"today in the bay." good morning. it is 6:00 right now. i'm jon kelley. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. thanks so much for joining us. we continue to follow breaking news out of menlo park this morning. fire fighters are at the scene of a hazmat situation. our chopper is live over the scene this morning. it all happened on edison way in menlo park. not too far from 101. no injuries to report. but the call came in at about 2:21 this morning. the information has been sketchy

at best. authorities pulled over that car and smelled some kind of hazardous materials. some kind of chemical type smell. and there was confusion of whether it was actually coming from the car or coming from the nearby building. bob redell has been live on the scene gathering information for us. can you clear anything else up for us, bob? >> reporter: yes. law enforcement told us that the danger has passed. we have seen the hazmat firefighters crews packing up their yellow bunny suits. they are clearly looks like they are standing down. but you can still see the red tape is up. we are not -- it is not clear whetherter there is still a hot zone and need to do something else. but as far as anyone that lives around here, danger passed. there was no danger. they said that the hot zone was contained to this parking lot. and a business here at the edison technology park. we spoke with one of the employees. actually a couple of the employees who worked there. they have been telling us all morning long that this was a

misunderstanding. it started around 3:30 this morning. deputy on patrol, san mateo county, some of the people -- a pickup truck, they thought it was suspicious. they went to talk to the people. that process they smelled something suspicious. chemical smell. it is not clear what it was. and in the process of that, they realized inside this business, there was a lab tore write. so they started thinking would are related and you have this situation we have out here. have you hazmat, fire department out here. again, the firefighters are already suited up with the oxygen masks. they went into this to investigate this chemical spill. they did come back and did pack up their yellow bunny suits giving us an indication that perhaps they are getting the wrap-up. i told you, deputy with the san mateo sheriff's department told us earlier the danger passed. reporting live here in menlo park, bob redell, "today in the bay." ÷ remains is it a break in the case or just another dead end. investigators say that dis appearance of sierra lamar say they found a red jetta that may

san jose police now investigating the death of a homeless man near a busy freeway onramp as a homicide. the 48-year-old man's body was found on a paved walkway near highway 87 monday afternoon. the man's death did not appear to be suspicious at first but co investigators later determined he had been killed. officers trying to figure out a motive at this point. police -- we all know people often camp out on the median, holding signs and asking for money. 6:36. san francisco mayor ed lee will have to wait to find out if he can use video evidence in his effort to remove suspended sh e sheriff. he agreed to give the lawyer more time to make their case. the video shows bruises on the arm of mirkarimi's wife.

update to developing news. firefighters rushed to the scene of a hazmat situation this morning but appears to be wrapping up. bob redell live at the scene in menlo park with the latest. bob? >> reporter: good morning. we now know what was going on. somebody was heating up gold in a beaker of chromatic acid. this is a process that's legally supposed to take place inside after lab with proper vent hill sxags equipment. but for some reason, was happening outside this morning in the open air and in the back of a pickup truck. being done by employees of a company called immune path. according to law enforcement. this is a bio met research firm. a deputy stumbled upon this 3:30 this morning while investigating a suspicious car in the parking lot here at the edison technology park. the car turned out to be nothing but in the process, this deputy caught a whiff of the chromatic acid and evacuated the men using it and called in hazmat. for a few hours they shut down the parking lot. while they investigated. will was never any threat to the

autopsies will be performed this morning on a mother and daughter found dead in their pleasanton home. 37-year-old amy freeman burton and her 13-year-old daughter were found shot to death monday night. police say that the two handguns were found in the house and there was no sign of forced entry. but they are still waiting for for ensuccess tests to determine if it was a murder-suicide. child hospitalized after being hit and dragged by a pickup truck. christie smith is live in concord where police are still searching for the drivers. >> reporter: yes, good morning to you. they are looking for that pickup truck and think it has some damage to the front. i will tell you more about that in a minimum. they say that they are looking for that after the driver came around the curve here on 6th street. hit the little girl and dragged her several feet. then drove away. this is around 6:30 last night. 4-year-old, they say, was playing with her sister outside of their apartment. ? how the little girl ended up in the street and the driver, they say, ran her right over.

as neighbors heard her screaming and yelling and couldn't believe believe the driver didn't stay on scene. she was flown to children's in oakland with a serious foot injury. the good news is she is expected to be okay. police are asking for the public's help in finding a newer light blue pickup truck. they say that it is raised or lifted up with oversized tires. they say it does not have a camper shell on it. again, probably has damage near the headlight area. they say that the driver kept going down the street and took off west on clayton road. reporting live in concord, christie smith, "today in the bay." father after 2-year-old boy attack bid the family pit bull is in jail this morning. jerrod perkins facing charges of child endangerment and his wife could also face charges. that attack happened at their home in castro valley about 3:00 on tuesday morning. police say that the house was unsafe. >> deputies responded to the address on gary drive. they went into the house and the

house was in very much disarray and has been neglected for a long time. and subsequently because of that, the father was arrested for child endangerment. >> during that vicious attack the boy suffering severe bites to the face. animal control officials will decide the fate of the dog and this marks the second pit bulldog attack in just two days in the east bay. and a 2-year-old girl also recovering after an attack at her concord home. that dog has since been euthanized. so far no charges filed in that case. one person is in custody this morning in connection with a four-alarm fire at a tire warehouse in the east bay. the flames spread quickly. a classic car shop next door. it took firefighters three hours just to put that out. >> it was smoke, black, everywhere. automatically are thinking the cars, customers' cars, pulled everything out.
