plus a taxi driver choked and a man held at gunpoint. two brazen robberies in one south bay neighborhood. and a live look at the bay bridge split up on this early monday morning, april 9th. this is "today in the bay." good morning, everybody. 5:00. >> good morning, everybody. we check in with christina loren to check in what's happening on a monday morning. getting our week started right. >> getting our week started right. a lot of kids off for spring break and you'll want to get them outdoors today. as we head through the next few days, rain in the forecast. enough rain to where your opportunity is to get outside are going to be limited over the next few days. enjoy the moment while it lasts. 46 degrees right now in oakland. we're going to see a pretty comfortable afternoon with temperatures climbing into the 70s. i will time out the potent storm system tracking towards the bay area. how much rain we're expecting and when it's expected to hit, as well. let's check your drive at 5:00

a.m. with mike. >> we'll start in the north bay where those might be the first to be affected by anything you're going to report coming up. 101 is not a problem as you're traveling southbound around the curve. a very light flow. novato, looks like they moved the camera a tad bit to the left. the roadway is clear from what i understand. watch this, folks, we'll see how things continue. they're going to move the cones any second now for the morning commute. >> thank you very much. 5:01 in the east bay this morning. investigators are looking into the tragic death of a father skand daughter killed on a saturday bike ride. live in concord with the latest. stephanie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. investigators are looking at everything from possible speeding to possible cell phone use in trying to determine what caused this teen driver, 17 years old to lose control of his

suv and crash into the father and daughter here on the sidewalk along treat boulevard. as you can see where the memorial continues to grow. family members, friends, strangers even came to pay their respects to remember nuri and his 9-year-old daughter. police say they were on their bicycles with their helmets on when the teen driver jumped the curb, rammed into a fire hydrant before hitting them both. >> you know, i have two sons and a daughter. we've ridden down the same street on our bikes and i just -- i feel like it could have been any of us. >> reporter: it could be days before we learn the official cause of that accident. witnesses reporting seeing the driver speed. investigators are looking into phone records to see if that 17-year-old was on his cell phone at that time. it's also standard to perform toxicology tests to rule out alcohol and/or drugs. the 12-year-old daughter of nuri was also here, but she survived

with minor injuries. as for that 17-year-old, he's in juvenile hall facing charges of manslaughter. live in concord this morning, "today in the bay." this morning, we have new information about a bicyclist who may have been riding recklessly before plowing into an elderly man in san francisco. witnesses now telling police he ran red lights and stop signs before finally slamming into the 71-year-old man 11 days ago. that man, unfortunately, later died from his injuries. buchari says he was approaching the intersection and the light turned red and he couldn't stop so he plowed through the crosswalk. he could face manslaughter charges. several people are recovering from injuries after a dangerous day for drivers along san francisco's embarcadero. just blocks away and a few minutes apart. one driver suffered minor injuries when police say he made an illegal turn near harrison street and was hit by a muni

car. five people were hurt when the driver slammed into several cars near branan street. this morning, a south bay neighborhood on edge after two bold robberies minutes apart on the very same street. at this point, gilroy police don't believe the crimes are connected because they were carried out so differently. the first attack happened on saturday night on a street called independent order of odd fellows avenue. police say two men got in the back of a taxi and demanded money. they punched the driver and then got away with cash. just five minutes later in the same spot, investigators say somebody robbed another man at knife point. >> i think we need a little more just because you know they come more often. i don't know because yeah -- that's really scary. two robberies within five minutes? that's scary.

>> so far, officers have not made any arrests in either case. this morning an apology from the oakland police department after admitting it was too busy to answer all of its calls over the weekend. despite being fully staffed friday night, opd says it could not meet the public demand. by 6:30 that evening the department had 125 unanswered calls for service. with officers already working on 17 priority calls, by 8:30, a total of 146 calls were standing. the department says if you have a non-emergency request, you should make a request online, go to oaklandnet.com and search police reports. then click on citizens online reporting system. harsh and unjust. that's what some are calling the charges filed against 13 occupy call protesters and now they're demanding the district attorney drop those charges. supporters of the group called the sprow 13.

