when a man was shot in the chest. paramedics rushed that man to a nearby hospital where he is right now listed in stable condition. officers tell us only one arrest has been made so far. >> an emotional day for families of several missing boaters. bob redell live from marin county with an update on the crew lost at sea. good morning, bob. >> and unfortunately, four of them are still lost at sea, and now that the coast guard has called off the search, there's not much hope they're going to be found. the coast guard had been searching around the islands, which were about 30 miles outside the golden gate, the coast guard says they spent 30 hours this weekend searching an area that covers roughly 5,000 square miles for the four missing sailors who were onboard a boat called the low-speed chase. this is a 38-foot racing sailboat. you see it on the youtube video posted before the weekend. on saturday during a race

around, huge waves swamped the boat and slammed it into the rocks. several sailors knocked into the rough seas, including mark of belvedere. alan kahill is also missing, as well as two other men and one woman. >> now we've lost not only these amazing, beautiful human beings, but the top sailors in our entire county. like if anyone could've made it, they should have made it. it's just not right. >> you could see in this image from the coast guard that rescuers used a helicopter to retrieve at least one of the sailors. the survivors were cold and bruised. one broke his leg. the missing sailors were wearing life preservers and weather gear, but nothing to protect them from the ocean's very cold temperature. last night, about 400 people gathered, held a vigil at the san francisco yacht club at belvedere where some of the sailors are members.

reporting live here at vista point. and today marks one month since sierra lamar went missing. the 15-year-old disappeared on march 16th on her way to school. hundreds of volunteers have since spent the weeks combing through fields near lamar's home searching for any kind of clues. tonight, sierra's family holding a balloon release and prayer vigil at burnett elementary near where the searches have been organized. more volunteer searches are scheduled for wednesday, this saturday and coming sunday. it is 6:03 right now. and we now know a toddler found inside a parked car at the san jose shopping center is the daughter of two victims of an apparent murder/suicide. the little girl is now in protective custody after being found saturday at the gould center in south san jose. the girl was strapped into a car seat a few feet away from where her father shot the girl's mother and turned the gun on himself. so far, officers not released

the names of the gunman or the woman he killed. also this morning, two people in the hospital after a driver of a hot rod just lost control and plowed right into a building. san jose police say the car hit a pole, then crashed into a building sunday night. witnesses say the driver and passengers had just left a car show a few blocks away and were speeding down the street at about 80 miles per hour, that happened right before the crash. in the south bay, a man is recovering from emergency surgery after a bizarre accident of remote control airplane hit him. a boy fired up the plane friday afternoon in the sky park in morgan hill. you can see it off of 101. they say the plane went out of control hitting people nearby. one man went to the hospital after the propeller cut him above his knee. investigators say people who operate remote-controlled planes are supposed to have spotters, and in this case, it seems the boy did not have one. it could be the largest

strike of higher education teachers in u.s. history. the faculty association voting today on whether to walk the picket line at all 23 csu schools. "today in the bay's" christie smith is live at hayward at why the vote comes at a turbulent time for the school system. christie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, john. well, csu faculty are saying they're upset, fed up, frustrated. they're saying that they're being asked to take hit after hit while those at the top aren't. and, in fact, they're getting pay raises. some campus presidents to the tune of 10%. that according to the president of the california faculty association. librarians and counselors vote on a strike authorization starting today. the last one-day walkout was last november at two campuses. they've been without a contract since 2010. and one of the big issues they say is proposed salary freezes. the faculty wants more job stability. and this comes as you said the

csu system is facing awfully rough times losing nearly 1 billion in state funding since 2008. tuition hikes have set off clashes and demonstrations at trustee meetings in southern california. but a spokesperson says it's really premature to talk about a strike vote when they're still bargaining. the voting runs for about two weeks to authorize a two-day strike at the campuses. but they haven't decided which date they might choose. reporting live in hayward, christie smith, "today in the bay." soon oakland voters could have their say on term limits and rank choice voting. some council members are considering the measure for the november ballot that would limit council members and the city attorney to three consecutive four-year terms in office. another initiative for the ballot would repeal rank choice voting in mayoral and city attorney elections. instead, those races would go back to a general election early

