oakland after another might of violent confrontation with protesters. >> followed a day of mayday rallies across the bay area. most of them peaceful except certainly for a few. christie smith joins us live in oakland where things got ugly overnight. good morning. >> good morning to you. we still see a few police cars sitting around downtown oakland, keeping an eye on things. i can tell you that the crowds are gone. much quieter now than it was last night. when you drive around you can certainly see the damage from last night. a number of businesseses are boarded up this morning. there are graffiti. we are at the plaza which seems to be the center of the protests. up to that -- mayday march and demonstration, really started out peaceful very early yesterday morning her in h oakland. but the situation deteriorated as the day went on. oakland police this morning reporting they made 25 arrests, including one felony for assaulting an officer. by noontime plibs made an azpres police say people threw bottles

and paint at them. other objects at them. refused to disperse. they used tear gas a number of times. the playerups between police and protesters were quick. by 8:00 p.m. police are telling tuesday crowd of a thousand shrank to a few hundred in the downtown area. police say that the number of bank windows were broken. a police car set on fire. another car fire. opd van vandalized. a number of news vans had their windows broken, tires slashed as well. but it looks like just in the quick drive around we did this morning, the public works department got on it rather quickly because just about everything is already boarded up. reporting live in oakland, christie smith, "today in the bay." in san francisco, protesters still occupying a vacant building now. it all started yesterday afternoon where activists dismantled police barricades and entered the building owned by the catholic archdiocese. some protesters climbed up on the roof and started throwing bricks and pups right out into

the crowd below. hitting another protester. people with occupy san francisco say that was not part of their plan. >> people yelling at him to stop. >> the brick was thrown at that time officers video the situation. it struck another one of the demonstrators. >> out of control there. police arresting 34-year-old jessie nesbit on felony aggravated charges for tossing that brick. the man who was hit refused medical treatment. the cost of prespeech, a heavy one for cash-strapped cities. oakland city manager temg nbc bay area as of february 27 the last time the city crunched those numbers, the occupy oakland movement costing the city $3.7 million. most of it $3.1 million going towards overtime important police officers and other city employees. some $600,000 has been spent in operations for maintenance costs, equipment, and other

tree branches before running into a building. the hydrant set a river of water flowing right down the streets. month word on the driver's condition. south bay family questioning the response by san jose firefighters to a deadly fire at their home. this is an update to breaking news we brought you yesterday. that fire killed a mother and left her young son brain dead. the family claims rescue crews did not do enough to save act 6-year-old boy after pulling him from that burning town home in east san jose. san jose fire tiers, they say that they were in rescue mode and saving lives as always they are priority one. >> the young boy was unconscious. i believe he was not breathing when we pulled him out. so he's alive at the hospital. the paramedics and firefighters, you know, did everything they could to save his life. he is on a ventilator. >> no cpr or oxygen was given to

the child. and they left the child there unconscious. he was will five minutes. >> a tough story there. five other family members, including the boy's pear did survive the fire. and investigators say that fire started in the garage. in the south bay, the search for 15-year-old sierra lamar continues this morning. hundreds of volunteers will search the hills and fields around morgan hill today. now more than six weeks since sierra lamar disappeared. sheriff's dive team used sonar scanners again yesterday to check several areas. a man lost his job after giving away $300 worth of tickets to a teenager in need. the man told the san francisco chronicle he was fired yesterday. he gave the 16-year-old unused tickets so he could use the tickets to get to school.

he knew it could cost him his job but he wanted to help the teen. he said he plans to appeal his firing to the board. dozens of students and teachers boarding bus that's morning in san jose to visit lawmakers in sacramento. the annual bus trip for education taking representatives from several santa clara county schools up to the state capitol. california voters may put more bite into food labeling. activists say that they do have enough signatures for the state's first proposition to require labeling of genetically engineered food. they say that california right to know campaign is aimed at giving families information and informed choices on what they eat and feed their children. a rally will be held this morning at the steps of san francisco's city hall it is a group delivers all of its signatures. >> you may want to have a picnic outdoors today. last day of 70-something. >> yes. we are back in the 60s tomorrow

working to help defeat barack obama come november. >> it is 4:45. facebook is set to go public in less than lee weeks and wall street certain sly looking forward to it. for more that and the rest of our news before the bell, we turn to jackie deangelis live at cnbc world headquarters. good morning, jackie. >> good morning, laura. mark your calender. reports saying facebook will start meeting with investors next week to promote the upcoming ipo. that means the ipo could be scheduled for may 18. facebook will trade its shares on the nasdaq. reports saying the founder, mark zuckerberg, will be involved in the road show. facebook looking to raise at least $5 billion in what could be the biggest internet ipo ever. the futures are pointing to a lower open on wall street this morning. manufacturing activity in europe is slowing. we saw stocks rising on tuesday. closing off their highs after a report here in the u.s. showed a surprise increase in manufacturing last month. ease something concerns about the economic recovery here in

francisco. feels like it is a little cooler out there today. not a bad day ahead. colder later in the week. christina loren will fill you in on the forecast. belmont school leaders will discuss a controversial project at a local high school's football field. the high school wants to spend more than $900,000 to upgrade the high school's football stadium. it plans to install a 07-foot tall lights at each corner of the field and put in a new p.a. system. the group of neighbors concerned about the noise hired a lawyer to try to reduce how often the school uses the lights for night games. the district says it will address those concerns and look at an environmental study of that project. giants fans who stayed up late important this one probably sad they did. matt cain up on the mound pitching a strong game against the marlins at at&t park. unfortunately the rest of the team is suffering a power outage. top of the fifth. marlins up 1-0. cain gives up two runs in the ninth. that one hurts. home run to john carlos stanton
