have a house surrounded. people refusing to come out. all this somehow connected to a fatal stabbing. >> "today in the bay's" christie smith live this morning with the latest on the fluid situation. what can you tell us? >> good morning to you, laura, s.w.a.t. teams keep arriving, putting on their heavy gear, their helmets, taking out their high-powered weapons after people in the home barricaded themselves inside and claimed to officers they have firearms and they're refusing to cooperate. this is on cleveland avenue where there is a wide perimeter set up this morning. i'm stopping talking because i'm hearing some kind of popping sound, and i'm hearing dogs barking. but this started about 1:45 this morning with a 911 call, a man down on cleveland avenue, turns out he was stabbed. he was taken to valley medical center where he died. san jose police then tried to talk with the people in the home where the 911 calls came from in

the first place. but the people in the house refused to cooperate with the investigators and said they had guns. that's when police called for backup. the s.w.a.t. team came out, they told people who live close by they might want to leave for safety. people did that very quickly. what the motive is they still don't know. and they're not even sure what the relationship is to these people and the stabbing victim. we're waiting for a spokesperson to come out here and as soon as they give us an update, we'll bring that information to you. reporting live in san jose, christie smith, "today in the bay." also new this morning, a cab driver car jacked, kidnapped, and then left by the side of the road. the taxi driver telling police he picked up three men at the bay point b.a.r.t. station last night and took them to an apartment complex in antioch. when they arrived there, police say the passengers robbed the driver at gunpoint and forced him into the trunk of his cab. later, they eventually dropped him off in oakland. they then took the car, police right now still looking for the cab and the gunman.

also in oakland, police trying to figure out exactly what caused a crash that damaged an ac transit bus. this all happened about 2:00 this morning near the intersection of west grand and telegraph. the crash still under investigation, but it appears at this point a car sideswiped the bus. our crew at that scene there says there were passengers onboard of the bus, but everybody appears to be okay. 6:02, this could put the brakes on your weekend plans. major stretch of roadway in san francisco will be torn down. the doyle drive approach to the golden gate bridge into the city is going to be a mess. "today in the bay's" bob redell is live. more on the shut down and how long it'll last. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning, laura. well, this is the last morning commute on doyle drive. come monday morning, all of this will be gone. a disappearing act that will take 57 hours to complete, 40 excavators, some of which we're

passing right now. they're already staged here on the elevated roadway. it'll be up to 300 workers and we imagine probably lots of aspirin for the drivers trying to get in and out of san francisco. it all starts at 8:00 tonight when caltrans will shut down doyle drive, shutting down until 5:00 monday morning, the road will be closed at marina and lombard streets in san francisco. highway 1 and the golden gate bridge will remain open. but caltran is warning of gridlock. avoid this area if you can this weekend. doyle drive is coming down to make way for the new $1.1 billion parkway. it's a partial lip tunnelled approach to the golden gate bridge that is not expected to open until 2016. a much-needed improvement over doyle drive. doyle drive 1/2 mile stretch of elevated roadway that became too old and dangerous. >> doyle drive is from 1936. it's old, it's seismically unsafe, and this has been a project to rebuild it. it's been under construction a

little over a year. >> so, again, shutting down at 8:00 tonight, they say it'll be open 5:00 monday morning. of course, in time for a commute, you'll have a shifted roadway. you might have seen that on the graphic that caltrans provided with us. if you're wondering, boy, this weather is nice, i want to get to the city to see the giants play, what do i do? ask mike. >> well, you can go to the city and when you come out tonight, that's going to be the big issue. it's closing at 8:00 p.m. tonight. let's get a look from our chopper, quick check to see where they are. they were trying to find you on doyle drive. we had a lot of white suvs through the area, they've cleared the area. we're looking at the construction where doyle drive will be closed. keep in mind, back to the maps, even though the construction and reroute will be in place between basically marina and lombard and the palace of fine arts and the golden gate bridge. you can still get there, it's going to be very crowded, though. the alternate geary boulevard or

