alameda is dead, killed in action in afghanistan. staff sergeant thomas fogerty died sunday in an ied attack. maurice sendak has died, the author of "where the wild things are" has passed away this morning at a connecticut hospital after suffering a stroke last friday. sendak was 83 years old. also developing news we're covering this morning, police investigating a deadly -- a grisly discovery in the east bay, a mother and daughter shot to death inside their own home. "today in the bay's" bob redell with what we know so far. bob? >> reporter: good morning to you, laura. whether this was a murder/suicide or a double murder, pleasanton police are not ruling anything out. they do tell us that the husband and father is not a suspect. it was he who discovered his wife and teenage daughter inside their home on stacy court when he came home from work around 6:00 last night. both had been shot.

his wife was already dead, his daughter still alive. he called 911, she made it to eden medical center in castro valley where she ended up passing away. the mom was amy freeman burton, 37 years old, the daughter ansley freeman, a student at hart middle school. she along with her mother and father had just moved to this neighborhood a few months ago from missouri. one neighbor describes them as having been a sweet family. here in pleasanton, bob redell, "today in the bay." an east bay toddler hospitalized this morning after being mauled by what was supposed to be a four-legged friend. live at children's hospital in oakland right now where that 2-year-old girl is recovering. good morning, christie. >> yeah, good morning to you. this is an awful story. the little girl was bitten in the face, the head, and the leg. she was last listed in stable condition after she was flown here to children's hospital in oakland to be treated for severe

bite wounds from the family pit bull. the 2-year-old girl was attacked yesterday evening at a family home in concord. animal control immediately seized the dog and concord police tell us this morning that it's actually animal control that's leading the investigation into whether or not the dog may have had a violent history. if so, they say the owner could face criminal charges, but right now, they say it doesn't look that way. one neighbor told us, the dog didn't appear to be a problem. >> it's not a problem. it was not unattended at any time that i'm aware of. and i'm sure the rest of the neighborhood would say the same. >> now, another neighbor told us a different story but didn't want to go on camera. that neighbor said that the dog was always on a leash but didn't appear particularly friendly. reporting live in oakland, christie smith, "today in the bay." 6:03. livermore police want women to be on the lookout for a sexual assault suspect along the bike path. they say a young man who calls himself gabe approached a woman

on monday on the aroyo bike path. he pulled her close and groped her. the woman yelled and ran away. the suspect is still on the loose. police say there have been at least seven sexual assaults along bike or jogging paths in livermore since 2006. and we have new information this morning on the victim of a deadly officer-involved shooting in oakland. the man killed during a police chase early sunday identified as high school senior alan bluford. police say the 18-year-old and two others ran from officers, and bluford then pointed a gun at them. he was ultimately fatally shot. one officer accidentally shot himself in the foot. bluford was on probation for burgla burglary. a key ruling on whether ross mirkarimi will be removed from office permanently. a judge is expected to decide whether they can use a video of mirkarimi's wife showing a

bruise on her arm. the bruise led to a domestic violence charge and his guilty plea to false imprisonment charges. the mayor has accused mirkarimi of official misconduct and is making the case to force him out. san mateo county trying to lock up funding for a brand new jail. the new county jail will break ground this year on chemical way in redwood city regardless of state funding. this morning at 9:00, hearing a proposal calling on the county to grant an initial 20 million in construction funding for the $150 million facility. this should take about 35 months from the ground breaking for the jail to actually be up and running. 6:05 this morning, a call for action to stop the violence near an oakland school. oakland city councilman, student, parents, and community leaders will hold a news conference at 8:45 this morning at fremont high school. they're concerned about rising crime in the area. so far, this year alone oakland

has had at least 45 homicides. it is 6:05 right now. san francisco teachers working overtime today out on the picket line. staging a protest at 5:00 outside of san francisco's unified school district offices on franklin street. the union very unhappy over layoff and districts' demand to cut $30 million from the salaries and benefits over the next two years. a strike authorization vote will be held later on this week. this morning, csu trustees are backing off the policy giving 10% raises to campus presidents. but, there's a catch. they're going to ask campus nonprofit groups to pick up the tab instead. under the new rules, new presidents could still get higher pay than their predecessors. but the amount of the raise would be paid for by so-called auxiliary groups. csu says the raises would not take away any of the money earmarked for campuses. according to christina loren, looks like a good week to go out and get an extra dose of

