opening day. the teams are preparing for this wet weather. plus, up in flames, a bizarre twist. a deputy and another person are slot and killed. a live look outside. what is in store weather-wise? we know a nice weekend is coming up. it's friday the 13th of april. this is "today in the bay." good morning, everybody. on this friday, we're feeling some luck on the 13th. thank you very much for joining us. it's 5:00. i'm john kelly. >> and i'm laura garcia. the night sky put on quite a show. >> feels good. >> yeah, that drive feeling safe inside that car.

as you get ready to head out the door this morning, severe weather still rumbling through the bay area. we have team coverage in place to give you what to expect. stephanie chuang at at&t park to give you a look at what could be a soggy start at the giants opener. bob riddell where lightning strikes growned a plane overnight. let's start with christina loren who's tracking it all in the weather center. >> i'm trying to keep up with it. i want to set you back 12 hours. lightning strikes. over 750 cloud-to-ground lightning strikes over the course of the night. as we head throughout the morning hours, i can tell you confidently that the situation is improving, but there's a lot of aftermath out there this morning. you want to give yourself time. even if you're headed out to the grocery store to get milk or the convenience store. take it easy out there. then we get a lot of improvement. i'll take you through the

forecast first. let's talk about what this active weather has done to your highway. mike has the day off. i'm covering traffic for him. mud slide at pacifica. highway, a double slide. expect delays here just about all morning long, blocking the northbound lane. we also have winds gusting in excess of 55 miles per hour over our open water bridges, and that will be the case as the system pulls out. a lot of instability leftover. travel very cautiously, especially as you make your way over the bridges. wind advisories in place, especially for the next few hours. back to you. >> thank you very much. as you might expect, thunder storms forcing flight delays at sfo. at least one plane returning after being struck mid flight by lightning. scary stuff out there. bob riddell with a live look. bob, the question is how is it looking out there, my man? >> reporter: still lightning. we're told that the flight that was forced to turn around was a united flight, 777 that was

bound for london. it will take off again today at 3:00 in the afternoon. the weather had other planes. shortly after takeoff, this plane was struck by lightning, forcing it to return to sfo. it landed safely. 258 people onboard. no one was hurt. everyone's okay. and it's our understanding the maintenance crews checked the plane. there was no delay. again, bound for london. another flight inbound from frankfort, germany. it was also struck by lightning. not once but twice. our own diane dwyer was onboard. >> we saw the lightning from the ground. we were watching it from the air, and it was pretty spooky, i have to say. and then, bam, it got hit once and the whole plane shook. and i don't know, about a minute later, bam, it got hit again. i talked with the flight

attendant. she said at this point the plane will be grounlt ded. they'll check it out for electrical problems. >> reporter: again, everyone is okay after the plane landed safely at sfo. as a result of the crazy weather, sfo had 61 flights. regional coasts. that sort of area they'd be flying to. they're telling us this morning if you're on one of those flights that canceled, you do want to call because there's a good chance, a possibility there could be a delay. reporting live, bob riddell, "today in the bay." >> throughout the night east bay got its share of lightning as well. check this out where our photographer tells us windows rattled during the storm as neighborhoods lit up for blocks. loud thunderstorms out there. nearby in concord, lights are coming back on for thousands of people. right now, just 720 commerce are without power in concord. way down from overnight when at least 4,500 people went without

power in the area because of the weather. about 2,000 customers in san francisco also lost power because of downed power lines. >> and, laura, over in san francisco, the weather was show-stopping. our crews out at the height of the storm last night, wow, and they saw this. at at&t park, heavy wind, rain, and lightning day before today's big san francisco giants home opener, but i guess we've all got to wonder will the field be dry enough to play. "today in the bay," stephanie chuang live in the park. good morning, stephanie. >> reporter: john, good morning to you. a very different picture from what we saw last night. we actually sat the umbrellas down about ten minutes but i picked it up a couple of minutes acre. it's sprinkling. it's very light. we're good to go. the giants' home opener should not be too bad here against the

pittsburgh pirates. folks here have been preparing the field for the usual colorful opening day. giants say, rain or shine, this game is happening. although the start time could change if the rain comes a little later. the facilities manager jorge costa is getting everything ready for the home opener. >> we have to have a lot of contingencies from what we're doing for our opening day ceremonies. we have to relocate, you know, essentially the stage for the opening day ceremony. >> reporter: new this year, a sub air drainage system used typically on golf courses that would help drain and dry the grass. the giants also have history on their side. no home opener has been rained out since the team moved here to san francisco in 1968. overall, only five games have ever been rained out at at&t. the last one was six years ago in april of 2006. that's the good news.

