this friday, april 20th, going to be a warm one. this is "today in the bay." good morning to you and thanks so much for joining us, 5:00 right now, and i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm marla tellez. well, today marks five weeks since sierra lamar disappeared and sheriff deputies and community volunteers are not giving up their search. maryann favro is live where they're going to be act at it tomorrow. maryann, good morning. >> good morning to you, marla. investigators will be out searching the area and following up on leads as they search for sierra lamar. but also tomorrow, they're going to be gearing up for a massive search that will start at 9:00 a.m. and end at sunset. now a total of 90 search and rescue members from santa clara county, san mateo county, santa

cruz, and marin counties will comb areas of morgan hill, gilroy, and san martin tomorrow. search and rescue workers specifically trained to scour some of the rough esther rain and dogs trained to detect human remains will also be out in this area. in another development, sheriff deputies confirmed that sierra lamar's twitter account was hacked several times in the past two weeks. and have leads on the other hacking incident. volunteers from the community are also going to be out here at burnett elementary school. they will be searching on both saturday and sunday and the organizers have been using an automated telephone system to get the word out and generate more volunteers. reporting live in morgan hill, maryann favro. "today in the bay." police are still searching for a 15-year-old north bay girl that disappeared last saturday. the father of charlotte ana said she left on a green mountain

bike wearing a green jacket carrying a backpack. she may have been headed for the state park. she hasn't been seen since and none of her friends have heard from her. the girl may have been depressed. we now know a woman shot and killed by her estranged husband in petaluma had unsuccessfully tried to get a restraining order on him just one week before that killing. petaluma police had been called out to deal with kevin and kim conover five times over the past year according to the chronicle. officers investigative reports of domestic violence, but no one was arrested. police say kevin conover shot his wife and turned the gun on himself on sunday. 5:02, ross mirkarimi is scheduled to be back in court this morning trying to overturn his job suspension. christie smith live from san francisco where a judge is expected to rule on a request that the official misconduct case against him be thrown out. good morning.

>> reporter: good morning to you, laura, and happy friday. so far ross mirkarimi's legal challenges haven't amounted to a whole lot. just yesterday, a judge issued a tentative ruling saying so far he sees no compelling reason to stop ed lee's efforts to remove ross mirkarimi from office for a official misconduct. but that ruling isn't final until a hearing a little bit later this morning. mirkarimi's attorneys are trying to show that he may have overstepped his bounds in suspending the sheriff. mirkarimi is saying he pleaded guilty to a non-violent misdemeanor of false imprisonment keeping his wife in the car during a new year's day argument where she ended up with a bruise. and then there's the issue of the incident that occurred before he was sworn in officially and didn't relate to his duties as sheriff. here's what his attorneys said he would like to see now. >> put an end to this -- to this

massive waste of taxpayer resources and let sheriff mirkarimi get back to doing the job he was elected to do. >> reporter: now the deputy city attorney said outside of court it's certainly understandable that mirkarimi is trying to thwart the proceedings adding she thinks he's in danger, in jeopardy of removal. this is expected to go before an ethics commission on monday who will then make a recommendation of the board -- to the board of supervisors who will then ultimately decide his fate. reporting live in san francisco, christie smith, "today in the bay." a north bay yacht club will dedicate tonight's race to five crew members now believed dead after they were swept overboard. one body was recovered, but four crew members are still missing. the survivors say the low-speed chase was hit broadside by a large wave that knocked some of the sailors into the sea. the boat later washed up on the rocks on the east side. the yacht club of tiburon will hold a moment of silence one

hit the beach, we'll talk about which beaches will be the warmest coming up. and this isn't even the warmest day in the extended period. two more warmer days to get through. i'll talk about that coming up, 5:06. first, let's get you out that front door with mike. >> we'll take you over here toward eastbound 80. that's the counter commute direction for your east shore freeway. construction, highway 4, the off ramp, and coming sky way, the onramp. crews might be moving now, but so far, chp hasn't given us the all clear there. construction also on the lower deck of the bay bridge. and you see those yellow speed indicators, turning below 50 as you're approaching from the lower deck. crews may be moving, but you have a couple of lanes blocked for a little while there. exclamation point past the coliseum. let's show you. the road crews should be moving there, as well, northbound from high street. you see the flashing sign is gone there. and we do have construction up to fruitville. expect a little slowing up to downtown. high street, the bright lights there, that's the surface street, but the off ramp is

