you about. first and perhaps most importantly we want a check of the forecast with rob mayeda. >> and is the weather much calmer. it dried out yesterday, and that trend will continue. our temperatures mostly in the 50s, except for santa rosa, a bit 67 patchy fog and low 40s there. beal see a sea breeze today that should keep the low clouds on the coast and high clouds drifting in this afternoon. we should see numbers in the mid 60s. and then 50s closer to the coast. coming up in the seven-day forecast, we'll talk about temperatures as much as perhaps the mid 70s. we'll have that in a few minutes. we begin this morning with an update on the search for four people missing at sea. they were on a yacht raising when it ran aground near the

farallon islands. at the search was suspended because of weather conditions. you're looking at a live picture of one of the coast guard cutters preparing to head out. thises from yerba buena island. today in the bay's monty francis records from a u.s. coast guard station sfo. >> reporter: this shows the rescue of the rescue of two men from the farallon islands. a fourth person was pulled from the water already deceased. max kazmarek was the rescue swimmer, and he pulled two to safety. >> they were visibly shaken and injured. they went through a really traumatic experience. but they made it through. they were really grateful. one of them gave me a hug on his

way out. and i hope he never gets himself into another situation like that. >> reporter: we talked to one sailor who did not take part in the race, but was out in his boat and heard a mayday calls. the waves were 10 to 15 foot, tops were blowing off of them. it was really different conditions. >> reporter: this is youtube footage of the sailboat low-speed chase competing in another race. it was competing with about ten other boats in a race from the st. francis yacht club around the farallons and back the families are waiting on word for the fate of their loved ones. i feel terrible. i feel really sore for then. i don't know how you would survive in the water in those kind of conditions for very long. >> monty francis, "today in the

bay." they are expected to be okay. a toddler is in safe hands after being found at the scene of a disturbing murder/suicide. the shootings took place in the parking lot of a mcdonald's in the gould center on east capitol expressway on saturday morning. a 17-month-old girl belonging to the vietnamese couple was found in his car. people living in the area are upset a child was put in arm's way. >> there was a child involved as well, it destroys me. no child should be around that, especially a baby. i really hope everything is okay with the baby as well. >> police say the little girl is in the protective custody. they have not released any details. a group was determined to improve the reputation of a

street. many of them are off-duty security guards. yesterday evening they focused their efforts on international boulevard in oakland. organizer hope to empower the people in the area. they say everyone deserves to be safe, and by making their presence known, they believe people will come out of hiding. >> we've seen children be able to come out and maybe that want to do buy, let's say ice cream action and felt discouraged to do so because of what was happens in front of the house. once we show up and that negative disappears, they feel free to come out and enjoy their day. >> they do not carry weapons. gun advocates are aiming sights the one east bay city, but also the leaders want to ban the selling of firearms from residential areas of the city. instead it will restrict sales only to commercial zones. those who oppose the measure say the city is violating the second amendment, but city leaders says

the issue is on zoning alone, not firearm ownership. a public hearing will take place this tuesday. there's one of the biggest starzz for the giants will be out of the season. brian wilson will likely need elbow surgery. an mri has revealed what the giants are calling, quote, structural issues. wilson is going to get a second and third opinion, one likely by sports specialist dr. james andrew. if surgery is required, most likely he will be out for the season. >> initially i was being optimistic that he would be fine, but after the tests done yesterday, you know, it doesn't look very good right now. >> it hurts a lot. the guy is a great teammate. off the field, it's irreplaceable. then when you talk about the

welcome back to the broadcast, everyone. 7:14 is the time. a live look at the golden gate bridge. having a birthday this morning, i believe, looking a little overcast in san francisco right now, but what does the day have in store for us? rob has a look at that. >> hey there, we'llee the low clouds lingering around the coast today. that will be one thing we'll by watching, but keeping an eye on the midwest and plains, youan c see severe weather moving through eastern kansa c into missouri right now. the greatest threats for severe weather today, according to the storm prediction centeran shoul be up towards iowa, western wisconsin, and southeastern minnesota today, but you can sigh the severe weather continues down through eastern oklahoma and north-central texas. dallas getting hid by very

powerful thunderstorms, more producer super cells are likely out in the plains. but as we head back to the west, things are looking pretty calm. we will see accepts warming up a bit. right now 40s and 50s outside, a little chilly around sanity rosa, but these low clouds also help to keep up the temperatures. mostly 250 around the bay. there you see the winds still coming in out of the southwest into fairfield. we'll keep our temperatures pretty mild today, mostly 60s upper 60s breezy at times. we'll see high pressure keep most of the storms off to the north, mild temperatures the middle part of the week. and that's when temperature should start to climb. satellite radar shows you some high clouds spilling on over that ridge the high pressure. as we go through the afternoons.