deputies say the man was holed up for nearly 12 hours before the fire was started. they say he was upset about being evicted and proceeded to shoot and kill two victims. one of those victims, 53-year-old sheriff's deputy robert paris. he was a 16-year veteran of the sheriff's department. the fbi and s.w.a.t. team have surrounded the building. the suspect is said to be a military veteran. a civilian was also killed during this shooting. new this morning, a 19-year-old man is now in the hospital after a drive-by shooting in east palo alto. officers say the victim was walking along poplar avenue near the bay shore freeway when a dark chevy pulled up and someone started shooting. the victim ran home before he realized he had been shot. so far the police have not released a photo of the suspect or a possible motive.

dive teams check the ooh voss reservoir in south santa clara county. they targeted five areas in a chessborough reservoir close to morgan hills. they identified those areas after they reviewed 1,000 solar images taken earlier this week. so far they have found nothing linked to this case. tomorrow there will be another voluntary search for 15-year-old missing since march 16th. it is 5:09 right now. theresident of the state fish & game commission is off the hook. dan rich, as you may raushlgs came under fire for this picture showing him on a hunting trip holding a dead mountain lion. california regulators say the trip violated the state's $420 gift limit. he could have been fined up to $5,000 for accepting that hunting trip to idaho worth nearly $7,000. it is 5:09 right now. time to check back with meteorologist christina loren.

she's over in the nbc pay area weather center. thunder, lightning. rain. what else is happening out there? >> you for goat the hail. things are improving. we still have the potential for strong thunderstorms to develop as we head through at least the next three hours. we're going to go ahead and take that risk down by about 8:00, 9:00 a.m. this morning. you can see the radar is still very active and we even got more shower activity on the way. however, the severe weather, that has move down. it all works out like this for today. 54 degrees by noon. a few showers coming down, but we lose that shower chance by the bay at the coast by 4:00 p.m. so what that means for the giants game is we could see a stray shower stream onshore, but things are looking pretty good. i want to report a couple of things when it comes to a morning slide. we've got a mud slide here. highway 1, a double slide. watch out for that this morning. also we've got an area that

another storm headed for the bay. could be a live one. you see the glowing lights out there. certainly add a little time as you head out. we'll have a look at the morning commute coming up. it is 5:14 right now, and there's another strange twist this morning in the saga of an alameda supervisor nadia lockyer. the message claiming her husband, state treasurer bill lockyer, supplied her with drugs for years before she actually ended up in rehab. when the reporter tried to confirm the story, lockyer said her account had been hacked and it was hacked by her former lover and the e-mail was nothing more than a fake. the treasurer's office denies ever supplying drugs to anyone. it's 5:15 right now. it's a little too late. in spite of appeals. the filmmaker says he will not reconsider his decision to scrap

the massive development. the environmentalists and neighbors have threatened him with numerous lawsuits which could have pushed his production out for years. he said he'll build the studio to someone else and sell the historic farmland. it's 5:16. you can expect laura garcia-cannon has been eating her wheaties. >> and i have tennis shoes that don't compliment this outfit but they're definitely necessary. there's improven't be. but you were probably woken up last night by pretty loud thunder. we had it from santa rose to san jose. 750 lightning strikes in the bay area. longtime residents reporting they had never seen a light nni event like that since they've been here. we're talking about an almost unprs dented system that came through. as we head throughout the day, we're going don't to improve. you can see right now, san jose

getting nice and slick with this red, yellow, moving over san jose. the good news is the lightning strikes are becoming less and less frequent and they will continue to. temperatures will be on the cool side. if you're headed to the home opener, you might see a stray shower or two, but as we continue through the day, the situation continuously improves. 67 degrees at 4:00 p.m. as you start to make your way home from work. the good news i can tell you if you did not get outdoor this week, if the rain kept you inside with the kids, you can get them outside both saturday and sunday. in fact, you might be able to get them outdoors. getting light showers at that point. but, hey, once that game starts, take a look at. this you get a lot of clearing. so that's the good news. if you have tickets to the home opener, not going to be a rainout. with booker to the 60s as we head through tomorrow. switching gears, let's talk about your drive. we have a couple areas that

jackie deangelis, live at cnb headquart c headquarters. >> the world's second largest economy eased. the 8.8% gdp is the slowest growth we've seen in three years. european markets are in the red today. of course, here on thursday, we saw stocks rally on hopes for a good earning season and renewed expectation for good economic stimulus from the fed and other global central banks. this morning we get some data on consumer prices and consumer sentiment. the dow rose 181 points yesterday to 12,986. the nasdaq up 39 to 3055. and more and more people are surprisingly saying take this job and shove it. it outnumbers those being laid off for the first time in 31s 2

one, 3-1. it is 5:24 right now. bay area residents can start getting in the america cup's mood. the party's starting today. races begin today in naples, italy, running through the weekend. it's san francisco, the home of the america cup next year. fans can watch the action at two venues. tonight's party kicks off at 5:00 in the rec room on california street in knob hill and then it moves to the republican on saturday and sunday. later on instead of bad guys, the police will be bagging up some groceries. it's all for a good cause. the officers will be there putzing their grocery bagging skills to the test. they'll also be is scoring shoppering all the way out to their cars, all in exchange for tips. and those tips will be donated to the special olympics. the fundraiser starting at 4:00 this afternoon. very nice. well, today is a day dedicated to the spooky.