it's exactly five months since police used batons to break up a protest in that very spot. rally organizers say the protesters right now facing charges for just linking arms in front of the encampment. they were not arrested that day and claim many were severely beaten by police. 5:06. soon it could get tougher to find a spot to light up in one south bay city. "today in the bay" live from san jose with an update on the city's latest smoking ban proposal. maryann, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. well, san jose already has a smoking ban on the books. it affects public restaurants like here in san jose. another public building. but this new proposed ordinance would be much more restrictive. specifically it would ban smoking in outdoor dining areas, including any privately or publicly owned areas such as sidewalk cafes. it would prevent you from lighting up in service lines. so if you're waiting for the atm

machine or concert tickets, you would not be able to smoke. apartments, condos, and mobile home parks. but it does require landlords to set aside some outdoor space as a designated area. some landlords have expressed concern about this and tobacco retailers have voiced opposition to this vote. tomorrow night the city council will decide on this ordinance. reporting live in san jose, back to you guys. >> thank you very much. 5:07 right now. time to check back in with christina loren right now in the nbc bay area weather center. tell us what's happening today and beyond. >> seize the day, seize the day. a lot of rain on the way. as of 24 hours away, heavy downpours for your morning commute tomorrow. this morning, we don't have a all that much fog to report. there's a little bit of patchy fog drifting around, especially

as you get through the half-moon bay area crossing 92, 280, make sure you keep that in mind. overall, though, mostly clear in the south bay, we'll see a lot of sunshine right off the bat. temperatures will be the warmest in the south bay in the 70s. all works out like this inland. 63 degrees by noon, 56 by the bay, a really comfortable day today. we're talking about temperatures only ending up in the 50s as we head through the second half of the week. so like i keep pointing out, if you've got those kids at home with you today, might be a great day to get them outdoors. i'll have your beach forecast for monday coming up. 5:00 a.m. tuesday, you can see that yellow embedded within that deep green, that's light to moderate rain coming down as you make your way to work tomorrow. i'll continue to time out this system. another one right on its heels. how much rain we're expecting this week. and my next report first. let's check your drive on monday with mike. >> well, we're back to normal for this back to work monday for the dublin interchange.

at 680, the accident, well, looked like it was clearing up, completely cleared off of our sensors. no slowing there at the interchange, but we have a little build westbound 580 out of the pass, there's a 15-minute drive. speeds are just fine toward that 680/580 interchange. we'll get a look at the other side of the bay. san mateo, 92 moving smoothly, a little blip, but no incidents reported there. 280 at 92. maybe fog over there between san mateo and half-moon bay and highway 1 at pigeon point. we'll watch for any updates. live look out there shows what things are like across the bay. the bay bridge moving smoothly. camera shaking a tad bit. no advisories for your crossing. just a smooth drive, guys. back to you. >> thank you very much. well, closing state parks may not be saving as much as first thought. many con stain historical items

that need to be kept in storage. at this point, it does not know how much of the projected $22 million in savings will be lost. 17 parks were slated to close by july 1st. that was the deadline, but 11 have been spared by partners. two dozen are still in negotiation. well, lounging in the shady spot at an east bay pool will cost you this year. parents who want to guarantee use of the shady spots say that the martinez city pool will have to pay up beginning this year. the city council has decided to charge up to $260 to use one of the coveted five shelter areas. parents last year were lining up before it opened to land one of those spots. the pool opens to the public on june 2nd. >> v.i.p. areas at the pool. it's 5:10 right now. coming up. keeping your next car from being a junker. the no lemon law working through the state capitol.

from the third largest season on record to, you know, kind of a dry season. >> right now businesses are trying to lure skiers and snowboa snowboarders back to the slopes. offering free lessons or deeply discounted equipment rentals. that ought to get people there. >> i like the sound of free. >> meteorologist christina loren, it's a free forecast but always priceless. >> very nice, thank you for that. and you know what the good news is? you get free fresh powder. we've got a lot of snow on the way to the sierra nevada. now, here is the caveat you'll have to deal with. we're going to see that snow above 7,000 feet. the first system, we've got two systems on the way to the bay this week. the first is a warm system, the second system, once that rides through thursday into friday, we might see the snowevels down to about 5,000 feet. after all, we are now well into april. so we are typically seeing temperatures a little bit warmer

this time of year as a result of those systems coming in from the pacific are warmer when your snow levels are elevated. area of low pressure still offshore. it's going to start to move as we head throughout the day today. that will increase your cloud cover areas north of the golden gate bridge. i want to emphasize that by highlighting in green. san jose, you'll likely stay mostly sunny for the first part of the day, but that will not last long. we stopped the clock on your future cast. 5:00 a.m. tuesday, we'll meet back here, mike and i will be helping you navigate through heavy downpours on your way to work. and plan on giving yourself extra time. by 11:00 a.m. tomorrow, starting to get a bit of a break. that pattern of steady rain will start to break apart. spotty showers throughout the day, 3:00 a.m. wednesday, another round of rain comes through, little bit of a break for wednesday afternoon. then thursday our next colder system arrives. and take a look a what we're expecting in terms of temperatures. today, your temperatures will be in the 70s. as we head through the colder

