labor's monthly jobs report is officially out this morning. scott mcgrew is here to show us and, of course, give us insight into what they exactly mean. good morning, scott. >> well, good morning to you. the number we care the most about is 115,000. the american economy gained 115,000 jobs in the month of april. that is an enormously disappointing if expected number. now, the unemployment rate falls to 8.1%. that would appear to be good news. but there's something called the participation rate that we rarely talk about. and that is 63%. the number of people participating or wanting to participate in the economy and jobs has fallen. so people have stopped trying to find jobs, and that's one of the reasons you're seeing the unemployment rate drop. i often tell you to ignore the unemployment rate. this month, i'm especially telling you to ignore it because of the number of people who have
6:02 am
left the labor force, the participation rate. so again, is 15,000, that's not enough to compensate for the number of 18-year-olds coming into the -- into the labor force each month. so it's a net negative technically. we can get through this, we might see something better come this summer, but it's a pretty poor number. back to you. >> no kidding. thank you very much. it's 6:02. and new this morning, four people are behind bars following an overnight gang sweep in san francisco. members of the city's gang task force served a warrant at a home on dartmouth street in the city's portola district. you can see the suspects being taken from that home in handcuffs. 12 inspectors remain on the scene following those arrests. police say the activity was part of an ongoing gang investigation. okay. you've probably seen it out on the roads, a lot of us have. the shock of suddenly finding a motorcyclist sharing that lane right next to you. a survey on how drivers actually feel about what's called lane splitting is out this morning. bob redell is live.
6:03 am
he has more on the controversial practice and how common it really is out on california highways. good morning, bob. >> well, good morning to you, jon. you've probably been heading up 880 like we're doing now and you've seen motorcyclists do it. it's called lane splitting. it's a very dangerous maneuver if neither sides are paying attention. that's when the motorcyclist passes between you and the car next to you, straddling the painted line that separates the lanes. and as i said it, you're not paying attention, it can be very dangerous for both parties. did you know that it is entirely legal for motorcyclists to do this? california, the only state in the country that allows this. and if you didn't know that, you're not alone. to kick off motorcycle safety awareness month, the state's office of traffic safety has just released this survey that found that barely half of us know that lane splitting is legal. 87% almost all motorcyclists do it, and a small portion of drivers, 7%, admit trying to stop the practice by blocking motorcyclists.
6:04 am
>> i don't think they should be able to. >> why? >> why? because if i have a right to change lanes if traffic is moving, he can come out of nowhere. disappear out of nowhere. and that makes it actually my fault i also believe. >> probably wondering why would the state conduct this survey? what's the point? well, they say they're going to use the results to help come up with a plan to reduce motorcycle death and injuries. now, in spite of the number of motorcyclists splitting lanes, the number of motorcyclists dying on the roads has been going down recently. this is after more than ten years of increases. now the state because it's motorcycle awareness safety month, they are recommending that motorcyclists do pick a lane so they're more visible not sneaking up on the side of your car or in your blind spot. and they're asking drivers to increase their stopping distance to keep in mind it's a lot harder for a motorcyclist to stop than it is for a car. and they're asking both parties, both motorcyclists and drivers
