we're less than 24 hours away now from steady rain over the greater bay area. so let's tell you what's happening out there right now. temps in the 40s and 50s. i stopped the clock on your future cast for rain. when we meet back here tomorrow morning, heavy downpours across the greater bay area. we'll time the system out. when you might be able to get outdoors. i want to check your drive at 6:01 with mike. >> the opposite of rain, we had a fire report, a car fire eastbound 580 around 14th, park boulevard. sounds like it is mostly a little bit of an engine fire. but we don't see any slowing on our sensors either. this will be a distraction away from the maze. no lanes currently reported blocked. an earlier accident has moved completely off the roadway to the shoulder. southbound 680 at the walnut creek interchange, westbound 24 moving smoothly, as well. a wider look at your commute coming up. this morning, an east bay community mourning the deaths of

a father and his young daughter killed during a saturday morning bike ride. "today in the bay's" stephanie troung is live with the story. good morning, stephanie. >> reporter: good morning, john. was the driver speeding? was he on his cell phone? just a couple of questions investigators will continue to look into this morning. they try to figure out how a 17-year-old driver lost control of his suv crashing into a father and a daughter riding their bicycles here along treat boulevard where you see the memorial grows. 200 people gathered here last night to pay their respects remembering 41-year-old nuri of concord and his 9-year-old daughter. police say they were on their bicycles with their helmets on when the teen driver jumped the curb, rammed into a hydrant before hitting and killing them both. >> on good friday i was cooking in the backyard and was having a conversation with all four of them.

next morning they're gone, two of them. so how do you get your head around that? >> reporter: a lot of questions, of course. now, it could be days before we learn the official cause from investigators. witnesses reported seeing the driver speed. police also looking into phone records to see if the 17-year-old was on his cell phone at the time. it is also standard to perform toxicology tests to rule out alcohol and/or drugs. a bit of good news in this is that nuri's 12-year-old daughter was also with him but survived with only minor injuries. as for that teen driver, he is in juvenile hall and facing charges of manslaughter. live in concord this morning, "today in the bay." 6:03 now this morning, new information about a bicyclist who may have been riding recklessly before plowing into an elderly man in san francisco. witnesses are now telling police chris buchari ran several red lights and stoplights before slamming into the 71-year-old

man 11 days ago. the man later died from his injuries. he says he was approaching the intersection at castro and market when the light turned red. and he couldn't stop, so he plowed through the crowded crosswalk. he could face manslaughter charges. also this morning, six people right now recovering from injuries after two unrelated accidents along san francisco's embarcadero. one driver suffered minor injuries when police say he made an illegal turn near harrison street and was then hit by a muni car. and also five people were hit when a driver slammed into several cars near brannan street. harsh and unjust, what some are calling the charges filed against 13 occupy cal protesters. they're demanding the district attorney drop those charges. supporters of the group dubbed the sproul 13 plan to rally in front of if sproul hall today. it is exactly 5 months since

police broke up the protest in that very spot. organizers say the protesters were arrested and in some cases beaten by police for simply linking arms to hold on to the encampment. well, this morning, a south bay neighborhood on edge after two bold robberies just minutes apart on the same street. at this point, gilroy police do not believe the crimes were connected because they were koird out so differently. the first happened after 1:30 saturday night on a street called independent order of odd fellows avenue. police say two men got into the back of a taxi and demanded money, punched the driver, tried to choke him from behind and got away with cash. five minutes later virtually the same spot, investigators say somebody robbed another man at knife point. >> police officers during the night. but i think by need a little bit more just that they come more often. i don't know because yeah. it was scary.