system, only talking about 56 degrees on friday. you'll be pulling out that winter coat as we head to the second half of the week. showers for the first part of the weekend, but you can make those outdoor plans on sunday. making for quiet weather as we round out your weekend. let's check out what we're doing on the roads with our own mike. >> dealing with the fact it's monday, we're showing a nice, smooth drive. we had an earlier accident from what i understand, all lanes should be cleared now. right here, highway 87 northbound we're starting to see speeds down towards 50. that's a little early, but capital is one of the first to show the signs of backup. we're looking over here, no problem, lower bay shore, 280, the peninsula drive, patch or two of fog, half-moon bay, san mateo hills, the dumbarton bridge moves smoothly. a live look and see how things are shaping up coming off the

peninsula. eastbound off the peninsula side with the headlights, both directions, nice flow of traffic. over to hayward traveling eastbound, we'll get a look at the maps again and a smooth transition off of 880. no delays at 580, but there's slowing through livermore now, speeds down in the 50s at times, at times over the altamont pass and the approach to the bay bridge with no problems, no delays over the bay. back to you. >> thanks. it is 5:17 now. the broadcasting world bids farewell to a television giant, long time 60 minutes correspondent mike wallace passed away this weekend. >> you haven't answered the question, mr. president. >> i have no intention of leaving until you l tell me what's on your mind. >> his unflinching interviewing style made him famous. even after leaving 60 minutes in 2006, wallace continued to land big interviews for the program. he told the late tim russert he

wanted to be remembered with three words. >> how should we remember you? >> tough but fair. >> tough but fair. amen. >> wallace passed away on saturday. he was 93. >> what a monumental career there. well, the markets taking throe days off for the holiday weekend. which means today is the very first day we'll see real action from friday's disappointing jobs report. for that and the rest of the news before the bell, let's check in with brian shactman. good morning, brian. >> good morning, and it won't be pretty if we were to open right now, the dow jones industrial average would be down about 140 points, one of the biggest losses in several months. you're right, the first reaction to friday's jobs report, half of what was created in february. the unemployment rate did dip to 8.2%, went down .1%. but a lot of people say that's due to people leaving the workforce because they're so disappointed with the job search

in terms of without them. asian markets lower overnight, europe is closed for their easter holiday, no economic data of note today, but this week we do get reports of import prices, inflation, and consumer sentiment. the dow fell 13 points, opens up at 13,060, the nasdaq was up on thursday, at 3,080. sony plans to cut 6% of the global workforce by the end of the year. also several executives are being asked to return, that's right, return their annual bonuses. that doesn't happen often. sony under pressure to return to profitability after four years of losses. demand that has dropped for the consumer electronic products. also, prices at the pump edging up again. regular unleaded up 4 cents in the past two weeks to a national average of $3.96. it's 4:35 in san francisco, 4.25 in san jose. the rate of increase has slowed.

this is up 4 cents, but we want it to go down, not go up at a slower rate. >> well said, brian, i'm with you on that. and keeping on that gas theme. a natural gas boom forcing companies to slow production down. so much gas has been stockpiled underground salt caverns and other storage areas are rapidly filling up. the unusually warm winter and decreased demand all part of this surplus. businesses and homeowners right now benefitting from prices for natural gas now at a ten-year low. well, a new proposal could soon protect californians from potentially dangerous used cars. the used cars safety act would provide a more detailed history of pre-owned automobiles. it would also include a complete record of any damage or maintenance done. current federal laws only track the vehicle's title. a vote is scheduled for tomorrow. well, how is this for a cool opportunity? today's your chance to have 49ers' tight end vernon davis become your personal valet. davis will be at union square in

welcome back, everybody on this monday morning. this morning, construction crews say cal's new memorial stadium will be better and safer than ever before. and guess what? it's going to be done on time. memorial stadium will be finished by the team's september 21st football opener against nevada. right now the stadium is undergoing a $321 million renovation and seismic retrofit makeover. the stadium will seat 63,000 fans. cal if you didn't know has been playing home games this past year while crews worked on the new stadium. well, bay area baseball fan who grew up at ballparks nationwide is having her say in the "new york times." emily miller, daughter of john