in the year followed by a runoff election in november. rank choice voting was approved by voters back in 2006. but the system has faced harsh criticism since mayor quan beat perada. it has been rough all the way around as people sifting through rubble after a series of storms in the midwest. people waking up today to the remains of destruction from more than 100 tornadoes assaulted the central and southern plains over the weekend destroying just about everything in its path. five people were killed in woodward, oklahoma. three of those victims were a dad and his two children. we now know woodward's warning sirens were damaged and did not sound. and people there, of course, can't help but wonder if those alarms would've saved lives. >> i thought about that ever since i found out that we lost five people.

so i would think it would have helped, yes. >> we will have more on the storms and that cleanup coming in a live report from woodward coming up at 6:45. >> tragic to see the pictures. all right. much clearer in our neck of the woods. we want to check in with christina loren right now. >> high pressure making for a gorgeous start over the city of san francisco. we do have a little bit of wind out there this morning. and this is helping us keeping that fog from settling in. storm we're going to lose that wind and i believe we'll be dealing with thick fog tomorrow morning and the same goes for wednesday morning. but by thursday, friday, offshore flow making for completely fog free clear starts. even in san francisco. 50 degrees in san francisco right now you're at 50 in oakland. and 45 degrees down in sunniville. we're headed toward a really comfortable week especially if the wet weather kept you inside last week. the good news is, we'll be at 65 degrees noon inland today, and at the coast, even 59 degrees at noon rounding out the day with

brace yourselves for a commute change. the golden gate bridge will mark a milestone next month when it turns 75. and starting tonight, its southern approach doyle drive will be torn down. tonight through april 27th t caltrans crews shutting down the far right northbound lane of doyle drive. the lane will be closed weeknights and mornings between 8:00 p.m. and noon. then on weekend nights, it will be closed from 9:00 p.m. until noon. the demolition work is needed to prefair for full closure of doyle drive starting april 27th through april 30th. it's 6:10 right now. the senate is set to vote on the so-called buffett rule to raise taxes on millionaires. several business executives and assistants who say they agree with the principles of the buffett rule. the idea is if you make more than $1 million a year, you should pay at least the same percentage of your income in taxes as middle class families do. the buffett rule is named after

billionaire warren buffett who says he pays a lower tax rate than his secretary. a new study is finding a sharp increase in the number of overtime lawsuits. according to the national employment law project, suits went up 32%. found many people worked off the clock. jobs are misclassified as exempt from overtime requirements. smartphones and new technology tied some of the work during their personal time. it is 6:11 right now. the giants have to go through the rest of the season without the beard. brian wilson, but he's personally not giving up just yet. we'll tell you exactly why. plus seven-eleven going high-tech. the chain spent millions of dollars to upgrade their cash registers. and google hit with a fine that will take them seconds to pay off. wouldn't that be nice if it was the same when it came to your taxes? and for the latest news,

welcome back everybody on this monday morning. a live look at san francisco off the coast there. very nice. feels picturesque. hopefully the rest of the day will feel just like that. it's going to be a nice week, so enjoy, it is 6:14. it'll make it less convenient for minors to buy a pack of cigarettes or alcohol. seven-eleven has equipped all of the 1,600 locations in the state with high-tech equipment to check i.d.s. the clerk simply scans the customer's driver's license to verify the birth date stored in the card. the program is part of the company's battle against underage sales of alcohol and cigarettes.

