jacket. i'll tell you when you'll be breaking it back out. rain in the forecast 5:00 a.m. >> well, we do have the cold north bay, but so far no issues reported, any frost right there. as far as chp is concerned, but we did have the accident approaching highway 37. it's always the slowing on 101 and 37. it's a live look at the san mateo bridge where we want to tell you about the wind advisory going on for the san mateo and bay bridge, although traffic flowing smoothly. we'll watch as the volume builds up a bit for this friday morning. >> it is 5:01 right now. and we are following breaking news in fremont this morning. police are at the scene of a homicide on central avenue near joseph. we're told a man was shot just before 11:00 last night. he later died at the hospital. we have a crew on the way to the scene. we'll bring you more information as soon as we get it. today marks a grim anniversary. it has been three entire weeks since morgan hill's sierra lamar disappeared. and despite multiple searches and a handful of clues out

there, there's been no sign of the high school sophomore. "today in the bay's" bob redell in the bay where volunteers are gathering to look tomorrow for the teenager. >> reporter: yes, good morning to you, john. tomorrow here at burnett elementary the klaas kids foundation will form another volunteer search to look for sierra lamar of morgan hill who law enforcement believes was most likely kidnapped before school that day. yesterday the sheriff's office search and rescue unit canvassed some neighborhoods and fields in san martin and gilroy. it's the first time law enforcement has taken the search south of morgan hill. searchers were following up on tips phoned in and e-mailed to investigators. this was a lorj call extension of the search area. it doesn't appear anything of significance came out of yesterday's effort outside of sierra's cell phone, purse, and clothes, which were all found

early on. investigators still don't have any clue as to her whereabouts, nor do they have a person of interest. you'd think investigators would be frustrated. >> but frustrated is not a word we're using and we're keeping positive. and our primary goal is to bring her home safely alive. >> if you want to help out in the search, you have to show up here at burnett elementary between 8:00 and 1:00 tomorrow. make sure you bring your photo i.d., you must be 18 years old to participate in this. wear long pants, have sturdy shoes on because you most likely will be sent out in the fields, literally the fields of morgan hill and this south county area. 49ers quarterback alex smith have said it. they will also be out here tomorrow to help look for sierra lamar. this would be the second time smith has participated in such a search. reporting live here in morgan hill, bob redell, "today in the bay." a 24-hour vigil is underway in oakland for the victims of

monday's deadly shooting rampage. members of making oakland better gathered on 66th avenue near the oakland coliseum to honor the dead and injured. the burning candles and collecting flowers and cards. the vigil began at 7:00 last night. also yesterday, police allowed students to go back into the university to pick up their belongings. it was their first time back since the massacre that left seven people dead. the suspect one l goh is in solitary confinement at the santa rita jail. he faces the death penalty if convicted of the charges against him. some bay area students this morning who refused to accept what they call a "back of the bus" education staging a sit in at u.c. berkeley today. high schoolers recently rejected to admissions at cal. ralliers say they are demanding an end to what they see as

discrimination policies. an east bay pit bull attack. police say a pit bull overpowered a woman holding his leash at a shopping center last night. it attacked a man and his dog. fortunately both will be okay. the man who owns that pit bull later surrendered it for quarantine. san jose tenants involved in a foreclosure fiasco will be getting assistance with moving expenses. nine tenants have struck a deal with bank of america giving them until may 1st to move and $1,500 each to cover costs. the tenants say the former owner never told them the house had been foreclosed on since november. san jose's pension reform measure is on hold this morning in rare move. the sixth district court of appeals issued a stay against the measure for the june ballot. the ballots will not be printed for now. the decision follows an appeal filed by city workers over the

language of the measure. san jose mayor chuck reed issued this response to the move. it is unfortunate that the city employee unions are attempting to keep voters from having a voice on pension reform. while we expected these kind of legal tactics, they don't eliminate the need for pension reform. the city workers have until monday and tuesday of next week to present their arguments. if you'd like to see the documents in the case, we've posted them on nbcbayarea.com. this morning, a yahoo ceo trying very hard to reassure the struggling internet company in the wake of 2,000 layoffs. scott thompson says he'll tell employees more about his turn around strategy for the company's future next week. in a memo on thursday, thompson hinted at changes that will streamline the management team. he also blames company bureaucracy for failing to keep pace with google and facebook in the race to sell online advertising. this is thompson's third month on the job, yahoo's fourth ceo