two robberies in less than five minutes? that's just scary. >> so far, officers have not made any arrests in either case. just about 6:06 now. smokers could be squeezed out of more places if one south bay city approves a new proposal. "today in the bay" joins us live from san jose with the latest smoking ban up for a vote. maryann, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, marla. well, right now in san jose, you cannot smoke inside in a restaurant. but if this new ordinance passes, you won't be able to smoke in a restaurant patio either. the proposed ban also includes outdoor dining areas such as sidewalk cafes. it would prevent you from lighting up while waiting in lines and it would ban smoking in outdoor common areas at apartments, condos, and mobile homes. >> i'm conflicted. i know it affects people's health, but then so do a lot of things, you know.

there's pollution, there's car exhaust. >> reporter: the idea for the ordinance came about when the centers for disease control and prevention gave grant funds to santa clara county for programs dealing with tobacco prevention and control. the city council will decide on this new ban coming up tomorrow. reporting live in san jose, maryann favro, "today in the bay." closing state parks might not be saving quite as much as first thought. many parks house thousands of historical items that need to be packed up and held in storage. the parks and recreation says they don't know how much of the projected $22 million in savings will be lost. 70 parks were slated to close by july 1st, that was the deadline. 11 sites have since signed up with partnerships to remain open. another two dozen are right now still in negotiations. spring skiing is looking much better than the winter ski season. tahoe resorts are reporting some

20 feet of snow falling in the last month alone. and now resorts say they need more than just light crowds to make up for a winter that struggled to get started. >> i mean last year we went from the third largest season on record to, you know, kind of a dry season. >> right now, businesses are trying to lure skiers and snowboarders back to the slopes. sugar bowl is offering free lessons and free or deeply discounted equipment rentals. well, time now for another check on weather. meteorologist christina loren is here to tell us about a decent day today, rest of the week, get the umbrella back out. >> and keep it handy. you'll want to keep it in your trunk all week long. today, though, great for the beach if you have those little ones at home with you for spring break. might be your only good beach day throughout this workweek. we're talking about a rainy pattern that develops as we wake up tomorrow morning over the greater bay area. and maintains all the way through saturday.

so keep that in mind. 39 degrees right now in livermore. it's cold out there, 45 in san jose. some cities are still close to 30 degrees. san francisco, you're at 49, we're about 30 minutes away from the official sunrise, 6:42. a nice sunrise over the bay area because we've got a nice mix of sun and clouds to wake up with this morning. that makes for a pretty sunrise, up to 63 degrees at noon inland. and it all works out like this when it comes to the rain showers we're expecting. north bay showers possible this afternoon. more like tonight for the peninsula and the east bay. and we're going to have to wait until tomorrow morning in the south bay. but we are talking about pretty substantial rainfall totals. we've got two systems on the way. from the first system, maybe 1/2 inch up in places like napa looking more like an inch or many in santa rosa. and another system right on its heels. so overall, possibly picking up 2 inches of rain in some south bay cities before all is said and done. i'll time out both systems for you. right now, we want to check your

drive with mike. >> christina. hey, folks, we have a new accident for the south bay. we're going to update you for northbound 101 as you're approaching oakland. another 20 minutes or so for the volume to cause any slowing. though this might kick it off, northbound 101 at oakland road. sounds like the accident has no injuries reported and it should move smoothly quickly from the roadway. another accident here just north of that 680/580 interchange. sounds like it's out of lanes at eastbound 580 and it shouldn't be any cause for the slowing on the approach westbound that's a typical build coming out of dublin and pleasanton. and we have a build here for a 19-minute drive out of the pass, speeds into the 50s and 40s everywhere you see that yellow. even the red blip showing up at greenville, that's early for the altamont pass, but looks like a typical pattern there, guys. back to you. >> thanks. it is 6:10 right now. still coming on "today in the bay," the man accused of killing

a live look at the bay bridge right now. a very picturesque spot. the colors sparkling with the lights in the water. christina loren says enjoy today, going to be a nice one, but be ready for rain in the coming week. it is 6:13. well, new this morning, two firefighters are dead, killed while fighting a massive warehouse fire outside philadelphia. the fire began about 3:00 a.m. eastern time. the town of kensington. two other firefighters are injured. flames trap them inside this furniture warehouse. take a look at this blaze.