and this is a live look outside in the south bay this morning. traffic picking up just a bit. maybe folks getting an early jump on the workday, early jump on the weekend. 5:11 right now. well, there's a buzz in the air all over the bay area, but beekeepers say there's no reason to worry. some beekeepers say they're seeing a spike in the number of swarms this year. mostly because of late rain followed by sunshine and blooming plants. well, hot weather this weekend means the mosquitos aren't too far behind. >> better grab the bug spray unless your the scientist in charge of stopping them, then you can roll up your sleeves and let them bite. bob redell explains. >> they are biting. >> once bitten, twice shy, right? >> they're just using you.

the next few days, temperatures keep on climbing and we have rain in the forecast. we're going to take you on another roller coaster ride. this morning, very interesting set-up here at 5:14. we've got a good amount of fog on the golden gate bridge. but this is the only area where we're noticing the fog over the open water. elsewhere, it's completely clear this morning and as a result, temperatures are mild in san francisco at 56 degrees. you're at 57 in navato and 58 two degrees away from 60 in san jose. which means throughout the morning because it is mainly clear once that sun comes out, we're going to start climbing immediately. temperatures winding up 5 to 8 degrees warmer than yesterday. and then we've got beach weather ahead for the weekend. really good-looking days. saturday and sunday for santa cruz. 79 degrees by noon today, 83 degrees getting home from work, getting ready to enjoy that weekend. and if you can hit the beach today, warmest time of the day is about 3:00 p.m. pacifica about 74 degrees. cannot beat that by the water. half-moon bay, 72 degrees with winds out of the west at 15 to

20 miles per hour keeping things comfortable. and santa cruz, 80 degrees today. you can imagine highway 17 getting jam packed saturday and sunday.rix now come monday, things start to change. temps are going to tumble as an area of low pressure moves late monday into tuesday. that's going to bring our temperatures down and provide some rain as we head through thursday. and this is actually looking like a pretty juicy system for this time of year, potentially measuring another 1/2 inch here in san jose. right now, let's check your drive. you won't want any problems on a friday. >> i'll point them out, but you know what? we have an easy flow right now. through the south bay, very light volume of traffic. pretty much everywhere and registering at the limit. in fact, actually, couple of seconds ago, i saw this on 80, for highway 87. not likely the case and i'm glad it went back down to 62. chp is watching for you, as well. 101 moves smoothly -- lower bay shore there, there's 280, no disturbances and construction not a factor across the dumbo.

we'll go further north and get a live look at the golden gate bridge. the fog that christina pointed out a couple of minutes ago. right here is still there south of the south tower. to the north bay, further north in san rafael. this is the san rafael bridge. this is the san mateo bridge. it shows a little bit of glow to the lights, as well. couple of key spots over the water. getting back to the maps, we'll show you what things are like around the east bay. the lower deck of the bay bridge, a little slowing through the construction zone, that's about it. and the east shore freeway moves smoothly and no problems on the approach coming out of the maze. antioch, livermore, over the next 20 minutes, we'll show them to you guysme. back to you. a pair of bay area ipos a day after yet another. thursday's was spectacular and really sets the tone for today. >> it really does, marla. it shouldn't, each company should stand on its own. an investor shouldn't say darn,

i didn't get in on yesterday's rocket ship, i'll get in on the next one. you should examine every company on its merits. doing that is up to you. i can give you some examples. it's set to sell in the nasdaq. gary steele seen on another show. proofpoint does security software and hardware servers basically. proofpoint will trade under pfpte. a little bit more than an hour on the nasdaq. the other bay area stock making debut today infoblox describes itself as a network automation company. they'll be over on the nyse. now marla, you mentioned yesterday's ipo, splunk, holy cow. they mine big data. the stock didn't go down, it was a rocket. doubling in the first day of trading. microsoft was the latest