in less than five years. time now to get a look at the forecast with christina loren. >> good morning. it's a little chilly out there. make sure you bundle yourself and the little ones before you head outdoors. a lot of kids off for spring break. and those of you who aren't off for spring break probably get it next week. the good news is, the forecast will hold up your outdoor plans not just today but the extended period, as well. temperatures right now, close to the freezing mark at napa, 35 now in santa rosa. and in addition to the cold out there, we do have a bit of a breeze, very light breeze out of the south-southwest. but you could get caught from time to time. you want to keep that in mind. and the windchill factor playing a role. it feels like freezing when you couple that wind with the cold and fairfield 22 degrees. up to 60 degrees inland and 64 at 4:00 p.m. getting ready to celebrate that holiday weekend. we do have a little kink in the

perry remarking on the speed of that incident and how fortunate residents were that no lives were lost. he also noted how prepared first responders were for the storms saying their efforts likely saved lives. i want to check the forecast right now with meteorologist christina loren, pretty mild here. >> quiet weather here. which is what you want for a holiday weekend. especially when you're going to get the little ones dressed up in their sunday best. don't want the rain and mud to muck up those clothes. yeah, you know they will get them dirty. no matter what you do. full moon this morning. take a look at that. just beautiful. we do have a little chance for rain as we head into this weekend. i'll get to that and get to my seven-day forecast a couple of minutes away from now. take a look at this. a glorious shot of the moon. this is your view across t bay. we've got clear conditions just about everywhere. as we head throughout the morning hours, that clear start making for very cold temperatures. 36 in fairfield, 35 in santa rosa. typically this time of year, we

have a fair amount of cloud cover serving as a blanket trapping in some of that warmth. but it all radiates out in the atmosphere. as we head throughout the day today, high pressure is in control of our weather pattern and it will bring the temperatures up in the mid-60s. a touch warmer than where we ended up yesterday. it's also going to keep your skies nice and clear. and then as we head through saturday, finally a lot of that cold air mixing out and temperatures climbing into the 70s in a couple of cities across the bay inland. you might hit 75 degrees in morgan hill. 64 today for san jose, 63 in freeman, and a comfortable 60-degree temperature in san francisco. 72 tomorrow, 70 degrees by sunday, cooling you down a little bit and adding more cloud cover. and if you're waking up with us in sonoma county, you do have a slight chance for some showers. 20% as we head through sunday night and monday morning. and we're looking good, though, next week, as well. a lot of kids will be off for spring break. temperatures will be in the 60s. you might be able to hit the

beach as we head through the end of the week as temperatures climb. let's see how the drive is shaping up at 5:14. >> yeah, you know at 5:14, some folks have already done their full day's work or full night's work over here. winding that up for 880. as you're coming northbound up toward 237, you have construction blocking a lane or two, but as you see, no slowing on the northbound side. that crew has the onramp closed there, as well for another half an hour, possibly 45 minutes and that might be an issue. just use brokaw or 237 further to the north. the rest of the south bay, looking fine, smooth flow up the lower bay shore, 101 and 280. neither of them showing any slow downs. construction crews are still eastbound. highway 84, might get a gust or two on the high-rise. san mateo bridge, a similar situation. chp did issue the wind advisory across the high-rise and the bay bridge, as well. but signs off the screen warning you about that. no problems reported by any

drivers going over the area. just a note. back to the maps and we'll look at the approach to the bay bridge which also has that wind advisory as we mentioned. a smooth drive down the east shore freeway and along 880. a light volume of traffic today. so far we're seeing that. sun's up for 5:16. it is 5:16 as you mentioned, you'll soon be able to go to the grocery store and see for yourself whether there's pink slime in your beef. in an effort to restore consumer confidence, some beef producers will label items containing the controversial additive. the change has the blessing of the u.s. department of agriculture. the label won't say pink slime, but it will saline textured beef for lftb. and for people with peanut allergies this morning, voluntarily recalling the beverage after four customers

