compact van, flashes a badge and pulls people over. he asks people for their wallets to try and run a warrant check, but then when he returns that wallet.

the very same thing happened at king and mckee roads. then a little bit later on, another incident at sunset and stowe avenues. san jose police want the public to know no, they do not drive green vans. it is 6:10 right now. janitors take to the streets in a protest over pay. 700 janitors will march through palo alto today. starting at 11:00. the march comes on the day the janitors union voted to authorize the may 1st strike. the statewide contract of the seiu united workers west expires in one month. 6:10 right now. and after a couple of well-deserved days off, christina loren's back in the mix with us. welcome back, what's happening outside? >> i came back just in time for friday eve. and we've got a holiday weekend shaping up. so i can tell you right now we're going to hold off on the rain at least until the second half of easter sunday. this morning, though, you'll need a jacket. you can leave the umbrella at home. temperatures are tumbling up in

this morning in sunnyvale and san jose. a cold air mass in place. area of low pressure now pushing to the south. and we got really cold air trailing behind it. it's going to take a couple of days to mix out. i think by noon today you'll be able to pull off a layer. it will be on the breezy side. cold morning, sunny days, 60s inland and building breeze that will be at its max later on as you commute home at about 5:00 p.m. winds at the strongest. future cast shows you that. you can see here from the key, you get those pinks, the purples and oranges, a stronger wind gust at 5:00 p.m. as you're commuting home. you want to take it easy. over your open-water bridges, but by 4:00 a.m. friday, starting to clear you out coming to the winds. nice calm start tomorrow morning, will make for cold conditions, but the warm-up is on. 61 degrees in san jose. 71 by saturday, sunday, easter sunday, clouds increase, a few showers. looks like sunday evening into monday morning. but that best chance will be up in the north bay. i think in the south bay will

radiation therapy in cuba. chavez has been recovering well after a february surgery that removed a second tumor near his pelv pelvis. he will beat cancer to win reelection in october he says. and this morning china struggling to restore several government websites allegedly hacked by the government group anonymous. they say they hacked the sites to protect restrictions. the chinese government blocks users from seeing social media websites like facebook and twitter. new reports say the treasury department was given one day to look over solyndra's numbers to hand out that more than $500 million in funds. that's the latest in a long stream of criticisms over that deal. >> good morning to you. it wasn't the treasury department's responsibility really to approve or disapprove the solyndra loan. it was the energy department's loan. but because the treasury cut the check, it was given an opportunity to look at solyndra's balanced books. treasury says the process was

far too rushed. this report written by treasury's top inspector also points out the department really didn't understand what its role in the examination of the numbers should have been in the first place. put it another way. the treasury's saying we only had 24 hours to do something and the law, the way it's written is not super clear as to what we were supposed to be doing in the first place. this report says the process was rushed so that energy secretary chu could issue a press release. other news, several apple bloggers say apple's looking into connectivity problems with the wi-fi only version of its newest apple ipad. an internal apple memo says employees at the store should exchange bad ipads for good ones and the bad ipads back to be tested so apple engineers can figure out what's going on. and gadget reviewers have started publishing their impressions of that new phone, the lumina 900. if the latest smartphone from

that might not be the case, christie. >> reporter: yeah, good morning to you, laura. a number of new developments, the woman initially identified as the potential target of the gunman who came here monday. well, now police are saying she isn't. they're saying he probably came looking for a different female administrator, but they're not saying who she is. police chief didn't reveal any names. this according to the a.p. now, that woman, the first woman is the director of the nursing program here. and the police chief told the a.p. earlier that she was the apparent target. and she thought so too because she apparently denied suspect goh's request for a tuition refund. she wasn't here monday when police say he came to the school and opened fire killing seven people wounding three. just last night there was a memorial for one of the victims. her funeral will be held later today.