tech company to report earnings. jackie continues our coverage. good morning, jackie. >> good morning, scott. well, the futures they're slightly higher this morning. and as you said, microsoft could be providing an early boost for the market as it posted better than expected earnings last night as sales of windows held up in a sluggish pc market. now, we did see stocks dropping on thursday. investors focused on disappointing housing and manufacturing data and continued worries about the debt crisis overshadowing some of the good earnings reports. european markets were a touch lower, and here in the u.s., no economic data today, but we are watching for more earnings from ge and mcdonald's. the dow losing 68 points, the nasdaq falling 23 points to 3,007. mortgage rates have ticked up slightly in the past week, but remain relatively low as inflation is staying in check. freddie mac says the average rate on a 30-year fixed loan rose to 3.9% from 3.88% last week. that rate was nearly a point

higher at this time last year. and finally, your strawberry frappachino will no longer have a splash of bug in it. starbucks is ditching the red dye it uses to make the drinks and pastries after a public outcry over a key ingredient in that dye. it's made with crushed insects from mexico. it's going to replace the dye that one that uses tomato extract. >> thank you very much. >> tomatoes in your frappachino as opposed to bugs. >> i prefer tomatoes. >> well, you know, let's call the whole thing off then. >> there you go. a good comeback. 5:19 right now. now that tax day has come and gone, they say it's time to fire up that shredder. according to kip linger magazine, they say you can get rid of anything three years and older. some say hold on to the actual tax return forms a little longer, however. >> you may want to keep it for

search, but no sign of sierra lamar. today marks five weeks since the 15-year-old disappeared. sheriff deputies and community volunteers are not giving up their search. maryann, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. no, marla, they are certainly not giving up their search. in fact, 90 search and rescue members plan to be out in morgan hill tomorrow starting at 9:00 a.m. and they are also going to be scouring areas of san benito and gilroy. these deputies are coming from all over the bay area. what's new about this search is that this time teens specifically trained to get into a remote terrain are joining the search efforts. these are men and women who have cross-trained to search in wilderness areas. also dogs trained to detect human remains will also join in the search efforts. san francisco 49er linebacker will also be out at the search on saturday to lend his support to deputies. in addition to the search effort by the sheriff deputies,

community volunteers are also going to be out here tomorrow morning starting at 9:00 and the volunteers will be out here as well on sunday the entire day. now, even if you can't get out here and search volunteers say they still need help, they need poison oak lotion and bug spray. reporting live in morgan hill, maryann favro, "today in the bay." 5:31. this morning, oakland city attorneys will be back in court to crack down on hotels and motels accused of being hot beds of prostitution and child sex trafficking. city is suing to shut down the economy inn near lake merritt and the national lodge on international boulevard. last october, an alameda county superior court judge ordered injunctions against both motels requiring the owners to install security cameras so that police can monitor those properties. city attorney wants both motels closed for at least a year. 5:31. suspended san francisco sheriff ross mirkarimi is headed back to

court this morning this time as part of his legal battle to keep his job. "today in the bay's" christie smith is live in san francisco where mirkarimi will ask a judge to toss out those charges of official misconduct. christie, good morning. >> good morning to you, marla. well, so far these legal challenges by ross mirkarimi haven't really swayed the judge who already issued a tentative ruling basically denying his bid to undo the suspension or even get a valerie while he fights it. he also denied mirkarimi's request to remove city attorney dennis herrera from the case citing a conflict of interest. the ruling was to stop ed lee's efforts to remove mirkarimi from office. the misconduct stems from an incident new year's day with his wife ileana lopez. she ended up with a bruised arm. he maintains he pled guilty to a

