but we'll notice the jet stream running further to the north going into the weekend. high pressure is starting to build in. what we'll see is most valley locations today mid to upper 70s, close to 80 around santa rosa out to let's say fairfield and concord for this afternoon. upper 60s to low 70s near the inner bay. there you see the low 60s around the coast. santa cruz could climb into the mid-70s today. today we are starting to warm up and then things warm up for your sunday forecast. we'll let you know what to expect for the rest of the weekend and the seven-day forecast coming up in a few minutes. thank you very much, rob. new this morning, a bizarre crash in brentwood overnight. six victims, one of whom rescue crews say may have been stabbed before the crash. this all happened just before midnight on ballfour at walnut. fire crews found two cars slammed into each other. some people were sitting nearby and say they saw the whole thing. one witness said they heard a

loud boom and heard a car fly through the air. one of the vix six people that went to the hospital, three were flown in a medical helicopter. in the search for sierra lamar this morning, an announcement near morgan hill. sierra lamar's father is expected to announce they will up the reward money for her safe return. the reward is set at $10,000. the 15-year-old was last seen march 16th as she was leaving for school. investigators are treating this as an abduction and the community is rallying as if they all knew her personally. >> it feels like it's everyone's child that's gone missing. and you see the posters of her, then you are reminded of it. right where i walk my dog every day there's a poster on every tree all the way along the side of the creek, so, yeah, everyone is looking out and hoping, hoping for the best outcome.

>> reporter: do you think increasing the reward money could help? >> i think so. somebody must know something. i mean, she can't just disappear off the face of theette without someone knowing something. >> anyone who wants to volunteer for today's search can go to burnett elementary school in morgan hill at 8:00 this morning. a 20-year-old cold case is getting a new look this morning. in 1993 a man walking his dog found a woman's body under a pile of debris near reservoir street in the east bay town of port costa near the car knee that's strait. investigators never identified the woman or a suspect in the case. until now. a forensic artist produced this sketch based on the woman's skull. she is a white woman between the ages of 20 to 35, 5 feet tall to 5 1/2 feet tall weighing from 90 to 120 pound with reddish/brown colored hair. if you recognize the woman, you are urged to call the sheriff's department. so you think you have some

work to do around the house this weekend? check out what demolition crews are doing at doyle drive in the city. at 8:00 on friday the heavy equipment rolled into action on doyle drive and now you are looking live at the progress this morning. the 75-year-old approach to the golden gate bridge is being demolished very quickly this weekend. the entire approach from highway 101 will be shut down until monday morning for that work. a live look right now at the golden gate bridge where the general consensus is just try to stay away this weekend. the large spur in ferries are a good option making more trips for you this weekend. and also at the bay bridge there's increased traffic expected because folks are trying to make their way in and out of the city. and we have complete coverage of the doyle closure including animations of the new project, what you can expect on the pa parkway when it is open. all of it is on our website, nbcbayarea.com.

now speaking of driving, santa rosa police arrested more than 40 people at a dui checkpoint. but listen to this, only one of those arrests was for dui last night. the rest were busted for driving without a license or driving with a suspended license plus one other person who was arrested for a probation violation. a los gatos woman is now allowed by law to sue the town for negligence. she is a woman blasting los gatos for a poor area where she was hit by a drunken driver. the california sixth district court of appeals reinstated sarah cold's lawsuit against los gatos on friday. luis rodriguez pleaded guilty to felony drunk driving in a crash that severely damaged colt's hips and legs in 2007. the driver suspected of hitting two bicyclists on a berkeley road and taking off is now behind bars. police arrested 43-year-old michael patrick medaglia at an open hotel on friday.

