♪ it's gonna be bright bright sunshiny day ♪ live claritin clear with non-drowsy claritin. this morning on toby -- "today in the bay" a crime scene after a deadly shooten. now a piece of history just a pile of rubble. the work on doyle drive and whether it will be ready for monday morning commute. and an underage house party turns dededly. what we learned about the chaotic scene just ahead. you're looking live at oakland. this is "today in the bay." looking live at the golden gate bridge, a little foggier

than yesterday, but still some low traffic flow bouf that doyle drive demolition that's under way. first, we want to say good morning, and thank you for joining us. i'm kris sanchez like with meteorologist rob mayeda, the forecast is changing. >> it will like a little like our summer microclimates. it should be warmer this afternoon than yesterday. 40s and 50s outside right now, so fairly comfortable, not too breezy outside, but watch 2:00 and 3:00 this afternoon. we'll see the sea breeze pick up, which will push some low clouds across the cost. for the coast today looking at highs in the low 60s. for the upper bay, places like pleasanton, livermore and areas south of san jose should see close to 80 today, but i do want to show you the satellite view. we do have high clouds approaches the coast and increasing chances of seeing -- it's no longer april showers, but may showers. we'll show you in the seven-day

forecast with the full weekend forecast in just a few minutes. thank you very much, rob. we begin with developing news in the south bay. a teenager is dead, shot and killed on an elementary school campus in san jose. now officers are trying to track down the person who pulled the trigger. people near lowell elementary called 911, saying they heard gunshots. when officers arrived they found an 18-year-old with at least one gunshot wound. paramedics arrived on the scene only to find out it was too late to save the youngman. the victim's name will not be released until the family is notified. we can tell you this is san jose's 12th killing of the year. new this morning, a fremont house party turned violent overnight. officers say the man was found bleeding outside the house party near hyde park and yellowstone drive. officers say it is unclear whether the man was shot or

stabbed. several people have been detained. no one is under arrest yet. officers say many of the guests at that party appeared to be teenagers, possibly just out of high school. in oakland overnight, a by stander who tried to break up an argument is in serious trouble this morning. a burger king t strahan mere broadway and 13th on saturday night. witnesses say a man who appeared to be drink walked into the restaurant and started arguing with an elderly woman. a by stander took that man outside, then there was a fight. police say the by stander punched the first man who fell and hit his head. he later died at the hospital. the bystander fled the scene on a mountain bike. police are not searching for him. this morning another deadly yacht race, this time along the southern california coastline. the new per ocean sailing association says a yacht plowed into a much larger ship late

friday or early assert near the coronado islands. they are searching the water for that missing crew member. searchers already found the bodies of three other sailors from the yacht. the coast guard says the conditions were fine for sailing, so the cause of the crash is still under investigation. that yacht withdraws among more than 200 yachts which were participating in the annual contest. now for an update of the deadly yacht race two weeks ago, the body of one of the four people still missing has been recovered. 25 years old jordan fundamentm recovered. three people are still missing, and are presumed dead. the reward in the disappearance of morgan hill teenager sierra lamar more than double this weekend.

it was up from $10,000 to $25,000. the family says that additional money came from fund-raising efforts and from one generous downer. on saturday about 150 volunteers helped in the search effort. it was organized by the klaas kid organization. >> there's still a great resolve with this this community to find this young girl. i think it's absolutely enorm s enormous. i think this is a community that has so much to be proud of. >> 15 years old sierra lamar has been missing since she left for school. since her disappearance more than 5,700 people have volunteered to try to help find her. this morning demolition work is right on target to reopen during the morning community. you're looking live at the round the clock work on doyle drive which connects north bay commuters to the golden gate

bridge and to san francisco. stephanie tron has a look. >> it looks like a bunch dinosaurs feeding on something over there. chomps that thing apart. >> reporter: it's a part of history that they didn't want their kids to miss, the demolition of doyle drive. >> it's really exciting to see. it's been 20 years in the planning, and it's great to see it finally happening. >> reporter: a spokesperson says the project is right on schedule thanks to round the clock work and light traffic, helping caltrans crew finish. while construction continues for the next three years on what will be the new presidio parkway. >> we got to see them punching through the rod and a bunch of