misdemeanor charge. his attorneys are arguing that lee may have overstepped his bounds and mirkarimi wasn't even sworn in yet at the time. the deputy city attorney says she thinks everything will proceed. >> you know, i think there are very serious issues regarding his conduct that he's going to have to answer for before the ethics commission and board of supervisors. and i don't think the court is going to decide that process cannot continue. i think the court's going to see the need for it. >> reporter: now as she was talking about there, mirkarimi is awaiting a hearing on the misconduct charges. what they'll do is make a recommendation to the board of supervisors who will then ultimately decide whether or not to remove them from office. reporting live in san francisco, christie smith, "today in the bay." 5:33. pg & e is facing nearly $20 million in fines for safety lapses in east bay. the california public utilities commission is upholding a nearly $17 million in penalties against

utility for failing to inspect contra costa county pipelines for gas leaks. paying a fine for problems with the recordkeeping. this is the first time the cpuc has been able to penalize pg & e without seeking approval first from the full safety commission. the department was given more power to crack down on pg & e in december more than a year after eight people were killed and 38 homes destroyed in a pipeline explosion in san bruno. >> within the next few hours, talk of a possible takeover could take off at american airlines. the company's three major unions are now set to back a bid for a merger by rival u.s. airways. the move would amount to a hostile takeover of american by an airline that has tried and failed to merge before. with larger airlines. united and delta. >> u.s. airways has its own union employees. who are not going to want to see the american employees

westbound speeds in the 30s but look at the blips on the eastbound side, as well. construction cleared about 20 minutes ago, but there may be some distraction. we'll watch that because it's unexpected. interstate 580 westbound, 15-minute drive and continued for the typical build westbound out of the altamont pass. eastbound is going to be the issue later on this afternoon as some folks head over the area toward the central valley. we're looking west toward castro valley. a smooth drive, you're close to the limit there, 238, no problems right now the only issue for 92, a little blip showing up westbound over the san mateo hills and that's our traditional friend that shows up now. we'll track that to make sure it's the case. there's that patch of fog christina was talking about at the golden gate bridge. no problem because of the light volume of traffic. lower your speeds a bit, back to you. >> thanks, mike. well, sometimes you have to fight tooth and nail to get a parking spot in san francisco, but usually not literally.

trayvon martin asks for bail while he waits on trial. the neighborhood watch rovoluntr says he killed the teen back in february but he was only charged nine days ago. his attorney says several safe locations have been secured for zimmerman should he be released. we now know the names of the two secret service supervisors forced out during the investigation into the secret service sex scandal in colombia. "today in the bay's" tracie potts joins us with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: marla, good morning. the attorney says whoever leaked those names probably broke the law. but we do now know that david cheney and greg stokes are two of the three dismissed from the agency. cheney was actually forced to retire. stokes was fired for cause his attorney says he will defend himself vigorously. there is an appeals process for that. the third whose name we don't have actually resigned, but lawmakers are telling us that

this investigation. thank you. 5:42. a special group of cyclists are headed to the white house. president obama will welcome the wounded warrior project soldier ride this afternoon. soldier ride is four days of cycling for veterans of all abilities. they raise awareness and money for wounded warriors who are battling physical and psychological damages of war. this weekend is the washington, d.c. event. there are also soldier rides in 11 other u.s. cities. a former military base north of monterey will become the country's newest national monument. today, president obama will make ft. ord the second national monument since becoming president. it sits along the ocean front on highway 1. about 14,000 acres of land at the fort will be included in the monument. the cal state monterey campus will not be included. >> might be a good day to head to the coast. i want to check the forecast with christina. >> great day because tomorrow and sunday those beaches will be jam packed.

monday, tuesday, and wednesday. the jet stream takes a dip and brings in more rain. our deficit's at about 45% here in san jose. however, because of the last three systems that came through, we were able to take a very sizable chunk out of that deficit. so we're at about 70% of average now up in the north bay, for example. we'll talk more about that coming up and how much rain we're expecting for today. stay hydrated in fairfield, 88 degrees, 85 for livermore, and 86 right here in san jose, up to 90, and then tomorrow, 87, holding on to the upper 80s for the second half of your weekend. temps tumble on monday, nice start on tuesday, then the rain returns come thursday. maybe 1/2 inch here in san jose. let's talk to mike. another muscle shirt man about your drive. >> oh, in the past, yes. now, the muscle shirt's a little lower because the muscles are a little lower. we're looking at the south bay speaking of lower. someone reported talking around highway 87 downtown right around the off ramps, chp talking to that person.