an expert with the asian community mental health services center are offering support to survivors who say may suffer from anxiety or even guilt. >> i think because of stigma many people have difficulty saying i have depression or sadness. >> we're in this new country where, you know, we don't need to be worrying about all those other things. get some help for yourself or your family. >> reporter: now, initially police also said that they thought one of the reasons that goh was upset was because he was expelled from the school. but he is saying now he was not. there were also reports he was teased for his difficulty with the english language. but now some teachers here are saying that they never saw any evidence of that either. reporting live in oakland, christie smith, "today in the bay." also this morning, the man accused in the murders of five people inside a san francisco home expected to answer the charges. charged with five counts of

murder with special circumstances for the march 23rd killings near city college. now, those charges do make him eligible for the death penalty, but the d.a. says he will not make it a capital case. he's scheduled to be arraigned today and could enter a plea. 6:34 right now. an update to developing news in the search for sierra lamar. the santa clara county sheriff's office suddenly announcing it has additional areas to check today. bob redell is live in morgan hill where the teenager disappeared nearly three weeks ago. good morning, bob. >> yes, and almost three weeks ago from her disappearance this morning, the search will be heading out of morgan hill. good morning. the sheriff's office along with volunteers have already searched the roughly 20-mile radius around her home and this intersection where she was supposed to have caught her bus to school almost three weeks ago tomorrow. today, the search heads south to san martin and gilroy. investigators aren't saying if they had specific information or if this is a logical extension

of the search area. the search will run from 9:00 to 5:30 tonight, the sheriff's office will call in around 20 members of their search and rescue unit as well as three canines capable of finding human remains. investigators are working on a theory that someone abducted the 15-year-old before she went to school. her dad who we spoke with last night realizes this is a strong possibility but holds out hope this nightmare has a happy ending. >> dream sequence would be that sierra walks through the front door and says, mom, dad, i made a mistake. i took off and i shouldn't have, and i'm sorry to put you through all this. >> reporter: people have phoned in or e-mailed over 1,000 tips to the sheriff's office that we understand investigators are trying to follow up on. reporting live here in morgan hill, bob redell, "today in the bay."

>> and for the latest updates on the search for sierra, visit our website, nbcbayarea.com, type sierra into the search bar on the home page. well, laura, the suspect in a fatal hit-and-run crash telling police he ran two pedestrians down intentionally. the 45-year-old being held on $1 million bail after turning himself in for that hit-and-run and causing a second accident in los altos. both within minutes of each other on saturday. admitting to investigators, yes, he hit two people in a crosswalk on hollenbeck avenue and sped away allegedly, drove right into the path of a second cart a short time later a few miles away. one of those pedestrians ended up dying monday. the other one right now remains in a coma. one witness said she could not believe what she was seeing. >> i was just so scared. i told my neighbor, i said, barbara come here, i'm so scared. two bodies on the ground.

>> he was arraigned yesterday on charges including vehicular manslaughter, hit-and-run, and battery of a police officer for allegedly assaulting four officers in custody. it is 6:36 right now. an oakland charter school will continue to operate despite an ongoing investigation by the state. city school board narrowly voted yesterday to keep the american-indian public charter school open. it comes as it's being investigated for fraud and mismanagement. early findings show more than $1 million in payments were made to its founder ben chavez and his wife. he took in $250,000 in rent annually from the school. signed $500,000 checks on construction projects for his personal business, allegedly. there are also issues on other expenses and ways the nonprofit board members operated. is it just me? or is it hard to believe that the holiday's almost here of easter? >> easter already.

welcome back, everybody. hey, if you're looking for work right now, there may be good news out there. it might be easier to land that job. brian mooar live in washington, d.c. this morning. he has a look at some of the jobs on the rebound. brian, good morning. >> hi, john. we'll get to that in a second. later on today, president obama is signing something called "the jobs act" which is designed to help small businesses and the jobs they help create. this comes as the obama administration looking for some very good news on the jobs front tomorrow as those new numbers are announced. right now, the economy has been creating 245,000 jobs a month over the past three months. that puts the unemployment rate at a three-year low, 8.3%. and where have those jobs been rebounding? in the service industry.

