opener, but will the weather delay the first pitch. >> we'll tell you what the giants have to say about that. and a live look outside. yeah, another storm moving through this area on friday, april 13th. this is "today in the bay." good morning to you and thanks so much for joining us. 6:00 right now. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> good morning, everyone. i'm john kelly. yes, the rain is still coming down this morning. we have bob riddell to tell us how things are checking out. >> the only reason i'm smiling right now is the situation is improving. good morning do you. if you've about got to get out the front door, the sooner you do so, the better off you'll be. area north of san jose. still getting moderate rain on the east end of the city. as we continue throughout the morning and especially by this afternoon, we're talking about a

much better scenario. we do have a cool day on tap. kind of a breezy day. but we're going to get rid of these showers, and we'll continue to dry out as we head through the weekend. now, with all this rain coming down, lightning strikes, thunderstorms rolling through the bay area. you've got a lot of aftermath. let's get right to your morning drive. we've got a couple of crashes to point out. as you approach holy street, you even got a crash blocking the lane. give yourself a little extra time. 880 northbound. we told you about three left lanes flooded out. as you approach a street. now, at this point, still no major delays, but we're watching that backup. yeah, it looks like it's going to start here in the next five to ten minutes, so we'll keep watching these two areas for you. leave early, travel cautiously, and all morning long. speaking of which, let's get to bob riddell. he has a very unique story for the bay area. good morning, bob.

>> reporter: good morning, christina. wi here at sfo with the story of a plane that was struck by lightning last night. this was plane bound for london, 777, a united flight, but shortly after taking off, because of all that lightning in the sky, one of those bolts did hit the airplane and that airplane had to turn around and land back here at sfo. all 258 people on the plane are okay. mechanics have checked out the airplane. we spoke with the duty manager here at sfo. and that plane will try again later this afternoon at 3:00 before its flight to london. the last flight we believe that landed here at sfo before all traffic was shut down because of that dangerous weather was another united flight, inbound from frankfort, germany, and it, too, was struck by lightning. not once but twice. our own diane dwyer was onboard. >> you saw it. bam, it got hit once and the whole plane shook and about a

minute and a half later, bam, it hit again. i talked to the flight attend t attendant. she said at this point the plane will be grounded. they'll check it all out for electrical problems. >> reporter: that plane also landed safely, and as diane mentioned, everyone's okay. there were 61 flights that had to be canceled last night. most of them regional. if you're on one of those flights and it's supposed to be taking off today or at least attempting to, there's a possibility some of these flights could be delayed because of the backlog. reporting live at sfo, bobry del bob riddell. this car headed off in a dch just before 4:00 a.m. luckily nobody was seriously injuried. and, laura, throughout the night, the east bay gets its fair share of lightning and thunder as well. we have video from a fundraiser. we're told the lightning rattled

the windows. neighborhoods were lit up for blocks because of all the bad lightning. in nearby concord, the lights coming on for thousands of people. right now only about 720 customers remain without power. that's way down from overnight when at least 4,500 people went without power in that area because of all this wet weather. about 2,000 customers in san francisco lost power as well because of the downed power line. 6:04. there will be plenty of cleaning up to do in one san francisco neighborhood today. we showed you some of this flooding on folsom street. stourjs and drain water. cruise had to lay out sandbags as they tried to prevent it from getting even worse. this kind of flooding has happened before. the city spent millions of dollars improving sewer lines back in 2008 trying to prevent the storm water system from overflowing. one business owner says he may have to leave the neighborhood he loves. >> i actually thought for today

alive or dead. he killed two people including a sheriff's deputy. during the night a fire broke out inside the home where the man was hiding but it's not clear how it started. the shooting started when the deputy and a civilian tried to deliver an eviction notice. the deputy killed was 53-year-old robert paris. he's a 16-year veteran of the department. the fbi and s.w.a.t. teams are still on scene. nearby homes have been evacuated since early yesterday afternoon. >> it is 6:06 right now. new this morning, a 19-year-old man in the hospital after a drive-by shooting in east palo alto. the police say he was walking along poplar avenue near the bayshore freeway when a dark chevy pulled up and he started shooting. the victim ran home before he realized he was shot. so far the police have not released a picture of the suspect or the possible motive. another strange story. nadia lockyer. an e-mail from lockyer's