embers landed on nearby buildings and homes sparking even more fires. well, this morning, south korean intelligence officials say north korea is digging a new tunnel, possibly in preparation for a nuke test. this is a group of foreign journalists. this as a group of foreign journalists, including nbc's richard engel gets a rare look at that site where they plan to launch a communication satellite in the coming days. the tour includes views of the satellite in the three-stage rocket. north korea says it's strictly for scientific purposes. but u.s. officials believe it's only a cover for an intercontinental ballistic missile. in the meantime, thousands of people gathering in the north korean capital to see a new giant portrait of late leader kim jong-il. the portrait sits alongside a painting of his father kim il-sung. work to install it began after his death in december. tens of thousands of citizens attended this cheering and waving colorful plastic flowers.

a large new statue of kim jong-il is expected to be unveiled some time this week. republican presidential candidate newt gingrich says he's down, but not out. today gingrich is saying that running for president was much harder than he thought. still, he's not dropping out yet. gingrich is more than $4 million in debt and running on the shoe string budget. he calls mitt romney the most likely gop nominee and says if he secures the nomination, he will campaign for him. it is 6:15 right now and appears that mother nature, ms. loren is going to take it easy on us today and going to start dumping later in the week. >> that's good news if you don't want to wash your car or water the flowers or get any of that gardening done. the good news is as we head through the second half of your weekend, sunday, ideal for gardening because your grounds will be nice and saturated. this is what we're looking at for today. temperatures starting out nice

and mild and some cities close to 50 degrees in san francisco right now. as a result, easily climbing an additional 15 degrees once the sun comes out at 6:42. that means we're talking about the 70s inland and mid to upper 60s by the bay. i want to show this to you. take a look at what developed over the course of the weekend. you see that counterclock wise rotation, a strong area of low pressure, especially this late in the season. this is going to dump rain especially over the north bay, places north of the golden gate bridge. starting in the north bay, spreading to the south through tomorrow morning. breezy conditions, as well, this is not a wind event. i think it's going to be more of a rain event, potentially flooding is possible. we stop the clock at 2:00 a.m. for tuesday, yeah, light showers starting to move along the coastline. we continue at 6:00 a.m., heavier downpours back here tomorrow, especially through the east bay, we'll get you through those, mike and i will be here early tomorrow morning to guide you through the showers. by noon, a little bit of a

break. might be able to get outdoors at noon to 4:00 tomorrow, then the rain returns late tuesday night into wednesday morning. and then thursday, our next potent system comes through. this one's colder. we're expected to end up in the 70s today back to the mid-50s. much cooler than average for this time of year. 59 degrees wednesday, 58 thursday, that means you really want to enjoy those 70s if you've got those kids at home with you this monday. let's check your drive with mike. >> all right. we'll look over here to the south bay where we are looking at northbound 101, oakland road, the accident here is out of lanes. it looks like no injuries reported. we do have a couple of cars. might take a little while to clear them off the roadway. they might be a distraction as you see the volume start to build right here, northbound 87. that could be because of the volume building, which we expect from capital to kertner.

a new accident reported on the southbound side at 680 right around the truck scales in fremont. but no major slowing there. we do have some slowing approaching that 580 interchange. typical commute build and northbound 680 at eastbound and 580 there the accident has completely cleared from the roadway, or at least out of lanes. there may be a distraction for another few minutes there. a look over to the earlier accident, walnut creek interchange here, we have the accident at the shoulder, approaching 24, likely a distraction and the build, volume of traffic here coming out of concord in toward walnut creek. highway 24 through the caldecott, that's a nice, easy drive, eastbound 580. an earlier car fire on the incident. and that may be a distraction for folks heading away from the amaze. but your commute is moving smoothly. a live look and show you the volume of traffic past the oakland coliseum. northbound 880, there's your commute direction past high street. a smooth drive, no incidents for