retrial of former major league pitcher roger clemens, accused of lying under oath during congressional testimony back in 2008. prosecutors say he didn't tell the truth about never using performance-enhancing drugs in his career. last july, a district judge declared a mistrial. the first time prosecutors showed jurors inadmissible evidence. if found guilty, clemens faces the possibility of up to 21 months in prison. some heartbreaking news for san francisco fans and ms. christina loren in particular here. one of the most recognizable players down and out for the entire season, but guess what, he's staying positive. the beard says he will get a second opinion before undergoing surgery on his elbow. he already had that surgery one time before. during the surgery, doctors replace the ligament in the elbow from a tendon elsewhere in the body usually from your forearm, hamstring or even your foot. the giants wrapped up their

opening weekend at home. snapping a three-game winning streak. ryan making his season debut against the old team the pirates. he allowed just two runs and didn't get much help from the giants' offense. pirates took it by final 4-1. giants take on the phillies tonight. >> and i apologize, christina, for not getting you a tissue. that's heart breaking iff ining but the weather looks nice. >> so on that note -- and you know what else is great about that tommy johns surgery? a lot of times guys come back better than they were before. we can only hope that's the case with brian wilson. we love our giants. they'll be back out at at&t park. golden gate bridge, gorgeous shot here. and you can see we have a fair amount of cloud cover out there, that marine layer was able to push back in. but we're not talking about thick fog, reducing visibility at the surface this morning. tomorrow morning, that will be the case. wednesday morning, same thing, and by thursday, completely

clear start, temperatures skyrocketing as a result. 50s this morning in places like oakland and concord, we're at 47 degrees right now in san jose, we're going to climb to 66 by noon today. and we'll round out the day with plenty of 70s. 73 degrees in san jose, and 71 degrees in livermore. we stop the clock on your future cast at 5:00 a.m. tomorrow morning between 5:00 and 7:00 starting to see pretty thick fog developing over the bay area. and i wanted to step tough the picture just to show you we might see a stray shower or two. up in the north bay. sonoma county, you have a better chance than marin. as we head throughout wednesday into thursday, we stop the clock at 2:00 a.m. look at that, a completely clear start. high pressure really moving in, driving those winds offshore as a result, we're talking about the mid-80s on thursday. that's not even peak warmth. 84 in san jose, saturday, sunday, holding on to comfortable conditions. you can hit the beach with 73 degrees in places like san

francisco and santa cruz on saturday. then sunday, we're going to drop off your temperatures, bring the onshore flow back into the mix. but overall, still holding on to seasonal conditions for this time of year. let's check your drive at 6:18 with mike. >> the south bay looking all right, the freeways clearing from the accident. major intersection, car -- well, the roadways cleared. the cars clear from the roadway. we do have a signal that you might find roadwork going on there. minor delays. southbound 680 at scott creek road. the car off the roadway, now cleared from southbound 680 lanes. but you still have activity again on the shoulder there for a minor distraction. slower drive, 26 minutes out of the pass over toward the dublin interchange. a distraction as you're heading toward the jam at the dublin interchange. the earlier sig alert has cleared but enough to cause more of a backup as you're approaching that dublin interchange and heading over to

castro valley. back to you guys. well, employees at yahoo this morning will find out more about the future of their company. scott mcgrew joins us with more on that. >> good morning to you. a preview of those changes last week, he's restructuring yahoo to hopefully reinvigorate the company. but we will find out a lot more this week. tomorrow, yahoo reports its quarterly profits and that's when if things go as expected thompson will get on the phone with reporters for a conference call and answer some tough questions about what he intends to do with the ailing company now that he's cut 2,000 people from its payroll. over the weekend, we learned the government wants to fine google for not being more straightforward in washington's investigation into what data those google cars collect. google cars take more than pictures. they can also record the names of wi-fi networks. and years ago those same cars actually recorded some of the data on people's wi-fi networks

and that sparked the investigation. google says one guy added the computer code in those cars which caused them to take in too much information. but that one engineer will not cooperate with government investigators. the government case is a civil case. what you admit to in civil court can end up in criminal court. as for the fine, it's all of $25,000, which google should be able to afford. google reported it made $10 billion in revenue last quarter, back of the envelope math shows google makes about $25,000 every 20 seconds. otherwise this case is closed. the fcc will not be pursuing the matter any further. john and laura? >> thank you very much. 6:21. coming up, plenty to talk about in washington this morning after 11 secret service agents are accused of hiring prostitutes in colombia. we'll have the latest in a live report.