personal can't was sent to a reporter at the "mercury news." . the message claims her husband, bill lockyer of the treasurer's office supplied her with drugs for years before she entered reb. when confronted she said her e-mail account had been hacked by a former lover. she c when we called, he categorically denice ever having supplied drugs to anyone. they're wondering if all the rain will delay the giants' home opener. stepha ste stephanie chuang is live. what's the story out there? >> reporter: i'm wondering how much more quiet workplaces are going to be, including our own newsroom. i know we've got a lot of giants fans here and we receive a lot of fans come here for the home opener. some as far as three hours away getting here in a cab.

matt throws the first pitch at 1:00 this afternoon. giants saying it's unlikely that will change. this year they honor the 62 giants, hall of farms like willy mays, willie mccovey, and others. we have to have a lot of contingencies to deal with. we have to relocate, you know, essentially the stage for the opening day ceremony. >> reporter: and these guys are used to this kind of weather. they've also got a new sub air drainage system used to dry the grass, a technology typically used on golf courses. they have never had a rain delay since 1958. also the last time that any game at at&t park was rained out was six years ago, 2006. so the giants have history on their side, but today fans need

time on their side. the ran has stopped. the giants say be here in your seats by 12:45. live at at&t park, stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." >> as stephanie mentioned, the peanuts and crackerjacks and fresh beverages will start flowing earlier. matt cain starting up on the mound for the giants at at&t park. gates open officially by 11:00 a.m. if you can't watch the ball game in live and living color you can catch it on comcast. sharks were down, 2-1 in the third period. they rallied, tied it up to keep hopes alive. in double overtime the sharks eventually tapped into the winning game -- the goal there. final score, sharks win it, 3-1. game two tomorrow in st. louis starting at 4:30 our time. >> correction. the final score was 3-2.

welcome back, everybody, on this friday the 13th. looking at the bay bridge in the distance, traffic starting to build up. christina loren will be along to talk about that. christina loren will also be along to talk about the weather. looks like a storm is expected to come through the area. brace yourself. it's 6:14. for the first time, a berkeley man murdered in front of his home, they'll address a response by the police. peter cukor died in february with a confrontation with a trespasser on his property. police say the delayed response was in part because cukor called a nonemergency line and the officers were monitoring an occupy protest. the family says they did call an emergency line. they plan to speak out side a law office.

the man accused of killing cukor, daniel dewitt, has been found incompetent to stand trial. a man was walking his dog when two men stopped him. >> they stopped hill and said, hold it right there. and he said -- and he just looked at them kind of weird, and he goes, what do you mean? they said, hold it right there, and he pulled out. >> instead he dove into his house and the gunman shot him. neighbored images captured images of the suspect. this is shown to be the getaway cars. neighbors say they don't feel safe anymore because of the lack of police patrol in the oakland hills. george zimmerman is back in jail under protective watch. the neighborhood watchman volunteer who shot and killed

trayvon martin made his first court appearance yesterday. he's charged with second-degree murder. an affidavit things he profiled martin and he should not have ignored a 911 dispatcher's order to not follow the unarmed teenager. zimmerman now faces a formal arraignment set for the end of may. 6:16 right now. north korea's failed rocket launch a humiliation for them. when asked about the failure. one local security expert said i wouldn't want to be a north korea rocket scientist today. the white house still calling that launch a provocative launch. coming up in a live report in a matter of minutes. >> we're certainly going to hear a lottery reaction. ing. >> especially the giants fans all wondering, oh, no, is the game going to happen? well, if you're one of the lucky

holders of a ticket to today's home opener, the good news is you will be able to see that game, i do believe, with almost 100% confidence. 99.9%. the game will go on. now, we could see a few light showers drift onshore and the potential for maybe an isolated shower. i wouldn't be shocked if there was a delay, but i think that the situation will greatly improve that we're not going to see a rainout. we do have an improvement in san jose. still watching a pretty significant bachlt moderate to heavy rain coming down. overall, 750 lightning strikes reported overnight. we're going to have to get a new total for you with a couple more lightning strikes just over the course of the past two hours. heavy rain in addition to that. in addition to that. small hail. we have ponding on your local roadways still there. it's going to take quite some time for the highways and the local roads to clear out. san francisco still has 500

