>> good morning, everybody, nothing to fear here, it is just about 4:31 on the nose. i'm john kelley. >> and i'm marla in this morning for laura garcia-cannon. >> good morning, welcome back, marla, we sure missed you. we've got fog out there this morning that could slow you down. right now, we have the densest of the fog up in the north bay. about 1/4 mile visibility up in santa rosa, but we expect these numbers to continuously fall throughout the next few hours. 70s, i'll let you know when the 80s return on my seven-day forecast. first, 4:31, let's check your drive with mike. >> it's pretty quiet, too quiet. just construction. it's highway 4 eastbound typical construction on the roadway hanging over from leverage. just one lane blocked and maybe

the off ramp eastbound. now discovery bay, we had wires down across highway 4 for the south, but those have cleared up in the last few minutes, that's good news. 680 north at 24, there's construction approaching that walnut creek interchange, as well. again, light traffic and no slowing there. but we'll watch. that should schedule to clear that fix and a smooth drive with a nice drive over any of your bay crossings for the bay area bridges, folks. back to you. >> thank you, mike. well, we start off this morning with new hope in the sierra lamar disappearance case. >> investigators are chasing down new leads today. "today in the bay's" bob redell is live in san jose with the latest developments. bob, good morning. >> good morning. and the sheriff's office is not being specific, but they do tell us they have new leads into the disappearance of sierra lamar, the 15-year-old morgan hill girl who has been missing for just over a month now. that this information came from crime lab analysis of items found in the search for sierra.

we have learned this new evidence could include a fingerprint, dna, or hair fiber. it's not clear if this came from her purse and clothes, her cell phone, or the used condoms and empty box of handcuffs. all items found in different areas near her home in morgan hill. this week, investigators are continuing their searches of local bodies of water, now using side scan sonar and divers if necessary. yesterday, a huge crowd of sierra's family and friends marked the one month since her disappearance by releasing hundreds of balloons, all of them pink, her favorite color. each one carrying handwritten messages of hope and prayers for her return. >> you know, sierra to be here right now would say, thank you for not giving up on me. >> reporter: the volunteer search will start up again tomorrow. this is being run by the klaas kids foundation. you'll want to show up at burnett elementary between 8:00 and 1:00.

if you are interested in participating, you must prove you're 18 years old. reporting live outside the santa clara county sheriff's office, "today in the bay." we are learning more now about the sailors lost at sea over the weekend. waves, washed the crew over the weekend. the coast guard rescued three people. five others are still missing and presumed dead. the victims were remembered with a moment of silence at monday night's giants game. alexis bush was a ball girl when barry bonds broke the home run record. sailors say alan kahill was a fixture at the san francisco yacht club in belvedere. >> known as irish alan, had a quick wit, good sense of humor. you could hear him down the docks. he was quite the character. but very, very good sailor. >> 43-year-old mark cassinan

grew up in belvedere. now while the community mourns, environmental officials say there are new concerns about how to remove the stranded boat without disturbing wildlife. >> where the boat is actually sitting is right off of our largest marine mammal area, which upwards of about 1,000 sea lions were hauled out there at the time. so it is pretty critical wildlife area right there. >> the u.s. fish and wildlife service says the breeding season is just getting started, which means birds will be arriving on the islands to nest. experts say they will consider the environmental impact of removing that boat before they try to salvage it. one man is dead, another hospitalized after a shooting near oakland mills college. the 19-year-old driver of a red camaro crashed about 4:30 yesterday afternoon.

police say he and his passenger were shot. the 21-year-old passenger died. witnesses say they heard 8 to 10 shots being fired. one witness says she had to duck to avoid the bullets. >> we heard gun shots. we were rear ended by the car behind us obviously. and then we both ducked. and kept driving, which is kind of scary because you can't see when you're ducking and driving at the same time. >> and that car, as you can see was struck by bullets, a light-colored mid-sized car was found at the scene. a man who allegedly kidnapped and assaulted a woman. a 44-year-old woman telling police she was kidnapped on lake shore boulevard near the lady of lords church. police say the victim left a friend's home around 3:00 a.m. sunday when somebody got out of a car, grabbed her, and forced her into his vehicle. the suspect being described as a

man in his 20s driving a dark-colored sedan. police have identified a man and woman killed in an apparent murder/suicide steps away from their 17-month-old daughter. police say 32-year-old winn shot his ex-girlfriend and then himself outside a san jose strip mall saturday. the baby was in the backseat of her father's car during the shooting and was not hurt. right now, that little girl is in child protective services until workers can find a family member to take custody. well, weekend parking in san francisco might be getting a little more expensive. the city's municipal transit agency is expected to approve a plan to begin enforcing parking meters on sunday from noon until 6:00 p.m. right now meter parking is free on sundays. the city says all meter money will add up to almost $2 million. the board is also looking at a proposal to raise the price of traffic tickets by $5.

