and i'm christina loren live in the nbc bay area weather center. we've got rain on the way two days of warmth and sunshine first. lots to talk about in the full forecast coming up. and the slowdown has kicked in for 580 as some of your usual suspects. what you might not know about, though, coming up. good morning, everybody. thanks for being with us. it's 6:00, i'm marla tellez in for laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm john kelley. police right now looking for a would be robber who had its plan foiled by a gas station employee in oakland. this all happened around 9:45 last night at the station near coliseum way. a woman walked in, pulled out a gun, and demanded so money there. the employee wrestled that gun away from the woman. she ran away but did not get away with any money. a driver arrested for a dui. okay. are we changing stories there? >> yeah.

>> hang with us, ladies and gentlemen. >> where are we going from here? we're going to go to oakland. okay. in just a few hours, students will return to classes at oikos university in oakland. it was three weeks ago today that a gunman went on a rampage killing six students and a staffer on campus. "today in the bay" is live with the details on why some students will not be back today. stephanie, good morning. >> reporter: marla, good morning to you. it was just about two weeks ago when oikos hosted a memorial and it was right here on the front lawn. we're actually at the front entrance. you see a table they had prepared with the pictures of the seven victims. it was then that school leaders told me they were in the talks to reopen the school as soon as possible. today all students are welcome to return to classes. but nursing students are not coming back to this oakland campus. one of them is a survivor of

being shot in the arm. she told a local newspaper she was not going to return to class if she had to be back in this building. we spoke with a neuropsychologist who said most of the 100 students have been suffering some form of post traumatic stress by replaying the events of the day over and over again. and the president of oikos, actually says there may be a bigger group of students here tomorrow morning for an open house type of event. the school should have counselors on hand here for those who are coming back. but once again, the nursing students will not be coming back to this campus. they're set to head to unitech college in fremont. as for the suspect, one goh, he's accused of shooting and killing six students and one reception. he's actually due back in court a week from today where he may enter a plea. live in oakland this morning, "today in the bay." suspended sheriff ross mirkarimi back at it today trying to save his political career.

christie smith live in san francisco with more on the ethics commission meeting this morning that could hold his fate. christie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, john. a number of points in court leading up to this to try to save his job, like the fact he wasn't even sworn in yet as sheriff when this accident occurred. but a judge wasn't moved by that last week. what's going to happen today is that the matter moves to city hall before an ethics commission where this moves forward, the city's efforts to oust him as sheriff. mayor ed lee suspended mirkarimi without pay after he pleaded guilty last month to a misdemeanor of unlawful imprisonment involving an altercation with his wife. the hearing isn't expected with whole lot of fireworks, more like written briefs. but there could be some testimony too that we don't know if he will be here to testify. the commission makes a recommendation then to the board of supervisors. and mirkarimi spoke with us

earlier about that leg of the process. >> there are some protections in place in that you do have to get 3/4 of the members of the board to vote in favor of the removal before that can occur. but it says nothing about whether or not we even get to address the board. >> now, as he was talking about there, 9 out of 11 supervisors would have to agree for mirkarimi to ultimately be removed from office. but mirkarimi's attorney tells us he does have one last chance at the end to appeal if it goes that way. reporting live in san francisco, christy smith, "today in the bay." well, the man accused of murdering trayvon martin is out of jail and in a secret location this morning. george zimmerman left a florida jail after posting $150,000 bail just after midnight in florida. sheriff deputies say zimmerman is wearing a gps monitoring bracelet that provides realtime information on his location. it'll work anywhere in the u.s.

he is likely outside of florida. zimmerman is accused of killing martin back in february. pg & e fighting a lawsuit from survivors of the deadly explosion of a payout that could reach billions of dollars. pg & e claiming the blast was an accident and there's no evidence of wrong doing. hundreds of victims are suing the utility in civil court seeking punitive damages in addition to millions in compensation for lost homes and loved ones. the civil trial is set for july. meantime, a 1989 pg & e memo show the san bruno pipeline had a history of bad welds. the recent undiscovered documents detail an investigation into a 1988 leak about nine miles south of the san bruno blast. that memo concluded it was likely caused by a defective