people without power. 4,000 people without power in concorde and pg&e working hard as well where 800 people are still left without power due to the strong lightning strikes firing off for three straight hours between 1:00 and 3:00, in fact, between 1:00 and 3:30. we stop the clock for you on you futurecast at noon. i want to point out a couple of things here. looks like san francisco will be dry at this point, but you also see that peak over mt. hamilton. that's an indication of the cold air. if you're going to be heading out, it will be chilly and breezy. you won't have to worry about it getting rained out. not warm by any stretch. 58 degrees. 55 in san francisco. during game time, about 52 degrees. the good news is if you want the sunshine, we've got it for you. as of saturday, 52 degrees. warmer on sunday, up to 72 degrees. then we're going to max out, looks like on tuesday. 72 degrees.

a gorgeous looking week shaping up as we head into next week and this weekend looks good as well. switching gears now, as you can imagine. starting in fremont, 680 northbound, we've got a crash creating delays at about a miechlt mission boulevard, you'll find slow-moving traffic. 680 northbound. blocking the left. stay to the right through there. i want to show you 880, which is getting jammed up in both directions through the city of oakland. you can see here the traffic -- although, we usually like the friday lights -- not so much the case, and it's early. expect the pretty drive. give yourself extra time to nash gate any of the weather effects, branchs on the highway, et cetera, et cetera, back to you. >> all right. a big boost for b.a.r.t., its projected budget for the fiscal year shows a surplus of $30 million to $35 million. what they want to do with the

a law giving wall net creek businesses more control over alcohol. the ordinance before the city council would allow the city to place restrictions on any business that chooses, including setting security requirements, an alcohol cut-off time. the ordinance is in response to a late-night spate of violence in wall net creek. it looks like we've peaked at the pump. why you may not be paying any more to fill up any time soon. ♪

not last as the summer driving season gets into gear. good news for google investors but this rolls out in a confusing way. the search engine company going to split its stock two ways, sort of. google, launching another stock to trade on wall street. every shareholder will get one share of that stock for every share he or she already owns in google stock. now, this basically creates a 2-1 stock split. >> silicon valley has a giant contract. hp signed a $250 million military contract to store information on what it calls a private cloud for the u.s. army. basically it's storage to go. in a 20-foot-long container packed with servers that can actually be dropped into the battlefield. the data is secure, available to the army when needed. >> basically a data center in a container that can be dropped anywhere in the world and there you have your cloud. >> the system is called a performance optimize data center

what i can tell you is you'll want to bring your rain gear with you but you'll be able to lose it later in the f an. as you can imagine, all the wet wlo coming through the bay area. thunderstorms, lightning, hail. we had aftermath on the local roadways. mike haas the day off. i'm doing double duty. a new area to report with flooding. as you approach whipple, you want to stay to the right as we have reports of flooding blocking the left-hand lane. we did have an earlier crash at there location. you want to take it easy through there. also reports of flooding on 880. that's southbound as you approach a street. starting to slow at the bay bridge toll plaza. you want to give yourself time. we have wind advisories for all of our bay area bridges. it's one of those mornings you don't want to go rushing out the front door. speaking of which, our own bob riddell is live this morning. this lightning in the bay area, some people say that have never

heard thunder like this in their life. you have a unique incident associated with some of those incidents. good morning. >> reporter: yeah, unique, and fortunately everyone's okay. there were 258 people last night -- good morning to you, christina -- who were supposed to be in the uk by now, but mother nature, as it turns out, had other plans for them. just after taking off from sfo at 9:00 last night, lightning struck a united flight bound for london, forcing it to turn back. the 777 land safely. everyone on board is okay. that flight will try again later today at 3:00. a mechanic has checked out the plane. it's our understanding that everything is fine on there. no electrical damage. another flight inbound last night, this one from frankfort, jaem, landed safely after being struck by lightning, not once but twice. nbc bay area anchor die an dwyer who happened to be onboard said the first strike shook the plane and about a minute and half

