it's been just over a week since that deadly shooting and.kle at oikos university what the school is trying to do to help the victims' families. an early morning fire knocks out power in a mall in san lorenzo, what may have caused it. and san joseanteta university set to make an announcement that could affect high schoolers' chances of getting accepted. and look at the city by the bay, this is san francisco's bay bridge, it's tuesday, april 10th, this is "today in the bay."

good tuesday morning, everybody, glad you could join us. it's about 4:31. i'm john kelly. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. let's check the forecast with christina loren. good morning to you. we need the rainte for our air quality to replenish the water supply for the summer months and this morning you're getting a good drive for now in san jose but the showers will continuously move onshore. i'll let youho will get the most and how long we'll be dealing with it and when you'll finally get a break, in the first full forecast. and here's mike. >> we had reports of flooding in the north bay but because of high tides affecting folks on the fringe of 101 and highway 1, but it's just cleared from the report. the curves at terra linda, we might have the rain coming through at least the clouds.

and the golden gate bridge shows a drier view, but a glow to the lights as well. watch as the weather and conditions change, wet roads and slick roads will be a factor. so far, a light volume, back to you. oaklands oikos university holding a memorial for the seven people killed in a shooting rampage last week. >> the tragedy was oakland's worst mass killing in history, stephanie truong is live. >> reporter: the doors at oikos are still boarded up, no word on when the school will reopen but through the trees you can see a banner hanging in honor of the victims. today the school is holding a memorial service at 10:00 in the morning in honor of the seven students and a receptionist killed in last monday's campus massacre, they ranged from their early 20s to early 50s, awk walks of life. the focus now is to help fund raise for the victims and their

family families. ic on oikosuniversity.org has a foundation set up to donate. they are trying to collect money for funeral expenses of two students whose families live overseas in india. from last friday through the end of this month the school has planned 30-minute memorial concerts every day at noon except for sundays here at the school's main entrance. you can see oikos trying to do what it can to give the families some kind of healing place as they cope. as for the suspect, former nursing student one goh has been charged with seven counts of murder and three counts of attempted murder. his next court date is scheduled for april 30th when he may enter a plea. live in oakland, stephanie truong, "today in the bay." in addition to today's memorialic on copes university is trying to bring healing through music. ♪

the school is holding daily memorial concerts to honor the seven victims of the shooting spree. jennifer zhang performed a song for one of the victims. the concerts will continue daily through the end of the month. fire crews are live at a fire. it is at a cash for gold on hesperian boulevard, firefighters think it started accidently by someone trying to steal copper wiring. pg&e cut off power to the building and expects to turn it back on around 9:30 this morning. the gang member on trial for the murder of a father and two sons in san francisco talking the stand. edward ramos accused of shooting anthony bologna and his two sons

in a drive-by shooting. one of the car's occupants opened fire on the victims and believing they were rival gang members. ramos testified he joined the gang in part due to a troubled childhood and growing up in an abusive home. the teenage driver in custody for killing a father and daughter on their bikes over the weekend could be released today. authorities must either file charged by the end of the day or release him to his parents' custody. investigators say they have a lot of evidence to examine so prosecutors say it's unlikely they'll be able to meet the filing deadline. police trying to figure out if speed, texting or talking on the phone played a role in the crash. in the meantime other teen drivers say that crash is a wake-up call. >> i definitely have been more cautious and i've been paying more attention to all the stuff, like, the signs, other drivers.

>> 41-year-old solomon nuri and his 9-year-old daughter odessa was killed in the accident. odessa's 12-year-old sister received minor injuries. a nanny in campbell akupsed of molesting children in his care is expected to be back in court today. john walker is accused of a dozen counts. he's been a nanny and worked at child care centers in the south bay. he's not yet entered a plea. the former modesto high school teacher who made national news when he began living with his student is due in court. 41-year-old james hooker made headlines back in february for abandoning his family and quitting his job to live with an 18-year-old student, jordan powers. hooker faces charges of sexual misconduct with a different teenager 14 years ago. he has a hearing in that case today. powers says she ended the relationship following hooker's arrest on friday. san francisco's police chief will be at city college today discussing the neighborhood's

recent mass murder. five people were found dead inside their home on house street that's just across from city college last month. the suspect bin thai look facing multiple charges. greg sir meeting with residents to discuss the public safety in that neighborhood. the town hall will be held in the wellness center auditorium at san francisco city college starting at 5:15 tonight. 4:37. san jose city council will vote on tougher restrictions for smokers. the proposed ordinance would ban it in outdoor areas of apartment buildings and also where people line up to wait for services. also today san jose state university expected to announce a decision on changes to the school admission guidelines. the changes would make it harder for local high school students to get accepted to the university. santa clara county applicants currently have a preferred status at san jose state but due to skyrocketing enrollment and

state funding cuts san jose state is trying to level the playing field. a decision is expected at 10:30 this morning. it's 4:37 right now and we check in with christina who says it looks like decent temperatures, but it will be a little bit wet, huh? >> right on the money, john kelly. good morning to you. temperatures are nice and mild, you might not need a jacket in novato, 57 degrees, same for oakland. only expecting temps to climb by 3 to 8 degrees at best. limited sunshine and rain-cooled air. showers are on the radar this morning. this is your real time doppler and you can see right now the peninsula is starting to get slammed. also we've got a pretty good-looking cell that developed moving into the see of san francisco and this will make your highways nice and slick with more on the way heading through the morning hours. watch out for the slick conditions and all of it pushing through the bay view district in the next 15 minutes.