that is the youtube video posted of the crash posted by one of the riders. the suspect's car veers right striking the bicyclist from behind and then the driver keeps going. the two cyclists were not seriously hurt in the collision which happened on tunnel road near the oakland berkeley border wednesday afternoon. after the crash police say medaglia reported his car was stolen. friday police located the car in the parking lot of the jack london inn where they arrested medaglia for a felony hit-and-run, possession of heroin, possession of ammunition and violating probation. a south bay family is trying to rebuild their lives after their home burned not once but twice in two months. both fires were apparently set intentionally say arson investigators and now a search is on for the arsonist. around her home. the first fire started in october started in her daughter's bedroom. >> actually, they set another one as we were walking out. >> reporter: someone deliberately set the britt's home on fire, but the nightmare was not over. in january the britt's home was set on fire again, this time in the garage. >> then the second fire was set in here. and this actually burned to the ground. >> reporter: that's where the family put all their possessions that survived the first fire. the second fire finished them off. >> it was worse the second time, i think, because we pretty much lost everything. before i still had photos and things like that. the second time it was all in the garage. >> reporter: the family believes their daughter is the target since the arsonist broke in through the doggie window, went to her room and set it on fire. everything from her childhood gone. >> all my pictures were gone. like my whole wall in my room was full of pictures and that's all gone. >> reporter: the brit's t's lost

everything in the two fires. they installed a security camera but fear it could happen for a third time. even so, they have no plans to move. >> who is going to buy a house that somebody keeps burning down? and i love my neighborhood. this is a wonderful neighborhood. my neighbors are all great. >> reporter: george kiriyama, "today in the bay." >> for now the family is living in an apartment while their home is being rebuilt. new information this morning surrounding the high-profile political love triangle involving former alameda supervisor had in nadya lockyer. they will not file charges against her ex-boyfriend. she claimed she was assaulted by her former boyfriend at a newark hotel back in february. shortly after the alleged assault lockyer checked herself into rehab. then last week she resigned her position as county supervisor and said to focus on her recovery and on her son. nadya lockyer's husband is state

treasurer bill lockyer. trouble for google. the mountain-based company is under investigation overseas for questionable business practices. in a filing friday google revealed that the company is under investigation in argentina and south korea. argentinian officials are looking into the county's search and advertising services. meanwhile, korean regulators are investigating whether google blocked competitors in search results. similar investigations are already underway here in the u.s. and in europe. coming up on "today in the bay," the san francisco giants aubrey huff returns to san francisco after announcing he's dealing with an anxiety disorder. find out what he's saying to his fans. plus, if you want to get rid of a pg&e smart meter, pg&e wants to know so. l tell you what their deadline means for you. we

good morning. looking live at the city from across the bay this morning, remember avoid the golden gate bridge if you can because the doyle drive demolition project is now in full swing. a pg&e employee is asking members to opt out of the smartmeter by next tuesday. on the site pg&e is requesting you to opt out or in at any time. they approved the opt out plan in february. nearly 20,000 customers in northern california already have chosen to opt out. well, the first gabriel zimmerman scholarship fund has been awarded at the university of california santa cruz. zimmerman was shot and killed in tucson last year while working as an aide to congresswoman gabrielle giffords. he was awarding the gabriel zimmerman memorial scholarship on monday. it is not about her but the legacy of someone who dedicated

good saturday morning to you. 7:15. really, that makes you happy to have hd cameras around when you see a view like that. gorgeous sunshine. cloud-free across the bay bridge. not much wind. and plenty of sunshine for today. spring sunshine and upper temperatures. right now, a little chilly in some spots near the bay area. 40s and 50s to get your day started. we should see a sea breeze picking up to keep san francisco and the coast running a little bit cool as we head through the afternoon. so some of the weather headlines we'll be watching, inland spots, 70s and 80s coming up. tomorrow looks warmer than today, but on the coast we'll see patchy low clouds to wrap up the weekend, but mostly mild days ahead. radar is comfortably dry right now. we had a lot of rain come in wednesday evening and thursday. that system, by the way, now moving through the midwest. that's where the active weather will be today. places like chicago, heading over towards detroit, but you can see here on the west coast,