later came the second. >> reporter: there was sort of a quick blackout in the cob pickps my understanding. >> reporter: there were 61 flights that had to be canceled last night because of all this lightning. they're going to try to get those flights back onboard today. these are mostly regional flights. if you're on any of these flights, you will want to call in advance because there are possibilities that flights could be delayed. reporting live, bob riddell from "today in the bay." >> people are tweeting about the scary experience. nathan mark said just had the scariest flight of my life, two aborted landings in sfo than then file landed in san jose. holy smokes. then lightning hit plane, loud bang, screams, oxygen masks, screaming, dumping fuel, returned to sfo. no joke. >> yeah, no joke. a long list of lightning and

started shooting. the man said he hadn't been shot until he got home. so far the police have not released the description of the suspect or a possible motive. san jose police may soon be wearing small little cameras on their uniform, the request coming from the city's independent police auditor. she would like officers to document the ethnicity of everybody ordered to curb sit and log the reason for the stop. there have been complaints officers target minorities during minor traffic stops. the city is trying to build trust between the police and the community. giants are finally home. we're all ready for them. will the weather put a big damper on the game today? san francisco's giants home opener set for today. stephanie chuang with the game plan. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, laura. the rain has been off and on, but light when it hits. fans don't care. it's another sold out home opener at at&t park. this here, a lot of excitement.

the team celebrating the 62 giants, the first team that made it to the world series, including the "say hey" kid himself, willy mays. there are going to be 62 players, not only meis but willie mccovey and gaylord perry. the game is going to happen, rain or shine. it looks like nothing will stop matt cain from throwing that 1:35 first pitch. be but for giants fans, they're excited. they're weight for the smell of the grass and the jettins to fly and the sky. no home opener has ever been rained out since the giants moved to san francisco back in 1958. and the last time any game was rained out at at&t park was six years ago in april of 2006. the giants say get here as soon as possible. be in these seats by 12:45. gates open this morning at 11:00. live at at&t park, stephanie

ready to go. good morning to you. we're improving dramatically out there. we're seeing all the shower activity rolling through, racing through the central valley. as you can see through the live picture over alcatraz, we're getting a nice day shaping up over the city of san francisco. and you can see what came through here as a result. we've got a lot of aftermath on your local roadways and will likely, as we head through the next few hours but the sun will be out and dry us pretty quickly. much better scenario. dry highways across the bay area. we still have some active weather along 101 and morgan hill in st. martin. keep that in mind and travel cautiously. 46 degrees. a few scattered showers, very light in nature at noon. and then by 4:00 p.m. mostly cloudy conditions. we'll see a mix of sun and clouds. breaks in the clouds as we head throughout the day. let's fly you into at&t park. this is what it looks like. we have a potential for a straight downpour.

today tracie potts joins us live in washington with more on what happened. good morning. >> laura, good morning. observes say the rocket shot into the air and broke apart almost immediately, minutes later falling into the sea, embarrassing for north korea because they had called in dozens of journalists to watch this. north korea said they were watching a weather satellite and all of this was part of a 100 anniversary. they're not buying that thing that this was yet another provocative act violating international rules. the u.n. security council meeting here in just about 15 minutes had an emergency meeting to discuss this situation. secretary of state clinton saying that pyongyang has a clear choice here to go for peace or to face pressure and isolati isolation. also there's the issue of food assistanc assistance, aid from the united states to north korea. the white house now saying that

rolling through the bay area f we had some active weather at midnight and throughout the morning hours. take a look at all the improvement. right now the showers racing into the central valley. so just as quickly as this system came through, it going to exit the bay area. however, as it pulls out, we've got lots of instability. it's not going to be great day for outdoor activities. we're still expecting very light spotty showers. right now, take a look. so san jose, we has showers. now almost entirely clear. just some showers coming down around the western facing foothills of san jose. this is what we're looking at. maybe a straightdown pour. you want to bring your rain gear just in case. the game will go on. of course, you can catch that game on our sister station. comcast sportsnet bay area. we're all so excited about the game.

