what's behind it? today's saturday, april 7th, 2012. captions paid for by nbc-universal television good morning, everyone. welcome to "today" on a saturday morning. i'm lester holt. >> and i'm tamron hall. amy robach has the morning off. >> it's great to have you here. those pictures, the flames, you would think there would be loss of life. there was not. it could have been a lot worse. the plane dumped fuel before crashing. it could have been a massive fireball. no death. the two pilots on board ejected from the plane safely and they were able to walk away from the scene. we're live from virginia beach to get details in a few minutes. the latest into the investigation of trayvon martin's death.

simultaneous fact-finding mission on the state and federal level. they're trying to find out if george zimmerman committed an offense or he acted in sefrl defense. plus susan powell, it's been two years since she disappeared and shocking revelations continue. her husband was a person of interest. he, of course, took his own life. now other family members are coming under suspicion. we'll get the details coming up. and dennis rodman, we're used to his flamboyant antics from wedding dresses to tattoos and peiercings, but he sat down with us. >> he'll talk about how he's sick, broke, and has back child support. he tells us his side of the story and we'll get that later in the broadcast. i want to begin with the navy fighter jet that crashed into the apartment.

thanh truong joins us from the crash site. thanh? >> reporter: good morning. it is a good morning indeed. the firefighters say there are no missing persons from the crash zone. they had three people unaccounted for last night and it could be due to the fact that this is a holiday weekend and they may be traveling. this f-15 hornet crashed into basically senior citizens area. many were around the area but now they have found all the people that live in and around that crash zone, so at this point they're happy to say there are no missing persons and it's nothing short of a miracle, they say, when that fighter jet crashed into the apartment complex. you can see those fiery pictures there. they say this is an amazing fact that nobody was killed. four people on the ground were injured. they suffered minor injured. the pilot did manage to safely eject and we're getting stories of heroism coming out of here.

many neighbors watching this in horror as the fighter jet went down instantaneously had to be transformed into rescuers. one group of neighbors ran into a burning building, pulled out one woman before the building crashed. at this point they're happy to say no one killed, no one missing. >> do we know when they're going to remove the vital clues for examination? >> reporter: according to the fire department, they believe that wreckage is going to stay for quite some time. they say their investigation is going to last for about a week. as for the navy investigation, that's going to be a separate matter. right now it's going be there for at least a week, unclear for how long in the long run. >> thanks for the update. now here's tamron. >> thank you. two men lived less than 100 feet. after hearing loud booms, they ran over. they found one of the pilots who ejected from the plane.

sam and jason are with us this morning. good morning. thanks for joining us. >> good morning. >> good morning. >> sam, let me start off with you. you hear this large boom. you've lived in the areaer if a long time. in your wildest dreams, when you ran out, could you imagine what you saw? >> no, not at all. i didn't imagine any dark smoke or flames coming up over our building. not at all. i've been this 12 years. never imagined that. >> jason, you had the presence of mind, you grabbed your cell phone, looked over the fence and grabbed video of what it looked like. what was it like a few yards from all that smoke and fire? >> when we heard the bangs and then heard the screaming, we ran out around back. we looked out -- i looked over the fence and really didn't know what happened at first. and then you could see the flames going up and the smoke going up in the air. it was quite a scene. >> sam, you can hear the sirens in the background.

the chaos of not knowing what was happening, where to go. what were those minutes like? >> i tell you, i don't even know how -- the concept of time on, that everybody was running around. a lot of people were running toward the building. a lot of people were running away from it. but, yeah. there were so many people actually home in the nearby neighborhood it was kind of surprising. and the emts and fire and rescue and police were all getting there, it was chaos, everybody running around, trying to figure out what to do, where to go. >> sam, unbelievable. you actually saw the pilot as well as some of the seat, i guess, that was ejected? >> i did. the pilot ejected. there was a -- from what i understand, two people in the plane. the one that landed was about 30 or 40 yards from my house on the other side of my fence. i could see his parachute hanging still attached to the

