phenomenon. spawning an oscar-winning movie, countless lawsuits, and a continuing debate over privacy in the digital age. and now the company founded by a 20-something in a hoodie is going public. good morning to you. and thanks so much for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> the stage is all set for the biggest ipo to date. and these are new pictures of facebook employees staying up way past closing time overnight to brainstorm ideas, of course, i'm sure a few about how to spend all that new money. they're at the menlo park campus. this morning, we have a team locked in place covering facebook from just every angle. scott budman live at facebook headquarters with a look at the build-up leading to that opening bell. marla tellez live outside facebook. she will be showing us how the public offering is affecting the local economy. but we start off things, we lead our coverage with business and tech reporter scott mcgrew right here breaking it all down. good morning. >> good morning to you.
5:01 am
and happy facebook day. you've heard it debated in coffee shops and the treadmill at the gym, should i buy shares of facebook? well, this morning we expect at about 7:00 our time, shortly after the nasdaq opens, you will be able to make that decision for real. so many things to balance in your mind as a regular investor. yes, facebook is powerful enough to attract presidents. yes, hundreds of millions of people have joined, but a lousy stock market these past few months and concern over facebook's advertising income mean this is going to be a tough call for a mom and pop investor. this will be the bay area's second largest ipo ever second behind visa. $38 a share, enough to earn the company more than $16 billion. but let's bring in my colleague scott budman. he's at facebook campus. we could reminisce about social networks. friendster, myspace, this one feels different, though, a new generation and a company that's actually making money. >> you're absolutely right,
5:02 am
scott. of all the ones you mentioned, this is the one that is making money and thanks to that $16 billion cash pile that it's pulling in will definitely have a future. this is a company that's been growing and hiring and building for a long time, and now it has a significant cash reserve to do so. and as you said, the big question today, should the rest of us buy facebook? 900 million users, a lot of people are on it every day, every hour. but what about owning a piece of the company? it is a big risk and it's something we'll find out just how big of a risk a little later when the company actually starts to trade on the nasdaq. speaking of the nasdaq, of course, the nasdaq known for being out in new york, but this facebook ipo is so important it pulled the exchange at least virtually all the way across the country. you mentioned a little earlier the photographs of the hack-a-thon, what facebook employees are calling their all nighters last night. they're going to be here to virtually ring and open the nasdaq here in menlo park in silicon valley instead of new
5:03 am
york. that's a bit of the power of the social network by the time facebook trades, it's expected to be well above that $38 price. where it goes from there, well, we'll be following that for the days and weeks to come. we're reporting live from facebook campus, back to you. >> all right, scott, thank you very much. the ipo making about 1,000 employees a whole lot richer. what they'll do with all that money, that's a good question. "today in the bay's" marla tellez also outside facebook. turns out they've started spending some of those big dollars. >> reporter: can you blame them, scott? that is right. good morning to you. this money, though, really more like monopoly money at this point. but you know what? it's already benefitting the local economy. in fact, what we found it is good to be a high-end retailer right about now. the sound of the bell has never been so sweet for facebook employees who in an instant are now millionaires. the company alone expected to rake in $15 billion, and that
5:04 am
makes silicon valley as green as ever. >> it's that market unlike anything else i've ever seen. >> reporter: even before today's ipo, home prices in the region have spiked as much as nearly 20% with starter homes going for close to $2 million, and the buyers are young. >> some in their early 20s who are buying multimillion dollar. generally in the early 20s, multimillion dollar condos. >> reporter: comes high demand for a luxury car. this lexus dealership is reaping the rewards. >> we even saw some business from facebook in the previous month. so i think some of those folks thought, well, i'm going to get the money, so i'll go ahead and get the car now. >> reporter: who needs a car when you can fly? >> think of it like netflix dvds. you get a dvd, watch it, send it back. we do the same thing with boarding passes. >> reporter: l.a.-based surf air is getting ready to launch. all you can fly private airline company for about $1,000, members can fly first class in one of these slick swiss-made
5:05 am
jets from palo alto to los angeles, for instance. the ceo is banking his company will take off thanks to, in part, mark zuckerberg's dorm room creation. >> this is cheaper than a sports car payment. >> in case you are interested in surf air. it's in the process of getting approval from the faa. it is expected to launch this summer. now, scott as you and i talked about yesterday, $1,000 a month for all you can fly really not all that bad. in fact, i'll take that any day over all you can eat. >> sounds fair. marla tellez out near facebook headquarters this morning. you know, it's been said that one of the best things about an ipo is that your employees do get rich. and one of the worst things about an ipo, your employees get rich. i talked with scott about that, he founded his company when he was exactly mark zuckerberg's age and he says i'm terrified for mark. jon and laura, we're going to take a look at that.