the nimits -- 6:18, the two oklahoma men suspected in the shooting rampage make their first court appearance today. 19-year-old jake england and 33-year-old alvin watts are charged for the shootings that killed three men and wounded two more. police are still looking for a motive and they are examining england's facebook page where he made a racist comment on the second anniversary of his father's death a day before friday's shootings. his father was killed by a black man. a florida grand jury could take up the trayvon martin shooting case some time tomorrow. a special prosecutor will decide this week if charges should be brought against 28-year-old george zimmerman. the man who shot and killed martin who was unarmed at the time in february. prosecutors right now working to determine if there's enough evidence to charge zimmerman. well, all lanes of a freeway

in glendale are back open this morning after a massive tanker fire. we do have a look at what it looked like. take a look at this saturday on highway 24 in glendale after a tanker truck was hit from behind by a honda sedan. it took two water-dropping helicopters and some 150 firefighters more than an hour to put out those flames. both drivers managed to scramble to safety, but the honda driver is now under arrest on suspicion of drunk driving. the freeway just reopened late last night. to baseball now, the giants in denver today looking for their first win of the entire season. just a few games in. not too bad. today's game against the rockies starts at 1:10. zito will be on the mound. matt cain pitching for the first time since the contract. that lead quickly slipped away. the diamondbacks come back with a furious rally winning it 7-6 and they end up sweeping that series. well, the a's will be back

on the field at the coliseum today after getting easter sunday off. they host the royals starting at 7:05 tonight. as for hockey, the sharks first round playoff schedule is set. they play the st. louis blues on thursday. the park drops at 4:30 p.m. our time. the sharks won't enjoy home ice until game three next monday. well, the time now is 6:21. coming up on "today in the bay," for the first time, a study finds a link between a mother's obesity and autism in children. we'll have the details coming up next.

welcome back, and good morning, 6:23. obesity during pregnancy could increase chances of autism for children. this is according to a new u.c. davis study published today. it's the first to link the two. research says on average women face a 1 in 88 chance of having a child with autism. obesity during pregnancy could increase that to a 1 in 53 chance. >> if you are planning a pregnancy, you might think about losing weight and getting your exercise routine in order and making sure you're controlling your blood sugar. >> previous research has linked obesity during pregnancy with stillbirths, preterm births and some birth defects. while children in san francisco may not get that free ride from muni after all.

the plan could be derailed by the agency that we supposed to fund it. directors for muni say they will approve the free passes for at least low-income children only if the metropolitan transportation commission provides $5 million in funding. several members of the mtc now say they're skeptical of using regional money for a project that would only benefit san francisco. well, cvs and walmart are about to become the latest stores to add those self-checkout lanes. the lanes make it more convenient to shop but also more convenient to steal. research shows theft is 5% higher at stores using self-checkout. at least two grocery chains outside of the bay area are already doing away with those lanes for that reason. but self-checkouts will increase by about 10% in the next few years. it is 6:25 right now. a new proposal could soon protect californians from potentially dangerous used cars. the used car safety act would provide a more detailed history of pre-owned automobiles.

it would also include a complete record of damage and maintenance work done. current federal laws only track the vehicle's title. that vote is scheduled tomorrow. well, new this morning, america online just announced it is selling more than 800 patents to microsoft. the deal is worth more than $1. 1 billion. the news pushed aol shares -- jumped 39% in premarket trading. aol said it intends to return a significant portion of the sale proceeds to shareholders. also new today, sony is cutting 10,000 jobs. the electronics giant lost money the last four years and expects to lose $2.7 billion in the fiscal year that just ended. now it's cutting 6% of the workforce. it is 6:26 right now. still to come on "today in the bay." oakland police say their phone lines were too busy over the weekend. find out what they want to do to keep it from ever happening again.