building. i ran over there -- i jumped over the fence and there was already an officer on scene tending to him, supporting his head and neck. he was conscious, a little dazed, but he was definitely alive. >> alive is right. and we're so happy that you two are okay and all of your neighbors. it is in credible when you see that video. sam and jason, thank you so much. now here's lester. >> tamron, thanks. mick joins us from the pentagon. what's the question in all this? >> according to eyewitnesss before the crash, they heard that the plane was struggling. one eyewitness said it sounded as if the pilots were trying to restart the engines, others heard an explosion, and many saw smoke and some say flames coming out of the aircraft where the engines are located. it was also reported that the pilots dumped fuel, but now it's believed that that catastrophic mechanical failure that the navy

says contributed to this crash may have caused this plane to lose all the fuel. and one witness who talked to nbc said just before the plane crashed said the engines went silent which may explain explain whied that ha no power and the plane went down. interestingly enough, investigators are going to find out the two crew members on board, the student in the front seat, the back seat, a seasoned instructor. did they do everything possible to save the plane, and since the plane went down only blocks away from toegs. the speculation among the experts is that they probably had no opportunity to save that plane whatsoever, otherwise they would have tried to ditch it in the ocean, lester. >> thanks. once again, here's tam rob. >> now to the late evidence unemployment figures. 120,000 jobs were added in march, down from the 240,000 in february. still, the unemployment rate

dipped to 8.2%. kelly evans is a cnbc contributor. kelly, good morning. >> good morning. >> good to see you. we went from 8.3% to 8.2%. added jobs in mar. is this a trend we'll continue seeing or should we look month to month? >> the problem was expectations going into it were running so high. we had gotten better news on the jobs front, there were better auto sales in the last month. we went into it thinking maybe this would be the fourth month in a row of gains over 200,000, which we haven't had since 1999 and instead we got this report, which showed just 120,000 jobs added last month. the real worry is not so much what this report says but i may turn out like it did last year and the year before. >> i'm happy you used the word "worry" because this is so much

how people feel about the economy. 357,000 for march. that makes that month average the lowest since 2008. that would sound like a vote of confidence of sorts. >> right fewer people are getting laid off or filing for jobless benefits. the problem is we're not seeing strength in hiring. what we need at this point is for more firms and more people to be starting businesses, adding workers. until that kicks in, we really get to that point where it leads to jobs and self-sustaining economy. >> certainly we know this is a global issue. the admission also refers to the economy and the world economy affected all at the same time. specifically asia and europe. >> the problem right now is europe is slowing. asia is slowing. enviable growth rates compared to what we have the in u.s. what it means is it's all the more important for the u.s. to

keep up. growth isn't enough to give us the kind of recovery we've seen in the past. this isn't like 2004 and 1994. this remains the big question again. if next month we get a report back at that level, this will quickly fade into memory. if not, if we don't get back up to the levels we saw earlier this spring, the concern will grow. summer will be right around the corner and this, too, will factor on the economy. >> this is the highest we've ever seen high gasoline prices. the last time we saw over $4 was mid-2008. that was right bfrl the economy fell off a cliff and the financial crisis worse ended. it's unquestionly doing doubt especially to lower income americans. going into the summer when gas prices typically rise, the question is what is it going to be? maybe it's not $4. it could be r5.

sanford and everyone else did. we believe because we know more than we're allowed to disclose, we believe it he's all together likely he's not going to be charged. >> you're baiting it on the standard law, whether he was following him or pursuing him. but my understanding is he stopped following him at some point and was attack. if that's the case, is that a clear case of stand your ground in your view? >> i think when the facts come out, i believe they're going to show it was stand your ground at that point. >> how do you figure that out? there was an orlando newspaper pa hired its own investigators to listen to the recordings. do you know if the prosecutor is doing the same things?