vitamin d. >> all you can take. more of the same today. a little bit of a difference right at the coast. a little bit of cloud cover, not going to last very long. and really what is left of it is situated over the golden gate bridge and right at the coast. we have ragged patches of fog on our coastal mountains probably for another hour or two, high pressure, though, is moving in quickly, building. so for us, that offshore flow is going to ramp back up today. that means we'll see the breezes pick up and it'll push back out to sea. so it all works out like this for today. the weather headlines tell the story. coastal fog to start, cool out there, as well, you want to dress for the two parts of the day, especially inland, temperatures climbing to about 80 degrees. very warm day. that breeze will build just as it did yesterday. and then tomorrow, a touch cooler, we're going to warm you back up. even warmer weather on the way. as we head into this weekend. a lot to talk about. here's your breakdown, temperatures hour by hour. by the bay, 60 degrees at noon.

gorgeous conditions, temperatures are going to be perfect. hot inland, hydrate. 6:07, first, let's check your drive with mike. the south bay overall still holding up nicely, but slowing for 101 and 87 right on schedule there. construction, 17 at campbell, not a big deal, but the earlier closure of the northbound side of 17 has cleared. all lanes have reopened, better news, looks like beach weather again today. going to get crowded over the summit. live look outside shows you what things are like through the coliseum. nice, easy drive, but the volume picking up. no incidents downtown, but the slowing will start as this really starts to fill lanes in, north from high street downtown. and a little haze. back to you. >> okay, mike. keeping you out on the roads. passengers could be allowed to board through any door on those buses. the san francisco board of supervisors committee approving that legislation monday. the full board will get a chance to approve this next week. the deal is, the passengers will

have to tag their clipper cards or have proof of payment to board. 6:08. san jose leaders are turning tragedy into hope. the city is naming a new pedestrian bridge after a toddler who died on the stretch of train tracks. alexander was struck by an amtrak train in south san jose back in 2005. the 2-year-old was trying to follow his babysitter who was illegally crossing the tracks. zander's crossing is being constructed near the scene of that accident. it will open this summer. it is wildfire awareness week. cal fire wants homeowners to be aware of this. taking steps to prepare their families and their homes for potential wildfires. among the recommendations, clearing brush surrounding your home. firefighters say california could have a particular busy fire season after very little winter rain. and the wildfire awareness week runs until may 12th. >> dry and hot out there already. >> good point. 6:09 right now. coming up on "today in the bay,"

you. live look outside, haze over san francisco this morning. going to be a nice day, warm temperatures continue. 6:12 right now. a car spotted at the time of sierra lamar's disappearance could be the break they were needing. live in the south bay with an update on that lead the police are following. good morning, marla. >> good morning, sheriff investigators are debating whether or not to release key surveillance video that shows that now infamous red jetta. they are calling this the biggest development in the case so far. cameras capturing images of a mid 1990s red four-door jetta with a distinct black hood similar to what you're seeing here. detectives say they do not have a license plate number but this type of car was spotted near sierra lamar's morgan hill home the morning she disappeared. that was march 16th. the car was also seen in areas where evidence has been

6:14, a volualuium and alco overdose is to blame for kinkade's death. he was found dead near los gatos last month. the coroner's report shows kinkade might have also taken the drug ghb. his family says he battled alcoholism for years and suffered a recent relapse. okay. a unique story with quite a few twists. two women married to the very same soldier meet for the very first time at his funeral in southern california. 29-year-old moses gonzalez from huntington park died in a car crash in afghanistan just last month. a bakersfield woman, mary gonzalez, back in 2010 unaware he was already married to a los angeles woman. the two sat on the very same row at gonzalez' funeral monday. gonzalez' father says he does not want his son to be remembered for multiple families. >> he was a very good boy and he died giving his life for the country that he loved. >> gonzalez' first wife for the record will receive his