20 years ago, four officers were acquitted, setting off deadly riots that left parts of los angeles toorched and changed forever. more than 50 people died and protesters caused billions in property damage. it brought the country to publicly address the issues of race and brutality. lester hold sad down with rodney king and asked him about the five famous words he spoke. >> whose idea was it for you to go public and to say something? >> i wanted to say something, you know, but i -- i didn't action i pulled back and finally the lawyer asked me, can you say something? >> can we all get along? >> he's 41 years old and has had numerous run-ins with the law,

and he released a book. two of the police officers were eventually convict indeed a separate federal trial and served 30 months in prison. the search is over. police found the body of peter keller in a bunker. investigators say it looks lie shot himself to death. he was wanted for allegedly killing his wife and 18-year-old daughter before setting their house on fire. police say he was a survivalist. >> has shelving, food, waters, he had a wood stove. >> remember, we're dealing with somebody who's had eight years to prepare. >> s.w.a.t. teams had to use explosived to break -- it would be destroyed after the investigation is complete. we'll show you the deadly

microclimates start to kick in. this morning a war of words is now erupting between the white house and republicans, as we approach the anniversary of the death of osama bin laden. mike viqueira joins us in washington, d.c. with the details. >> by any measure it was a success. >> now we can report that osama bin laden is dead. >> one year ago wednesday, they went in and killed osama bin laden. now republicans accuse the white house of spiking the football, using the death of bin laden for political gain. >> hello, folks, how are you? >> reporter: the vice president at a campaign rally on thursday. >> if you're looking for a bumper stick to sum up how president obama has handled what we inherited, it's pretty simple -- osama bin laden is dead and general motors is alive. >> reporter: all week administration officials have been doing interviews the

the white house says it's all fair game, part of the president's record on foreign policy. >> i think the way we handled it is -- represents exactly the balance you need to strike. >> that was mike viqueira reporting. to syria where u.n. observers are -- delegates are touring the city of homs, a hotbed of government shelling and clashes between syrian forces and rebels. the u.n. sent 15 monitors into syria to maintain a peace plan. but both sides continue to attack. more than 9,000 people have died during the 13-month uprising. at least one protester is dead and 30 others are injured during overnight clashes in cairo. witnesses say police and government troops did not make an attempt to stop that violence. the protesters were supporters

of a politician who was disqualified if next month's presidential election. in colombia, a french journalist is missing. the journalist was covering an army and police mission to destroy drug labs. four security force members were killed. several others were wounded. the colombian government reports that five our troops are also missing. it is holding more than five -- rather 400 civilians hostage. in china, heavy rains continue to pummel the southern part of the country. the storms are making a mess of streets and homes. about 8,000 people have been evacuated from the hardest-hit areas. at least one person is missing after a series of mudslides as well. strong winds also uprooted trees. this morning, one person is dead and several others are injured after high winds swept

through a beer tent in missouri. 200 people were garded in the tent after the cardinals game on saturday when the winds kicked up outside a sports bar near busch stadium. the department of safety says 50-mile-per-hour winds shattered the poles, blowing the tent onto nearby train tracks. more than 100 were treated on the scene. >> heads were butted open, people were giving cpr. it was crazy. >> the owner of the bar thats howed the crowd said it was lightsening and not the wind that killed the patron, but the fire department is not confirming that. tornado sirens blared throughout the city after a funnel cloud sighting. . for a look at weather here in the bay area, we'll check in with meteorologist rob mayeda, and we have a much tamer forecast ahead today. we do.

around here things are quite tame, but across the plains today, it does look like we're setting up for more severe weather. let's show you the radar quickly. you can see st. louis with flash flood warnings, missouri over to illinois, and in kansas, but a ne from oklahoma city down to amarillo. we could see more severe weather possibly, some super cells that should produce some tornadoes perhaps later on towards the asp. back to the west coast, you could see not much happening. we've got high pressure off to the west, so things are quite clear and calm, except low clouds coming back to the coast. 40s and 50s outside. we'll see the sea breeze pick up more as we go through the afternoon. from about 15 to 25 miles an hour. inland spots should warm up, maybe close to 80 in a few spots, but the trend for the week ahead will be trending cooler, more low clouds over the next couple mornings and actually a chance of showers

wednesday night into thursday. right now the high clouds coming down the coast, eventually showers back into seattle and portland. the storm track will move more west to east as we go through the workweek, not quite hitting the bay around, kind of glancing through the north bay, and yes the chance of those thursday showers. here the low clouds we see on the cost. some high bands coming in. more clouds along the coast, a sign of a deepening marine layer and stronger sea breeze which will lead to our temperatures cooling down, but today looking pretty nice, close to 80 and parts of the south bay, upper 70s around milpitas and sunnyvale, toward locations in the trivalley, looks like pleasanton and lever more should be some of the warm spots. then notice how the temperatures start to cool off. pacifica looking at low clouds, fog, probably some mist at times today.