california a little further south. and those two roadways are very crowded as well as geary that will take you through japan town. it's going to be very crowded in the area. consider this, maybe you're going to go the other way. go to the bay bridge and get out of the city that way. eastbound 80 taking you up through berkeley and then emeryville and in through richmond across that bridge. that's 580 across to the north bay. that's an excellent reroute for you. and it'll add mileage but might save you some actual headache and time. if you head into the city for dinner as you're getting home for dinner back in the north bay, this will be something to consider. >> thank you very much. well, a lot of people praying this morning for a boy named angel. right now 14-year-old angel perez in a medically induced coma at the hospital after being hit by a pickup truck in san jose. police say perez darted right into the intersection riding his bike. unfortunately, he was not wearing a helmet. right now, all his family can really do is hold on to hope the swelling and pressure in his

town and again as you're passing by airway all the way to the dublin interchange. that's a little bit unusual. spread further west than we typically see at this time. a live look outside at 880 as you travel past the coliseum, northbound on the right, southbound on the left, and neither side experiencing any right now. things will continue to build and we'll update you on what to do to get around the doyle drive closure coming up. back to you. well, in an effort to jump start executions in california, governor brown wants prison officials to explore a new way to do them. instead of using three drugs for lethal injections, he wants them to consider using just one. executions have been on hold since 2006, that's when a judge called for new procedures and those have yet to be ironed out. the three drug combination is a sticking point on this. one judge has argued the one-drug method may be less likely to cause suffering. meantime, a measure to abolish the death penalty altogether will be on that november ballot.

also this november, it's likely voters will be asked to soften the state's three strikes law. professors at stanford university writing an initiative. right now, prosecutors can change any felon actually charge -- actually charge any felon as a third strike and lock up the offender for 25 years to life. three strikes reform act would reverse this penalty for murderers -- reserve the penalty for murderers, rapists, and child molesters. it is 6:10. the race is on to revamp pier 27 in san francisco. and today mayor ed lee will be celebrating the start. he will be conducting a ceremonial signing of the agreement that will bring the americas cup sailing races to san francisco in 2013. pier 27 will serve as the start and finish lines as well as the heart of the spectator village. it is 6:10 right now.

this is going to be doing a fly over new york city landmarks including the statue of liberty. that'll be a cool sight for people on the east coast. it's going to land inside the intrepid sea, air, and space museum in manhattan. >> thanks, marla. 6:15 right now. the u.s. state department is looking into new allegations secret service agents hired prostitutes in el salvador last year. a seattle television station reports agents spent three nights at a strip club in el salvador. this is video from president obama's trip to el salvador last year. they allegedly paid for v.i.p. access to prostitutes there and bragged they did this all the time. state department says it's reviewing to see if any of their employees were involved. but was vague on whether just visiting the club violates its rules. homeland security secretary janet napolitano who oversees the secret service told lawmakers hiring prostitutes in colombia was an isolated

potts joins us in washington with a critical vote in the house. good morning, tracie. >> good morning. if you get a federal student loan after july 1st, the interest rate is going to double, double to 6.8%. that's if congress does nothing. but there is a vote scheduled today. republicans say it's going to cost almost $6 billion to keep those interest rates low. they want to pay for that by taking money from the president's health plan. what they call a slush fund that covers things like wellness, research, screenings, and immunization prevention programs. democrats don't want to see those go away. they'd rather get rid of oil subsidies and impose higher taxes, social security and medicare taxes on people who own big corporations. there's disagreement here about how to get this done, but the will between democrats and republicans, not to let the rates go up on new loans as of january 1st. meantime, in california and all over the nation, people are dealing with a lot of student debt on average $15,000 in

good morning to you. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm jon kelley. we continue to follow breaking news out of san jose. a man is dead. police s.w.a.t. teams have surrounded a house right now. it all started after a deadly stabbing at the -- the thing earlier today, it was an incident out there. this morning, police have been held up outside of a house for several hours. >> "today in the bay's" christie smith is live in the rose garden neighborhood this morning with the latest. what can you tell us?