approach lewelling boulevard. this is closing the northbound direction. of course, 880 is an alternate for you. i would not use the hesperian boulevard offramp yet. i'll update you on that as soon as we find out. and another accident for the south bay, i'll bring that up in the next report. >> thank you. well, this morning, a concord family is dealing with a monumental loss. a father and daughter out for a saturday morning bike ride were hit and killed by an out of control suv. "today in the bay" is live in concord where investigators are trying to figure out what the teenage driver was doing before the crash. stephanie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. witnesses reported seeing the driver speed here along treat boulevard. investigators trying to see if he was distracted on his cell phone at the time when the 17-year-old driver crashed here on the sidewalk killing a father

and his 9-year-old daughter. the memorial growing. you see a heart-shaped candle melted now into the ground. people paying their respects here last night at a candle light vigil to remember the 41-year-old nuri of concord and his daughter hadessa. they were riding with helmets on before getting hit by the suv. >> you know, i have two sons and a daughter and we've ridden down the same street on our bikes, and i just -- i feel like it could have been any one of us. >> reporter: a lot of emotion, of course. and nuri's 12-year-old daughter was also hit but survived with minor injuries. the 17-year-old driver is in juvenile hall facing manslaughter charges. police are looking at the phone records to see if the 17-year-old was on his cell phone at the time. and it is also standard to perform toxicology tests to rule

that alcohol and/or drugs, but it could be days before we learn the official cause from investigators. live in concord, "today in the bay." a teenager heads to court today accused of killing an infant and injuring the baby's parents in case of mistaken identity. police say he fired 15 shots into the family's car last june in east palo alto as they were leaving a baby shower. they say zarigoza mistook them for rival gang members that beat him up the previous week. lawyers meeting with a judge today to go over that case. renewed calls to drop charges against a group of occupy protesters. 13 occupiers called the sproul 13 are facing charges for refusing to leave the cal encampment set up five months ago. their supporters will hold a rally today at the same spot. they say the protesters were arrested and beaten merely for linking arms at the site of the occupy camp. a disturbing find in san francisco's sunset neighborhood.

police right now investigating suspected racial graffiti on several homes on 23rd avenue and lincoln way. they were discovered yesterday morning. police say the homes were vandalized and spray painted with racist comments. well, this morning, the oakland police department is apologizing for being too busy to answer calls over the weekend. the department was fully staffed friday night, but by 6:30 that night, the department has 125 standing calls for service. with officers already working on 17 priority calls, the department says if you have a non-emergency situation, you should make requests online instead of calling dispatch. you just need to go to oaklandnet.com and search police reports. then you click on citizens online reporting system. a south bay city now looking to snuff out smoking in crowded public areas. you. you know, san jose already has a smoking ban. you can't smoke inside a restaurant or in public buildings. but if the city council approves this new proposed ordinance, you won't be able to smoke in restaurant patios either. it would prevent you from lighting up while waiting in line. it would ban smoking in outdoor common areas. at apartment complexes, condos and also in mobile home parks. some residents say it's too restrictive. >> i think it's pretty harsh. just the fact there's a lot of people that smoke, it's very addictive and they have trouble kicking the habit. to have them stop anywhere. in line, parks, restaurant. where can they go? >> reporter: breathe california is in favor of the ordinance.

the nonprofit submitted a petition with 190 signatures supporting the smoking ban. the city council will make a decision on this new proposed smoking ban tomorrow. reporting live in san jose, maryann favro, "today in the bay." 6:36 now. a major airline is departing oakland's international airport for good. united airlines will be pulling out of the airport on june 4th. united only serves about 1.5% of the airport's passengers with 11 weekly flights to denver. a united spokeswoman says that's just not enough to maintain service there. travelers booked on flights between oakland and denver will be offered other united flights or a refund. well, you probably didn't notice this around here, but north america is right now in the middle of the warmest year on record. temperatures in the lower 48 states for more than eight degrees above normal for march and 6 degrees higher than average for the first three months of the year. much of that country saw record highs, but turls were normal