miller typed up her childhood memories for the paper this weekend. john miller, of course, the voice of the giants on knbr radio and right here on nbc bay area. miller was also the commentator for espn sunday night baseball for more than 20 years. in the article, emily says she and her sister used to listen to the games on the radio so their father's soothing voice would help them get to sleep. >> how very sweet. well, turns out the new ceo of ibm was at the masters after all. she was wearing a pink jacket, but not a green one. here's the ibm ceo sitting in a lawn chair a few rows behind at the 18th green. she brought the exclusive membership process to the forefront during the past few weeks. augusta historically an all men's club, but also historically offers memberships to ibm's chief executive. no word yet on whether she was granted a membership. augusta says those decisions are kept private. as for the tournament itself, the man's name is bubba.

and daughter were killed during a morning bike ride. investigators are working to piece together what led to this deadly crash. good morning, stephanie. >> reporter: john, good morning. this early into an investigation, police aren't ruling anything out. they will be looking into everything from possible speeding to cell phone use to determine what caused a 17-year-old driver to lose control of this suv and hit a father and his young daughter on a bike ride saturday morning. the memorial grows for the 41-year-old man and his 9-year-old daughter. they gathered here for a candle light vigil to pay their respects to nuri and his young daughter hadessa. police say they were riding their bicycles with their helmets on when the young driver crashed into a fire hydrant and then hitting and killing them both. >> perfect family. everybody dreams of a family like that and she had it. she had that perfect family, perfect daughters, perfect husband.

"today in the bay." 5:32 now. a disturbing discovery in san francisco's sunset neighborhood. police are investigating racial graffiti on several homes near 23rd avenue in lincoln way. it was first spotted yesterday morning. police say the homes were vandalized and spray painted with offensive words. neighbors say they're sick and tired of drunken debalkry.

neighbors say the real problem is on polk between suter and gearry. bar owners say they do their bettes to control those crowds but also point out their bars have transformed a once blighted area into a booming one. police get plenty of calls in that area, but so far, nothing unusual. there's an infusion of money to remove lead from homes in richmond. recently awarded a $2.5 million federal grant to tackle the problem. concentrated in central richmond's iron triangle and north richmond. it should pay for work on at least 200 homes. exposure to lead can impair learning and cognitive development in small children. it is 5:33 right now. it could get tougher to find a spot to light up in the south bay.

maryann favro live from san jose with more on the city's proposed smoking ban. good morning, maryann. >> reporter: good morning, john. san jose already has a smoking ordinance on the book. it bans smoking at restaurants like here at mini gourmet and other public buildings, but this new ordinance is going to be a lot tougher to approve. it would ban smoking in outdoor dining areas, including any privately or publicly owned areas such as sidewalk cafes. it would prevent you from lighting up in service lines. for example, if you're waiting for the atm machine or waiting to get concert tickets. and it would prevent smoking in outdoor common areas at apartment and condos and mobile home parks. but it does require landlords to set aside some outdoor space as a designated smoking area. some residents we talked to this morning say it's just too restrictive. >> i think it's pretty harsh just the fact that i mean there's a lot of people that have smoked. it's very addictive.

they have trouble kicking the habit. and to have them stop, frankly anywhere, like you said in line, atm lines, parks, in front of a restaurant. where can they go? >> reporter: some tobacco retailers say they're opposed to this ordnance and some landlords express concern because they're not sure they'll be able to provide those designated areas where people can actually smoke. breathe california is definitely in favor of these changes. and the city council will make a decision tomorrow. reporting live in san jose, back to you guys. >> okay, maryann, thanks. 5:35. that new health study is revealing there could be a possible link between autism and their mother's weight during pregnancy. doctors at uc davis say women who are obese during pregnancy are 60% more likely to have a child born with autism. having type ii diabetes, which is often linked to obesity also

increases the risk. the study found an increase in insulin could affect the oxygen supply to her baby's brain. >> planning a pregnancy, you might think about losing weight and getting your exercise routine in order and making sure you're controlling your blood sugar. >> the study also found children born without autism from obese or diabetic mothers had problem-solving and language issues. it is 5:36 right now, we check back in with christina loren to find out cool start to the day. how is it looking the rest of the day? >> looking pretty good. you'll want to look at that day through your sunglasses for the first part, at least. clouds increasing throughout the second half of the day and temperatures starting out so mild. we are still expecting those 70-degree readings later on in places like san jose. 46 right now, though, you might want to grab a light jacket or sweater as you make your way out that front door this morning. as we head throughout the day today, temperatures staying nice and mild, high pressure still in