weld, the very same problem investigators say contributed to the san bruno explosion. pg & e says the findings were not definitive and did not require to test the entire 51-mile pipeline. a man in critical condition after being shot during a home invasion robbery attempt. police say two armed men enter a home on donna maria way near west 3rd street friday night demanding money and marijuana. during the struggle, the 23-year-old resident was shot. both robbers got away. a reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest. >> it is 6:06 right now. the federal government launching an investigation into 5,000 school buses after several cases of engine problems. and at least three of them, oil lines failed because the buses suddenly stalled. in one case, a bus was traveling 55 miles an hour with a full load of students when the engine started smoking and abruptly quit. the problems all stem from 2008 model buses with the brand

international ce. the investigation may ultimately lead to a recall. well, protecting kids from the dangers that lurk online. that's what police in fremont hope to do a little bit later today. teens and parents are invited to a seminar on cyber bullies and digital safety. police say as the internet and technology have evolved, so have the means to abuse them. tonight, officers want to teach people how to not become victims of bullies and predators. the free seminar is from 6:00 to 8:00 tonight at washington hospital on mowry avenue. and after a weekend of hot sun and all kinds of heat, looks like we're getting some rain, ms. loren. >> yeah, the wild spring ride continues as we head through this week. good morning to you, 58 degrees in sunnyvale, 56 in livermore and comfortable 57 degrees here in san jose. a good-looking day. now the winds are starting to drop off a little bit. but for the most part, the low clouds are still hovering above your local freeways and roads.

antonio road, we do have northbound 101 with one lane blocked. your left lane also the fast one. stay over to your right as you're passing through palo alto, but no slowing there for that reading at 65. and the south bay itself moves nicely. the northbound routes also on pretty good speeds but that blip extended from 680 up to 880 as the volume increases. 85 showing change more cars hitting the road. right now looking pretty light but the metering lights on just to the left of your screen. the truck coming on to the onramp. causing slowing and getting on to the freeway, as well. well, if you're heading to the b.a.r.t. station this morning, you want to give yourself more time to find a parking spot. the service parking lot on the north side of the station is closed. you can park at the 1,500 space station parking garage next to the old lot or the pleasanton lot on the south side of 580. it clears the way for a condo project. occupy protesters are

threatening to shut down the golden gate bridge next month. unions are planning to picket may 1st to protest contract negotiations with the bridge district. if any of those unions go on strike, the occupy movement says it will shut down the bridge in a show of solidarity. the bridge district is already warning commuters that could lead to traffic delays. some serious delays. 6:10 now. well, some sunny days before the midweek rain christina was talking about. good news for road crews in san francisco. they plan to start resurfacing part of the bridge near at&t park. the northbound lanes will be closed this week so crews can apply an anti-skid coating to that bridge. the closure was supposed to happen earlier this month but had to be rescheduled because of rain. the northbound closure will begin this morning and last through friday. and marla, as we get ready for rain out here, the giants playing two out of new york today because of rain. yeah, rain postponing yesterday's game against the mets. we'll get a double-header this afternoon. game one scheduled to start at

welcome back, everybody. we'll give you a live look at the golden gate bridge. might be a little bit of fog out there making those lights kind of spray into the mist. the sun starting to peak up. it's still early, christina loren will tell you about rain on the way. mike will see it on the traffic. it is 6:14. new this morning, nato says a bombing killed two of its troops in eastern afghanistan. the report does not say what country these soldiers are from. nato usually lets member nations announce casualties. now most of the international troops in that part of afghanistan are american. but there are members from other

countries, as well. north korea is threatening to reduce south korea's government to ashes. north korea promised to wage a sacred war against the south. now it's promising to launch unspecified special actions because the south insulted its celebrations of its founder's birth. the trial of former senator john edwards all set to get underway this morning down in north carolina. edwards accused of using nearly $1 million in campaign donations to help hide his pregnant mistress during his run for president back in 2008. rielle hunter is expected to testify. >> will be concerned about the fact that people can't get over the fact that he cheated on his wife while she had cancer and as she was dying. >> edwards facing six criminal charges. and if convicted, he faces up to 30 years in prison and more than $1 million in fines.