militant flashed a close-fist salute before shaking hands with prosecutors. then he said he does not recognize norwegian courts nor the judge's authority. the key issue is his mental health and will decide if he goes to prison or psychiatric care. we're learning more who is responsible for a violent string of attacks that left dozens dead in afghanistan. a militant arrested in the attack says they were carried out by a group of fighters with ties to the taliban and al qaeda. 36 insurf insurgents died in the attacks. 6:25 right now. president obama says he's reserving judgment as congress investigates embarrassing allegations that several secret service agents hired prostitutes during an official trip to colombia. tracie potts is following the story from washington this morning.

joining us live with the details. good morning. >> good morning, everyone. the investigation now also includes five service members who may have been involved now confined to their quarters while the u.s. tries to determine exactly what happened here. colombia police say the service members and the advance team brought prostitutes to the hotel last thursday before the president arrived for the survey. saying their members may have been involved. president obama saying he'll reserve judgment on this and that he'd be angry. that was the word, angry if, in fact, this is confirmed. the secret service in a statement said that it demands more from the employees and that those expectations are met and exceeded every day by the vast majority of the staff. congress also investigating the homeland security committee, the chair of that committee says they want details, than want to know procedures need to be changed and perhaps most importantly if there were any

outside. what a way to start a monday morning. it's april 16th, "today in the bay." good morning, everybody. thanks a lot for joining us, it is 6:31. i'm john kelly. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. oakland police are investigating six separate shootings within a ten-hour period over the weekend. the most serious injury happened around 11:15 last night on herbert guice way when a man was shot in the chest. paramedics rushed that man to a nearby hospital where he's in stable condition. a total of five people are injured. officers tell us they've made one arrest so far. well, search efforts to locate four missing boaters being suspended this morning. francisco yacht club in belvedere north of vista point where we're at right now. this as the coast guard last night at sunset called off the search for the missing sailors missing along the islands, which isn't a 30 miles outside the golden gate. coast guard spent 30 hours this weekend searching an area that covers roughly 5,000 square miles trying to find the four missing sailors who were onboard the low-speed chase the 38-foot long racing sailboat. on saturday during a race around, huge waves swamped the boat and slammed it into the rocks. several sailors were knocked in the rough seas including mark kasanan, alan kahill of tiburon is still missing as are two other men and one woman. of the missing sailors, they were wearing life preservers and weather gear, but nothing to protect them from the very cold temperatures.

reporting live in marin county, "today in the bay." 6:32. and today a second grade teacher from petaluma is dead shot and killed reportedly by her husband. the man shot his wife and then turned the gun on himself as she was walking out of an attorney's office on friday afternoon. the 43-year-old woman was pronounced dead just a few hours after the man. the pair had marital problems and some said they were in the process of getting a divorce. san francisco's unified school leaders will discuss bathroom breaks for the schools today. the board of education considering setting a district wide policy on when students can go to the bathroom. some parents accuse san francisco school leaders of restrictive bathroom policies. tonight's meeting set for 6:00. starting today, tens of thousands of cal state university faculty will be casting their ballots on whether to authorize a massive historic

strike. live in hayward this morning with a look at why they're upset and how a rolling strike could affect campuses. good morning. >> good morning to you. they're upset about a couple of things saying their contract negotiations have been going on for nearly two years and still no contract. they're saying they're being asked to make a number of sacrifices while those at the top are not and are, in fact, getting pay raises. the last faculty walkout was in november at two csu campuses. now members of the california faculty association representing professors, librarians, and counselors at 23 campuses will start voting today and over the next two weeks whether to authorize a two-day strike and coming at a tough time for the entire csu system that lost about $1 billion in state funding, cut admissions and hiked tuition. faculty is upset with proposed continued salary freezes cutting summer pay. the faculty wants more of a say they say in class sizes. but a csu spokesperson says this