but i'm sure the giants fans heard the thunder rolling through. more than 750 light anything strikes in the bay area between santa rosa and monterey. as a result, 700 are still out power. 4,000 people in concord where a lot of lightning came through. the east bay got slammed. futurecast tells the story. looking mostly dry at that time. as we head throughout the day, i do think we'll see a few stray showers move onshore, but overall, that game looks kind of cold and blustery. seven-day outlook has good news. 70 degrees by sunday. we'll be at 72 by tuesday and wednesday and thursday, get a few more clouds and hold onto comfortable conditions and that sunshine. all right. switching gears now, the good news is no major accidents across the greater bay area. just aftermath from those storms. we've got an area you want to watch out for, 101 as you approach whipple, watch out for

flooding in the left-hand lane there. that's headed northbound. also taking you live to 880, we have flooding at a street he heading northbound. traffic now back up to speed. back to you, guys. >> christina, thank you very much. as expected, severe weather causing headaches for travelers. passengers getting a big-time scare when their plane had to return to the airport after being struck in mid flight by lightning. that strike got hit in the air. bob riddell has all the details on kind of a scary night out there. bob, what's happening? >> reporter: yeah. what we've seen on twitter, it scared some people to death and that's understandable. last night flight 777 wuk taking off from sfo bound for london when lightning hit the airplane. the airplane had to immediately turn back and do a landing. everyone's okay. the plane landed safely, but, of

course, it was quite a scary event. our understanding in talking with the duty manager, the plane has checked out okay. they'll be taking off later this afternoon at 3:00. now, the last plane to land at sfo before flights were grounded during that extreme weather last night was another united flight inbound from frankfort, germany, as that airplane was struck by lightning not once but twice. our own anchor diane dwyer happened to be onboard. >> reporter: we were watching from the air and it was pretty spooky, i have to say. bam, it got hit once, and the whole plane shook. and then, i don't know, about a minute and a half later, bam, it hit again. i talked to the flight attendant. she said at this point the plane will be grounded. they'll check it out for any electrical problems. >> reporter: all the people on diane's flight and the 258 people on the other united flight, everyone is okay.

there were 61 flights that had to be canceled last night. so if you were on one of those flights, primarily regional flights, they'll be trying to take off again today. there's a chance it could be delayed as the airlines try to move through that backlog, so you may want to call in advance. bob riddell from "today in the bay." back here on the ground, wet roads caused an accident in milpitas. police say a car hydroplaned and landed in a ditch off jocelyn road before 4:00 a.m. good new, nobody was seriously injured. the east bay got its fair share of thunder and lightning as well. check out this spectacular video taken near martinez where the photographer said windows rattled. following up with that rain, there's all kinds of clean-up still to do today in san francisco's neighborhood. right now we'll show you some of the flooding on folsom street yesterday morning. storm drains backed up.

sewage and drain water flowing into homes and businesses. crews had to lay out sand bags to try to prevent it from getting worse. this kind of flooding haas happened before in the city. they spent millions of dollars trying to improve the sewer lines back in the area back in 2008. but apparently, no, it's not working. one homeowner says he may have to leave the area that he loves. >> i thought for the first time i may not be able to go through this again, which means i'd have to move. so that's a beating. >> and that man's business, the stable cafe, pretty much unstable at this point will be closed for several days. over at at&t park, the weather made quite a show as well. steady sheets of rain falling last night. will the field be dry enough for today's home opener? were monitoring an occupy protest. now the family says cukor did call an emergency line and they plan to speak at 11:00 this morning outside an oakland law office. the man accused of killing cukor, daniel dewitt, has been found mentally incompetent to stand trial. five minutes away from 7:00, and developing news this morning in modesto where sheriff's d deputies are trying to determine if a suspect is live or dead in a burning apartment. he shot and killed two people. one of those victims was 53-year-old sheriff's deputy robert paris, a 16-year veteran of the sheriff's department. the fbi and s.w.a.t. teams surrounded the apartment, evacuating nearby homes. still not clear what started the fire happening inside the apartment, but deputies want to make sure it is safe before they went inside. the second person killed was a