you did i the daytimes heating, and hilltops. out toward mt. hamilton, you may see a stray shower there, as we go through the afternoon. you can see high choice racing on by, but a very dry forecast. mid to upper 60s a little cooper, as you get in towards the inner bay. you'll see numbers in the upper 60s close 70s in pleasant ton. then 50s along the seashore today with the morning clouds breaking up, but the coastal clouds hanging up. alternates warm are tomorrow, and the mid part of the week we'll see a system weaken the high pressure a bit. next weekend that high building up from southern california back

over northern california. we should see some of the warmer temperatures we have seen in a while, maybe mid to upper 70s by next weekend, and then trending warmer late on in the week. we want to talk more about those tornadoes in the midwest. at least five people are confirmed dead after a tornado touch down in northwest oklahoma. forecasters say the bad weather isn't letting up today. nbc's jay gray has the latest. >>. >> let's call it like it is. it's becoming a killer tornado. >> reporter: sirens sounded much through the plains, warning of monster storms moving fast and touching down for quick strikes. leaving pockets of destruction like this in thurman, iowa. >> it just seemed to last forever and forever. >> we've got a fire, it looks lie. >> reporter: destruction spread from iowa to oklahoma. >> about halfway to the ground.

>> reporter: storm chaser from kfor fed back pictures live. as forecasters kept up a steady drumbeat of warning. >> everybody out ahead of this needs to go to a safe spot, no doubt about it. >> the we were receiving washington. dave henman told the weather channel's gym cantore that advance notice was important. >> the warning you put out, we take it very, very seriously. normally we don't get this much warning. >> reporter: but at times they were covering so much ground they couldn't be avoided. >> it's following us. >> but we're okay, right? >> yeah. >> reporter: that was jay gray reporting. parts of the bay area are cleaning up after the recent downpour. some states are hoping to receive any amount of rain. wildfires have been erupting in new york, new jersey and florida. water levels are low in colorado

streams, where there is less snow to melt in the rivers. farmers in the south are watching their crops evaporate. >> i've been farming pretty much my lifetime. we've in the fifth year of a conservative drought. experts are blaming a la nina event since 2010, unusually cool pacific waters have been bringing drier than normal conditions to the south. a landmark lighthouse reopened to visitors. the point bonita lighthouse was closed because of a worn pedestrian bridge. it has since been replaced, it's reached by a steep half mile walk. the lighthouse is ope to visitors or osaturdays, sundays and mondays from 12:30 to 3:30 in the asp. dust off your bikes, roller skates and strollers. sunday streets in sfanz will take you on a new route today.

the golden gage bridge -- at the same time. its southern approach will be torn down in less than two week. no fanfare, but it is a critical link to the golden gate. here's today in the bay's george r rosato jr. >> reporter: meanwhile, at its southern end, the doyle drive approach opened with hardly even a cake. >>le 2k0i8 drive was built in 1936. it was actually completed a year before the golden gate bridge. >> reporter: it's somewhat telling that the opening day procession that would cross the golden gate bridge started its journey on doyle drive. >> definitely the next-door neighbor. it is not as beautiful by any stretch of the imagination. >> reporter: but now as the golden gate bridge nears the

75th anniversary celebration, doyle drive is nearing its date with the wrecking ball. >> it's reached the end of its useful life. >> reporter: planners announce they will tear it down the weekend of april 27th. traffic to and from the bridge will be diverted onto the new presidio parkway. >> this ultimately will be the southbound tunnel. >> doyle drive bears the names of early transportation advocate frank doyle. it was built at a time super the presidio was still an active arm base. >> actually they wanted to keep people out of the army base. >> reporter: and time was not kind to doyle drive. it's listed as one of the most seismically unsafe bridges in the united states. though it took years to build doyle drive, it will take just a weekend to knock it down.

a little cool on the coast. low to mid 60s and inland. the seven-day photographs will show temperatures are trending warmer. we'll talk about that in the full forecast in just a few minutes. looking forward to it. thank you very much, rob. the search continues for four missing sailors involved in a boating descend near the farallon islands. you're looking at live pictures fromernaba bueay. the coast guard video shows the rescue of two men from the rocks off the farallons yesterday after the 38-feet sailbot ran aground. a third person was rescued by a helicopte helicopters. a fourth person was pulled from the water already deceased. max kazmarek was the one hoisted

to help rescue them. >> they were very grateful. i hope he never gets himself into another situation. >> it was in a race from the st. francis yacht club. the two men were bruised with hypothermia. they were also in shock, but are expected to be all right. police in san jose are searches for answers. the shootings happened in a parking lot, and today's in the bay kimberly tere reports, they found a abandoned toddler nearby. >> it's strange to see it happen in broad daylight. >> cory said he was inside the mcdonald's this morning when the shooting happened. >> i walked over by the bmw. i looked at the guy's body on the ground to see if it was breathing. i didn't see no breathing, so i

assumed he was deceased. i walked over across the parking lock to look in between the cars where the girl's bondy was. >> reporter: according to other witnesses, who did not want to go on camera, a man shot the woman and then walked back to the silver bmw and shot his own life. >> we're confident there's no danger to the public safety. >> reporter: the 17-month-old was strapped into a car seat. a friend came to pay his respects and said the child belonged to the deceased man and whom who he said were dating. >> there was a child involved as well, it destroys me, because no child should be around that. i really hope the baby is okay. >> she's now in the -- as they investigate what led up to the apparent murder/suicide.