>> marla, the cold hard reality, it is tax day. and if you waited until the last minute to file, you might be able to get extra time. uncle sam will grant you a six-month extension, but you must make the request by midnight tonight. now, of course, you still have to pay your taxes and the bill by today's deadline. late payments will incur interest, charges, and fees, in addition to what you already owe. and with taxes sometimes come protests. a group of wealthy professionals called tax us will rally today at san francisco's city hall. they're calling on congress to support president obama's buffett rule which would raise taxes for the wealthiest americans. occupy oakland will also take action today by rallying in solidarity with postal workers facing layoff. >> and you know no doubt the post offices are going to be packed with people. >> slammed. >> protaxinators. >> forget about it. just do it online. it's really, really easy.

good morning to you. here, we're in the silicon valley, we should know about that. 54 degrees in oakland, 50 in livermore, 52 in san jose. throughout the morning hours, we are going to see some of that fog out there, especially right by the coast. half moon bay, pacifica, the usual suspects, yeah, expect that patchy fog. and we could see drizzle throughout the morning hours. a few more clouds today even than we saw yesterday afternoon. you saw the clouds increase, same deal today. but hey, we're still talking about the 70s and the 80s are in that forecast. get to that seven-day in a moment. 65 degrees by about noon. i think noon is when we're going to see the most sunshine. if you want to get outdoors, enjoy that vitamin d, you'll get really good sunshine about 10:00 and 2:00, and 4:00 p.m., the clouds roll back in, 67 degrees, comfortable conditions. not looking at as much sunshine as we're projecting in the near future. 80s, full-on sunshine. i'll let you know when the seven-day outlook.

advancing pushing the dow higher on the back of a better than expected report on retail sales. however, apple took a big bite out of the nasdaq, the stock falling for five straight days, losing nearly 10% after hitting $644 just a week ago. apple, of course, accounts for 12% of the nasdaq index. meantime, there are reports that mac and ipad sales may be disappointing. apple reporting earnings next week. the asian markets were lower overnight, european markets are higher. and here in the u.s., we're going to get data on housing and industrial production. also coca-cola, johnson & johnson and goldman sachs reporting earnings this morning. we saw the dow rise 71 points yesterday to 12,921, the nasdaq losing 22 to close at 2,988. and the government says the gas prices fell nearly 2 cents in the past week to a national average of $3.92 a gallon. that's the biggest drop in four months and combined with the small decline the previous week, the biggest two-week move since mid december. gas prices are up 50 cents or

16% since late january. a bunch of retailers are doing some things to try to make tax day better. including giving out freebies to relieve the anxiety. sonic is selling fountain drinks and slushies at half price all day long. chil chili's is giving a free dessert or entree. cinnibon is handing out two free bites this evening. you can bet i'll be over there. >> who is going to turn down that? not me. >> wow, cinnabons, curly fries. i don't care anymore, i'm going to go eat the free stuff. and also the weather looks nice to go along with this tax day. >> yeah, to wait in line for your two bites. tip my hat to you, jackie.

i'm not going to do that. we've got really good-looking conditions for the second half of the day. it's on the chilly side in places like santa cruz. but santa cruz, 70 degrees later on today. how does that sound? you can get a tan finally. now, the first part of the day will see the most sunshine. i think between about 10:00 and 2:00, you're going to get more sun than clouds. and the second half of the day, the clouds will increase. intervals of clouds throughout the evening hours and then by tonight, mostly cloudy conditions. take a look at your noon readings. 66 degrees in san jose at noon, 66 in livermore, and 68 degrees as you break for lunch in antioch. we're going to ride out the day with plenty of 70s just like yesterday. the biggest difference between today and yesterday will be more cloud cover for the second half of the day. and we could see a stray shower up in the north bay. that is possible. a better chance for that in sonoma county. high pressure's fully in control. what's going to happen is from time to time, some of those clouds will spill into the bay area. and more importantly, we could see a stray shower up in sonoma

county. that chance, not that great at about 10%. however, i want to let you know about everything that could happen throughout the day today. sun and clouds, and then that warming trend kicks into high gear. take a look at where your temperatures are headed. 85 degrees in san jose on friday. gilroy, morgan hill, 90s certainly possible. like summer really quickly. and we'll hold on to the mid-80s for the first part of your weekend, as well. hit the beach on saturday, you can do so, pacifica's going to be comfortable. about 70 degrees there on saturday. it'll be about 78 degrees in santa cruz on saturday. can't beat that, back to you guys. well, little history in the making here. nasa has one final mission for one of the oldest spacecraft. the space shuttle discovery taking off moments ago. discovery catching a ride on top of a modified 47 jumbo jet, that's a 747 jumbo jet.

the shuttle flying to virginia to become a permanent display at the smithsonian's nearby hangar. discovery will be on display for the public starts on tuesday. very cool. well, it's no surprise, kids getting a little tech savvy at a young age. but the question is, is it hurting them? >> some are so dialed in, they're not learning how to connect emotionally. with cell phones, instant messaging, and e-mail, teenagers are actually learning to be distracted. and that can hurt their ability to interact with others face-to-face. >> the brain gets so used to distraction, so used to looking where it shouldn't that they can't ever look where they should. >> experts say key emotional development happens for girls between ages 8 and 12 during face-to-face encounters. but when kids are distracted, they don't learn how to read and process emotions. >> i'm all for high-tech, but also all for face-to-face, personal interaction. i like it. it is 4:50 right now.

welcome back, everybody. the good news, the sharks were back at their house for game three of the playoffs against the blues. the bad news, home ice advantage not helping the cause. a shot in the second period put st. louis up 3-1. then in the third period, another power play by the blues. a goal, st. louis up 4-1. the sharks, well, yeah, tried to make a comeback. scoring with a few seconds left in the game. it was not enough. blues skate to the 4-3 victory, take a 2-1 lead in that series, game four set for thursday. making a third start of the season, the first two bummers. unfortunately, so was this one. the phillies go up 4-0 in that first inning.
