breaking news coming out san francisco this morning. live pictures where protesters have -- police and protesters clashing once again. they are raiding a vacant building right now that protesters overtook last night. pictures from the roof as it shows the officers taking down the signs the protesters come up, on the ground they are live on the scene, bob redell with

more on what's going on out there. lot of activity, bob. roup good morning to you. we are outside 888 church street. a vacant building that's owned by the archdiocese of san francisco. on top of the two-story building you can see officers. they just arrived there to take down the signs. protesters had put up yesterday. when they began the occupation late yesterday afternoon. down on ground level. you can see three police wagons, one from the sheriff's office. over the past 15 minutes or so, they have been bringing out protesters one by one. pla being arrested and taken away. this all started, this operation, started about an hour ago. here is the scene. at 5:00 straight up this morning, when about about a dozen, maybe a few more officers, from sfpd rushed into the building, went inside and they stayed inside for a good half hour. and at some point they did bring out some police barricades that

had been brought inside while the second floor, we saw protesters looking downstairs. we just spoke with one of the occupy sfo protesters. one of a few actually allowed to leave. he tells thus morning, it is very businesslike and peaceful. that when police entered the building as they were sleeping they put up their hands and surrendered. >> it was totally peaceful, cops came in and we had a conversation. we sat down. again, four or five of us had gotten -- >> reporter: this was the scene yesterday afternoon. take a look at this videotape. police did try to prevent the protesters from going inside. they tried to set up a barricade. they were simply overwhelmed. at one point a man on the roof threw a brick in the crowd. apparently aiming at a police officer. instead hitting a protester. that protester is okay. that man on the roof was

arrested. there was another person on the roof who threw metal pipes on the ground. now people occupy condemn these actions. police chief said those people were both part of the gang of anarchists. we are back out live. an hour into this operation, and police have retake wren the building. again, as you heard that one occupy protester saying that this has been very peaceful this morning. and yesterday there were a couple hundred protesters out here. this morning we understand there are 30 to 40 that had been inside overnight. reporting live here on 1st street in san francisco, bob redell. we will send it across bay to oakland where my to my colleague christie smith. >> reporter: good morning to you, bob. we are over near lake mayor it in oakland. i can tell you that this crew that is out here this morning has their work cut out for them. at least seven or eight windows broken out of this bank. one side of the building. you can see it was hit several times. if we can walk to this side, you can see that they vladers up

over here and that's because some of these windows are broken as well. you can see one way on the top there. this is a california bank and trust. i asked one of the guys who is working out here how they did this. he thinks that they basically pried rock loose or found big rocks out on the street and hurled them at the windows and doors. when demonstrators seemed to turn their anger at oakland police last night throwing rocks and bottles and paint cans. at officers. hours after a mayday protest started where thousands of people marched peace reply over financial inequality. at one point, police launched tear gas into the crowd after they say they were surrounded and the crowd refused to follow orders to leave. some broke out from the main group. started breaking windows and spray painting downtown. that's what some business owners say they were worried about. >> lot of us business owners don't have insurance to cover window breakage or any stuff like that. so -- i -- i just -- i think that they have gone too far.

>> oakland police say that last night they arrested 25 people. one for felony assault on an officer. a police car was burned, a second car burned. a number of news vehicles were damaged, tires slashed, windows broken. we had paint thrown on one of our vans and when you walk around the bank and get a little bit closer this morning, you see stuff like this out here. looks like a piece of asphalt but one of the guys working on it says he thinks this is exact there kind of thing some of the demonstrators threw at the bank. i can tell you we were over at the plaza which seems to be the ground zero for a lot of protesters. even this morning, there are at least three, four police cars sitting there. the demonstrators there are all gone. that's the latest from here. reporting live in oakland, christie smith, "today in the bay." zblt right now we want to update you on a breaking story in contra costa county. manhunt is over on bethel island after the suspect was found dead inside of the car. brian hickey live there on