one of the nation's largest grocery chains is taking a hit at the register. safe way is facing challenges. analysts report a declining stock value brought on by competition and talks of takeover. the company is also at odds over the union over a labor deal. safe way is the second largest super market chain in north america. and despite the recent problems, though, it took in more than $43 billion in sales last year. and we have some welcome news kind of for drivers this morning. gas prices slowly dropping. nationally, prices fell more than 5 cents a gallon over the past two weeks according to the lundburgh survey. that drop due to a stagnant price for crude oil. in the past week, gas prices have dropped about 3 cents in the bay area. oakland at $4.16, san jose, $4.17, san francisco, clocking the pumps at $4.28. well, this may come as a surprise considering today's economy, car sales are hitting

record highs. the latest figures show auto sales up 20%. analysts say the average age of a car on the road is more than ten years old. it's the highest it's ever been. with the fuel efficiency of new cars, people are choosing to buy rather than repair their aging vehicles. well, if you're planning your next vacation, now could be the best time to land some deals. the industry calls this time of the year the shoulder season. it's the weeks following winter and the few months before summer hits. travel agents say because this is not the usual time for vacations, this means more vacancies and bargains. >> a lot of these vacation company providers are putting out packages inclusive of airfare. in some cases waving airfare just to get people out there. >> you can also save some money by booking flights that depart midweek or on a saturday. >> they call it shoulder season. we call it spring. maybe we should call it back season. lay on your back, chill out. >> that'll be nice on the beach.

>> yeah, you could head to the beach. i'm sure plenty of you went to the beach this season. it was hot. it was gorgeous. >> why go anywhere? this is the time of the year -- we live -- and that's why everybody wants to live here in the bay area. that's why we fork out the big bucks to live here. beautiful landmarks, the bay bridge, just a gorgeous live shot here. you can see the wind not really having an impact on the water out there. kind of glassy on the bay. the winds are dropping off. temperatures are on the mild side, 57 degrees in oakland, 55 in navato. up to 64 degrees inland, 60 by the bay and still holding on to the 50s by the coast. but nonetheless, mid-60s. where we actually hit the 80s. here's what we're expecting throughout the next 48 hours. slowly but surely an area of low pressure's going to take a ride on the jet stream bringing us rain. starting tomorrow up in the

north bay, but really for the greater bay area, the rain arrives heading through your wednesday. keep that in mind. let's time it out. stop the clock at 6:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. starting to get activity along the coastline. you can see mostly clear conditions for your tuesday. more moisture arrives, steady rain, 1:00 p.m. wednesday, pretty much all day thursday. we're talking about rain. so that's the day you want to plan on being indoors. wednesday, you'll be able to get outdoors for the first part of the day. friday, clearing, warming by saturday, lots of sunshine this weekend. back to you, mike. >> we'll take folks out to the roadways. east shore freeway right when we see the volume increase, we do have one accident reported. the car hit the center divide. it spun around a few times, didn't hit anybody. it will be a distraction, no metering lights yet. and a wind advisory canceled for the bay bridge. we'll keep our eyes on that. we're looking over here to highway 4 where we know we have the slowing.

pittsburgh and bay point still holding up fine, antioch westbound, that's your slow stretch for highway 4. and a typical westbound slowing, as well, coming out of the altamont pass. a 21-minute drive all the way through the dublin interchange with speeds into the 40s for the most part. and a new disabled vehicle reported right here at first. now this is over in the center divide. but again, as chp arrives, this will be a distraction. you may find more slowing between north flynn and approaching 1st street. and a live look crossing the bay. they're kind of hovering around right now. making the view of the bridge the san mateo bridge a little spooky. the view on the bridge is just fine. but along at that volume picking up for the westbound direction. so far, though, it's incident free. that's good news. >> very good news. thank you, mike. 6:20 now. over the weekend, french voters made it very clear they do not support the current president. scott mcgrew says that french revolution could have serious effects on europe's recovery. >> who would've ever thought we'd be following french politics so closely.

but europe, america's biggest trading partner is in extreme danger of recession and the decisions french voters make will have an effect on the country, the continent, and eventually us, as well. sarkozy did not get enough votes over the weekend to prevent a runoff with this man. holland rejects most of the plan put in place by germany and france to save the european economy. now france and germany have been pushing their neighbors for austerity, cut programs, reduce prejudi pensions, and it's clear if sarkozy loses in france, that plan will collapse and you've got france and germany on opposite sides of a major issue. also over the weekend, the international monetary fund and the world bank pledged hundreds of billions of euros in support of europe in europe continues on that path of austerity. there's concern that spain may face bankruptcy and there's not enough euros in the bank to bail that country out. meanwhile, back at the

it is 6:25. lawmakers digging deeper into the secret service scandal this week. some asking if white house staffers might be connected to what happened in colombia. brian mooar live in washington. he has all the details. brian. good morning. >> reporter: john, it just keeps getting bigger by the day it seems. 12 secret service employees, agents and officers involved and 11 members of the u.s. military. but now there are these new questions about whether white house employees might be involved. that is one question among 50 being put forward by the house homeland security committee.