"today in the bay" live at the scene. christie, what's happening out there. >> reporter: good morning to you, john. investigators are here, they have the entire street blocked off. they're working this scene presumably trying to talk with witnesses. we see them walking around. we haven't spoken with them yet, but i have spoken with a couple of neighbors out here who tell me there was a man who was shot on the street that they saw laying down in a driveway of an apartment complex. this is near central and dusterbury right across the street from the dmv. a neighbor tells me around 10:50 last night she was watching tv and heard popping sounds, but the commotion started a little earlier. here's what she had to say. >> before prior to that, that's what our neighbors said they heard a lot of arguing and it got quiet for a half an hour. then all of a sudden a lot of screaming. >> reporter: she says that

disappeared. and despite multiple searches and a handful of clues out there, there's been no sign of the high school sophomore. volunteers are gathering again tomorrow to look for the teenager. good morning. >> reporter: yes, here at burnett elementary. good morning to you, john. there's been more than 1,000 tips coming into the santa clara county sheriff's office. hundreds and hundreds of man hours searching several miles around morgan hill. and as you mentioned, here we are three weeks later and there's no sign of this missing 15-year-old girl. investigators are working on a theory she was most likely abducted near her home in morgan hill before school three fridays ago. now, outside of sierra lamar's cell phone, her purse, and clothes, which were all found early on, there's been no other clues surrounding her disappearance that the investigators have made us aware of. law enforcement did move they search efforts south of morgan hill for the first time yesterday to canvas areas in san

martin and gilroy. it doesn't appear they found anything that helps answer the question of where is sierra lamar. a nonprofit hoping yo e ining y. they created these qr codes, quick response codes you're seeing oen the posters. they give anyone with a smart phone instant access to information on sierra's case. >> sierra -- >> and they can scan the qr code and have additional information from the mobile website and in addition to that, they can actually do one touch dialing directly from the mobile website on their smartphone to contact law enforcement if they have important information or valuable information pertaining to the case. >> and if you want to help out tomorrow, saturday, the d before easter, you can come out here to burnett elementary. get here roughly between 8:00 and 1:00. this search effort is being organized by the klaas kids foundation. bring your i.d. because you need to be at least 18 years old, wear long pants, sturdy shoes

because you will be out there in the field looking for sierra lamar. bob redell, "today in the bay." suspended san francisco sheriff ross mirkarimi is due back in court this morning to prove he's enrolled in domestic abuse classes part of his sentence after pleading guilty to false imprisonment in the domestic violence case involving his wife. the guilty plea was part of a deal with prosecutors that also included probation, community service, and a fine. mirkarimi is still fighting to get his job back after the major suspended him at the conclusion of that case. the bicyclist who hit a pedestrian in san francisco's castro district could face charges. 71-year-old wi died in the hospital on monday four days after the collision. he also had to be hospitalized. prosecutors say that same day chris bucher admitted in an online post that he sped into a crosswalk. he said his late helmet died in

a heroic fashion. prosecutors told the "san francisco chronicle," the post is troubling. it's another good friday protest planned this morning at lawrence livermore labs, anti-nuclear demonstrators gathering to demand an end to the lab's role in weapons development. this one's organized by the peace institute and the livermore conversion project. just last year, protesters blocked that entrance to the lab leading to 33 arrests. well, the head of the u.s. regulatory commission will tour the nuclear plant some time today. that plant located in southern california has been closed now for two months because of a small amount of radioactive steam released from a leaking tube. this one will remain closed while investigators look into exactly why those tubes are failing. authorities now just scrambling to find additional power sources just in case the plant is closed through the summer when energy, of course, is in high demand. 5:35 right now. presidential -- republican

