today for the first time since admitting the bank lost millions of dollars due to risky bets made on his watch, a practice he reportedly encouraged. nbc's tracie potts joins us from washington with those details. good morning. >> good morning. the big question today, can he hold on to his job? some analysts think yes because even though this has been quite a challenge for the company, he's been considered a near genius before now on wall street and investors, some of them analysts say, won't want to go on without him. >> reporter: today, jpmorgan chase ceo jamen dimon faces shareholders for the first time since admitting risky hedging led to a $2 billion loss. >> we're still going to earn a lot of money this quarter. it isn't like this company is jeopardized. >> reporter: his job could be. on today's agenda, whether to split the company's chair and ceo. dimon holds both positions. elizabeth warren, a massachusetts senate candidate, who designed the consumer

financial protection bureau, said dimon should give up his board seat at new york's federal reserve. >> this is about accountability. at some point you have to be accountable and you don't get to be in a position of public trust when you're engaging in practices you yourself describe as sloppy and stupid. >> reporter: the bank has lost over 12% of its value in just five days, but analysts say it will survive. >> one-one thousandth of the bank is $2 billion, it doesn't mean a thing. they're going to earn something like 15 to $20 billion this year. >> reporter: on "the view" president obama emphasized this time taxpayers were not left holding the bag. >> you could have a bank that isn't as strong, isn't as profitable, making those same bets, and we might have had to step in and that's exactly why wall street reform is so important. >> reporter: now the senate banking committee here has been looking into wall street reform. in fact, they were doing so already, lynn. now they've added jpmorgan chase

to their agenda. >> tracie potts for us in washington, thank you. people are talking about the issue of same-sex marriage. particularly since president obama's announcement he now supports it. a "new york times"/cbs news poll found 67% of those surveyed thought the president made that decision mostly for political reasons. on 24% said it was mostly because he thinks it is right. the poll also announced 38% believed gay couples should be allowed to marry, 24% supported same-sex civil unions, 33% say there should be no legal recognition. same-sex marriage is sure to remain a critical issue in the 2012 race for the white house. nbc's brian mooar has that story. >> reporter: at a campaign fundraiser with gays and lesbians in new york, president obama described but didn't dwell on his support for same-sex marriage rights. >> i want everybody treated fairly in this country. that doesn't weaken families, that strengthens families.

>> reporter: the issue has everyone else talking for a second straight week. it's a new battlefront in the 2012 presidential race. "newsweek" magazine has declared president obama the first gay president. over the weekend presumptive republican nominee mitt romney delighted christian fundamentalists at liberty university by defining marriage as -- >> the relationship between one man and one woman. >> reporter: romney seemed less than eager to re-engage on the issue with the christian broadcasting network. >> how important it is to people a few months from now time will tell, but my positions are i think out there for people to see and hopefully i'll be able to attract the kind of support i need. >> reporter: the obama campaign is kicking up the primary season attacks on romney and his time with bain capital. >> sucked the life out of us. >> reporter: team romney is firing back with a ad saying he and bain were job creators, not job killers. >> when i started we had close

to 1400 employees. now we're over 6,000. >> reporter: a primary season squirmish, now prime time in the fight for the white house. broon moore, nbc news, washington and now here's a look at some other stories making news early today in america. in florida police arrested 31 men who thought they were going to meet children for sexual encounters. instead, they were undercover officers. waiting for the alleged on-line sexual predators. one of the suspects brought his own child to the home. in illinois a school bus full of children slammed into the back of a big rig. the bus driver and a student were seriously hurt. ten other kids suffered minor injuries in the crash along interstate 55. the fifth and sixth graders were heading back from a field trip to the state capitol. a wallaby is giving medical treatment usually reserved for humans. it's believed the wallaby may have injured its neck after

it's not going to become a hurricane but an interesting tidbit here, mexico and the baja. this is going to head harmlessly it looks like to the west/northwest over the cooler water and will kill this storm system off in the days ahead. kind of just lets us know the tropical season is here and it has now arrived in the pacific basin and june 1st is when it begins in the atlantic basin. as far as what happened in the west yesterday another hot day in the desert, sunshine and warmth, 88 in portland yesterday. 80 in seattle. looks like we're holding on to nice weather, though, but clouds will increase during the day in the northwest, that will keep your temperatures down a little bit compared to yesterday. but still, pretty much everywhere dry and very, very nice and warm. that's a look at your nationato.

legendary baseball pitcher roger clemens the star witness, brian mcnamee testified he injected clemens with steroids about eight times. -- eight to ten times in 1998. he contradicts clemens' claims before congress that he never took performance enhancing drugs. a security supervisor at new jersey's newark airport for about 20 years has been arrested on charges evidence ti theft. the illegal immigrant from nigeria allegedly used the name of a murder victim and passed years of airport background security checks. and a russian rocket lifted off today headed for low-earth orbit. an american astronaut and two cosmonauts are abody the soyuz spacecraft which are scheduled to dock with the international space station on thursday. and now here's an early look at how wall street will kick off the day. the dow opens at 12,695 after dropping 125 points yesterday. the s&p fell 15. nasdaq tumbled 31. taking a look at overseas trading this morning, in tokyo the nikkei lost 73

points but in hong kong, the hang seng added 159. an agreement between opposing political parties in greece is looking increasingly unlikely. more talks are scheduled for today the country's leftist leader vows to oppose any kind of bailout. that has global investors worried that greece could back out in its debt payment and drop the eurozone currency potentially driving up lending rates elsewhere in the country. europe's debt drama and jpmorgan chase $2 billion blunder weighed down bank stocks helping push the s&p to its lowest close since february. euro zone fears continue to spill over on to oil prices which fell to near $94 a barrel overseas this morning. after the closing bell, groupon shot up after posting its first quarterly profit. the stock already closed nearly 20% higher in regular trade. elsewhere, coty withdrew its nearly $11 billion offer to buy

avon, saying the deadline had passed. best buy rose on news the company's founder is stepping down as chairman after an investigation revealed he knew the company's ceo was having a relationship with a female employee. yahoo! ticked 3% higher on the resignation of its ceo amid a resume padding scandal. chesapeake energy added 4% on reports he bought a stake in the natural gas company. ahead of facebook's i po the company will raise it price range from 28 to $35 a share to $34 to $38. and if you're skeptical about the social network's staying power, you're apparently not alone. a an associated press/cnbc poll shows half of americans think facebook is just a passing fad. coming up the thunder drain the lakers, the nats land the padres and the heat lose one of their big three. plus the rangers goalie stone