they also want to know whether any past prostitution incidents were reported to the secret service. but back to the white house. independent senator joe liberman of connecticut is one person here on capitol hill calling on the white house to do a more thorough investigation, find out whether any of its employees might have gone wrong on this trip to colombia. liberman also bringing up the fact that now one of these 12 employees with the secret service was staying in the same hotel as the president. the race is new araises new and troubling questions. >> yeah, no doubt this one's far from over. thank you very much for the report. meteorologist christina loren, last week it was all about the heat, this week it's a little bit of warmth mixed in with some showers. >> yeah, it's about the wild roller coaster ride that mother nature doesn't want to let us

the vehicle slipped over the divider and burst into flames. it came very close to tumbling off the highway and down that 40-foot drop you saw there. here's the thing, the driver was only slightly hurt. he told police another driver cut him off forcing him to crash. no other cars were involved and the driver's being held on suspicion of drunk driving charges. students at oikos university at oakland returning to class this morning three weeks after a gunman shot and killed seven people. live in oakland "today in the bay." ross mirkarimi will take a new tact to try and win his job back. "today in the bay's" christie smith is live with more on this afternoon's ethics commission hearing. it's been a long road so far. good morpg. >> that's exactly right, marla. his legal team tried to get his job back for him by heading to court last week. they argued the point he wasn't even sworn in as sheriff when this accident occurred. but a judge wasn't moved by any of that. and now the matter is moving to san francisco's city hall will it will go before an ethics commission later this afternoon. and they'll begin by trying to figure out the process and protocol for this hearing. mirkarimi was only sworn in in january just days after a new year's eve altercation with his wife. he pleaded guilty, was fined and in ordered to attend domestic violence classes, mayor ed lee then suspended him without pay for official misconduct.

this hearing isn't expected to have big fireworks and the plan called initially for a written brief back and forth between both sides. they each have about a week to respond, and then it could include testimony. it's unclear, though, whether mirkarimi will testify himself. the whole thing could take weeks and earlier his attorney told us it seems somewhat vague. >> you could have this ethics commission composed of these particular members. decide these are the rules we're going to play by for this hearing. five years down the road in separate removal proceedings for somebody else, it could be completely different rules. that just shows you that there are no standards for this proceeding and that it's fundamentally unfair. >> now, the commission is made up of five members. and what it does is look at the facts and will send its recommendation over to the board of supervisors who will then decide if mirkarimi will be able to keep his job. if he is ousted 9 out of 11

welcome back, everyone. you get the cap, the gown, the diploma, but a rude awakening waiting for this year's college graduates. the study by the a.p. shows half of recent college grads are either jobless or unemployed. many young adults with degrees are getting by in low-wage jobs. and it's creating problems paying off their tuition debt. the study finds strong demand in the health and science field as the country's population ages. it also found that california ranked high -- that california did rank high in the number of graduates still looking for work. did arizona go too far? this week the supreme court will take on the state's tough and controversial immigration law. under the pending law state and local police would have the power to check the immigration

university in oakland. and it was just three weeks ago today a gunman went on a rampage killing six students and a staffer on that very campus. "today in the bay" is there with the details and changes for some of the students on campus. plenty of changes now for some of the students who have been studying theology, music, and asian medicine. they are set to return here this morning. but nursing students, well, they're heading somewhere else. they're not coming back to this campus here in oakland. and one of them is kalir. she told a local paper she was not going to return to class if she had to be back in this building. and she won't have to. she and other nursing students are set to take classes in fremont at the unitech campus. meanwhile the president of the campus says there may be a bigger group of students back here at the oakland campus tomorrow for an open house type of event and the school should have counselors onhand for those who are coming back.