we don't know. we have a group of people that did that. when you do a forensic analysis of voice, us speak right now gives you a better reliability of the voice. we had an eyewitness who said quite clearly, the guy in the red center, the red sweater, that's george, on the bomb, the guy on top pounding him. the funeral director said no injuries entree von martin. you take all these things into contact and totality, it's clear what happened. >> some claim that trayvon was face down with his arms pinned underneath him and zimmerman on top. so you've about got these conflicting accounts. >> he wound up face down. >> is there any eyewitness who

actually saw the beginning of the confrontation. >> again, at this point, the only thing we have to go on is what was released to the media. if you take the information thus far, those are the conclusions you can draw. the rest is going to have to wait until the investigation is completed and the government releases all the information we have to put those kinds of things together. >> there is this investigation but then a court of public opinion and inertial. how does that affect the wleels of justice in both of your views? >> that's a troubling thing because in the court of public opinion it appears he's ready for sentencing. it's going to be hard road. that's why we're here today, to get people to talk -- you know, see the matches and let the court system work.

get all the information, all the facts, see what happens then. >> i have to ask you, if a special prosecutor comes out and says, no legal charges are awarded. that's a legal string nor you and your client. but what happens then? >> at that point in time we can go to the court of public opinion, so much misinformation came out early on. an avalanche of one opinion was driven very hard. it's not consistent with the facts as they started to come out early. they show a five-year-old picture of a man who looked about 12 years old and mr. zimmerman in jailhouse orange. put those pictures together instead of letting everybody

lot of rain headed our way this week. near 70 inland. 63 at the coast. into the lower 70s tomorrow. there's a chance for rain once we get to sunday night and really all the way to friday. dust the umbrellas off and get ready, here we go again. thank you, anthony. we want to start you with a traffic warning on the peninsula. chp is investigating a deadly big rig accident that shut down part of interstate 280. this happened late last night at 11:00 on the 280 connector to westbound 92 in wed redwood city. the big rig accident killed one person. it has the 280 connector to eastbound 92 shut down. the ramp is expected to reopen around 6:00 this morning as crews work to clear the scene. and one of america's most popular painters died suddenly in his south bay home. thomas kinkade's family said he died yesterday in his family home of natural causes.

his wife is shocked and saddened by his death. his paintings of landscape and cottages made him a multi millionaire. his paintings are hanging in one out of every 20 homes in the country. the u.c. berkeley graduate leaves behind his wife and four daughters. a three-alarm fire led to the evacuation of an apartment fire in san jose. they started in the 3000 block of pane avenue last night at 7:00. a neighbor jumped out of a seventh-floor window and fortunately was not hurt. the cause of the fire is under investigation. if you have a nut allergy, you want to be careful what you drink. a chocolate protein monster drink is being recalled. at least four people with peanut or tree nut allergies suffered severe reactions after drinking the chocolate drink. the drinks come in 12 and 32-ounce bottles with an enjoy by date of may 23rd, 2012 or

but accidently fired a four-inch nail -- we're talking about a nail like this -- directly into his chest. dennis went into cardiac arrest numerous times and doctors were able to save his life. he was released from the hospital friday. he is joined by dr. raymond green who was part of a team who saved his life. dennis and dock, to good to have you here. dennis, you worked with nail guns a lot and have had them jam before. what went wrong this time? >> nothing any different. they jam often. but for some reason this time it was difficult -- difficult to unjam and didn't use the safety procedures i should have, and it got me. it bit me. >> it got you. it more than bit you. what did it feel like to have that four-inch nail going inside you? >> it didn't really hurt.