yesterday morning, a 2.3 quake was recorded, that one was just about a mile away. >> quite a few clusters there. what a way to wake up. also nice to wake up to nice weather. let's check in with christina loren. >> it's almost completely clear out there. a few high wispy clouds. deceptive sunshine for the first part of the day because we are starting out really cold this morning. temperatures a couple of degrees away from freezing in santa rosa, napa, and fairfield. elsewhere, the low to mid-40s. so cold enough for a jacket, but something you can peel off by about noon as many cities will be approaching the 60s at that point. chilly conditions left over from an area of low pressure that's now racing into central portion of the united states. the cold front is dragging into southern california. for us, breezy conditions left behind and a couple days to get that cold air out of here. we're talking about the 60s today and tomorrow, and then as we head through saturday, the 70s return. so 61 degrees today in san jose,

63 in los gatos, and 62 degrees in redwood city. i want to spend a little bit of time on your seven-day forecast because we have changes on the horizon. as we head into friday, a little bit warmer. you'll be at 65 degrees tomorrow inland, 63 by the bay. saturday, we warm you up, warmest day of the week, 71 degrees, nice conditions inland, and then sunday morning, we are going to see a fair amount of cloud cover, but we're going to hold off on the showers until the second half of sunday. so if you wanted to have an easter egg hunt any time between 7:00 and mid-morning hours, that will be ideal. after which time those clouds will increase ahead of an area of low pressure slated to bring a shower sunday night into monday. by tuesday, a mix of sun and clouds holding on to very comfortable conditions. very much so on par with our seasonal average, 64 degrees tuesday, 61 on wednesday. all right. it's 6:47. you've got to get to work today and tomorrow, mike's here to help you out. >> weekend looks great, but got to get through thursday and friday.

22-minute drive slowing in general. standard flow here, but the accident at the dublin interchange, westbound 580 might be clear, might be on the northbound 680 as you come through that bend there. there's an issue, we don't know which part of the connector it is affecting. no major impact, no injuries, but still that will add to the slow down. southbound 680, as we talked about the volume an issue there. southbound 680 at mission so the fremont funnel there will be more of an issue coming off of 680. not really a need to stay clear of it yet. we don't see any backup forming here. getting down to the south bay, smooth drive for 680 and 880, 101 shows you slowdown toward 680 itself. but look at that, highway 87. had a tough week so far and looks like it's off to a slow start right here. no incidents reported. that's what we've got, though. bay bridge, pretty good approach for 24 and the rest of the

feeder roads. east shore freeway, 19 minutes, slowing through richmond down towards berkeley. and a live look at 880. the volume of traffic holding steady. southbound very pleasant, as well. back to you. >> thank you very much, mike. after weeks of searching and few clues to go on this morning the search for sierra lamar takes a new turn. nbc bay area's bob redell live in morgan hill this morning with a look at the areas investigators just announced they'll check today. good morning, bob. >> reporter: yes, good morning. tomorrow marks three weeks since sierra lamar disappeared. never having caught her school bus at this intersection here down the road from her home. the sheriff's office and volunteers have already searched a 20-mile radius around the 15-year-old's home. this morning at 9:00, they will expand that search south of gilroy and san martin. the search will involve about 20 members of the department's search and rescue unit as well as three canines who can detect human remains. investors tell us they have

received over 1,000 tips they are following up on. they have not said what has led them to search, whether it's one of those tips, a piece of evidence, or just the natural extension of the search area. some people who won't be participating in any searches for sierra are her mother and father. law enforcement has advised them against this to protect them from the trauma of being the ones to possibly find their daughter. steve lamar told us last night not knowing what happened to his daughter has made for some very long days and nights. >> crying every day still. at least once crying, you know. usually when i'm alone so i try to not be alone very often and -- >> steve lamar tells us that today he goes back to his job at his silicon valley start-up. this will be his first time back to work since his daughter disappe disappeared. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." and new details in the oikos university shooting. police right now saying the gunman may have had a different