5:06 am
>> what than interesting perspective he will have. thank you very much. this morning, a facebook co-founder lashing out against senate democrats accusing him of skirting u.s. tax laws. he recently gave up his u.s. citizenship saying his decision to live in singapore is purely personal. but some u.s. senators say the move means savron will pay fewer taxes than if he stayed a u.s. citizen and sold his shares after the stock sale. in a statement he says, i am obligated and will pay hundreds of millions of dollars to the united states government. i have paid and will continue to pay any taxes due on everything i earned while a u.s. citizen. there is a law on the books that keeps people from setting foot in the u.s. ever again if they renounce their citizenship for tax purposes. but lawyers say it's never been enacted because it's hard to prove. plus, the irs is not supposed to reveal tax information. and we will have continuing coverage of that public offering
5:07 am
throughout the entire morning from our team of reporters as mark zuckerberg steps up to ring the opening bell at the nasdaq, as well as live reports from our partner cnbc from their world headquarters and our very own bob redell, that will be coming up. and of course, for complete coverage, check out nbcbayarea.com, all you have to do is search facebook. >> facebook friday around here, but it is friday and we're looking for that forecast with christina loren. >> yeah, good morning to you. a lot more comfortable here in palo alto to start in new york city. so another brilliant decision. so we're starting out at 50 degrees even in san francisco. comfortable conditions as we head throughout this afternoon, by noon, in fact, you might be considering breaking for lunch outdoors. 72 degrees at noon, concord, 76 in antioch, and 56 degrees at noon in los gatos, hitting 80 decr degrees later on. and you will notice the clouds for the first part of the day. they should only be at the coast and over the bay.
5:08 am
i don't think we're going to see that marine layer penetrate inland this morning. but mostly cloudy conditions to start will make way to brilliant sunshine, and the warm-up is on. a lot happening outdoors this weekend. you'll need to stick around for that coming up. first, let's check your drive with mike. >> a lot happening outdoors right now. you're looking at the south bay, it's road work, typical about this time of day, look at all these spots, but just after 5:00, they should just be clearing right now just as we speak. 880 north of 280 and 85 north of 280. no slowing past any of those scenes. the blips for 87 and 880 off of 101, those should clear up. i'll track it, there are no incidents reported for the south bay. between shoreline and marsh, those crews clearing through palo alto and the dumbarton bridge as you're traveling over to the newark side, construction crews will remain there probably until 6:00 a.m. or right about there. a note that i am also joining in on the team, i feel left out.
5:09 am
there's my coverage of all the facebook off ramps. okay. anyway. >> good. >> you know what? we like it. >> thank you. oh, excellent. good, good, there'll be distractions there and the sign. looking over to east bay, 880, smooth flow of traffic. all the way to the south bay to the bay bridge toll plaza. more updates coming up, back to you. >> 5:09 right now. coming up, a new tech company on the rise as an older tech company takes a big hit. job cuts for hp just ahead. and developing news out of berkeley this morning where a driver lost control and hit a tree and was turned into a fatal accident, but also involved a child. i'm christie smith, that story coming up. and keeping with that facebook friday theme, that is from menlo park. one emphatic thumbs up. why wouldn't it be? about $16 billion rolling in. and here's a facebook fun
5:10 am
fact, the most searched term in the u.s., it has been since july 18th, 2009. >> interesting. and for the latest news, traffic, and weather, check us out on, guess what? facebook. it's that kind of friday.re a.lot.ch nbc bay are g for? -my allergy medicine to work. -allegra is fast. [ female announcer ] only allegra combines fast, non-drowsy, 24-hour relief. -gotta go. - [ female announcer ] allegra. fast and non-drowsy relief.
5:11 am
5:12 am
welcome back, everyone. a live look from new york city. outside of the nasdaq this morning. facebook ipos today. mark zuckerberg going to ring the opening bell remotely. we've got full team coverage this morning, 5:12. a developing story this morning out of berkeley. police right now at the scene of a fatal accident. one person did, two others taken to a hospital with serious injuries.