it was like pressure was building though. you could tell something's wrong. >> and i understand you hung onto the nail and you hung onto it. that might have saved your life. what compelled you to hold onto it and keep it in your grip? i didn't want it to move. wi us trying to hold my chest from moving in and out. i didn't want to make any more damage. it's like having a hole plugged up. leave it in there. >> i know three times you went into cardiac arrest and they had to perform cpr. dr. green, let me ask you about that. obviously you need the cpr to get his heart going again, but didn't that drive the nail in deeper? >> that is yooushlly the case. if not deeper, but the hole was made deeper. >> and it pierced, i think, the

right venn trick call. that supplies blood to the lumg. how were you able to repair it? >> we repaired it primarily using suture material just as we would do with any other planned operation. we had to divide his sternum to get there. luckily for him he had held the kneel in place and for the most part it was still in the same position. we were able to take the nail out later and remove it after repairing the breast plaplate. >> what's the prognosis for his future? >> i think within the next three to six months he'll be back on the job. >> dennis, i suggest one word for you. ham sneer yeah. that's the old-fashioned way. >> yeah. you might get a sore thumb but better than what you went through. listen, all joking aside, we're

16th before she was leaving to catch the bus. sierra never made it to school. at 10:00 this morning the 15-year-old's family will announce a reward for information in her disappearance. an unusually quiet and safe neighborhood in fremont is shaken up after a deadly shooting. and we are getting our first look at a sketch of a possible suspect. this is the man who would have been in fremont's centerville neighborhood just before 11:00 thursday night say neighbors. that's when officers responded to calls of shots fired near the intersection of central avenue and joseph street. a 20-year-old man was shot and killed outside an apartment building. investigators are not yet sure whether this killing was gang related but we know it was fremont's first homicide of the year. panning for gold? police are on a treasure hunt. they are looking for a pair of gold medallions stolen during a burglary at a home in the city's bay view district. the me dal yn medallions were a

welcome back to "today," saturday morning 7th of april, 2012. a nice crowd on the plaza waving hello to friends and family back home. thanks to them for spending part of their saturday with us. we'll go outside and say hi. i'm lester holt with tam rahall. a navy fighter jet crashes into an apartment complex in virginia. hard to believe, but no one was killed in this accident. we're live at the scene. we'll get more in a few minutes. >> susan powell, the utah mom, last seen in december 2009. her husband was a person of interest before he killed himself and their children.

now there are new revelations about her disappearance and who may have also been involved. we'll have more on that story. it's official heidi klum and seal are over. the pair seemed so close for many years but after nearly seven years of marriage the supermodel makes the official move to end their union. more on that coming up dennis rodman, like you've never seen him before. basketball's former bad boy responds to reports that he's a deadbeat dad, broke, and even sick. he also opens up about his problems with alcoholism. >> that's all coming up. we want to begin this hour in virginia where navy investigators are looking into the fiery crash of an fa-18 fighter jet that slammed into an apartment complex friday afternoon. good morning. >> reporter: lester, good morning to you. miraculously, no one was killed when the fighter jet crashed into the apartment complex and exploded into flames. the fire department's happy to report there are no missing

persons from the crash zone. as we're learning more about the crash, we're also hearing stories of heroism. a fiery crash, the navy fighter jet slammed into the apartment complex, a place where mostly seniors call home. >> an awfuling motion. >> reporter: in the charred wreckage, the signature twin tale of the f-18 hornet. >> i was baby-sitting, we heard three loud booms, and the house shook. >> reporter: witnesses reported seeing smoke and flames coming from one of the wings, and the pilot struggling to regain control. >> i looked up and i could see the plane going straight up with no sound off engines and seen i pitch over and go down. >> reporter: both pilots ejected. pat found one pilot strapped to his parachute. >> made sure he didn't have broken bones, he apologized for crashing into our complex, and i chuckled and told him don't worry about it, we're alive,

we'll get you out of here as fast as we can. >> reporter: as fire started to spread, neighbors jumped into action, instantly becoming rescuers. >> we jumped over and start bang'ing and kick in doors and one lady shut the door in my face, she was so scared, she didn't want to come out. we had to go after her and that's when the roof went. we were running out of the building as it blew up and caved in. >> reporter: four people on the ground suffered minor injuries. as for the pilots, one carried on a stretcher. the other, walked away with a police officer. now the focus shifts to the cause of the crash, the jet took off from nearby oceania naval station and spent seconds in the air, before going down. >> indications are that that aircraft suffered a catastrophic mechanical malfunction. the specifics of which i don't want to speculate on. >> reporter: a horrific scene that so far claimed no lives.