initial target than originally believed. christie smith live from oakland with an update on this tragic shooting. christie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, john, yeah. oakland police saying it may have been a different female administrator who was the intended target, not the one they initially believed. that woman also actually believed that the gunman may have been coming for her. ellen is the director of the nursing program at the university. she thought she could have been the target after she denied a full tuition refund to the former student goh who left the school. police believe he came to the school monday looking for an administrator and then shot seven people wounding three others. investigators aren't say who they think this new intended target is, only that she is very scared. and this comes as family and friends struggle to cope with the loss. they held a memorial last night for one student lidia sim.

her funeral is scheduled for later today. police also said that goh was upset because he was teased because of his difficulty with the english language. but now instructors are saying they didn't see any evidence of that. reporting live at oakland, christie smith, "today in the bay." 6:52 right now. happening right now, syrian troops attacking towns across the country ahead of a cease-fire next week. the attacks appear to be a push from president assad to make gains on the ground before tuesday's truce. the cease-fire put forward by u.n. envoy annan to end the crisis which has claimed the lives of more than 9,000 people. in pakistan, a suspected suicide bomber killed two people this morning. the southern port city of karachi. among the dead, a senior police official. five others were also injured during that blast. the apparent target of the bombing, the city's police chief was not harmed. and in western afghanistan, the taliban is claiming

responsibility for a deadly attack at a militia outpost. at least ten members of the government-sponsored security force were shot and killed. connecticut may become the next state to ban capital punishment. state lawmakers there approving a bill -- tabled last year during the high-profile death penalty case of two men who murdered a mother and two daughters then set their house on fire. the father of the lone survivor, he opposes the repeal. if the legislation passes, connecticut would be the fifth state to abandon capital punishment. next november california will vote on its own repeal. 6:53. the man in the middle of the penn state sexual abuse scandal will be back in court today. jerry sandusky attending a pretrial hearing. his attorneys will ask to dismiss some charges. requesting more information regarding sandusky's accusers

including specific ages and dates of alleged sexual abuse. the former football coach is facing more than 50 counts in connection with a sexual assault of ten children. this morning, a tuition pricing system that led to another pepper spraying incident involving student protesters may be reviewed by the california attorney general. we have video showing the students being sprayed by police as they try to push their way into a santa monica college. trustees, that was a trustees meeting tuesday night. the students were protesting the school's plan to charge students more for more popular courses. the community college association wants the attorney general to determine if this policy is, in fact, legal. the president of the santa monica school is defending the decision to use the pepper spray on protesters saying the officers used restraint. 6:54 right now. near the union city border. hayward's development service director already approved the plan. but neighbors there and the united food and commercial union appealing the decision. the group says the market will undercut business at nearby super markets. meantime, redwood city considering a new plan to try to fill vacant spaces downtown. planning commission says it wants to allow offices to fill ground level floors. right now ground floor space is reserved for retail use. so far, no official decision has been made. planning commissioners will review this idea at a later date. 6:56. san jose has been awarded the right to use the word reform. a superior court judge rejecting objections from labor unions over the word. the ruling also allows the city to use the phrase "to protect essential services" in the ballot description. union attorneys argued those words will mislead voters. the rulings did not dramatically change measure "b," chuck reed's

plan to slow pension costs. that measure would require employees to pay more for pensions or choose a cheaper plan. scott mcgrew is back with a check on the markets. >> good morning to you. moving lower again, the dow industrials down about 36 points. yahoo moving lower, as well, this morning. down about a dime a day after that company cut 2,000 people from the roster. we've got the latest first-time jobless claims, lowest in four years tomorrow we'll get the big jobless number and the unemployment rate. proctor and gamble has cut off employee access to youtube and other internet sites after it was revealed employees watch 50,000 youtube videos a day. i double-checked that number. this according to a cincinnati newspaper. this works out to a little less than two videos per day per employee. because proctor and gamble has so many employees. netflix and pandora also blocked. so they will never find out what