things are starting to clear out. high pressure taking the jet stream and moving it off to the north. so the trend we'll see with the northwesterly winds will be breezy and relatively cool along the coast, but inland with the northwesterly winds we'll see temperatures climb up throughout the weekend. should be in the mid-70s near the santa clara valley. warmer down to morgan hill and gilroy. over to fairfield, should be pretty nice. close to 80 degrees. pleasanton near 80. the upper 70s near livermore. heading into the north bay, numbers close to 80 in santa rosa. a bit cooler for san francisco and a high of 67 degrees. as we wrap up the weekend, temperatures climb up a few more degrees come tomorrow. 70s and 80s across the valleys. and the inner bay, the mid-70s there. monday to tuesday, about the same. then we'll see some cooling as we go toward the middle part of the week, but overall that weather forecast looks great. how about that? perfect timing for some spring weather and some spring fashion. kris, over to you.

we are pleased you told us we wouldn't need the umbrellas for this weekend because we have cute fashions to talk about. especially now that winter is gone and summer is here, we have this lovely lady here based out of san francisco. i think i'm doing it all wrong today. i'm old trend. this is the new trend. >> well, we have some really fun stuff happening for spring right now. and we'll bring on the models. and we'll talk about some of the trends. this is a big trend. we saw this in an all neutral happening on the red carpet, on the oscars. for summer it is happening head-to-toe white, which is very hard for me. because i went from doing all black to this all-white thing. and it looks phenomenal. she's doing a tuxedo blazer. this is a great version of the tuxedo blazer everybody wore during the fall. this is a white version. you can wear wit the skinny jeans or summer dresses. >> we can go all white even if we are not going as dressy.

>> yes, you can. we are seeing a lot of summer dresses in lace in white. and it can look bridal. so add a pop of color happening on some of the other looks we are working on. but then she's got just a little piece of jewelry, statement jewelry is really big right now. and then the hair, which we had done by amanda v. is a long, is a big trend rights now. the big bun. >> i love the big bun. >> it took her two minutes to do it. it is called a sock bun sitting high on top of the head. and it is a great look that you can do casually. and if you're busy and on the go, perfect to take two minutes. >> verile very elegant in two minutes. also color-blocking, i just learned the term, but the bright colors are really appealing. >> yes, you are seeing a lot of neons. orange is the color of the year. you're seeing that. you're seeing the neon yellow and pink. we are seeing it all over. i have to come out of my shell a little bit going from all black. here we have tina. >> super cute.

>> this is right up my alley right here. this is such a favorite look of mine. we are definitely doing color blocking and a lot of people think color blocking should be in the specific piece, so they think i got to find a jacket that's part black, part pink. take pieces in your wardrobe and color block with those. so here we have the navy blue georgia tank with the lace shorts. and we have the pop of color in her shoes. great heels. but again, i love having pieces you can wear with everything else. and these pieces, you can do the shorts, for example, with the white blazer. and the hair here, again, we have a bo hemoan feel, and braids are very popular. and we also went ahead and did a light natural look we are seeing on celebrities with a sun glow like jessica simpson, very flow and pretty. >> if we can't go with that, we work in business news where we can't go the whole look, except

maybe on weekends, you have accessories to tie in as well. >> yes, definitely. one of my favorites is the bracelets here called friendship bracelets. tina stacked them up her arm, but do one piece to give it a pop of color. they come in wraps, which are huge trends right now, and they also are great presents for anybody in your life. and this one is a partnership with feed and a huge percentage goes back to feeding different communities. >> i see you are wearing a long necklace and a model was wearing a long necklace with a coin. >> statement jewelry is a big thing right now. i love to switch things out. buy one piece and don't invest in a whole new piece. these pieces come with individual coins. and this capable right here, you can take the coin out of it and put in a new coin and swap them out. they come in rose gold, yellow gold and silver. and you can mix your golds and silvers and kind of mix your