>> reporter: well, within the last 20, 30 minutes or so, we heard at least two loud boom sounds and some s.w.a.t. officers walking that way. that is the direction of the home in question. but quite a few s.w.a.t. officers out here still this morning in this neighborhood. just saw a fire truck pull up and also an ambulance. but police not revealing much about what they're doing at the moment or any possible injuries lately. what we do know is that this is happening on the 200 block of cleveland avenue. residents say it's by the rose garden and the burbank neighborhood. about 1:45, police say they got a 911 call about a man down who'd been stabbed in the area. he was taken to a hospital where he later died. investigators say they tried to go back to the home where that 911 call came from and the people inside refused to cooperate and said they were armed. i spoke with one neighbor who didn't want her face shown. she thinks she knows which house this is and says the area gets rougher on that corner.

this weather, no fog, i couldn't expect better driving conditions. come this weekend, you will be able to do what we're doing right now, of course, drive across the golden gate bridge, but it is highly not recommended. those in the transportation business are telling us they are expecting gridlock, a slow and go traffic because the main approach to the golden gate bridge from san francisco side will be shut down. of course, we are talking about doyle drive starting at 8:00 tonight until 5:00 monday morning. caltrans will close doyle drive in both directions. this will be starting at marina and lombard street so it can take it out. the bridge itself on highway 1 will remain open, but again, without doyle drive, there just isn't enough road surface streets area to handle the normal flow of cars. so expect traffic jams. this 57-hour marathon of nonstop construction will involve up to 300 workers and 40 excavators, some of which we've seen set up along doyle drive already this morning. this 1/2 mile stretch of

elevated roadway needs to come down because it's old, it's been around 76 years. and in its place will be a partially tunnelled roadway. at the $1.1 billion project not expected to be completed until 2016. so come monday morning on the commute to doyle drive, that elevated roadway will be gone and in its place will be a temporary bypass. so if you're thinking, boy, i've got to get in the city this weekend to enjoy this nice weather to see the giants play at at&t park, what do i do? we know the golden gate ferries will be doubling service. any other suggestions? >> i think the ferry is a good option for you because you don't have to test the roads at all. once you get into the city, you've got to find your other transportation through the area, but you can do that, you can also walk, it's a beautiful day. great weather expected. doyle drive getting into or out of the city will be cut off between the marina or palace of fine arts. and we're looking over here toward the golden gate bridge.

this stretch cut off. you can use here right here, this is geary. those two roadways are connected. so all of these roadways already very crowded. they're going to get a lot more traffic flow through the area as folks try to get around and back to the golden gate bridge. you can avoid that by the ferries over the water or over the water through the bay bridge. go east over to the berkeley and oakland side. take that up through berkeley for eastbound 80 and westbound 580 across that richmond san rafael bridge take you back over to san rafael and you'll rejoin 101 in the north bay. you might have to go a few more extra miles, but might save you a headache. just an option. if you normally choose between the bay bridge and san mateo bridge, choose the san mateo bridge. that whole ripple effect. 6:35, a los gatos home set on fire not once, but twice, and now the owners of the home on vista del monte east of highway

17 are adding to the $20,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. the first fire was set the night of october 18th. the second on january 12th. no one was home either time. and the house is now too damaged for the family to live in. also this morning, laura, an update to breaking news we first brought to you right here on "today in the bay." 11 people facing charges after a major drug bust in oakland. police seizing 2,500 marijuana plants, several guns, including assault rifles and body armor from a warehouse on 89th avenue in east oakland early thursday morning. they also found $40,000 in cash and 50 pounds of dried pot. the street value, more than $1 million. this morning, the ocean is effectively off limits to yacht racing. the coast guard is putting a stop to sailboat races until it wraps up an investigation into the deadly boating accident in the islands. fife crew men aboard the low-speed chase died when they