on the way. we'll have his full forecast in just a few minutes. on budget matters, arnold schwarzenegger and current democratic governor jerry brown may have more in common than non. let's turn to larry gerston. the common thread is -- >> their opposition, the bad guys, if you will. much of the time schwarzenegger and brown have been battling the same bunch, and each asked the legislature to make major can you see, different things here and there, depending on the year and the administration, but each time they've been stonewalled, stonewalled by the legislature that just didn't want to do. be it republican or democratic. >> that's a question, then, when governor schwarzenegger was in power, you would say he's republican, that explains why they're not getting along. >> yes. >> so let's get a democratic

governor and they'll work together. >> so would you think. >> why doesn't it work? >> brown asked these guys to do something, they say we can't, probably two big reasons. one has to do with their constituencie constituencies, the other has to do with their responsibilities. they have different constituencies. why? brown is elected by the entire state, legislators are elected by districts, and they're watches those guys more carefully. the governor has to propose changes. he's looking at these big things. these big money ticket items. he says, look, you've got to find a way to match these expenditures with what we've got coming in, and the legislature says, no, we don't have to do that. why? because we are the ones who make the policies, and we are the ones who catch it when we make those cuts. >> okay.

the split in the government, the legislature branch and the executive branch, this was set up this way, the way it's supposed to work. is it working? >> it's back to that old concept we call checks and balances. everybody reads that in 12th grade in high school, something like that. it works a lot of the time, but you put these two things together, constituencies and responsibilities, and you add the fact that we have no money. then the thing becomes almost impossible to do. that's when everybody tends to break down. the finger pointing goes amok. and what happens is these guys say, look, we just can't make this work. well, no, we can't make it work when we're i did spending too much on the not take in enough. everyone wants the spending, the programs, nobody wants to pony up. >> no money, finger pointing, and the differences all lead to the next quick, gavin newsom did

a one on one interview, some very interesting stuff. he criticized governor brown for the cuts he's making, saying governor schwarzenegger, he faced bigger deficits and didn't do what he's doing. what's your reaction to hearing the lieutenant governor say that? >> when lieutenant governor newsom was mayor, he was getting the same kind of criticism. when you're at the top, you have to do what you can to make ends meet. jerry brown, either to his credit or not has asked repeatedly the legislation to raise funds. the legislature hasn't done it. that being the case he's saying, okay action cut spending, we're going to walk in july 1st with a huge deficit. nobody wants to talk about it right now. everyone will look up and say, what happened? >> well, it's been happening all along. this gridlock will get ugly as time goes on. >> it actually is pretty scary. thanks for shedding some light

fayetteville, arkansas. that's home to the university of acsaw. it looks like that cell will stay to the north, as it continues to race on off to the north and east. it would continue today up towards iowa, parts of minnesota, western wisconsin stretching down here just to the north of the dallas/ft. worth area, as that line continue toss advantage. back off to the west. the storm track is lifting off to the north, a few showers dropping up and over, but around the bay area, it should be a nice afternoon with patchy low clouds lingering around the coast. 51 in lockeland, 50 in san francisco action a chilly 43 in santa rosa. 46 right now in san jose. we will see -- i think and then come later this week as high pressure begins to turn strong, we'll see warmer temperatures to wrap up the workweek ahead. this morning a lot of low clouds, misty skies on the coast

and peninsula. we'll see the low clouds out, but inland valleys warmling up pretty good. and breezy at times on the coast. we'll see that to wrap up the weekend. second half of the week, that should be the warmer temperatures. high pressure is building, but we call it kind of a flat ridge of high pressure, because it's not really deflecting all of the energy. some of these clouds will continue to spill in. we'll see that and during the next couple days, the temperatures cooling a bit. another thing we typically will see as we go through april and get cool air aloft and 2k5i789 heating, sometimes you see thinks showers popping up. we may see that this afternoon. in the meantime cooler conditions along the coast and there you see high clouds racing on by, and tuesday a bit of a cooldown. north of santa rosa, so for your sunday we'll see numbers mostly in the low to mid 60s and kind

of a hazy day in, but warmer around san jose, 'we get to the trivalley, up around concord and pittsburg, close to 70 and pleasanton. kind of a cool day, nice day for baseball, but a cool afternoon around the ballpark, as we see the northwest winds off the ocean, keeping temperatures pretty mild today. tomorrow mailing just a bit warmer, but not noticeable. the warm-up i think you will notice right now looks like the second half of the week. we could see 70s as we head towards next weekend. you can see how it progresses around the country, again day 2, midwest day still stretching back into the southern plains. >> since a nice seven-day with no rain in it. >> very true. a museum features sand