and it is here where investigators say a former nursing student one goh shot and killed six students and one staff member. he's actually due back in court a week from today when he may enter a plea. live in oakland this morning, "today in the bay." 6:52. new this morning, police are looking for a would be robber whose plan was foiled by a gas station employee in oakland. it happened about 9:45 last night near coliseum way. a woman walked into this place, pulled out a gun and demanded money. the employee wrestled the gun away from the woman. she ran away without any money. also new this morning, have you seen this video? a driver's arrested for dui after this crash on 880 in oakland. chp found the car on fire and hanging off an overpass in the southbound lanes just north of broadway and 7th street about 3:00 this morning. the driver told chp another vehicle forced him off the road. they are looking into his claim

but arrested the driver on suspicion of drunk driving. no question about it, the stakes are very high today for suspended sheriff ross mirkarimi as his lawyers try to save his job and political career. "today in the bay's" christie smith is live with an update. good morning, christie. >> reporter: good morning to you, john. the first thing this commission is going to do today is decide the protocol and the procedures for this hearing. and it doesn't sound very exciting, but these details are critical for ross mirkarimi who is fighting to keep his job as san francisco's sheriff. the ethics commission hearing at city hall this afternoon is expected to be pretty methodical and not full of fireworks. attorneys for the city and mirkarimi submitting briefs back and forth. and then later, there could be witnesses. it's unclear, though, whether mirkarimi will testify. ed lee suspended him without pay for official misconduct after he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor after a new year's eve

altercation with his wife. mirkarimi's attorney had challenged the proceeding saying there are no rules and they're basically making it up as they go. now, the commission hasn't completed a misconduct hearing. the last one was in 2007 for then supervisor, he was later convicted for extorting bribes. he resigned after the opening session. again, it was never completed. what happens then is that the commission makes a recommendation to the board of supervisors who will ultimately decide mirkarimi's fate. reporting live in san francisco christie smith, "today in the bay." 6:54 now. pg & e fighting a lawsuit of the survivors of the deadly pipeline explosion claiming it should not be punished for "an accident." in recent court documents, pg & e says there's no requirement for punitive damages. hundreds of victims are suing the utility in civil court demanding compensation in addition to millions paid for lost homes and loved ones. that civil trial is set for

july. meanwhile, a 1989 pg & e memo shows a san bruno pipeline had a history of bad welds. the recently uncovered document details an investigation into a 1988 leak about nine miles south of the san bruno blast. the memo concluded that leak was likely caused by a defective weld. the same problem that investigators say contributed to the san bruno explosion. pg & e says the findings were not definitive and did not require it to test the entire 51-mile long pipeline. and more than 100 boats sailed out in the bay for a major memorial. saturday, they gathered memory of the five sailors presumed dead after an accident during a yacht race back on april 14th. the san francisco yacht club of belvedere organized a sunset memorial service. eight days ago, the sailors were swept overboard near the islands. one body was recovered, but four crew members are still missing. convicted rapist and heir to

the max factor fortune wants a new trial. luster was arrested in 2003 accused of drugging and raping three women. well, now he claims he had ineffective council and his prison season was miscalculated. a california appeals court panel has ordered a hearing to considering his claims. luster is serving 124 years for the crime. well, in this modern era, bullies prey on playgrounds and online. so police in fremont want to make sure children know exactly how to protect themselves on every level. later on today, officers holding a seminar. they like to teach people how to not become victims of cyber bullies and predators. police say the internet and technology have evolved so have the means to abuse them. the free seminar is from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. tonight at washington hospital. the federal government has launched an investigation into 5,000 school buses after several cases of engine problems.

and at least three of them failed causing the buses to suddenly stall. in one case, a bus was traveling 55 miles an hour with a full load of students when the engine began smoking and abruptly quit. the problems all stem from 2008 model buses with the brand international ce. the investigation may lead to a recall. well, experts now saying that bright light and loud explosion that rattled parts of california and nevada were likely caused by a meteor shower. the sound of a loud boom yesterday morning prompting a flood of calls to 911. the explosion rattled windows, shook houses from sacramento to bakersfield. now some people even reported seeing a fire ball streak right across the sky at the same time. >> there was a really low rumble that started getting louder and louder and louder like a rocket taking off. then it finally started shaking the house and everything. >> well, experts say the meteor likely broke up above earth somewhere over the sierra