right here in the bay area. >> yesterday was pretty nice, though, for easter festivities. we hope you had a good one. let's check the forecast with christina loren. a lot of people on spring break this week, huh? >> yeah, a lot of people on spring break, and i hate to be the one to break this news to you, but we've got a lot of rain in the works. just about every single day. you can see the clouds out ahead of the system. slated to bring our first rain drops to the north bay late afternoon, overnight in the east bay along the peninsula. and here in the south bay, probably have to wait until tomorrow morning, but we have a lot of rain on the way and it's not just the first system. we have another one on the heels. that's going to bring more rain thursday into friday. right now, though, grab your jacket on the way out the front door. 63 degrees, something you can peel off by noon inland, 68 by 4:00 p.m. and not all that much cooler bay side today. temperatures will be about 63 degrees as you make your way home from work there. it all works out like this, 2:00 a.m., starting to get light showers at the coast.

welcome back, everyone. it is 6:41. we are getting a sense this morning of just how the markets will react after friday's unemployment report. even though the overall number has dropped, the number of jobs created did not meet expectations. "today in the bay's" tracie potts is live from washington where politicians are reacting to this news. good morning. >> reporter: and so was wall street, john. good morning, everyone. stocks down 1%, the dow, nasdaq, the s&p this morning. march was not a great month for job creation. 120,000 new jobs out there, but it was about half of what we saw in february, way less than economists had predicted. and so now that's having an impact on the markets and on the campaign trail. republicans blaming president obama, democrats coming to his rescue saying this was one bad report after several months of

back in the mix and seems like spring breakers not getting a break in weather. >> more like a winter break. as we head through the remainder of the workweek, rain chances, and significant chances every single day starting tomorrow, lasting through saturday. so right now we're taking a live look over the city of san francisco. and you can see there we do have some clouds ahead of the front which has not yet arrived. that's going to arrive later on tonight in the north bay starting to see our greater bay area showers as we wake up tomorrow morning. we're talking about slick conditions trying to get back to work. tomorrow will be much more difficult than what we're seeing out there this morning. 48 degrees in san francisco, 42 in sunnyvale, no fog to report at this point. a mix of sun and clouds out there, sun just came up at 6:42, it's now 6:46. and you can see, take a look at this broad area of low pressure, this area really became organized over the course of the weekend. and you can see this deep white. that is moisture headed toward the bay area.

so as we head throughout the next 48 hours, things are going to change. today, high pressure's still in control, that cold front arrives as we head through tonight and our first north bay showers possibly late afternoon into this evening. and then tomorrow, wake up back here, tracking those showers on the radar starting at 2:00 a.m. we stop the clock on your future cast again at 5:00 a.m. yeah, you can see it's not just the north bay. we're going to talk about some heavy downpours at that point all the way from san jose to san francisco. if you are trying to get outdoors with the kids, 10:00 a.m. tomorrow, you will get a minor break to do so. not going to last long throughout the second half of the day. things start to change yet again. another round of rain as we head through late tuesday into early wednesday. then looks like wednesday on and off showers, you'll also have an opportunity to get outdoors thursday. another washout with another strong system on the way. and the next system is a cold one. so it's going to take your temperatures from the 70s today into the low to mid-50s as we round out your workweek on friday. showers throughout the day saturday, a few lingering

"today in the bay" is live in concord with how the stunned community is coping. >> reporter: here is where the saturday morning bike ride turned tragic with a father and daughter. you can see the memorial of a mountain of flowers, balloons,

candles, some still lit for the 41-year-old and his 9-year-old daughter. a driver jumping the curb and hitting them both. this is where many joined to remember the father and his young daughter. a second daughter, 12 years old was hit but suffered only minor injuries. now investigators are cheque phone records to see if the teen driver was on his cell phone, perhaps, distracted at the time. it is also standard for police to perform toxicology tests to rule out alcohol and/or drugs. but it could still be days, maybe a week before we learn the official cause from investigators. meantime, that 17-year-old driver is in juvenile hall right now and faces two counts of manslaughter. live in concord, "today in the bay." also this morning, new information about a bicyclist who may have been riding recklessly before plowing into a