bethel island with all the latest information, brian, what's happening out there? >> contra costa sheriff's department saying it was a self-inflicted wound. not letting anyone out on gateway road. bethel island. they are letting neighbors leave as you see the jeep coming out of the scene. a mile down the road where the crime scene set up. this is how it looked earlier this morning. the search was still ongoing with paramedics arriving on the scene, s.w.a.t. teams arriving on the scene. chp helicopter overhead. after midnight, an officer was attempting to pull the suspect over. the man fled and led to a high-speed chase where eventually this chase ended and told the suspect fired rounds at the deputy. deputy was not injured. one of the rounds did hit his car. that's when they began to search for the suspect and finding him deceased in his car an hour ago. s.w.a.t. team moved in and found him slumped over the wheel. the corner has been called. an investigation is under way.

why they are keeping gateway shut down at this point. again, residents leaving. thor is is much now over. >> we can tell you overnight crash causing a big-time mess out in milbrae. take a look at this damage left behind on el camino. just north of milbrae avenue. authorities say that a driver lost control about 2:30 this morning and knocked that fire hydrant right off of the base. the car, as you see there, lot of damage, took out tree branches before hitting the building. hydrant sent a river of water rushing right down the street. and at this point no word on the driver's condition. 6:07 now. get a look of the forecast. christina loren, another nice day. >> good looking day shaping up. quite the contrast from yesterday at this time. we had a full deck of clouds overhead on the golden gate bridge. not the case this morning. looking just beautiful. lot of people out here already enjoying the gorgeous start for you on this wednesday morning. let's talk about what you can expect as we head throughout the day today. hit about 45 degrees as the low.

101 van ness. we will look again. see how things are shaping up on the east bay. past the coliseum, smooth drive. all the way down into the south bay for 880, again volume increases. track that and other hotspots throughout the east bay coming up. >> thank you, mike. 6:09 now. assault rifles, fake i.d.s and san francisco police department uniform. just a few of the items found inside of the storage locker belonging to a teenager accused of stealing a celebrity's chef car. 17-year-old max michael wade now faces a slew of charges in a suspected crime spree. officers also found shotgun shells and equipment for jamming cell phones and radios. in addition, they found a stolen yellow lambourghini. similar to this one, belonging to a bay area celebrity chef. officers searched the storage locker in richmond after linking the teen to a shooting in mill valley in april. the teen is now charged as an

protesters occupied a building. they have gone on top of the roof, the police surrounding the building there. this is all because of protesters occupying the building late last night. completely taking it over. we understand that a few arrests have already been made this morning. we have a live reporter on the scene. we bring you the latest. certainly things have calmed down. we expect a zoom in there and you can see people are handcuffed and will be taking them away. we will continue to follow this all morning long for you. 6:13 now. education taking a front seat as dozens of south basis point students and teachers board busses and travel to sacramento to save school funding. marla tellez joins us live with an update on that pending rally. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the buses and masses have arrived here at the east ridge mall parking lot. you can take a look for yourself. dozens of people eager to hop on the bus. they are heading to sacramento to have their voices heard and get to speak face-to-face with state legislators and tell them how they feel about state education and schools in the south bay.

now, the man who organizes this bus trip every year, dave is here this morning. these include teachers and students and residents in the community. when you get to sacramento this morning, what happens then? >> we get there with this large crowd, the people over 120 people. and will take over a committee room. it is not -- part of the occupy movement but we do take over an actual committee room. legislators will come in one at a time, every 15 to 20 minutes. face up with these people. where our community is up against here, the local level. people will express their views. there is a lot of adrenaline in the room when this gets going. >> again, you have been doing this for ten years. have you seen a difference in your efforts? >> we feel we have seen a difference. there are times we go up in and we raise an issue and oftentimes an assembly person will stay i wasn't going to follow up on that but now that i know it is