and the wreckage remains at the crash zone, which is just a few blocks from here. the investigation very much in its early stages. no word yet, lester, when the displaced can get back to their homes. lester, thank you. jim miklaszewski the chief pentagon correspondent. is what the pentagon saying this morning about the crash. the key words we heard from the navy officer in virginia, catastrophic mechanical malfunction, now in military equipment aircraft terms, that means there was either a total loss or a total breakdown of some critical system on the aircraft, or even an explosion. now we are told that some eyewitnesses, in fact, heard an explosion and saw smoke and fire coming from the plane before the crash. and as we heard from one eyewitness in the piece a moment ago, as the plane was trying to climb, there was no sound at

all, it lost power entirely. so investigators are obviously going to try to look at the cause of the catastrophic malfunction. and in the meantime, back in 2008, when there was a crash of an fa-18 in southern california that went into a housing district and killed four people the u.s. navy grounded the entire fa-18 flight for a short period of time. but as far as we know, there's no consideration of doing that in this case. >> thank you, mik. check of the morning's top stories. to the newsdesk with tom llamas. >> good morning. lawmakers in florida are taking a closer look at the stand your ground law following the death of trayvon martin. he's the unarmed teenager killed by a community watch volunteer in stanford, florida. the law allows a person to use deadly force if they think they're in danger. >> we believe, based on the evidence, it's altogether likely he's not going to be charged.

>> zimmerman's legal team continues to say martin initiated the confrontation and zimmerman fired in self-defense. a bill inspired by caylee anthony's death has been signed into law in florida. it increases the maximum penalty from a year in jail to five years in prison for knowingly making a false statement to police about a policing child. the mother, casey anthony, acquitted last year of murdering her daughter but convicted on four counts of lying to investigators. one of the three winners of the historic megamillions $656 million jackpot has come forward. kansas officials say that person doesn't want to be identified, though, which state law allows but has chok chosen to take one sum payment, that's what they're reporting. drama es indicacalated after a d mother told nbc news she mistakely misplaced her ticket.

and more than two years later he killed himself and their two young sons. now utah police are suggesting that others besides josh powell may have been involved. here's nbc's miguel almaguer. >> reporter: one of steven powell's co-workers said steven was with josh and his sons on a camping trip weeks before susan powell disappeared back in 2009. a spokesperson for steven powell's employer tells nbc news that steven powell was out on sick leave for two days after learning about susan's disappearance. in another major development, a colleague says josh once bragged at a party about knowing how to get away with murder and knowing how to dispose of a body. >> he was excited about his theory on how you can kill someone and get rid of the body. you poison them so they don't struggle and you dump them in a mine shaft. >> reporter: josh powell was never charged with a crime and

the police department was under question for not arresting him long before he had a chance to kill himself and the two boys. the police chief says there was never enough to charge him. >> we represent susan. >> reporter: earlier this week chief nilsson says there may have been others involved besides josh powell, includes his father sneechb we don't want to talk to them. they refuse to kroopt. >> reporter: he's awaiting trial envoyerism and pornography. he's pled not guilty. before his arrest, authorities checked with police in utah who told them steven had a solid alibi for the weekend susan went missing and there was no linking him to her disappearance. but could he know where she is? susan's family believes it's

possible. >> tell us where she is. it's not going to change anything or bring her back, but it would give us closure. >> reporter: closure but not piece, after losing her to a ma'am who vuld have gone through a trial for murder. >> ann, good morning. thanks for coming on with us. >> good morning, lester. >> we're beginning to see people coming forward with this information but to your knowledge is the new information or have the police heard them before? >> the police has heard of it before where steven was involved in a camping trip with josh powell and the kids. and also not mentioning that susan was missing when it was national/international news as he went back to utah to try to help josh pack to come to washington state. so it seems like everything that's new is kind of old because it's been at least related to the police in most instances. >> but let me to get you to