strike talk is kind of premature since they're still in the bargaining process. voting starts at noon, goes on until april 27th. they haven't said, though, which days they might strike if this is approved. christie smith, "today in the bay." a canine officer right now suing city hall and the police department over the disciplinary action taken against him. david ray was the subject of an internal police investigation after an incident last july in which he and possibly other officers accessed pictures from a suspect's smartphone. the woman says ray deleted photos of her next to ray's patrol car that was not her, that was laura. they say they deleted photos from her smartphone and uploaded a partially naked photo from her phone to her facebook account. he said he made a mistake deleting those photos but accuses the city and police department of violating a law that guarantees certain rights to officers being investigated. >> had nothing to do with that -- >> wanted to clear that up.

6:35 -- one of the biggest retailers in america is closing two stores in the bay area. best buy says it will close the stores in east palo alto and pittsburg. back in march, the company announced it would shut down 50 stores across the country by the end of the summer. well, the sharks playoff series rolls back to san jose tonight and fans, guess what, you can get to the tank a little early for some fun. this afternoon, you can show your sharks pride at a street rally outside the hp pavilion starting at 4:30 this afternoon. now the sharks all tied up in that series against the st. louis blues, one win apiece. the puck dropping on ice tonight at 7:00. in the meantime, the boston marathon is underway right now.

runners are dealing with an extra obstacle this morning, the heat. it could reach 90 degrees during the marathon and organizers even offered first-time runners a chance to drop out and come back next year if need be, you know. a long, long run. >> the chicago marathon a couple years ago, it had crazy heat and people died. >> it's already 73 degrees we're told. >> i don't care if it's perfect weather, i can't make a marathon. it's going to be nicer, though? maybe i can run 1/2 mile? >> yeah, or in your case 1/2 mile, 1/4 mile, we don't want to overdo it, john kelley. you can see something very interesting. i love weather phenomena realtime data. this is not going to penetrate inland all the way this morning, however, it is cooling you downright at the coast and we're going to see a nice start as a result. 47 degrees in san jose this morning, comfortable in livermore at 46, you don't need that heavy jacket. as we head through noon, you're

welcome back, everyone. 6:42 right now. today marks five years since the deadliest rampage by a single gunman in u.s. history. a student named sung he jo opened fire at virginia tech killing 32 students and faculty before eventually turning that gun on himself. the shootings put national attention on how schools warn students about emergency laws about purchasing guns and mental health care for students. he'd previously been declared mentally ill. experts weighing in on kim jung-un's speech.

you don't need that heavy coat. you want to dress in layers because we're going to be in the 60s. almost 70 degrees, 62 in fremont, and 70s later on today. i'm going to send it back to you guys. >> all right, thank you very much. we're watching cleanup continue as we talked about in the midwest this morning after that string of deadly tornadoes moved through the area. i want to check in with jay gray who joins us live this morning in woodward, oklahoma, one of the hardest hit areas. it must be devastating to see in person, jay. >> hey there, laura. yeah, really overwhelming when you stop and think that all of this debris, the wood, the bricks, this is all people's lives scattered for miles here. and today a lot of these families will get their first chance to come back into these hardest hit neighborhoods and sift through all of this and try to find anything left of those lives before the storm. it's going to be difficult when you take a look around and see