benefits. his second wife says she's looking into her options. the giants will try to put things back together in l.a. tonight to face the dodgers at 7:10. but the series not off to a good start for the giants. the dodgers held to three runs over the first six innings, but the bullpen took over and so did the dodgers. scoring six runs in the seventh and eighth inning, giants lost it 9-1. >> rough day all the way around for the giants. they lose out on the field and then they find out they're actually going to be losing one of their pitchers. they got beat up by the giants 9-1, their pitcher mota tested positive for the banned substance. now mota's agent says the pitcher took children's cough syrup which contained trace amounts of the substance. mota will appeal the suspension, but can't suit up until the appeal is heard. the question is, what is

bit cool early. just a touch cooler at the coast for today. inland temperatures are running just about as warm as that marine layer will not penetrate any further than san francisco. it is going to last probably for the next couple of hours and then finito. 49 in napa. tomorrow morning, more low cloud cover and we'll be a little bit cooler. all works out like this. high pressure still in control. still have offshore flow. but this morning, a little bit more of an onshore flow as a system of low pressure passed to our north. so hence, the low clouds right at the coast. not going to last lock, but enough to cool you down in places like san francisco, pacifica. full-on sunshine, though, coming in early here in san jose. tomorrow, what we can expect. a little bit more low cloud cover, 4 to 8 degrees cooler as a result that cooling does not last long. we're going to warm you right back up just in time for the weekend. so if you wanted to hit the beach today, maybe you have the day off. you're going to beat those weekend beach crowds. 73 degrees at noon in santa cruz, phenomenal weather at 4:00

this just in, the department of defense tells us a local soldier has been killed in action in afghanistan. staff sergeant thomas fogerty of alameda died after enemy forces attacked his army unit with an explosive device on may 6th, he was just 30 years old. and laura, we have an update on developing news. a mother and daughter shot to death in their very own home. live in pleasanton where police are trying to piece the clues together. >> reporter: good morning, jon. police tell us in pleasanton, it was the father who came home from work around 6:00 last night, entered his home here on stacy court. inside found his wife already dead from a gun shot wound and his 13-year-old daughter also shot but still alive. he called 911, an ambulance rushed her to eden medical center where she later died. the mother we are told was amy freeman burton, 37 years old, the daughter ansley freeman 13 years old. the pleasanton weekly reporting

she was a student at heartland middle school. they did interview the father at headquarters saying he helped them out answering questions. they say he is not a suspect. police will not say whether this was a murder/suicide. they're not ruling out anything. we spoke with a neighbor who says they were a sweet family who had just moved to the neighborhood a few months ago from missouri. reporting live here in pleasanton, "today in the bay." mauled by a vision dog this morning. this morning, an east bay toddler in the hospital after a savage attack from the family pit bull. live in oakland with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. yeah, this is an awful attack, but the latest information we have is that the little girl is in stable condition after she was flown here to oakland children's hospital after the family dog attacked her and bit her several times on the face, the head, and the leg according to a firefighter on scene.

this happened yesterday evening. the family home on the 4,300 block of rose lane in concord. a 2 1/2-year-old girl. family members didn't want to talk with nbc bay area obviously distraught about what was going on about this pit bull attack. and investigators say it's unclear what led to the mauling. >> right now we're concerned with first and foremost taking care of the child, receiving emergency care. there's always the potential we'll be investigating whether or not they had any knowledge of the dog having a violent history. >> reporter: now, at this point they say, it doesn't appear that way. animal control immediately seized the dog. and one neighbor who spoke with us said he was kind of surprised by all of this because the pit bull was not left unattended and didn't appear to act aggressively. but another neighbor who didn't want to go on camera who said he always saw the dog on the leash but did not appear friendly.

christie smith, "today in the bay." we have new information this morning on the victim of a deadly officer-involved shooting in oakland. the man killed during a police chase early sunday identified as high school senior alan bluford, police say the 18-year-old and two other men ran from officers and he pointed a gun at them. he was fatally shot. an officer was wounded when he accidentally shot himself in the foot. bluford was on probation for burglary. another oakland suspect disappears from custody near 7th and jefferson streets. the man was handcuffed in the back of a patrol car last night when he managed to slip out of them. the handcuffs and then took off. he did leave the cuffs behind for good measure, but right now, he is listed as long gone. 6:34 this morning, we're getting a look at two of the men suspected of robbing a taxi driver and stuffing him in the trunk of his own cab. police say these two men and an accomplice held the driver at gunpoint in antioch nearly two weeks ago.