good friday morning, everybody. thank you very much for joining us. it is right now 5:30 on the nose. i'm john kelly. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. this morning severe weather continues as rain. even hail pounded bay area roads and freeways. overnight a spectacular light show as our cameras rolled on, lightning and thunder illuminating the night sky. our photographer tells us windows rattled during this storm as neighborhoods lit up with all the lightning. this morning we have a team in place to help you plan your day. nbc bay area's stephanie chuang live at at&t park with a look at what could be soogy start for the giants' home opener. bob riddell with a live look and a story with a plane.

we're not out of the woods just yet, but the situation is improving. let's take you right to the active doppler radar. this is just the past six hours. we have more rain on the way, however, the bulk of the moisture has already come through. we'll continue to track these storms for you all morning long. we still have a risk of thunderstorms developing this afternoon and this morning, so we'll keep track of that. right now we're seeing much, much less in terms of the number of lightning strikes. 750 to report at this point over the bay area just over the past 24 hours. so you can imagine all that wet weather coming down at one time, wreaking havoc on your local roadways this morning. switching gears let's get right to your morning drive. mike has the day off. let's tell you about a serious delay. right now south 880, we have three areas flooded. you want to give yourself extra

time. although right know we see that green. we have a new accident to tell you about on 101 northbound as you approach ripple. it could become a problem. we'll let you know when that happens and when they're expecting that crash to clear as we head throughout the morning there. travel cautiously out there. you don't want to lose control of your vehicle. back to you guys. >> appreciate it, christina. causing big-time headaches for travelers. at sfo, flight delays not the only problem out there. passengers got a big-time scare after their plane had to return to the airport after their plane got struck by lightning. bob riddell is live at sfo. bob, how's everything looking out there? >> reporter: it's definitely calmed down in terms of the rain. good morning, john. let's talk about last night. there were well over 200 people who thought they were going to be taking off for united kingdom. they did, but shortly after takeoff, this united flight,

777, was struck by lightning and had to turn back immediately and land here at sfo. the landing was safe. 258 people onboard. no one was hurt. and the mechanics have checked out this airplane, and it is safe to fly. they will be taking off a little bit later today at 3:00. the last flight to come in to sfo, the last flight we believe that was allowed to land before all the traffic was routed was an inbound flight from frank ft. another united flight. and that flight, too, once it got into this area where we had this tremendous weather last night, it was struck by lightning, not once but twice. the way it was described to us, bam, the first time, the plane shook and a minute and a half later another strike. here's how it was told to us by our own nbc bay area diane dwyer who happened to be on board. >> there was a quick blackout in the cockpit, is my understanding. we landed safely. they kept their calm. they made all of us calm.

>> reporter: and, again, as you heard diane say, everyone was okay. there were about 60, 61 cancellations last night because of lightning. these are mostly regional flights. if you're on one of those flights today,y u want to call and make sure there aren't any delays. it's possibly they may be catching up with the backlog from last night. bob riddell from "today in the bay." the weather making it extremely difficult to navigate on the roads, so be careful, please. tow trucks had to bail out a lexus that ended up in a ditch in southbound 880. this is in mill pitapita. the only forecast the fans are concerned about is that game time forecast. the giants have their home opener, and after all this rain we've had out there, the fans are wondering if the first pitch

is going to happen on time. stephanie chuang with everything from at&t park. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. as kriz tchristina has been say we're pretty good to go. we've seen fans coming here. there is broadcasting from public house, a usual tradition. sweerch a couple of fans who came out of the taxi. they said they came three hours from north county. this year the team is honoring 62 giants with willie marks willie mccovey, and william perry on hand. from giants fans, focus is not on rain gear. it's all about the black and orange merchandise. >> she's looking for some gear. those are my three main things. giants, friends, and bratwurst.