what they're dealing with. and scenes looic this stretch out for miles not only here in oklahoma, but across the central and southern plains after that string of more than 100 tornadoes ripped across that area saturday into sunday. six people dead as a result of the storms, all six from here in woodward, oklahoma. three of those victims a single dad and two of his young children who were trying to ride out the storm in their mobile home. they died. so this small community dealing with that grief while they try and deal with all of the mess here. as they try and deal with getting back in some way to lives before the storm although they're beginning to realize now that's going to take quite some time, laura. >> i can't even imagine. thank you very much, jay, for that live report from oklahoma. >> let's check in now for a report out on the roads. what's happening on this monday morning? >> all right, you guys. we're going to look at the south bay first of all to the north of san jose, things are moving nicely up the peninsula. we have slowing here, capital expressway, north of 680, and 87

you the golden gate bridge. the southbound traffic moving nice across this bridge. that clear view from north bay and minor slowing through san rafael and right around highway 37, typical blips we see are there this morning. >> thank you very much. new this morning, oakland police looking into an outburst of violence. six separate shootings within a ten-hour period. the most serious injury happening at around 11:15 last night on herbert guice way. paramedics rushed that man to a nearby hospital where he's listed in stable condition. officers tell us only one arrest has been made so far. the coast guard is suspending search efforts toed for several missing boaters. bob redell is live with an update for us. >> good morning to you, laura. the search called off at sunset last night around the alands which is about 30 miles outside the golden gate. the coast guard spent a huge chunk of the weekend roughly 30 hours looking over an area that

covers roughly 5,000 square miles trying to find the four missing sailors. they were onboard the low-speed chase, a 38-foot racing sailboat. you can see it there on the youtube video posted before the weekend on saturday during a race, huge waves swamped the boat, slammed it into the rocks, several sailors knocked into the rough seas including mark of belvedere. the coast guard was able to recover his body. alan kahill of tiburon is still missing as our two other men and one woman. >> now we've lost not only these amazing, beautiful human beings, but the top sailors in our entire county. if anyone should've made it, they should have made it. it's just not right. >> in this image from the coast guard, you can see rescuers used a helicopter to pluck at least one of the survivors. survivors were cold, bruised,

one broke his leg. the missing sailors were wearing life preservers and weather gear, but nothing to protect them from the ocean's very cold temperatures. last night about 400 people held a vigil in belvedere north of where i'm at right now. and this is a club where some of these sailors were members. reporting live here in marin county, bob redell, "today in the bay." today sierra lamar's friends and family marking the one-month anniversary of her disappearance. she disappeared on her way to school. since then hundreds of volunteers spent weeks combing through fields in morgan hill and surrounding areas. tonight, sierra's family holding a balloon release and a prayer vigil at burnett elementary where the searches have been organized. more volunteer searches are scheduled for wednesday, saturday, and sunday. >> tragic ending for a little toddler found inside a parked car at a san jose shopping

center. she's a daughter of two victims of a murder/suicide. she's in protect iiive custody. the girl was strapped into a car seat a few feet away from the spot where her father shot the girl's mother and turned gun on himself. so far officers have not released the names of the woman or gunman, as well. and starting today, csu professors, librarians, coaches, and counselors voting on whether to authorize a strike at dozens of campuses. christie smith live at hayward with the latest on what they're fighting. for good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, john. they're upset and it's not unlike what we've heard before from students that in their opinion they keep taking hit after hit while those at the top don't and they've been getting raises. that according to the president of the california faculty association that the last faculty walkout was in november at two campuses. but starting today, 24,000 cal

state university employees as you said, professors, librarians, counselors, coaches from 23 campuses will vote on whether or not to authorize the two-day strike. they've been without a contract from 2010. they want more say in the classroom about sizes. they also don't like a proposed salary freeze at current levels. but a csu spokesman says it's too early to be talking about a strike when there's still bargaining. faculty is considering rolling strikes at each of the campuses. the vote goes on until april 27th. reporting live in hayward, christie smith, "today in the bay." 6:54 right now, golden gate bridge will mark a milestone when it turns 75. and starting tonight, the southern approach will be torn down. tonight through april 27th, caltrans crews are shutting down the far northbound lane of doyle drive. the lane will be closed weeknights and between 8:00 p.m.