drill down a bit on this camping trim. former co-worker of stephen powell said the dad went with josh on a camping trip. is this the same camping trip that occurred on the night of the disappearance? >> you know, it's not exactly clear. i talked with her. she first sent me an e-mail. she believes it is the same camping trip, but the whip dough is from thanks giving of '09 and two weeks hence, one to two weeks hence. but he talked about a camping trip with the kids, marshmall marshmallows, sits around the fierks cold, et cetera, in the wintertime. >> we tried to reach out to steven powell. he did not get back to us. what's your response to the police chief saying there might have been others involved in the disappearance. others in the disappearance itself or perhaps in the cover-up? >> it could be the cover-up or the disappearance itself. like chuck said, we just want to find susan, so maybe there's

answers from steven powell. but the important thing is finding her would be the only silver lining in this horrible situation and something good has to come of this. we believe that maybe that's what it is. but if someone's involved in her disappearance, of course, it's homicide. if they're involved after the fact it would be rendering help and assistance which is a far lesser crime. >> i believe at one point in your career, you were a prosecutor. knowing the evidence now that we have seen that police had against josh powell, would you have prosecuted? >> absolutely. and i tried murder cases on less than this. i tried many murder cases when i was in the da's office here, and it's -- you know, you talk about just circumstantial evidence. circumstantial evidence is as valid as direct evidence and think it's better in a lot of was. witnesses can lie and be mistaken but evidence never lice. this is a strong case, in my

opinion. >> in this case they had blood found in the home and hand writen notes from susan. wu they don't have a body. i know the search will continue. is the new information about josh talking about a mine shaft, has that led to new avenues of a search perhaps? >> hopefully. there's new information that there's going to be searches continuing. that's the biggest help the family has. they're not going to stop looking for it, comes to us, comes to the police and comes out publicly, but she needs to be found. >> we'll have to end the conversation. thanks for getting up early and talking with us, we appreciate it. >> my pleasure. >> we're back after these messages. cuban

bay. even into the east bay at 67. 64 along the coast. so everybody gets a nice mild day today. even tomorrow there is a spot chance for a shower in the north bay tomorrow. otherwise we are dry until about monday and then it looks like rain is with us through friday. >> it looks like a nice day for an easter egg hunt. thank you very much. and we still have continuing to follow that deadly big rig accident that shut down part of interstate 280 this morning. it happened last night just before 11:00 on the 280 connector to westbound 92 in redwood city. the highway patrol says the big rig accident did kill one person. and it also has the 280 connector to eastbound 92 shut down. that ramp is expected to reopen right around 7:00 this morning as crews work to clear that scene. you can take crystal springs road to alameda to get around that in the meantime. one of america's most popular painters died suddenly in his south bay home.

thomas kinkade's family said he died at the age of 54 yesterday at his los gatos home appearing of natural causes. they are shocked and saddened of his death. his paintings made him a multimillionaire. it is estimated his paintings are in one out of every 20 homes in the country. the u.c. berkeley graduate leaves behind his wife and four daughters. a three-alarm fire led to the evacuation of an apartment in san jose in the 300 block of payne avenue last night. a neighbor jumped out of a second-floor window and was able to escape unhurt. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. well, if you have a nut allergy, be careful what you drink this morning. owallo is recalling its chocolate protein monster drinks. four people with tree or nut allergies suffering severe

get that at the whether channel. lauren scruggs accidentally walked into an airplane propiecer back in december. >> lauren's parents jeff and cheryl, opened up to us about lauren's recovery and the powerful faith that keeps them going. they say the power of easter is one that resonates with their family. >> god spared laun ed lauren's . we can go to church on easter and woreship together. she's got that same spunk and personality and same inspiring spirit. it's just going be an easter like never before. >> reporter: back in december lauren was building a career as a model and a fashion blogger on her site, logo. she went up in a plane to see christmas light in dallas by air. but when she left the plane, she walked right into the