5:13 am
"today in the bay's" christie smith with all the latest developments. good morning. what's happening out there? >> reporter: good morning to you, jon. just a horrible accident out here this morning. this car hit a tree so hard that firefighters actually had to cut the top off just to get everyone out. three people inside that car, one of them has died at the scene. we've also learned that there was a child inside of that car taken to a trauma center with very serious injuries. the driver also suffered serious injuries in this accident this morning. this is at california and alsten way happened after 1:00 this morning. a solo vehicle accident. right now, berkeley's fatal accident investigation team, part of the police department is out here trying to piece together why a driver lost control. >> when one loses kro l control car, there's usually some kind of dynamic involved whether it's mechanical failure, speed, or whether certainly this morning we don't seem to have a weather
5:14 am
issue. so we're going to be looking at all those indicators to try to determine what happened here. >> so, again, two adults in the car in their 20s and a child. the adult passenger died. we asked if they might be students at u.c. berkeley or residents here in berkeley, and they say at this point they don't know. they're still trying to contact the family. but you definitely want to stay out of the area if at all possible, you need to get through here, take another route because they're telling me this intersection and the surrounding streets will be closed for another two to three hours while they continue their investigation. reporting live in berkeley, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much, christie. in fact, mike keeping his eye on that area, as well. >> this is california street at allston. the university itself, which is one of the major east/west connectors, that is open. it's a couple of blocks to the north. avoid the intersection of california at allston, but
5:15 am
university coming off the freeway and continuing over in the eastbound direction. as far as i understand, both directions are open right now. and in the area, we also have the east shore freeway. for the most part, that's moving smoothly. the earlier accident here is still over on the shoulder, but sounds like there's debris in the westbound direction approaching central and so there will be a traffic break over the next few minutes. chp alerted us to that. keep that in mind if you're coming down between hercules and san pablo. meanwhile, we'll get a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza. see how the volume is shaping up over here. no major issues, and the flow pretty light. you can see the commute direction. back to the maps if you're heading the other direction, you're okay up toward the carquinez bridge, through the north bay, a note, we have some changes here. one of the accidents just off of jameson canyon has cleared, the other highway 29, that roadway, that intersection is currently has traffic control because of an earlier accident there, as well. keep that in mind, but the rest of your north bay, no major delays and no ma job problems as
5:16 am
far as i can tell. we don't have a whole lot of fog, but there is some changes in store for us, right? >> yeah, changes on the way as well as this afternoon. i wanted to start with a live look over san francisco. beautiful sky shaping up here. i do believe we will see that marine layer push in over the course of the next couple of hours. but we're starting out nice and clear, getting the best drive of the morning. it's not windy any longer and that fog has not yet settled in. we will let you know as soon as it does. the calm winds right now along the peninsula and through most of your inland cities. temperatures are mild to start. 51 degrees, good morning to you. headed toward the 70s and 80s today. as high pressure is moving back in from the south. this is going to keep our temperatures nice and warm all weekend long. so if you've been hesitating making those weekend plans because of the weather, well, they are not going to keep you indoors. the weather will keep you outdoors basically all weekend long, it's going to be nice and comfortable. it all works out like this. we're going to see temperatures in the 80s in the warmest cities across the bay today. then by tomorrow, we'll tack on
5:17 am
an additional 5 to 8 degrees. it all works out like this, 78 degrees on saturday, sunday, 84 degrees. don't forget, you can catch the giants right here on nbc bay area tonight at 7:00, the bay bridge series. chances are, if you've lived here in the bay area your whole life you're an a's or giants fan and you have a vested interest in tonight's game. we'll have that forecast coming up. also on sunday, a very rare treat. an anular lunar eclipse. right now, back to you guys. >> thank you very much. 5:17. more now on the social offering. when facebook starts trading shares this morning, it'll make many employees there very, very wealthy. scott mcgrew says it's actually going to be a big problem for managers. how do you tell a millionaire what to do? >> that's a very silicon valley problem, laura. we've seen all kinds of employees become very rich over the years. the classic example of that is the millionaire secretary from netscape back in the day. every company says we're not going to change, money's not