we also have a stall reported, 85 at 87, the transition. but all lanes are open. those are the only two issues for the south bay and no slowing. so we'll move on, we'll keep our eyes on things there. i'll do that for you. looking at the lower bay shore, 101 and 280 moving smoothly across the water. highway 84, the dumbarton bridge hasn't had any problems and the construction cleared earlier this morning. looking over on the east bay as you cross over. smoothly past the coliseum. might be a distraction past the scene. but a smooth drive as that volume really starting to kick in now heading into downtown. we'll show you what the speed sensors are looking like. all approaches looking nicely. smooth drive across from the north bay, san rafael moving very smoothly. close to 55 and that's the limit for the bridge there. we do have construction sticking around. highway 4, the off ramp there and eastbound 80 and eastbound

80, the onramp is closed as an alternate. you'll go over to highway 4. and jump on there a little bit longer, but it's all clear right now, guys. back to you. >> thank you very much. it may soon get easier to get into homeless shelters. right now the homeless have to wait in line for hours in san francisco without a guarantee of a bed. about 125 people are turned away every night. but now, mayor ed lee is floating the idea of letting them call or text in a reservation request. i guess if the homeless have cell phones. they'll be notified in advance if there is a bed available. 5:47. a plan to make parking structures safer installing in san francisco. it could take months until the board of supervisors approve the bill -- the lots would also have to have a security plan and an employee on site until 3:00 in the morning. the city's public safety committee is considering the bill before sending it to the full board.

the buildings could be getting taller in menlo park. new plans out to transform the downtown and the corridor. pictures of the proposed r changes. the plans include more than 600 new homes, buildings up to five stories high, shops, restaurants, and office space. planni commission is set to review an environmental impact report on the project at the end of the month before passing it on to the city council. the year-long fight to save endangered species at a local golf course could end today. the park is owned by san francisco, but located on the san mateo county coast. lawn mowing at the park endangers the california red-legged frog and the san francisco guarder snake. the judge will hear arguments, golf could be curtailed or stopped altogether at sharp park. san jose state will officially inaugurate its 20th president today.

mohammed kaume will be sworn in at 5:30 this morning more than nine months after taking over as the school's president. before taking the reigns, he served at president of cal state east bay. kaume grew up in afghanistan. well, there is concern today about a goose that was apparently shot with an arrow. it was first spotted last friday near a school just outside of sacramento. take a look at this. animal control says the arrow is not preventing the goose from moving as you can see here. and that eventually the arrow would disintegrate. but people who live near the park think the arrow may be plastic and it could kill the bird. >> i'm sure it was a hunter or something like that, but it wasn't a fatal shot and now the poor animal has to, you know, live with it. >> we need to catch it and get the arrow out of it. >> planning to turn the matter over to fish and game. >> poor thing.

with mike. the time now is 5:52. drivers on bay area freeways may have to slow down to speed up air quality improvements. reducing the 65-mile-an-hour speed limit to 55 is part of an extensive plan by two government groups to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. the goal is a 15% reduction by 2035. environmentalists say changing the speed limit by 10 miles per hour can reduce emissions by 6% or the equivalent of taking 300,000 cars off the road. the plan could come up for a vote next year. okay. there are baby swings and then there are the sort of baby swings that get scott mcgrew's approval for gadget friday. let's see this one. >> the most important tool in a brand new parents' tool kit is the electric baby swing. don't get the crank kind. you want this thing to run forever. whatever reason, babies quiet down when you move them around. the theory i suppose being it simulates the motion of the mother which breaks down when you think about a baby swing