for the very first time, man from berkeley hills murdered in front of his home. petr sykora deed in february in a confrontation with a trespasser on his property. the delayed response was he called a nonemergency line and because officers were monitoring and only pie protest. the family said he did, in fact, call an emergency line and they plan to speak at 11:00 this morning outside an oakland law office. a man accused of killing sue core, daniel dewitt, has been found mentally competent to stand trial. the planning commission recommended the dean's approved law. if passed it would allow the city to place restrictions on any business it chooses, including security. requirements as well as alcohol cut-off times.

the ordinance is in response to a recent spat of late-night fights around bars in downtown walnut creek. of course, with if weather, it sounds like the worst is behind us. let's check in with christina loren with the latest? >> the weather was its worth between 1:00 and 3:00 this morning. we were both here watching all that lightning firing off. most of that light nij was over the water. however, chances are if you're waking up with us this morning, that thunder woke you up at some point. now, as we head throughout the morning hours, we're getting a bit of break. take a look at san jose getting smacked right now with heavy rain. we also have embedded thunderstorms coming down. so you want to keep this in mind. thunderstorms embedded within this big blob of red and yellow. so as we head throughout the next couple of hours, it's going to continue to race into the central valley. it started firing off through here. we're not out of the woods just yet. if you can postpone your

it is 5:41right now. united nations security council meeting this morning to discuss a failed launch of a rocket by north korea. there's reaction all over the world on this one. the u.s. an its allies of accusing north korea of violating international rules. tracie potts live in washington, d.c., right now. she has all the latest on an extremely growing controversy. >> it is. good morning, everyone. it happened last night, our time and your time, but it was already friday morning in north korea. considered a very embarrassing situation for them. they invited dozens of

journalists to run. north korea's long-range rocket fell into the sea after lift-off. >> it didn't really fly too far away from the launch site. >> the koreans insist the rocket was being used to put a weather satellite into orbit. but they're calling it a provocative act. in a statement the white house says it threatens regional security and violates international law. the u.n. security council will discuss the launch later this morning. >> pyongyang has a clear choice. it can pursue peace and reap the benefits of closer ties with the international community, including the united states, or it can continue to face pressure and isolation.

thunder than they've ever witnessed in the bay area before. and if you're one of those people, i'm here to tell you, we had 750 lightning strikes some of that is very, very significant. at this point, just a couple. those frequent lightning strikes really starting to calm down at this point. in fact, all that weather is now pushing into the central valley. but san jose, we're just getting slammed down here at this point. as you make your way out the door, you want to give yourself plenty of time, especially in the city of san jose. you can see here really heavy rainfall still coming down and we're going to see spotty rain showers throughout the day. we're going to continuously improve. mid morning looking much dryer, and then by this afternoon, getting some sunshine. we still have that threat for thunderstorms and a lot of instability left over in our atmosphere. but 750 lie ning striengs overnight. heavy rain. we had small hail. many of your roads have areas of ponding and flooding out there. take it easy out there. however, we're going to dry out

as we head into the weekend. we're talking about 70-degree weather. we still have 4,000 people without power in concorde. san francisco, 500 people without power. and the santa cruz mountains, almost 400 people still without power from the strong lightning strikes. getting some improvement, but i wanted to point out the pink over north hamilton, yeah, a cool blast came in. you'll need your jacket about all day. if you're watching san francisco, you'll notice it looks mostly dry, which is great for that home opener which we can't wait to see, and, of course, we have that on our sister net sportwork. staying nice and comfortn'ablco. wednesday we have a weak system that's going to cross to our noncht we might see a few more clouds and maybe a stray somehow never the north bay. overall, still looking good.

in modesto where sheriff's deputies are trying to figure out if a suspect is alive or dead in baurng apartment. he's been holed up for 12 hours. still not sure what sparked the blaze. the man was inside. upset about being evicted. shot and killed two victims. one was sheriff's deputy robert paris, a 16-year veteran serving the eviction notice. a civilian was also killed in that shooting. >> laura, we're reporting another standoff in the shooting of five new hampshire police departments and the murder of the department's chief is dead this morning. police have been engaged all night in a standoff with man in the town of greenland where communications went silent just a few hours ago. a robot was sent into that home where the man and woman were both found dead. the police chief who was killed was just weeks away from his

retirement. 5:48. this morning two members of the coast guard have been found shot to death in alaska. they were at their world station at the kodiak islands communications base. the fbi has been brought in because of security concerns but they're not saying whether they're dealing with a double homicide or possibly murder/suicide. it's the first murder/suicide in the alaska area in more than a decade. a 19-year-old man after a drive-by shooting in east palo alto. the officer says the victim was walking along the bayshore freeway. he ran home before he realized he had been shot. so far they have not released the reason for the suspects. san jose police may soon be wearing small cameras on their uniforms. the request comes from the city's independent auditor. she wants officers to document