giants star aubrey huff has once again rejoined the team. the giants put huff on the disabled list so he could deal with his anxiety disorder. he returned to at&t park friday night but did not speak with reporters. he did release a statement before the game in which he thanked the fans and his teammates for their support. he also said, quote, my goal is to get back on the field as soon as possible, to do that, i have to focus completely on getting well. i know i'm in a public job, and i've been one of the more open guys, but sometimes you have to pull back and work on things in private. this is one of those times. the nfl draft will pick up in the fourth round today. the 49ers will be the second team to pick, and it is pretty clear the 49ers are focused on adding speed. jim harbough picked runningback michael james. he had more than 1800 yards rushing last season. the niners selected a.j. general

during a ceremony at san francisco pier 33. they signed an agreement after months of delays and negotiation. crews are already transforming pier 27 into the event's racing village. race organizers hit some rough waters that resulted in development plans being scaled back, but city leaders say the impact of the event will last well beyond 2013. >> while there is three months of intense activation, once the america's cup is gone we'll have a new cruise ship terminal and have extended outdoor public access here. >> the race is estimated to generate millions of dollars in revenue for the city that hosts it. also to create thousands of jobs. they are expecting a huge crowd today at santana row in san jose, not really because of the shopping but because of celebrity chef giada delaurentis.

morning. and you might see some extra traffic there because of the doyle drive demolition. doyle drive demolition there. thank you so much for joining us on this saturday. i'm kris sanchez along with rob mayeda. if you had a big job to do outside, like demolish a bridge. >> good luck getting out of yard work today. no excuses for you today. it's a little chilly. we had clear skies overnight, but this time of the year we can still get the 40s in the morning. we are seeing that in the inland valleys. one of the things to watch this afternoon, the northwest winds are picking up 10 to 20 miles per hour. mostly clear skies, some patches of low clouds near the coast. as high pressure builds in to our west, we'll see the storm track up to the north and as early as mid-afternoon it looks pretty nice. trivalley, north bay valleys, the northwest winds are drying out the air and warming it up. santa rosa, napa, fairfield and antioch, some of the warmer locations. tomorrow we'll add 5 degrees to the temperatures. we'll show you the rest of the

gate bridge. we are watching live this morning as it is being demolished. the entire approach from 101 will be shut down until monday morning. you see the crews there hard at work. they have been at it for quite some time now. now the general consensus is stay away from the golden gate this weekend. you can see a lot of folks are heeding that advice with traffic moving along smoothly, though it is very light this morning. even if you're not planning on using the golden gate bridge this weekend, the bay bridge could be severely impacted as well as thousands of people trying to reroute their journey into san francisco. there is a giants game tonight. folks could be using the bay bridge for that. prepare for your weekend plan and make sure you plan ahead for a ferry or to reroute. we have complete coverage of the doyle drive closure, including animations of the new project on our website, nbcbayarea.com.

just before 2:00 friday morning a caller reported that a man was stabbed outside of a home in the rose garden neighborhood. the 51-year-old man died at valley medical center. police say they tried to talk with people in the home on cleveland avenue where the call was made, but the man who answered the door refused to cooperate. police had information that there might have been guns inside the home so they called in the s.w.a.t. team forcing neighbors to evacuate before the man finally gave himself up. >> i think it was a little bit of both, a combination of the officers actually being up there continuing to try to have contact with the individual and at some point he actually came out to my understanding. so there was no front on the confrontation or anything of that nature. he was cooperative at that point. >> there were several people inside the home at the time. they were all taken on to the police department for questioning. well, when we talk about silicon valley innovation, tech usually comes to mind, but many groundbreaking and life-changing procedures are pioneered here, too. and for one little girl, that is music to her new ears.