welcome back, everybody, happy tuesday morning as we give you a live look outside at saf rafael, traffic not too bad early in the morning, mike will fill you in on what's happening and christina telling you to prepare for a little bit of rain with the nice temperatures. parents are reacting to a new study linking autism to a mother's body weight during pregnancy and mothers with autistic children they're skeptical. >> what, now we are being called fat moms, like, that doesn't really help us. >> our intention was definitely not to put blame or make women feel like they did something wrong. >> the study published yesterday in the journal "pediatrics" said women that are obese during pregnancy are 67% more likely to deliver a child with autism. one mother we talked to said if obesity is connected to autism, scientists need to study why those women are overweight.

a new education report out this morning suggests america's youngest kids are getting less behind. the national institute for early education research said state spending for preinside gardupre down. without early education, the report says many kids are doomed to fail. >> they don't learn much, they don't get rewarded by the school. before you know it they are on a path to high school dropout. >> program quality is another concern only 12 states met all the group's benchmarks for quality pre-k classes things like high lieducaly educated te et cetera. facebook is paying $1 billion to buy instagram. instagram only 18 months old

with about a dozen employees and already has a loyal user base of more than 30 million people. well done. experts say the move could be to stay ahead of one of facebook's competitors, that being pinterest, i'm sure that news will have an effect on the stock market and let's get a check of them this morning and for that we turn to jackie deangelis, good morning, jackie. >> good morning, john. the futures are a little lower after stocks sold off on monday. investors were reacting to friday's disappointing jobs report using it to pull money off the table. it was the worst day in more than a month. the asian markets were lower overnight and european markets were which off for easter monday were in the red. this morning we'll get data on trade and earnings season kicks off tonight with alcoa reporting after the bell. the dow dropped to 12,029 and

the nasdaq was at 347. and homeowners getting a better accounting of their monthly payment. the new regulations would require that lenders give people a standardized statement and warn them of any changes in interest rates or insurance fees. banks would also have to make a good faith effort to contact borrowers who were at risk of foreclosure and give them options to avoid that outcome. americans are paying record average prices for new cars but it's not due to sticker shock at the dealer. consumers are opting to load up on all the bells and whistles. the average price of a car is up 7% from last year. buyers are choosing more expensive trim levels and automakers are combining the right level of options and trim levels to keep buyers from turning up their noses. >> the bells and whistles, all right. let's see if we'll need the

umbrellas this week, checking in with christina. >> not a great morning to ride your bike to work, ladies and gentlemen. we've got showers on the way. and we have a lot of rain as a matter of fact on the way as we head through tonight. very slow-moving system, the first of two which will impact the bay area over the course of the week and unfortunately, yeah, the home opener at&t park this friday if you're going to be headed out there i think you will be dodging some showers out there. so, keep that in mind. good news is giants no longer on a losing streak. 57 degrees right now in oakland. 57 in concord. good morning to you there. showers on the radar basically up and down the peninsula, slick conditions with heavier pockets developing over san francisco, bay view district watch out for heavy pockets just developed there and starting to move over the bay bridge headed towards oakland as we head through the next 15 minutes, you're next to get wet. otherwise spotty showers throughout the day. it will be a timely process that system making its way into the

south bay but once it does so, we're actually expecting about half of an inch of rain right here in san jose, it works out like this. stop the clock at futurecast at midnight, starting to get heavier downshowers. you might be able to get outdoors from time to time tomorrow, tomorrow afternoon mostly dry and another round of rain moves in, another system, a colder one, 8:00 a.m. thursday starting to get heavy pockets in the north bay. we're dealing with the rain showers basically all day today, the first part of tomorrow, we'll get a little bit of a break for the second half of friday and then looks like we're finally going to dry out and see the 70s at the end of the seven-day forecast. for today, 60 in san jose, 62 in fremont, 63 degrees in los gatos. we're giving away the 70s we had yesterday. tomorrow just about the same temperaturewise. not as much rain in the forecast. on-and-off showers thursday, rain friday and a few showers very early saturday will make way to a nice afternoon, 70s by sunday and we're up to the

mid-70s by monday of next week. the good news is we'll get a taste of winter but we're right back to spring as we head through the second half of the weekend. back to you guys. it's 4:49. the man who shot and killed 17-year-old trayvon martin is breaking his silence through a new website. we confirm the website t realgeorgezimmerman.com is owned by zimmerman himself. the neighborhood watch volunteer who admits killing the unarmed martin asked his supporters to donate money. i would like to provide an avenue to thank my supporters personally and make sure that only funds provided are used for living expenses and legal defense. zimmerman said he can no longer work because of the publicity surrounding his case. in the deadly reno air race, and the national transportation safety board will release an investigative update as well as

safety recommendations in reno today. a seventh grader in washington state's being hailed as a hero this morning after jumping into action to save a school bus full of kids. you got to see this. this 13-year-old was riding to school on the bus just outside of tacoma when the bus driver lost consciousness, he jumped up to action and grabbed the steering wheel and, yes, saved the day. >> thinking i didn't want to die. i grabbed the wheel and i turned it to the right, took it to the side of the road, took the keys out of the ignition and the bus started slowing down and i thought, oh, someone call 911. >> all in a day's work. none of the students on board were hurt. the bus driver's condition unclear this morning and if you are curious exactly how the 13-year-old knew how to steer the bus he admits his mom lets him back the family car down the driveway from time to time so very important lesson every day. >> i guess so, learning it. but that made my heartbe beat

4:55 right now. police are boosting security outside of dodgers stadium this morning before today's home opener. l.a. police started patrolling the parking lots and parks near the stadium last night. the goal is to keep fans from arriving early and drinking before today's game. the increased security is the result of bryan stow's beating at last year's home opener. meantime, stow is still recovering after two men jumped him following that game. his family is suing the team saying stow will need lifelong medical care costing at least $50 million. after opening up the season