inland northwest breezes should bring temperatures up, maybe close to 80 in some of those north bay valleys. today will be the warmest day we'll see this week. the graduate but steady cooling trend, and then the best bet for seeing a bit of rain especially from san francisco northward, that would come wednesday night. wee be clear out and next week warming up, maybe not as warm as this week, but pretty nice. little fits and spurts. we don't mind that. >> sure. well, he might have been wearing a tux, but the fancy attire and the setting did not keep jimmy kimmel from taking aim at the world of politics last night at the and white house correspondents dinner. >> what a collection of people here. in one room members of the media, politicians, corporate executives, advertisers, lobbyists and celebrities. everything that is wrong with american is here in this room tonight. >> he was the mast offer ceremonies at the hitting in

died after the truck he was riding in ran a red light while driving to the hospital. she was riding along with several other passengers who were taking a stabbing victim to the hospital. police say they may have been part of an arier street fight involving several people. three people were stabbed with two victims driving themselves to a hospital. police are looking for three suspects in the stabbings. new this morning a driver now under arrest and being treated at the hospital for leading police on a chance all the way to the south bay. officers say the driver refused to pull over after officers tried to stop him for an apparent cell phone violation. the driver went to hayward where he jumped on 880 south. chp officers laid down a spike strip. the car drifted into the dirt

where it hit a phone books and a tree. the driver was unconscious and rushed to a nearby hospital. police say they are doing a dui evaluation to see if alcohol played a factor. antioch police are investigating an overnight fatal shooting which may have been an accident. this happened saturday night at a home a cambridge drive. police say a 41-year-old man was inspecting a gun, his 36-year-old brother had brought over. while looking at it, the again went off. the older brother called 911 and is cooperaten with police. this morning volunteers are trying to keep hope alive after another search turned up no sign of missing teenager sierra lamar. as kimberly tere reports, the family is hoping for a major announcement and hoping a bigger reward will reveal new clues. >> there's no way that she could

have disappeared without anyone seeing anything. >> in the hopes of generating new leads in the casing of missing 15 years old sierra, her family announced that the reward jumped to $25,000 thanks to private donations and fund-raising efforts. >> most important thing is getting her home. if this is one way to do it, we're happy. >> reporter: another 150 volunteers fanned out in the area surrounding her morgan hill home where she was last seen march 16th. >> i'm are moment. i can't imagine what she's going through. i try to support her as best i can, you know, but i think most of the gals on my search today are moms. >> reporter: law enforcement has been sending dive teams into local reservoirs and waterways, but still no major clues. >> it's getting harder. >> the outpouring of support has

its emergency room to rehope as a rehabilitation center. they hospitals include -- this morning demolition work is right on target to reopened in time for the morning commute. we are looking live at some of the work that now looks slow, though the crews are working, and they have been since 8:00 on friday. this is doyle drive, which of course connects north bay commuters to the golden gate bridge and on into san francisco. doyle drive is now just a pile of rubble, as they lay groundwork. hundreds of people stopped by chrissy field to watch that piece of history turn to rubble. >> when they were pulling down part of the roadway, which was fun, we got to see them punching

through the road, and trying to knock it down. >> rob says it's ten football field longs. >> and about 30 feet high. it's amazing to see how much work has already been done. people heededed warnings, mike inooh -- why do we love demolition so much. oak lend's fire department and other emergency services will take part in a simulated earthquake responsibilities drill in just about an hour. this will happen in several parts of the city. hundreds of volunteers and dozens of neighborhood groups are participating. it runs until this afternoon at noon. coming up, is san francisco the new silicon valley? how the city by the bay is stealing some of the south bay's thunder just ahead.

policy institute of california, a very nice nonpartisan operation in san francisco, statewide survey finds that only 54% support the tax increases, that's the sales tax and income tack for higher level earners. that's very worrisome, because you're just not going to be there. 54% is not good. >> almost all the $7 billion that would come from these temporary increases would fund public education. does this speak to how people feel about public education, or just their own personal economy? >> it's a good question. the irony is voters understand, they get it, they understand the poor shape of public education in california. that same ppic survie, 81% believe that public education

has been hurt. 60% are concerned with the deteriorating quality of ed indicates. and another piece of data, 58% are worried about teacher layoffs, which is understandable, because california has the highest -- the highest student to teacher ratio in the nation. there are a lot of numbers here. sometimes we get blurred, but the fact is voters get it, they get the relationship between taxes, education, and many just don't want to pay more. >> is it a funding issue that's overstated? >> again, we go to the data. according to education week, which is a national periodically, very well respected. >> i get it. >> okay. california now ranked 47th. last i heard there were 50 states, 47th in per capita spending, and here are the results of the investment in california.

coast, dhl lead to a thickening of the marine layer and cooling as we get back to the workweek. today the warmers day of the next seven days. close to 80 in san jose. and santa rosa looking good, but on the coast a different story. almost like our summer microclimates. probably a sea breeze picking up for the gametime temperature probably close to 60. so your three-day forecast, today the warmest day, trending cooler. then wednesday and thursday from san francisco northward, that's going to be the time to watch. we will several see cooler terms and more clouds, but i think there's a good chance for rain in the north bay. it will be clearing and breezy. as we get towards next weekend, trending warmer. we hope that rain arrives, because it's nasty for allergies