to customers that ask for paper bags. the public is invited to discuss the matter at meetings. it starts tonight at 6:00. jeremy affeldt now back on the disabled list after another freak injury. the left-hander sprained his right knee after reaching out to catch his 4-year-old son. affeldt says that he felt a pop when the boy jumped off the couch to give him a warm hug. that's tough. this is the second time in eight months affeldt has been on that dl. last year, if you will, affeldt's season ended early after he sliced his hand with a knife trying on separate a couple of frozen burger patties. that's not good. the earliest affeldt could be back in the bull pen, if all things go well, is about a week. matt cain on the mound for the giants. unfortunately the rest of the team suffering power outage. top of the fifth. marlins up 1-0. cain gives up two runs in the ninth. but home run gives the marlins

wind. it is the winds that are presenting that fog from settling in. san francisco, you are at 48 degrees now. full sunshine. temperatures will be able to climb quickly as a result of that. 45 degreeses in livermore now. 45 in sunnyvale. good morning to you there. and there is the wind we are telling you about. out of the southwest at 13 miles per hour in fairfield. your sustained this morning at 15 miles per hour straight out of the west in oakland. winds will be a factor for today. just as they have been over the past couple of days. the cooler air courtesy of anner area of low pressure that came through a weak disturbance. usher in cooler conditions. it will take a little while for the cool air to mix out. we are still ex-petting the 70s later today. 5:00 p.m., you can see getting cloud cover down through the south bay at that point. showers stay to the north. mostly impacting the north bay and just a little bit of action at that point in san francisco. we con that futurecast for you, 6:00 p.m. oakland getting a little bit of shower activity at that point. the whole thing falls apart.

"wall street journal," laura, this morning says it is -- this time it is absolutely sure that facebook ipo will come friday, may 18. the so-called road show where executives privately briefed early investors will come as soon as this coming monday. the billion dollar question is how much is facebook worth? you can be an expert at financing and still have no idea. it is not clear facebook knows how much it is worth. we should -- weekly financial reports say facebook's advertising is slowing. and it is having trouble bringing ads to mobile users. at the same time, it is -- many people are doing more and more facebooking on moesh aisle. but facebook's influence is undeniable. yesterday we were talking about the new push to get people to sign up to come organ donors.

the california organ donation registry says the number of people signing up jumped by 800% in one day thanks to facebook. executives at the company have been talking publicly. they need to be careful to avoid the google problem. you remember google founder gave an interview to "playboy" and published in the days leading up to google's ipo. it nearly derailed it. facebook is well within its period. the executive did give a couple of interviews yesterday. it is not in a quiet period up can't talk at all. you can't promote your own company. that's a very, very sort of careful thing you have to watch as the google executives found out six years ago. >> you actually read that article. >> great article. >> i collected it. >> thank you. >> i'm sure you did. president obama returning to washington in just a few hours from right now.

there you go. become to you. >> thank you very much. 6:25 right now. explosions, gunfire, death in afghanistan this morning. just hours after president obama made a surprise visit. tracie potts live on capitol hill this morning. the trip that coincided with the one-year anniversary of osama bin laden's death. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. during that trip and president was only down in afghanistan for about six hours, he made a speech, live televised speech, to the u.s., where he said this time of war began in afghanistan and this is where it will end. that end date 2014. while he was there, the president went to the presidential palace and to meet with president karzai of afghanistan. they signed a partnership agreement and promising support from the u.s. and after 2014 but it did not say how many of our troops will remain there. meantime, mitt romney says that if he had been president, he would have also made the same

bob redells that latest this morning's raid. bob? >> reporter: good morning. you can see behind me we still have officers with the pd and deputies still in riot gear. maintaining a perimeter around 888 street. this is the building protesters took over late yesterday afternoon. right now it has been a very slow process. the process has been going on for an hour and a half now where law enforcement has been taking out one by one the protesters in plastic hand ties. putting them into the police wagons and presumably taking them downtown to be booked. this started, as i mentioned, around 5:00 this morning. when officers arrived on the scene and rushed into the building and released 12, 20 of them that went inside. we spoke to protesters inside and they said they were caught by surprise because they didn't think they were going to be coming until 10:00 this morning. they thought they had until at least daylight to be in there before they were evicted.

