sugar barge road. officers say that the suspects fled from police in oakley and then shot at officers hitting a police cruiser. fortunately nobody was injured. we have a crew on the way now to that scene. we will, of course, keep you updated and bring you a live report later on in the show. to developing news linked to a bay area wide day of action. police clashes cost building takeovers, plunging a peaceful day of protests into chaos. this morning, dozens are under arrest after reports of arson and assaults on officers in oakland. christie smith joins us live from oakland this morning it is a city is trying the regroup after a night of vandalism and destruction. >> reporter: good morning to you. we just took a quick walk around the gala plaza. i can tell you that will are at least three or four police cruisers just sitting around but the crowd has gone -- a lot of windows boarded up and there is some graffiti downtown. you can see here we are by a coffee shop. three windows up.

people upset with police walking around. seems like everyone had cameras yesterday. i wanted to show you as well that there are symbols spray painted as well. at a" with a circle around it. we shot individuvideo a little ago. it is boarded up this morning. windows broken after the mayday protest yesterday. it got started early in the downtown oakland area over issues including financial inequality and among other things. mostly peaceful, thousands of people. by 12:30 police say that it started to turn ugly. people were throwing things at them, bottles, paint, they they are say when they tried to mick an arrest officers were surrounded and it got violent. they r tear gas into the crowd. police tell us this morning that they are looking at the mums, 25 people arrested, including a nell my arrest for assault on an

officer. banks and business windows, again, boarded up, police cars set on fire. news vans damaged. our news van has paint it as well. one of the things oakland police said they wanted to get the public works crews out here very quickly so that people showing up this morning can go ahead and get back to business as usual. i can tell you that there are a lot of businesses boarded up. not a lot of broken windows. you don't see a lot of damage. it looks like they made quick work of the cleanup. reporting live in oakland. the cost of free speech a very heavy one for cash-strapped cities. we talked to oakland city's manager karen boyd and confirms that the following numbers for us. as of february 27, last time the city crunched the numbers, the occupy oakland movement costing the city $3.7 million. most of it is $3.1 million going towards overtime for police officers and other city employees. some $600,000 has been spent in

operations and maintenance costs for equipment and other services. the total cost to the city will go up. obviously after the mayday demonstrations and the clashes with ocd. we will have full coverage of the aftermath throughout the entire morning. and on our website, nbcbayarea.com. search mayday. 5:03 now. a tragedy this morning. a mother is dead, her 6ier old son is brain dead. following a devastating fire. now the family is asking why. >> firefighters pulled the boy from the burning town home early tuesday morning in east san jose. five other family members, including the boy's father survived the fire. some members are questioning whether fire crews did enough. some firefighters say they were in rescue mode . >> the young boy was unconscious. he was not breathing when we pulled him out. he is alive at the hospital. paramedics and firefighters, you know, did everything they could to save his life. he is on a ventilator.

>> no cpr or oxygen was given to the child. and they left the child there unconscious. he was there five minutes. >> investigators say the fire started in the garage. firefighters say that there was a smoke detector inside the town home. it is not clear if it was working or damaged by the fire. assault rifles, fake ids, san francisco police department uniform. a few of the items found inside of a storage locker belonging to a teenager accused of stealing a celebrity chef luxury vehicle. 17-year-old max michael wade now facing a slew of charges, including -- suspected crime spree. officers also found shotgun shells and equipment for jamming cell phones and raid wroes. all of this along with a stolen yellow lambourghini similar to this one belonging to bay area celebrity chef guy fiari. officers searched that storage locker in richmond after linking the teen to a shooting in mill

valley in april. that teen is now charged as an adult for two counts of attempted murder, vehicle theft, several other charges. the coast guard may lift a temporary ban on offshore racing in time for the 2012 race at the end of the month. coastard ordered the open ocean waters off-limits to racing after the deadly yacht accident near the fair lawn islands that killed five crew members. an independent panel will spend about a month reviewing the events that led to the tragedy. the findings and recommendations will be released. walnut creek city leaders passing a controversial new ordinan ordinance, impacting every bar, club and restaurant that serves alcohol. the city council unanimously approving the new alcohol restrictions and at a meeting on tuesday night. now under this new law. all bars may be required to have security and adhere to alcohol cutoff times. some have been exempt from that 2004 law that set rules for bars

and restaurants. now bar owners are threatening a lawsuit if the ordinance passes. dozens of south bay students and teachers making their way to sacramento to demand action for education. marla tellez with where their journey will begin. >> reporter: this is not a first. this is the tenth year in a row, as a matter of fact, that folks are going to be making the bus trip from san jose to sacramento. no one here just yet. they are expected to start arriving at 6:00 for 6:30 departure from the east ridge mall parking lot. the toll bus trip is organized by santa clara county supervisor dave cortez. i spoke to someone from his office a few minutes ago. he tells me they are expect morgue than 100 people, that includes residents, students, and faculty from santa clara county. now in terms of students we are talking high schoolers. many from the evergreen area. they are due in sacramento at 9:00. once they get there they get face-to-face time with the state legislators. the spokesperson tells me that