they then forced the driver into the trunk before driving that car to oakland. the driver was released unharmed about an hour later. he was able to flag down a passing car and call police. officers found the cab the next morning on 83rd avenue. all three suspects are still on the loose. well, time is running out for a protest to unoccupy land. occupy squatters have been camping on the 10-acre site for two weeks now. they say they're there trying to protect it from development. berkeley says it needs the land to begin the june research projects and is willing to negotiate with those protesters. but so far, the occupiers ignoring the deadlines and ultimatums and they are refusing to leave. 6:35, some college students will be closely watching congress this morning. the senate is expected to vote on the democratic plan that would keep interest rates on student loans from doubling july 1st. the democratic plan pays the $6 billion costs with higher

payroll taxes from high wage earners. house republicans passed a one-year extension last week paying for it by cutting from a preventative health care fund. former presidential candidate rick santorum throwing his support behind mitt romney this morning. late monday night, santorum sent out an e-mail to supporters asking them to rally around romney. although it didn't get mentioned until about the 13th paragraph. santorum also promising more big news on the way in that e-mail. he'll be on the "tonight show" with jay leno tonight. 6:36 right now. time to check the forecast with meteorologist christina loren. another hot one. >> it is going to be a hot one. doesn't this picture just speak hot at 6:36 this morning? that doesn't look fun. we'll talk to mike about that in a minute. but i wanted to show you, the sun is now up and we have a beautiful day shaping up by the water. it's going to be hot inland. if you work outside, bring that water bottle with you, stay hydrated and try to park in the shade if you can help it.

temperatures this morning running mild, we're at 53 in sunnyvale, 55 in san jose. and now that is sun is up, we are going to warm up quickly. 8:00 a.m., in the 60s, 70s and 80s inland and rounding out the day with 90s on the temperature map yet again. not even peak warmth. something we've had had to suffer with very high pollen levels. it's been very, very dry year overall. and as you know, we have a lot of growth out there. a lot of blossoming on the local hills. winds making for a very, very bad scenario when it comes to all that growth. so lots of pollen out there and even if you don't suffer from allergies today, yo uh might find yourself sniffling, sneezing. if that is the case, try to get indoors as quickly as possible. we're going to see another high pollen count tomorrow and then trend a little bit lower as we get into your weekend. that's the good news. we'll talk more about that weekend forecast coming up. here's what you need to know for today. hour-by-hour break down, 86 at

welcome back, everyone. 6:41 right now. this morning, plans to open a walmart grocery store in pleasanton are delayed. walmart wants to move in to the former supermarket in the meadow hill shopping center on santa rita road. it's been vacant for a couple of years, but a city council member asked to delay that decision after labor groups questioned the alleged involvement in bribery to expand in mexico. the council will revisit the issue next tuesday. there could soon be new protections for pregnant workers. bay area legislators introducing a bill today to close legal loopholes and ensure expectant mothers are treated fairly on the job. more than 30 years of federal and state laws prohibited discrimination on pregnant women. but reports of violations have been on the rise since 2005.

"today in the bay's" live in morgan hill with a new development police need the public to keep an eye out for. marla? >> reporter: laura, good morning. santa clara county sheriff investigators are calling this new development significant. they are linking a jetta to the disappearance of sierra lamar. they say surveillance cameras captured images of a mid-1990s red jetta with four doors and a

black hood near sierra's home the morning she went missing. that was back in mid-march. the car was also spotted in areas where evidence has been found. investigators say from the tape they cannot tell if sierra was actually in the car that day. but they have reason to believe this car is suspicious. sierra's mother marlene hopes this new information inspires a new momentum. >> it is a lead that everybody can focus on. you know, before we have to be really careful as far as not jeopardizing the investigation. but the word's out now. >> now we've also learned officials are looking into whether sierra's case is connected to another one in walnut creek. a 13-year-old girl says she was approached by someone in a similar red car two days before sierra disappeared. now, the next volunteer search for sierra is tomorrow.