still-spinning propeller. she lost her left eye and hand and suffered brain injuries. it's taken months of intense fiscal therapy but as these pictures show, she's moving on. >> four months ago we were praying god would spare her life and he did. then the nurse told us there's a possibility she may never put a sentence together again or not have the same personality, and, you know, god's answered those prayers. >> she's a fighter. she's concentrating pretty much on her rehabilitation at this point. she's healing and god's really carrying her through it. but she has a lot of strength. she has a lot of courage and tons of determination. >> yes. >> yeah. >> reporter: jeff and cheryl stayed strong through their own faith and the help of friends both new and old who connected with them on their care and bridge website. >> i didn't cook for ten weeks. it was amazing. >> they took care of everything for us, took care of our house,

nba champion and was part of the bulls. he was as an tick off the kofrmt he wore a wedding dress to promote his auto biography and he never wore a tattoo and earring that he didn't like. now he's here to address allegations that he's broke and hasn't paid child support. i sat down with him and his attorney for an exclusive tell-all interview. it's a pretty bad headline to have to wake up to to say you owe 800,000 dollars in child support. they call men like that deadbeat dads. >> i've been called worseful i've made a statement that, you know, i wish i was a better dad. i have one regret. i wish i was a better father. i wanted to be there for the kids every day. i'm not a deadbeat dad at all. >> do you pay child support? >> yeah, i pay child support. >> that wasn't the headline last

week. the court says he owes $800,000 in spousal support and child support. >> that was not based on his actual income. >> willis says it's been sharply reduced and he's meeting his obligations but in a written report she says he's broke and unable to pay. >> are you broke? >> no, i'm not broke at all. i'm not michael jordan. i made some money in the nba, but, broke, no, i'm not broke. >> part and parcel with all your legal problems people around you say you're sick, that you're not well and they talk specifically about your struggles with alcohol. how are you doing on that? >> i'm not sick. people have those allegations of me since 1995, you know. dennis parties a lot, dennis does this. i'm going do what i do.

this is the wild side of me. >> beyond all the shock, one gets the sense that above all rodman is a shrewd businessman who took the bad boy moniker he earned as a detroit piston and ran with it. what he accomplished on the court was a championship bowl and four other teams is undeniable. >> last summer in the hall of fame, was that vindication for you? >> i don't think it was vindication. to me it didn't matter. i know my career was good for a lot of people. like i said, the reason i got emotional was because overmy kids. my kids never seen me play. that's been the case for them. the fact is i'm dry, clean, doing all this. but is your dad in the hall of fame? is your dad one of the best players ever to play the game of basketball? most of these kids can't say that. my kids are going to say that.

okay? but we want to talk to you about the apple. >> you're going to take your peal and tossed apple. put them in lemon water so they don't turn colors. take the apple and put them in a sauteed pan. sugar and sin m cinnamon. don't overheat. you're going to take a spoonful of apples, put them in the corner, fold over and fold over. >> and top it with the m moscapone. >> that's a side dish? >> it's easter. >> wonderful. >> as we continue down the assembly line, we're doing french toast but a little different. what do we have french toast

sandwiches? >> yes. >> okay. how do we start? >> we start by taking a piece of this bread which is similar to white bread. spread nutella. >> it's a very difficult task, as you can see. >> so nutella plus chocolate? >> yes. >> okay. i like where this is going. >> what are you adding. >> a hershey sandwich. take it away. >> now we take our sandwich, we dip it in our egg batter that has egg, cinnamon, heavy cream and a little bit of nutmeg and we place it in our sauteed skillet, nonstick, with a nice amount of butter. it takes about three minutes on each side. it cooks nicely, the chocolate melts, and it gets oohey and gooey. once it's finished we top it off with a chestnut syrup, which is