presidential hopeful draws a big crowd at u.c. berkeley. a crowd of ron paul supporters. to accommodate the huge number of people, organizers had to move that event outside. paul talked about restoring civil liberties. >> bringing all our troops home, you know, just staying out of people's business. >> balance the budget, cut $1 trillion. obviously we can't afford anything. people always say, oh, he wants to cut education. no, he wants to cut the money out from the bureaucrats. >> paul says he's not giving up on the republican nomination. it may take his campaign all the way to the national convention. >> and he also says young voters don't want any more wars. ron paul sat down for an interview with brent cannon for his take on what voters are looking for in a presidential candidate. >> because of the civil liberties issue and anti-war and

republicans i think are digging a hole for themselves. they don't want -- they complain about obama not fighting enough wars. and they want to be more engaged and young people don't want the wars to continue nor to pay for them. so i think the only way you can, you know, appeal to a broader base is to change the message a little bit. >> why is it you resinate so well with this younger group of people? >> the most common answer i get is well, you're the only one that's telling the truth. and i say, yeah, but they say the same thing, well, we don't believe them. there's this attitude that i'm trying to tell them exactly what's wrong and what can be done even though i have a dire message about how bad things are. the students young with open minds come away being very optimistic because they at least say, well, you're telling us the truth and give us how we can change things. personal liberty, mind your own business, take care of yourself, make your own decisions.

5:42. that's right, and this just in, john, the unemployment numbers for march were just released minutes ago dropping to 8.2%. "today in the bay's" tracie potts with more on the report for us. >> let me explain that. that's really only part of the story. yes, the unemployment rate dropped from 8.3% to 8.2%. but another big part of this story is that we saw 120,000 jobs created in march. that is half of the job growth that we saw in february. it is significantly less than over 200,000, which is what economists had predicted. so march was a slow month in the recove recovery. still recovering, but a lot slower. we hadn't seen it that slow since last october. still, this rate is now the lowest in three years since january '09. the other thing you want to keep in mind, they do revisions to previous months, both january and february. january saw more jobs than they

previously reported or february did, but january saw less. so that balanced out to about a growth of 4,000 jobs over those two months. and then finally, average earnings, the average worker earned about a nickel more per hour. so the bottom line, unemployment rate is down ever so slightly. disappointing numbers in terms of the number of jobs created. and people are earning just a little bit more. >> and probably holding on to it, as well. thank you very much, tracie. strong words out of north korea over a planned satellite launch. state-controlled tv issuing a warning that any company intercepting the satellite or collected its debris will meet "immediate resolute punishment." threatening to shoot down the rocket if it violates the air space. the international community has condemned the launch saying it goes against nuclear sanctions placed on that country. the pentagon says it's right now monitoring the situation very closely.

and in libya, a cease-fire in place after a week of clashes between rival tribes in the west of the country. tensions erupting over the weekend between militias some 70 miles outside of the capital tripoli. at least 22 people there have been killed, the country's interim government has sent troops to the area to help implement this cease-fire. and looks like a scene from one of those pirate movies, the u.s. coast guard using a high-powered cannon to sink a ghost ship off the coast of alaska. no joke. the 200-foot long japanese vessel was sent adrift after that tsunami last year and nobody was aboard that. the good news, an official, though, with the coast guard say the vacant ship was causing problems for other boats out there because it didn't have lights and it was floating in a very high-traffic shipping lane there. we are back, i guess we'll come back in a few moments here. no, we're not going to be back with sports. we don't have sports.

welcome back, everyone. a beautiful site in the bay area. in the marina palace of fine arts, gorgeous all lit up on this good friday morning. it is 5:55. well, here's a pretty unique story. from the golden gate to the great wall. a bay area band teaming up with a band from beijing for a performance like no other. they're headed to the rose parade. and "today in the bay" tells us about a big-time honor for valley christian high school. >> reporter: well, this is a huge deal. performing in the rose parade, that's very special. and the valley christian high school marching band is in full prep mode mentally and physically preparing for new year's day. but the band did something really nice and invited another band from mainland china to march with them in the rose parade. valley christian is leaving for china this weekend to meet with the chinese counterparts for the first time. and if you're wondering about the language barrier, no worries, they speak the only language that matters, music. >> but to be able to then create