man in san francisco. chris buchari ran several stoplights and stop signs before running into the man 11 days ago. that man, unfortunately later died from those injuries. he was approaching the intersection when the light turned red and he couldn't stop so he plowed through the crowded crosswalk. this morning, six people are recovering from injuries. one driver suffered minor injuries when police say he made an illegal turn near harrison street and was hit by a muni car and five people were hurt when a driver slammed into several cars not far from there. near brannan street. lighting up in one south bay city could soon get tougher. a proposal that's up for a vote this week. maryann, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you.

well, right now, you can't light up inside a restaurant. but if the city council approves a new proposed ordnance, you won't be able to light up in a patio either. the proposed ban also includes outdoor dining areas such as sidewalk cafes. it would prevent you from lighting up while waiting in line and it would ban smoking in outdoor common areas at apartment complexes, condos and mobile homes. the idea came about for programs dealing with tobacco prevention. the city council will make a decision on this ordnance tomorrow. reporting live in san jose, today in the bay. 6:52 now. neighbors say they're sick and tired of drunkenness along san francisco's polk street and now they're going to do something about it. neighbors will meet with the city's entertainment district today to talk about noise and crowd issues. neighbors say the real problem

is on polk between center and geary. bar owners say they do their best to control crowds but also point out their bars have transformed a once blighted area. police say they get plenty of calls in the area, but so far, nothing unusual. there was a new infusion of money to remove lead from homes in richmond and san pablo neighborhoods. richmond was awarded the $2.5 million federal grant to tackle that problem last week. some homes dating to world war ii, they're concentrated in central richmond's iron triangle and north richmond. lead can impair learning development in small children. this morning, construction is underway to make the calaveras dam more stable when the next earthquake hits. it will be closed from geary road south to the alameda county

line. the road will be closed weekdays only through june 8th. and in san francisco, the northbound side of the lefty o'doul bridge will be shut down next to at&t park. crews will be applying anti-skid coating to the bridge. the project will wrap up by 9:00 friday morning. and new changes in store for an upscale shopping store in palo alto adding five new retail stores, including a lifestyle center and a smaller bloomingdales department store. the plan calls for the demolition of the current bloomingdales to make way for the new shops. it would also mean the loss of 300 parking spots. no word on when the city will take up this matter. a natural gas boom is forcing companies to slow down production. so much gas has been stockpiled underground salt caverns and other storage areas are rapidly filling up. the unusually warm winter and

decreased demand are other reasons for the surplus. businesses and homeowners are benefitting with prices for natural gas at a ten-year low. this morning, construction crews telling us cal's new memorial stadium will be better and it will be safer than before. more good news, it's going to be done on time. cal's athletic director says memorial stadium will be done in time for their september 1st football opener taking on nevada. right now that stadium's undergoing a $321 million renovation and seismic retro fit makeover. the stadium will eventually seat 63,000 fans. people affected by the crash of a navy f-18 fighter jet in virginia will be able to receive compensation starting today. residents who completed claims will get initial payments of $2,300 for individuals and more for families. the f-18 jet crashed into an apartment complex in virginia beach friday. dozens of units were destroyed, but miraculously, there were no fatalities. the navy blames catastrophic

mechanical failure for that crash. peru's government making that plea to help miners trapped 800 feet below the surface. he's asking mining companies provide experts as well as heavy equipment to help free the miners. they've been stuck underground since thursday when that mine collapsed right on top of him. res kusers have been able to communicate with the men and provide them with liquids through a tube. well, cvs will honor mike wallace next sunday with a special broadcast. wallace died over the weekend at the age of 93. his career spans seven decades. wallace started as a radio entertainer in the '40s. he became a tv game show host in the '50s and joined "60 minutes" in 1958. he had interviews with seven u.s. presidents. and tom brokaw will be on