control. but a cold front is moving through. that's going to bring us pretty significant rainfall. we are less than 24 hours away from heavy downpours developing across the bay area. i will time that out hour-by-hour to your doorstep coming up in my next report along with that seven-day forecast. we p want to get you out that front door right on time. >> we're looking at highway 4 and right on time for the typical slowdown. maybe not as heavy as we typically see on a monday, but it's still down to 30 miles per hour at the "l" street sensor. over towards "l" street to summerville. this is a typical spot. overnight closures in the same area, overnight midnight to 3:00 for the next few nights. just a warning for folks. the bay bridge and the approach. coming across the bay you can see an increase in the volume of traffic. and the camera's shaking a bit from our san francisco mounted camera, as well. that's just a tremble. your breezes are an issue, but

virginia will be able to receive compensation today. they'll get initial payments of $2,300 for individuals. they'll get more for families there. the f-18 jet crashed right into an apartment complex on friday. dozens of units were destroyed but somehow miraculously there were no fatalities. apparently the two pilots self-ejected themselves, as well. 5:43. as trayvon martin's family decides to sue over the death, they may not sue the man who pulled the trigger, instead the homeowners' association where the shooting happened. legal expert says exhibits "a" is evidence. zimmerman has admitted to shooting and killing the 17-year-old during a confrontation in february. but zimmerman insists he did it in self-defense, though martin was not armed. meantime, in oklahoma, two men are now under arrest in the

communication satellite in the coming days. included views of the satellite and the three-stage rocket. north korea says the satellite is strictly for scientific purposes. but u.s. officials believe it's a cover for an intercontinental ballistic missile. and this morning, syrian forces firing across the border at protesters at a refugee camp in turkey wounding a turkish translator and two syrian refugees. the regime has been stepping up shelling attacks in recent days killing dozens of civilians. tomorrow a cease-fire agreement is set to go in effect that requires troops to pull out of some of the cities. the peruvian government is asking for help in freeing trapped miners calling on mining companies to bring heavy equipment and experts to free the men who have been trapped for four days. rescuers were able to communicate and provide aid to the miners. but it's been slow going with more than two dozen feet of collapsed earth. a blast set by the miners last

firefighters there battling a five-alarm fire at the factory broke out before 3:30 eastern time this morning. that factory apparently has been abandoned for years now. unfortunately during this blaze, two firefighters died in the line of duty trying to put this thing out. more than 300 people are currently without power there. we'll keep you posted on this one now. take a look at this, more massive flames in glendale after a tanker truck was hit from behind by a honda sedan. it took two water-dropping helicopters and 150 firefighters more than an hour to put this thing out. both drivers somehow managed to scramble to safety, but the honda driver is now under arrest under suspicion of drunk driving. the crash happened saturday night, but it took until last night to finally reopen all of those lanes. 5:54 now. san francisco children may not get a free ride on muni after all. the plan to provide free passes for some or all of the city's

youths could be derailed by the agency that was supposed to fund it. directors for muni say they will approve the free passes for at least low-income children only if the metropolitan transportation commission provides $5 million in funding. several members say they are skeptical of using regional money for a project that would only benefit san francisco. this morning construction underway to make the dam more stable when the next big one hits. starting today calaveras road will be closed to the alameda county line. the road will be closed weekdays only through june 8th. and in san francisco, the northbound side of lefty o'doul bridge will be shut down near at&t park. crews shutting it down to prepare for the giants home opener. crews will be applying anti-skid coating to that bridge and the project will wrap up by 9:00 friday morning. a major airline is departing

the airport for good. united airlines pulling out of the airport on june 4th. united only serves about 1.5% of the airport's passengers with 11 weekly flights to denver. a united spokeswoman says that's not enough to maintain service there. travelers booked on flights between oakland and denver will be offered other united flights or a refund. it is 5:56 right now. wi-fi topping the list of must haves. guests would rather have free wi-fi than the high-end coffee makers and workout equipment. out of the 415 guests polled, 38% said free wi-fi is a must, 31% say they want it to become a standard amenity. by the way, 14% of guests admit to actually stealing towels or linens. come on, now. only if they're really plush. 66% say they have never swiped anything from rooms. i think they're stretching it. 5:56.