have two new accidents reported. one at guadalupe parkway. going to add to the slowing or distraction. that's the south bay dramatically changing over the last 15 minutes. coming down off the carquinez bridge, typical slowing spots, but tuesday, 25-minute drive or thereabouts as you're coming off the bridge down toward the bay bridge toll plaza with the metering lights on. a disabled vehicle blocking one lane that will be an issue coming off the freeway and heading up towards highway 24. we'll get you a live look outside and see how things are shaping up across the bay. northbound 880, the volume starting to kick in for oakland, as well, but no slowing for the nimitz. a bay area neighborhood in shock after mother and daughter are found dead in their own home. police aren't ruling out anything. they do tell us that the husband and father is not a suspect. he discovered his wife and teenage daughter inside their home here on stacy court when he came home from work around 6:00 last night. both had been shot. his wife was already dead, his daughter still alive. he is the one who did call 911. his daughter did make it to eden medical center in castro valley where she ended up passing away. the mom, police tell us was amy freeman burton, 37 years old, the daughter, ansley freeman, 13 years old, a student at hart middle school. she along with her mother and father moved to the neighborhood a few months ago from missouri. one neighbor describes them as having been a sweet family. live in pleasanton, "today in the bay." an east bay toddler recovering after being brutally attacked by the family pit bull. doctors are treating bites to

her face and legs. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. yeah, this was awful according to the emergency crews on scene. this little girl was bitten in the face, the head, and the right leg several times just 2 years old. she was flown to children's hospital here in oakland where as far as we know she is still here this morning listed in stable condition. a family pit bull attacked the girl late yesterday afternoon at the home on the 4,300 block in rose lane and concord. what animal services are trying to do is if the dog was violent in the past. and if so, the owner could face charges, but so far it doesn't look like it. one neighbor described the dog this way. >> the dog was not a problem. it was not out unattended at any time i was aware of. and i'm sure the rest of the neighborhood would say the same. >> well, now another neighbor told us something quite different. and that is the dog was always on a leash but didn't seem very friendly. reporting live in oakland,

christie smith, "today in the bay." a friendly gesture turns into a crime in livermore. police say a man who called himself gabe approached a woman on the bike path monday. they say as he reached out to shake hands, he grabbed that woman and groped her. the woman yelled and ran away. the suspect is still on the loose. police say there have been at least seven sexual assaults along biker jogging paths in the city since 2006. a key ruling in a hearing on whether suspended sheriff ross mirkarimi will be removed from office permanently. a court judge expects to decide whether mayor ed lee can use a video of mirkarimi's wife showing a bruise on her arm. that led to domestic violence charges against mirkarimi and his guilty plea to false imprisonment charges. the mayor accusing mirkarimi of official misconduct and is asking to use that video to make a case to force him out. 6:53 this morning. a call for action to stop the violence near an oakland school.

oakland city councilman along with students, teach es, and parents will hold a news conference at 8:45 this morning at fremont high school concerned about rising crime in the area. so far this year, oakland has had at least 45 homicides. san francisco teachers have a different agenda today. they will be picketing outside san francisco unified school district offices on franklin street. the union unhappy over layoff and district's demands to cut $30 million from their salaries and benefits taking place over the next two years. a strike authorization vote will be held later on this week. this morning, tcu trustees are backing off a policy giving 10% raises to campus presidents. there's a catch. they will ask campus nonprofit groups to pick up the tab, as well. the board is expected to change its policy during a meeting today. under the new rules, new presidents could still get higher pay than their predecessors. but the amount of the raise would be paid for by so-called auxiliary groups.

csu says the raises would not take away money earmarked for campuses. time is running out for protesters to unoccupy land owned by u.c. berkeley. they've been on that camping site of the 10 acres in albany for two weeks. they say they're trying to protect it from development. berkeley says it needs that land to begin its june research projects and is willing to negotiate with those protesters. but so far, the occupiers have ignored deadlines and ultimatums and they are just refusing to leave. it is 6:55 right now. this is pretty cool. consider the oscars for the restaurant industry and now a local hot spot wins the most coveted award. the best restaurant in the nation. the winner is, boulevard. the san francisco classic wins the prestigious james beard award. the big announcement was made in new york city. this is boulevard's eighth straight year as a nominee, but first time as a big winner. last bay area restaurant to win was the french laundry back in 2006. she is an icon and a 26-foot