christie smith has been live at the scene. and right now we want to police to investigators making comments. >> i wouldn't be able to comment on that. >> do we know what the relationship between the deceased and the residents of the house is? >> we do not. and that's something we're trying to determine. so we do know that the call came in from that house. we're just trying to establish what the relationship is now between the victim and that residence. >> was the deceased person in the house? or were they on the street? >> they were located in front of the residence. i don't know if it was on the sidewalk, grass, or street. but it was outside in the front area. and so -- but the call again came in from that house on the 200 block. and so now it's just a matter of trying to determine the relationship between the victim and what -- why he was there and try to identify the individuals in the house. >> are they making any demands before giving themselves up? why are they hold up? >> i don't have any information as to whether they've made any demands. i know that we initially had contact with the individual from the patrol division. the original officers that were

at the scene, they had brief contact with that individual. since then, there's been no contact with him. the merge officers are trying to have some type of communication with them, but he's refusing to cooperate. >> were there any other people in the house? >> there's at least one individual, may be more than one, but at this point, we only know there's one individual that was initially contacted by the investigating officer that responded -- >> are they talking about -- >> not at this point. there's no contact -- >> all right. we will continue to listen to jose garcia from the san jose police department this morning giving us the very latest on the ass.w.a.t. standoff that is happening in the rose garden neighborhood of san jose this morning. looks like our live shot there is breaking up just a little bit. but it is now going on five hours originally a person was called in said to be stabbed in that area. they eventually took that person to valley medical center where they were pronounced dead. and then the people that actually made that 911 call from

here's your forecast for tomorrow. first we're going to fly you into half-moon bay. 74 degrees half-moon bay and pacifica. gorgeous conditions. it's going to be a little bit on the breezy side meaning you're going to get good-looking waves out there. but keep that in mind, breezy to windy, that'll make it feel cooler. still want to keep that sunscreen on even though it might not be as warm as you think it is with that windchill factor. 80 degrees your warmest beach city. santa cruz, and that means a lot of traffic getting down to the beach on 17, but once you get there, spectacular conditions tomorrow. take the good with the bad, the bad, those allergy levels. pollen levels creeping back up as a result of the gusty winds and the dry pattern shaping up for us. if you are someone who suffers from allergies, limit your outdoor exposure as we head through this weekend if you can. 70 degrees in san jose today, 71 in livermore and comfortable 68 degrees in san francisco. don't forget, you can catch the giants tomorrow night on nbc bay area. the game's at 6:05, they're taking on the pads, also taking them on today at 7:15.

and if you are going to that game before you even think about it, we need to talk to mike. >> good morning, christina. probably talking about all the big traffic changes. doyle drive, we'll talk about that in a second. i did want to update, though, folks. christie smith was talking about the s.w.a.t. situation. we had that press conference going on there. this is around the rose garden. now, that's cleveland at forest. that is not affecting 880 or 280 through the area. but those surface streets around the rose garden, watch for police activity and by all means, listen to their directions. stay safe. the rest of the south bay, starting to see 101 coming up past 87 and 880 with slowing in both directions. also slow past capitol expressway. overall the volume's lighter because it's a friday. we don't see a lot of problem. over here out of castro valley, slowing as well as into union city, speeds in the 40s and 50s where you see the yellow. the green closer to the speed limit. over to the peninsula side, a smooth drive. getting into the city, nice, easy drive.

but talking about this coming up for the weekend. folks going to the giants game after the game, getting out of town, you'll be cut off from basically marina over toward the golden gate bridge. geary boulevard is your alternate. folks will make their way around the closure, double the service for the ferries. all of this is going on. bob redell, you're out there, doyle drive is closing. what's up over there? >> reporter: well, good morning to you, mike. this is the last morning commute on doyle drive. come monday morning, all this that we're driving on right now will be gone. it's a disappearing act that will take 57 hours to complete, 40 excavators which are already parked some of which right to the side of us. around 300 workers, and we imagine probably lots of aspirin for drivers trying to get in and out of san francisco this weekend. but i know the information you gave them will be helpful as far as finding detours. this all starts at 8:00 tonight. doyle drive will be coming down,