5:18 am
going to affect us. we won't listen to wall street, we're going to stay on mission. well, some founder scott mcneilly says with facebook shares priced so very, very high compared to the company's revenue, zuckerberg faces a tough road ahead. >> it will make a difference in their lifestyle based on what the stock price is doing. >> what can you do about it? >> i'm terrorized for the poor guy. and if i were to make some personal wealth recommendations to him, i would tell him to sell any and all of his stock that he can as fast as he can any time the stock is valued at, you know, more than 10 to 15 times revenue. >> let's talk time line. 6:30 this morning mark zuckerberg rings the opening bell, that's largely ceremonial. some ceos choose to make a speech ahead of time. and if he does that, we'll bring it to you probably around 6:20. then the securities and exchange
5:19 am
commission has cleared facebook's stock as fb. it's not all milk and honey on the peninsula this morning. at the same time, 1,000 people will become millionaires, tens of thousands of people are faced with losing their jobs at hewlett-packard. we turn to seema mody at cnbc headquarters. good morning. >> good morning, yeah. that's right, hewlett-packard is reportedly planning to cut up to 30,000 jobs or just 8% of its global workforce. as it battles falling sales and profits. reports say the cuts will come from across the board, although the final number isn't set. a formal announcement is set for next wednesday. in other news, taking a look at markets, futures are slightly higher after yet another selloff. the markets can't seem to shake off the worries over europe's debt crisis. there are concerns that greece's eventual exit from the euro could lead to a run on the banks, not just in that country, but other debt-strapped nations including italy, spain, as well as portugal. last night, moody's cut credit
5:20 am
ratings of 16 spanish banks citing the weak economy. asia overnight sank, europe is trading in negative territory, and here in the u.s., there is no major economic data out today. the dow did fall for a fifth straight day down 156 points, the nasdaq losing 60 to 2,813. guys, that's a wrap, back over to you. >> all right, thank you much. i saw this on twitter, thought you might like it. why is facebook going public? because they couldn't figure out the privacy settings either. >> that's a good one. >> i thought that was a good rim shot. >> good deal. thanks so much, scott. coming up, bill cosby, gets ready for a little stand-up comedy in the commencement ceremony. taking a live look outside. golden gate bridge this morning. i've got that look. yeah, a nice one. not as foggy as in days past, we'll check the forecast coming up. here's a fun fact, users
5:21 am
just cannot stay away. the average user spends six hours a month on the social networking site.
5:22 am
5:23 am
welcome back, everybody. yes, it is a worldwide phenomenon. that's right, that is the menlo park headquarters. for facebook. >> look at people in their hoodies out there. >> yeah, feeling the magic. >> wore a hoodie today. >> and the fever is sweeping from coast-to-coast. from menlo park out on the west coast all the way to new york city and time square. that's right, front and center, facebook going to be making some magic happening on the nasdaq today. it'll be interesting watching that stock bounce up and see how people jump all over it. it is 5:23.
5:24 am
we welcome the weekend forecast coming in, as well, checking in with christina. >> we always welcome the weekend, no matter what the wealthy holds. but this weekend, mother nature doing it just again. we're getting some fantastic conditions just in time for the weekend. and yesterday, kind of a cloudy, dreary day, and the winds picked up and all the cloud cover cleared out. ended up being ptty nice. 51 degrees to start you out in san jose, 49 in livermore, and 58 degrees for now in san francisco headed toward the 70s by noon and rounding out the day with plenty of 80s on your temperature map. this sunday, we are going to get a rare treat. an anular eclipse. and the eclipse happens when the moon passes over the sun. and the apparent diameter is going to be smaller than the sun making an apparent ring of fire. it's going to be really cool. your best viewing time will be 6:32. more on this coming up, let's check your drive with mike. folks, you can head up to some of the local observatories.
