now, i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm jon kelley. officers still at the scene of a deadly police shooting in san francisco. and residents of an apartment building where that victim was barricaded are now being let back in. "today in the bay's" christie smith with more on what led to the gunfire. christie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, jon. well, homicide investigators are gone. there are a couple of san francisco police officers still onscene. as you mentioned, residents who had to evacuate last night are being allowed back in this morning. i saw one of them walk back in after what must have been a tense and scary night here in san francisco on poe street. gunfire erupted in the apartment building here that ended up with a man dead, a man who may be tied to a killing in the north bay. police say this started around 8:45 last night when police tried to talk with a man, question him in an apartment here about a homicide in their own city. they say that man's girlfriend answered the door and he started shooting.
6:32 am
they backed out and called for help. the building was immediately evacuated. and the streets around here shut down for safety. san francisco police and s.w.a.t. teams came to help out. but police say this guy kept right on shooting. >> over the course of the next hour, the suspect fired multiple shots through walls and floors, building had other people in it at some point in time. in the ballpark at 10:00, the suspect set fires within the apartment. >> that man was shot and killed by san francisco police. police came to question him about the killing of a 66-year-old woman found dead in her home on tuesday. there are reports that she had been beaten and lived alone. now, on wednesday, her toyota highlander was also reported missing. last night and early this morning, san francisco police spent a little bit of time going to some surrounding apartments to make sure no one else was hit. fortunately, no one else was, but there are a lot of details
6:33 am
that need to be filled in. so san francisco police are going to be holding a press conference at 11:00 a.m. at the hall of justice. christie smith, "today in the bay." developing news in the south bay where the remains of a massive townhouse complex fire are still moldering and 100 people still evacuated in santa clara. "today in the bay's" bob redell is live at the scene where homes were reduced to rubble, we understand, bob. >> reporter: yeah, good morning to you, laura. two buildings of town homes you can see behind me. it's just the shell of homes, these buildings were not occupied. now the sun is up. we expect a fire investigator to come back out here to get a good look in the daylight to figure out what caused this fire. on the surface, nothing suspicious, but that could change if he or she finds something to indicate otherwise. you can see the two buildings on the backside, the ones that are still standing, those are two of the buildings evacuated. as many as 100 people not allowed to come back here tonight and today. what's remarkable is the buildings are still standing.
6:34 am
there is damage called by radiant heat, but the fact they are still standing is a testament to the job that the firefighters did last night because this is what they were contending with. you can see in the cell phone, a video just how large this fire was and the flames were shooting so high, we understand that they could be seen a mile away. you had basically two structures of just raw timber, open air, no sprinklers installed. just burning as they would. the first priority of the department was to keep the occupied buildings from burning down. santa clara fire calling in the county. they fought this fire for about an hour, were able to get it out, but the buildings under construction, unfortunately, were not able to be saved. >> man, crazy because they wasted tons of money on it and now it's gone in the blink of an eye. >> reporter: and the fire department tells us that there
6:35 am
were golf ball-sized embers blowing from this fire scene last night. fortunately it wasn't that windy, but they learned lessons from a santana row fire if you remember several years ago. there were apartments downwind that caught fire. this time around, learning those lessons, san jose police had the helicopter up, orbiting downwind from last night's fire just to keep an eye out to make sure nothing caught fire and, of course, nothing did. no one was hurt, everyone did get out okay here last night. reporting live here in santa clara. bob redell, "today in the bay." 6:35, the teenager at the center of an alleged crime spree including the theft of a lamborghini is due in court. max wade is accused of stealing a lamborghini belonging to guy fieri. police found the car while searching for evidence. he was also caught back in february throwing parties at a vacant tiburon mansion. the san rafael teen is charged as an adult with a long list of