starting down, that's when caltrans will shut down this roadway until 5:00 monday morning. the road will be closed at marina and lombard streets. highway 1 and the golden gate bridge will remain open, but caltrans is warning of gridlock. avoid this area if you can. doyle drive is coming down to make way for the new $1.1 billion parkway. it's a partially tunnelled approach to the golden gate bridge that is not expected to be fully open until 2016. @be a much-needed improvement over doyle drive. doyle drive a 1/2 mile stretch of elevated roadway that became too old and dangerous. >> doyle drive is from 1936. it's old, it's seismically unsafe, and so this has been a project to rebuild it. under construction a little over a year. >> reporter: so come monday morning when this road is expected to open by 5:00 a.m. in time for a commute, there will be a temporary bypass in its place. and if you saw by the graphic,

you can get a good idea. reporting live on the approach on the bridge, bob redell, "today in the bay." we continue to follow breaking news out of the south bay this morning where a standoff in its fifth hour in san jose's rose garden neighborhoods. police s.w.a.t. teams continue to surround a house this morning after people inside refusing to come out. all of this somehow connected to a fatal stabbing. christie smith is live in san jose. we just heard from police officers. what else did you learn? >> reporter: well, police just kind of walked us through exactly what they know at this point. and that is at 1:45 this morning, they got a 911 call of a man down stabbed here on cleveland avenue. the 200 block. when they arrived, they found a 51-year-old man who was down. he was taken to the hospital, stabbed. he died. investigators tried to contact the person who originally called 911 in that house, they came back, that's around the corner from where we are here.

they tried to talk to that man in the house and they say he refused to cooperate. and they say that man is still in that home right now. they initially were very concerned because they got information he may have had weapons inside that home. but they're saying they don't think that's the case now. and what they're trying to do is establish some sort of contact with him. but they say at this point, they haven't been able to do that. so that brings us to where we are here. s.w.a.t. teams out here trying to make contact with the man that is still in the home. they don't think he has anyone else in there with him. that's the latest from here, reporting live in san jose, christie smith, "today in the bay." so the potential threat is gone that he may not have weapons, christie, but what about the fact that people need to come and go from that neighborhood in this morning? and also there are three schools in that area. did they say anything about that? >> reporter: they didn't really address that except to say that, you know, they did set off some flash bangs in the area. it's still a very intense situation. they're not quite sure what it is that he's thinking. there was concern he may have

had a number of weapons in there. that's not the case. i can tell you that the streets around here still closed down. people really not allowed to cross at least through that particular street and some of the surrounding streets. it's one of the areas you would want to avoid. >> thank you very much for following this and we will continue to follow it all morning long. we're also following developing news out of florida. a new twist in the george zimmerman case. trayvon martin's family wants him locked up again after they say he did not fully disclose his finances. marla tellez in our newsroom. and he's right now in court, correct? >> yeah, jon, in the midst of another hearing. the judge has refused the prosecution's request and will not issue a gag order on those involved in his murder trial. now the other issue this morning is his finances. you may recall one week ago zimmerman was granted bond after this hearing in which zimmerman's family testified they did not have big money to get him out of jail. well, now it's come to light zimmerman has $204,000 thanks to

donations raised by a website designed for him. zimmerman's attorney says he just learned about this money. and these pictures here coming into our newsroom from seattle. this luxury yacht, nothing but a charred mess this morning after it caught fire about 1:00 a.m. firefighters deciding to just let the 93-foot yacht burn. the good news, no one was hurt, but still bad news if you're the yacht's captain. well, now an exciting look at space shuttle "enterprise" piggy backing on a jumbo jet as it took off from dulles international airport just a few minutes ago. it's headed to the skies above new york city. it's actually going to be doing a fly over all of those famous big apple landmarks. it's going to land inside the intrepid sea, air, and space museum in manhattan. >> thank you for the update on that. later on today, the fire department officially welcoming

aboard new firefighters. 19 new firefighters, the graduation ceremony will be held this evening at city hall. hired thanks to a $15 million federal grant called safer. now over the past year, the department has been able to hire a total of 49 firefighters through the safer grant. that means staffing levels should be above normal in 2010. budget cuts forced the department to lay off 49 firefighters.