here's a story you will only see on nbc bay area ch. >> this does not show up on the ultrasound. until they handed her to us, we didn't know she would be born without ears. >> reporter: they are outer ear canals never developed. instead, solid bone between where her ears should have been and her inner ear. at that time bobby's parents were told she would never hear and thus never learn to speak, but the parents refused the diagnosis and went to the california ear institute in east palo alto. three years ago doctors pioneered a surgery to construct the ear canal and build the outer ear in just one ten-hour outpatient surgery. >> they do it in the morning and you're sent back to the hotel that night. so just the fact that it could be done so quickly was by far the best option for us. >> psychologically for a child it's wonderful to get it done

one time. four or five times to the operating room is a lot to deal with in the first few years of life, so i like that part of it. but the safety and outcome are more important to me than that. >> reporter: for bobby the outcome is nearly perfect. her ears are built out of a surgical plastic and her new skin. soon she'll ditch the hearing aid and is already wearing sunglasses and got her ears pierced. >> when you look at the ear from affair, you don't notice any different. if you look closely you'll see scars and things, but most people don't ever pick that up. >> my teacher doesn't know. zblr your teacher doesn't know in soon bobby will return to maine and she'll remember disneyla disneyland. >> she'll look back and see pictures but for the most part she doesn't remember not having any ear. >> reporter: and that's exactly what her doctors were hoping for. we still have more ahead for

and we are looking live at the doyle drive demolition. we are watching that for you. it is supposed to be done by monday morning. we'll keep track of their timeline. there's a major crackdown on distracted driving underway, which is now being called a national public health crisis. as nbc bay area's reporter has this story, there's a new thing to target teenagers. >> reporter: just a few weeks ago a father and daughter were hit by a teenager driver here in concord. the cause of the crash has not yet been determined, but it's one more incident that has

safety advocates pushing teenagers to pay attention while behind the wheel. if you're texting or have your ear to the phone while driving, california highway patrol is looking for you. we rode along with chp as they targeted distracted drivers. within minutes we spotted drivers with phone in hand. >> as i went through the intersection i saw this, and we have teenager kids and try to let them know to keep their eyes on the road, don't text. i am guilty. >> reporter: staff and safety advocates gathered at this local high school saying teenagers are most at risk. >> you wouldn't get in a car with someone drinking, what would you do? take the keys from someone drinking and driving. we want to get there with cell phones. don't get in the car with someone using cell phones. tell them to turn off the phone while in the car. >> reporter: courtney butler

says using the car while driving is all too common and it scares her. >> i'm in cars with people who text frequently. they say, oh, i only do it at stoplights but then i'll see them on the freeway and they are doing a little side texting. i'm like, can we not do that? i want to live to see tomorrow. >> reporter: it's a message that has even more meaning on the heels of the tragic deaths of a concord father and daughter hit and killed by a teenager driver. the cause of the accident hasn't been determined. many feel it is one more example of how careful young new drivers need to be. >> there's nothing you can do to take the pain away that the family is going to feel. the only thing we can offer through our program is to continue to try to prevent other tragedies such as the one that happened to the family here by saying how critical this is. >> reporter: april is national distracted driver awareness month. you'll probably see the signs up on the freeway. the chp has issued 3,000 tickets

outside. 40s and 50s out there. clear skies. not much wind right now, but by the afternoon we'll see northwest winds picking up, probably from 10 to 20 miles per hour. when we get the northwest winds that means places like santa rosa tend to warm up and we'll see that especially come tomorrow. so the inland valleys today, lots of 70s. tomorrow we'll see a few more 80s popping up. then we'll continue to see mainly mild conditions and our temperatures are not changing much here as we go through the next few days, mainly mild conditions. the radar view is quite dry, which is a nice change. this system that brought us rain into wednesday night and thursday now dropping quite a bit of active weather across the midwest. actually, there's some snow there out toward the northern rockies, but mainly dry conditions across the west coast as high pressure starts to build in. storm track going off to the north, so if the northwesterly winds are on the coast, a little mild. we'll see breezy conditions, but inland we'll see numbers climbing 70s to near 80 today. warming up a little bit more come tomorrow into monday.