that clearly was not the case. police were inside for at least a half hour. they brought out barricades dragged in by protesters. protesters on the second floor watching them from below. then around 6:00 this morning, about a half hour ago, when they started bringing the protesters out one by one. p by our sometimes talking with people who -- know people inside and who were inside. 30 to 40 people who stayed inside overnight and we spoke to one protester who was actually released. he was allowed to go. he tells us this morning's raid was very peaceful. that they surrendered to police. it was almost businesslike. he says it was well worth occupying this building. even though it lasted less than 24 hours. >> i thought it was important because it makes a current statement to the -- to the fact there are so many abandoned homes and foreclosed -- foreclosed. that could be used to

households. >> reporter: here we are at 6:30 in the morning. we are about 12 hours, maybe a little bit more than 12 hours after this began yesterday. this was what it looked like yesterday afternoon when it started. the protesters came here to this vacant building. a building owned by the archdiocese of san francisco. police did try to set up barricades to keep these people from going in. they simply overwhelmed police and then at one point someone was on top of the building and threw a brick down -- a brick down into the crowd. and actually hit another protester. that protester is okay. the man with the brick has been arrested. looks like the sheriff's office is standing down right now. we have dash looks like one wore squads, maybe about a dozen 20, officers who are leaving their post. they have been out here the past hour and a half. this is another sign that this situation here is winding down as police have overtaken the building and protesters being led away peacefully in plastic hand ties.

reporting live san francisco, bob redell, "today in the bay." we send to it christie smith, my colleague, covering what's going on over there across the bay in oakland. >> reporter: yes, good morning to you, bob. we are near lake merit by downtown oakland. people are starting to show up to work this morning. i can tell you, they stop and stare when they see the major repair job going on here at the california bank and trust. eight or nine windows broken out by protesters last night. on one side of the building. tall way down the other side, one repairman tells me that he knows the fwlas is very expensive because it is double-payne security glasses. the rock the demonstrators used to break it didn't go all the way through. and the glass stayed in the window frame. after a very peaceful mayday protest over financial inequality with thousands of people, that spun off into a smaller group that clashed with police, downtown oakland last night. police say some demonstrators threw rocks and bottles and

painted them and refused to disperse when orders were given and tear gas had to be deployed to move the crowd as people broke windows and spray painted. i just spoke with one lifelong oakland man who tells me that he is concerned about this happening again in the city. >> i feel he has the right to express an opinion about our objectives. even with the paint. i don't like paint. that's a no-no, you know. >> reporter: the police say that 25 people were arrested, including one person for felony assault on an officer. police van had its windows shattered. police car was set on fire. and another car set on fire. we are also told that a number of news vans were damaged, this like broken windows and slashed tires. i asked one gentleman out here who was working with the bank what he thought they used for this. and there are several of these that looks like pieces of asphalt just sitting around and

he says that he thinks that they pick these up and just hurl them. i asked him how much he thought it would be be to repair this. he said he didn't want to think bit. reporting live in oakland, christie smith, "today in the bay." a manhunt in contra costa county over after the suspect is found dead inside of a car. emergency vehicles patrolling bethel island for several hours overnight searching for an armed fugitive. police say that the suspect fled after oakley officers tried to pull him over for a traffic violation. he also fired at officers on bethel island hitting a police cruiser. then just a few hours ago he was found dead inside of a car from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. in the south bay, the search for a 15-year-old sierra lamar continues this morning. hundreds of volunteers searching the hills and fields around morgan hill today. it has been more than six weeks since lamar was -- since she was discovered she disappeared. the sheriff's dive team using

area. also teachers are onboard and just concerned members of the community and as we speak, the buses, if we can go back out live one more time, buss are on their way to the state capitol. once they get to sacramento, they are able to get face to face with the state legislators to voice their concerns over cuts to education. i spoke to a mother and her daughter who made the trip last year and both tell me the trip alone is educational. >> education is so critical. that's why i brought my children for the second year, too. i want them to know how important it is to go to sacramento and to stand up for our teachers and our future for our children. because of the budget cuts, it is hard for them to get the materials they need. >> i get to like -- i get to see the buildings and guy it to, like, march with the people that i know. especially my mom and it is really fun. >> reporter: this is the tenth annual bus ride all organized by dave cortesi. in the decade he has been doing