5:25 am
lawrence hall of science will have that, as well. and a smooth drive for the east shore freeway and the approach is to the bay bridge. but we have an updated location from chp. the earlier accident not off the east shore freeway, it's eastbound 580 at central where they're doing the traffic break. that means folks coming off that richmond san rafael bridge will have that to contend with. watch for flashing lights, but no slowing, guys. funny man bill cosby will be honored by a san francisco university today. the comedian will receive an honorary doctorate degree from the university of san francisco. he'll also give the commencement address to undergraduate students in arts and social sciences. >> whenever i see bill, i'm in the mood for a little jell-o pop. >> nice. it is 5:25 right now. still ahead on your mark, get set, ipo. that's right. team coverage of facebook's initial public offering just ahead. giving the big thumbs up, a lot of activity outside the facebook headquarters this

5:29 am
scott budman live at facebook headquarters. employees have been hanging out all night in anticipation. live in menlo park with a look at all the local buzz. good morning, scott. >> good morning, laura. we are going to cover this all dave. let's talk about a time line this morning. at 6:30, mark zuckerberg will ring the nasdaq opening bell. that's largely symbolic then. at 7:00, the s.e.c. has cleared facebook to start trading as fb, and the wealth truly begins. let's go to scott budman live outside facebook headquarters. scott, give us an idea as far as the excitement out there. >> reporter: there's a lot of it, scott. you know, the silicon valley as you know is known for starting early in the day. but there's been a lot of traffic coming in to facebook. this is not a day that any of the employees want to miss. after all, like you mentioned, the nasdaq is coming out to our neck of the woods. a bell ringing where ceo mark
5:30 am
zuckerberg will open the exchange, a lot of people want to be here for that. in fact, a lot of facebook employees arrived last night to sleep over so they wouldn't miss this. facebook called it a hackathon, a chance to keep focus on what facebook does for a living, i.e., building out a social network and not worry about the ipo and stock prices and things like that. that said, there is a lot of buzz around here, not just on this campus, but in the entire community about the facebook ipo. the company as of last night because it priced its shares at $38 each, pulling in nearly $16 billion in overall sales. that is money that can go to hire more people, build more buildings, try to expand in china, increase its mobile presence, all that sort of thing. and as of today, the buzz is that you, i, and everybody else will get their shot at owning a piece of facebook for the first time. as you mentioned, that's expected to happen a little bit after the nasdaq opens. and again, doesn't happen all
5:31 am
that often, the nasdaq itself coming to silicon valley. it will open here in an hour on facebook campus. that's where we're live today, sending it back to you. >> you've interviewed mark zuckerberg in the past. i don't know we give him enough credit. 28 years old. he's interviewed the president, handled that very well. he's going to go in front of the whole world and launch this company for a 28-year-old who actually doesn't speak very much, he's under a lot of pressure this morning. >> reporter: yeah, he really is, scott. you mentioned. i have had a chance to sit down with him a couple times and talk. and people are thinking wow, he's so young, what's he like? he's right in that wheel house of facebook users. not only started it, he gets it. he gets the buildout, why people like photos, he understands time line. he is the reason for the success of this company. and yes, he has a very good head on his shoulders and is willing to admit that when it comes to the ipo, money takes care of itself, he'll let the bankers
5:32 am
and lawyers take care of all of that stuff and there are a lot of them that work here. in fact, some 33 banking institutions, a huge number for an individual ipo are handling the facebook offering. so plenty of professionals are backing up mr. zuckerberg. >> scott, thank you. now, when it comes to buying a share of the social networking giant. who's in? who's out? bob redell live in menlo park where people are weighing in this morning. good morning, bob. >> yeah, good morning, we were actually just trying to talk to people out here about, let's say you had the money and you want to invest. would you buy shares in facebook when it ipos in just a couple of hours from now? well, here's what some people had to say this morning outside this coffee shop down the street from facebook headquarters. >> short-term, a year, definitely dive in. >> after that? >> after that be cautious because i think the reality's enjoying to set in just like when the stock market burst in 2000. >> you have to take a chance and risk it. >> and if you had the coin? >> if i had the coin, i would do
5:33 am
it. >> it doesn't do anything. it doesn't make anything. >> you don't think it's a good investment? >> not for me. >> reporter: now, if you're curious what facebook's going to do today as far as its numbers, the cost of its share, we know it's going to ipo at $38, but the actual trading -- trading's not going to start for another hour to two hours afterwards. if you are going to track it today and you are curious, hey, why haven't i seen anything yet? that's the explanation why. reporting live in menlo park. bob redell, "today in the bay." s.e.c. has cleared it to start trading at 7:00, doesn't necessarily mean it will. fortunately on the nasdaq with an electronic exchange, you are looking at a much faster turn around than on the new york stock exchange which does often take much of the morning to get going. big moment just about an hour away. that's the actual opening of the nasdaq. we will continue our live coverage coast-to-coast throughout the morning. for complete coverage, check out our website, as well, nbcbayarea.com and, of course,