in the hour-by-hour forecast, not much for clouds at the coast. we could see some approach the coast wrapping up the weekend, but a nice forecast for the bay area today. santa clara valley south, mid to upper 70s. close to 80 out by pleasanton. and as you get over towards solano county, fairfield, napa, the north bay, we see the northwesterly winds with things drying up and warming up for the afternoon. still mainly 60 on the coast, but for the inner bay we'll see temperatures warming up a little bit. as you wrap up the weekend, here you go. the three-day forecast, taking a look at the rest of the weekend, trending warmer tomorrow. monday looks pretty nice. one thing you'll notice, though, we'll see more low clouds on the coast and a cooling trend for the second half of the week. but looking pretty nice there as we roll into may there. can. thank you, rob. a lot of folks could be getting squeezed over federal student loans. the republican-controlled house has passed a bill that would prevent the interest rate on those loans from doubling. but the democrats say they will

veto the bill because the two sides cannot agree on where the money should come from. business and tech reporter scott budman shows us what bay area college up students think about the fight. >> we need more college garage walts because they are the future leaders iffer the country. >> reporter: in this san jose state classroom, the majority of this teacher's students have taken out student loan and are following the political battle over the interest rates on the loan closely. >> it stops the cycle of growth in the economy and growth as a person. >> reporter: they know in the interest rate goes up, so does the amount of time they will be paying them off. >> even with the prospect of jobs, there are so many people graduating and so many people wanting to go to college, you're going to end up working at mcdonald's and then have to pay off loans before you can get an apartment, before you get a house, before you have children or get a new nice car. and so you can't do that if you have debt. >> reporter: without a bill to keep the interest rate steady, it will climb from 3.4% to 6.8%

this summer, a drag for the students who really don't care whether the republicans or democrats win the battle. >> i'm worried about students' ability to get through school. and then if they finish school and they have tens of thousands of dollars of debt, that limits their options. i mean, that limits the kind of jobs they can take on. because they have to be thinking of the bottom line, can i afford to pay for my debts? >> reporter: interestingly, this class includes lucas, an exchange student from france, where he, thanks to government health, pays a lot less to go to college. >> we can help you, it is our duty for you to give and provide you the means to go to school. >> reporter: a lesson in more than one government and its relationship to higher education. scott budman, "today in the bay." >> the senate controlled by democrats is promising to defeat

the bill as it currently stands. the democrats are promising to come up with the money through tax cuts, but republicans say by cutting back on president obama's health care plan they can afford to help shore up the students education. they are done on voting on whether to strike a newly proposed contract. 24,000 member os of the faculty association began casting ballots on 16. the majority vote would allow a two-day rolling strike this fall affecting as many as 400,000 students across 23 campuses. >> i think the results will be overwhelming. we don't know what they are yet, but i would say the turnout was very high. people were enthusiastic about the prospects of standing up for themselves. >> the board of trustees claims that union demands would increase faculty compensation by $500 million a year. since the voting started the board has offered to resume talks. results will be announced next

wednesday. the last survivor who helped to build the golden gate bridge, 75 years ago, has passed away. we received word that jack mistrere died last week of natural causes. he was one of the youngest men to be hired to work on the bridge at the young age of 17 years old. and we still have more ahead on "today in the bay." including more on why there are more recruits in the city of san jose in terms of the fire department. also coming up this morning, someone steal's a guy's truck, but his ipad saves the day. we'll show you how.

bringing or breathing a sigh of relief after finding his stolen truck and couldn't have done it without his ipod. reporter katherine cook has his story. >> reporter: this man owns this restaurant in vancouver. he works hard to fulfill his dream, but when he left thursday morning for his restaurant, he encountered a nightmare. >> i looked for my truck, normally it is right there. >> reporter: thieves had broken into the restaurant, stolen booze, cash, ipads and the key to his truck. >> this was my dream truck. when i first came out, it took me a long time to achieve that. >> reporter: he called police and remembered he left the ipad in his truck. he used that to run his restaurant and thought maybe this would could lead him back to his truck. >> i thought of tracking with other devices because my ipad was inside the truck. i pull it out and then i went to my apps and looked for finding