san francisco. has been there all morning covering the story. bob, what's happening now? >> reporter: good morning to you. you can see that raid is officially over. police are starting to wrap up here. 880 turk street. vacant building owned by the archdiocese of san francisco. but until early this morning, it had been occupied by protesters starting yesterday afternoon. part of the may day protest. we just got an update from the sfpd. they arrested 26 protesters. two people released. one was a person in a wheelchair. the other person was journalist who had been inside. this raid started around 5:00 this morning when officers and rye inry on the gear stormed the building and came unannounced. the protesters said they were caught by surprise. at least one we spoke to. because they thought maybe they had, lets say, around 10:00 this morning. they were asleep at the time. but they said that when they -- police came inside they said they surrendered peace zpli put their hands up. they went out without any

resistance, without a fight. that's something that sfpd tells us. starting around 6:00 this morning is when they started bringing protesters out one by one in the plastic handcuffs. taking them away in police wagons. it was a very slow process. took about 45 minutes. in the end, as i mentioned, 26 people, most of them men, some women, taken away downtown to be booked on trespassing charges. this started late yesterday afternoon. sfpd did try to stop occupy sf protesters from going inside and tried to set up barricades but were simply overwhelmed. there were a couple hundred people by some estimates at the time. one person actually got on the roof, threw a brick down into the crowd. apparently aiming at police but ended up hitting another protester. that person was arrested. that protester, we understand, refused medical attention at the time. there were other people, at least one other person, that went on top threw metal pipes on the ground, trying to get police the one person was arrested. police chief greg sur saying

those people throwing items were part of the anarchists, sf people trying to condemn those people and say they are not having anything to do with them. again, occupation here in is an is over. 26 people arrested. >> it is over there but the cleanup continues in oakland. occupy protesters vandalize businesses and clash with police during an overnight raid there. that march. christie smith live in oakland with the latest the cleanup efforts there. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. people are starting to get off the b.a.r.t. train on their way to work this morning. i can tell you they stop and stare at the major repair job going here. three windows broken on this side. couple more all the way down. about eight or nine windows broken out bank here by demonstrators last night after a group and peaceful may day protest broke off and clashed with police. breaking windows and spray painting. i spoke with one man at the california bank and trust.

in contra costa county just ended after a gunman was found dead. police searching bethel island for several hours overnight. trying to find the man who fired at police. oakland officers tried to pull the guy over for a traffic violation but he then sped away. he later fired at officers on bethel island as well. hitting a police cruiser and then just a few hours ago, that man was found dead inside of a car from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. >> new this morning, overnight crash causing a big mess in milbrae. take a look at the damage left behind on el camino just north of milbrae avenue. a driver lost control about 2:30 this morning. took out a fire hydrant and sent water cascading everywhere. the car also hit some trees in a building. no word on the driver's condition. big changes coming to walnut creek businesses that serve alcohol. city council has unanimously approved the new alcohol restricts requiring all bars to have security and adhere to

alcohol cutoff times. some have been exempt from the 2004 law that set rules for bars and restaurants. bar owners have threatened to u over the ordinance. no word yet if they will follow through. >> san jose will not be cutting retirement benefits for future city workers. city council called a deadlock on a vote to trim all pension benefits workers hired after july 1. mayor chuck reid pushing for the change saying san jose's retirement costs grew from $73 million, ballooning up to $245 million in the last ten years. police officers and firefighters would be exempt. >> cleaning up graffiti. last year the city laid off employees and outsourced graffiti cleanup to save money. the nbc bay area investigative unit exposed problem was the company doing the job. now council members want an answer. several members propose the city re-evaluate the contract with the company. and provide other options for cleaning up that graffiti.