their overall goal today is to ensure that funding has been drastically cut top. to make sure the funding stay it is same they say they cannot afford any more cuts. compaincidentally it is a big d for the california faculty association. it is going to announce its vote on whether or not they plan to strike. they are angry with the priorities of the management. according to the website they say, quote, the quality of the education they can deliver is being ignored, unquote. now that announcement is expected at noon today. if they do decide to strike it will be the largest university strike in california history. it is 5:07 now. meteorologist christina loren joining us with the update on what could happen wednesday and beyond. chilly today. >> a little chilly today. hey, it is wednesday. we are going to help you get over that hum and get to you work time. good news is you don't have any thick fog out there just yet.

raided aaa where the protesters are holed up starting yesterday afternoon. they have been inside ever since. law enforcement is on the first floor of the building right now. we can see on the second floor some of the protesters looking wrought side the window which indicates to us that police have not actually reached the protesters. we have seen them bringing out some barricades that the protesters were using to barricade themselves up to the second floor. right now, there's probably, i'm guessing, a dozen, maybe a couple dozen police inside while outside in riot gear you have probably another dozen, maybe a couple dozen police that established a perimeter out here. so -- they would -- like i said about ten minutes ago. no one is copping out as far as the protests and law enforcement coming in and out. looks like they are just trying to reach those protesters up there on the second floor. so we will have live pictures for you shortly. bob redell, "today in the bay." >> listening to bob live at that

tuesday. check pre-market action. jackie deanne jealous of cnbc. >> good morning, scott. the futures are pointing to a lower open on wall street this morning. following data showing manufacturing activity in europe is slowing. we did see stocks rise tuesday. they did close off their high after a report showed a surprise increase in u.s. manufacturing last month. ease something of the concerns about the economic recovery here in the states. and the asian markets were higher overnight. european markets mixed. we are going to get data on hiring the private sector and we just got earnings from comcast and the parent of nbc universal. we saw the dow rising 65 points. 13,279. new 4 1/2 year high. nasdaq adding four points to 3,050. are you a master tweeter? goldman sachs may want to talk to you. the bank looking for a associate am media strategist to handle its presence on facebook, twitter. goldman may want to change their

>> a great looking forecast to get to. let's get right to that. we are in the 40s and 50s. touch cooler out there this morning. as we head throughout the afternoon temperatures will climb into the mid 60s by noon today. we are going to round out the day with 70s. it works out like this. area of low pressure came through overnight. cooler air and increase the flow. a breeze like yesterday. temperatures running cooler as a result. and as you will notice more cloud cover out there especially the coastline. you do not get out of the clouds for long yesterday in san francisco. your temperatures were not all that warm. today just about the same. i have only brought your numbers down by three to five degrees at the coast. it all works out like this. showers between the hours of 7:00 and 11:00 thursday. after that, a nice clear sky. we wake up on friday morning. already see those breaks clearing right here at 5:00 a.m. so 69 degrees in san jose.

and dozens of arrests. good morning, everybody. thank you very much for joining us. the time is 5:28. i'm jon kelley. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. this morning police are still patrolling the streets after mayday protests turn ugly in several parts of the bay area. christie smith is live in oakland where protesters clashed with police well into the night. but we begin with bob redell. live in san francisco where police have just moved in on protesters holed up inside of a vacant building. good morning, bob. >> reporter: yeah, good morning to you. this is a vacant building owned by archdiocese of san francisco here, 888 church street. this is a building protesterses began occupying roughably 12 hours ago. yesterday afternoon. this was the scene a half hour ago where san francisco police along with the san francisco sheriff's office arrived on the scene and rushed into the building. there's probably maybe a dozen, two dozen officers that went inside and they had been inside ever since. we did see some some protesters on the second floor looking out

the window within the past hour. and it is hard to tell what's going on inside right now. we did see police remove some barricades that had been brought inside by the protesters. and it is not clear if they are still trying to access the second floor where the protesters are at. or if they are making arrests. they did go in and brought a dog in that belongs to one of the protesters. that dog is chained up outside. the meantime, you have a couple of dozen officers out here in riot gear. there was at least one that had a bean bag shotgun, just keeping a perimeter around the building. this was the scene yesterday. police did try to prevent these protesters from going inside yesterday. they tried setting up barricades. they were overwhelmed by the crowd and at one point a man was automobile to get on top of the roof through -- threw a brick into the crowd and aiming at a police officer and instead hitting a protester and remarkably that person is okay. refusing medical attention on the scene.

there was another person who threw metal pipes into the crowd. apparently no one was hit by those. the person that threw the pick has been arrested. police eventually let them go inside. they needed written permission from the archdiocese to go in and evict the people which obviously they did get that permission. and right now they are in the process of that i eviction. we have not seen any actual protesters come out. it has been a half hour at aaa church street. bob redell. i will send it to my colleague who is across the bay, christie smith. >> reporter: yes, good morning to you. you know, earlier we were at the plaza wrodowntown oakland. i want to show you what's going on here this morning. crews are out here boarding up broken windows. i counted at least seven upper and lower windows that are completely busted this morning. i spoke with one man and asked how they did it. he thinks protesters pried rocks loose here out front and threw them at the doors last night

after that clash with police turned violent here in oakland. when it got dark, it looked like police became the target of a group of mayday protesters. much smaller than the group that was out earlier protest g financial inequality on this mayday demonstration. people threw bottles, rocks, and paint at oakland police who actually had to fire tear bass and trying to disperse the crowd and say that that crowd refused to leave. bank windows are broke and downtown oakland, small business owners told us that is exactly what they were afraid of. >> a lot of us business owners don't have insurance to cover window breakage or any stuff like that. i just -- i think that they have gone too far. >> reporter: oakland police say that 25 people were arrested last might, including one for assaulting a police officer. also, an arsonist they say who burned up a police car.

police in oakley and shot at officers. bullets hit a police car but no one was injured. we have a report other the scene fwaering information. we will bring you a live updated coming up at 5:45. south bay, the search for sierra lamar continue thing morning. hundreds of volunteers searching the hills and fields around morgan hill today. now more than six weeks since sierra disappeared and the sheriff's dive team using side sonar scanners yesterday. checking out several areas in the south san jose part of town. there have also been five sex on the other hander related arrests. those appear to be indirectly connected to the case. closing arguments will continue this morning in the trial of a suspected gang member accused of gunning down a pear and his would sons. he is accused of killing 48-year-old two people in a cause of mistaken identity. prosecutors described him as a lying, cold-blooded killer who

helped turn san francisco's excelsior district into a hunting ground for a street gang. earlier in the trial ramos testified he was behind the wheel but a passenger pulled the trigger. the defense is expected to begin its closing arguments this morning. also this morning, east bay police asking for your help trying to track down a car that plowed right into a bicyclist and sped away. antioch officers on the lookout for a gold acura sedan with tinted windowses and rim. most likely now with a front-end damage and a broken win windshield. police say that a 30-year-old man was hit by that car riding his bike near the intersection of west 9th and i street on april 24. the cyclist still hospitalized, recovering from serious injuries. 5:35. new this morning. a look at the incredible video in san mateo county. car crashes into a fire hydrant sending streams of water gushing into the air. happened around 2:00 a.m. near the hillcrest boulevard in milbrae.

fire crews spent several hours clearing that flooded street. no word on what caused that crash or if the driver was injured. town hall meeting being held tonight in san bruno to help pipeline explosion victims avoid insurance scams. state insurance commissioner dave jones will offer consumer protection advice to residents affected by the 2010 blast. that includes spotty insurance scams targeting disaster victims. the meeting will be held at the san bruno senior center starting at 6:30 tonight and ending around 7:30. new tactic to stop federal crackdown pot clubs in san francisco. medical marijuana advocates will deliver petitions with thousands of signatures at nancy pelosi's office this afternoon. they are demanding an end to the crackdown and the impending closure of five pot clubs in the city. 16 states, including california, have legalized medical marijuana. but under federal law it is illegal to grow, sell or possess pot. >> 5:36 now. couple of sunny days in the

afghanistan this morning. just hours after president obama made a surprise visit there and addressed the nation in a live televised speech. tracy pots joins us live from capitol hill this morning with more on the secret trip on the anniversary of the death of osama bin laden. good morning. >> good morning. it was under wraps million the president touched down in afghanistan. he almost immediately went to the presidential palace to sign an agreement with karzai, afghan's president to talk about and to officially lay out what our role will be after this war winds down in 2014. one of the essential questions left open, though, not in that agreement, how many troops will be left there. military working that out. >> take this country down. it is spending money we don't have on things we don't need and creating a debt that will

the presidency. a news conference this afternoon. he released a web video on tuesday thanking his supporters and campaign don't others. the former house speaker says he will keep working to help defeat president barack obama in november. san jose now deadlocked on lowering pensions for city workers. the city council split its vote on mayor chuck reid's plan to reduce retirement benefits for future san jose city workers. reid had wanted to scale back pension benefits for all new city workers hired after july 1. except for police and firefighters. reid also wanted to add a cheaper health plan for current and retired city workers. reid's proposal called measure "b" will make it the june ballot. the plan limits pensions for future hires but doesn't spell out a new plan for them or change health benefits. meantime, san jose continuing to outshores graffiti removal to a los angeles based company. the move was supposed to save the city money but the nbc bay
