we'll show you the picture in a bit where the elite runners kickoff just about now. and the regular folks that like to get crazy, they start in about a half hour. thanks so much for joining us. i'm kris sanchez with rob mayeda. folks won't have to run naked, because it is not going to be hot. >> that's right, we don't encourage that activity. >> we don't, people do. >> watching that video this morning carefully. in the 50s this morning, not too bad when you consider clear skies and little hint of a sea breeze. we'll see that change later this afternoon. we manage one more warm day if not hot day inland by the tri-valley. numbers by livermore and pleasanton, mid to upper 80s. 70s in the inner bay. san francisco on the coast, notice the trend. by 5:00, mostly cloudy skies. we're going to see a change in the forecast arriving late in the weekend, which will push

more low clouds towards the coast. coming up, we'll let you know what that means in terms of the solar eclipse feeling and big drop in temperatures coming into the full work week. a look at the changes in the forecast in a few minutes. >> thank you very much, rob. to that developing news out of northern italy. rescue crews are searching for survivors after a 6.0 magnitude quake that killed at least six people. it struck around 4:00 in the morning local time, 22 miles north of balance own i can't. it lasted more than a minute, sending thousands of italians running into the street. at least 50 people are injured. right now, crews are searching for additional victims trapped under the rubble. we will bring more details as we get them. police in chicago face a big test trying to keep the peace. they're dealing with protesters gathered for opening day at the nato summit where president obama and other world leaders will gather. they will meet after three men were arrested, accused of

planning to attack president obama's campaign headquarters as well as mayor rahm emanuel's home and other targets. they appeared in a federal courtroom yesterday. defense attorneys for the suspects say the charges are trumped up to frighten protesters. >> this is extremely sensationalized allegation, and this is exactly what we anticipate from law enforcement and from various levels of government before national security event. >> they say they are self described and arch ises that boasted about damage they would do in chicago. meantime, today at the summit, president obama and other world leaders are expected to draft the road map out of the war in afghanistan. on the heels of a history making ipo, mark zuckerberg, ceo of facebook, had another big day. he got married, and it was all kept secret until the groom posted a wedding photo and changed his relationship status

on his facebook page. today, we report from palo alto on the event and big time wedding guests as well. >> reporter: fewer than 100 guests came to mark zuckerberg's house in palo alto saturday afternoon for what they thought was a party to celebrate priscilla chan's graduation from medical school. instead, it was a wedding in his backyard. these photos show the happy couple after the ceremony. a person authorized to speak on their behalf said chan's ring featured a simple ruby. at 8:30, the lead singer of green day was seen leaving zuckerberg's house. he had a guitar, we assume he was there to perform. as it grew, guests danced to pop songs, and neighbors didn't seem to mind. >> it is cool. everybody likes to party. why shouldn't zuckerberg party, sure. >> reporter: the marriage announcement came where else but on facebook, where he changed his status to married to

priscilla chan. they met at harvard, dated for nine years. their wedding caps a busy week for them both. zuckerberg's birthday and chan's graduation from medical school were both monday. then on friday, zuckerberg rang the bell for nasdaq on facebook's first day of public trading. even in the shadow of the tech world's biggest ipo, this night may be perhaps the most memorable of all. >> i think it is cool. they have been dating a long time. you know, they're in love i guess, and i wish them happiness, good for them, right? >> reporter: monte francis, today in the bay. >> no word where the couple is headed for their honeymoon. an interesting note on mark zuckerberg's facebook page, he posted announcement of the marriage and had 700 times more likes than the announcement of the facebook ipo. that's an indication how many are reacting to this big news. police try to find the owners of a burned out warehouse

in downtown oakland where firefighters battling that blaze discovered a sizable illegal marijuana operation. the fire reported about 4:00 yesterday morning at a warehouse on broadway near 30th. flames shot 20 feet into the air, took fire crews several hours to get flames under control. once they did at the back of the warehouse, found 200 pot plants, large filtering system and electrical system altered to support that grow operation. >> blew my mind. i just had no idea. quiet tenants, nice people, older couple people that used it as a restaurant warehouse. that's the only thing i had seen. >> police are waiting to execute search warrants to remove plants and other evidence. fire officials say the fire caused about a half million dollars in damage. volunteers cleaning a south bay river made a gruesome discovery. found the body of a man in his 50s. no foul play is suspected in his

death, and police say the volunteers found the body 10:30 yesterday morning as they were cleaning the guadalupe river in san jose. a mother pushes to name a south bay post office after her son killed in iraq is moving forward. kenneth fowler died eight years ago. his mother wants the downtown post office on hope to be named after him. at a tuesday meeting, the city council is said to approve a resolution in support of that proposal. runners and walkers are hitting the pavement for one of the wackiest races in the bay area and probably the country. the 101st running of the beta breakers. nowadays, you can't drink and you have to keep your clothes on, although it is still option. the san francisco race still has a uniquely bay area charm. police are out in full force keeping people on their best behavior and the job to enforce

fun but also to enforce two things from last year, one, zero tolerance on alcohol and ban on floats. san francisco is expecting close to 50,000 runners to take part in this year's race. elite runners got started about eight minutes ago, and the rest of the folks take off in 20 minutes. here is the race route that began at beal and howard streets. it will finish at great highway. if you plan on driving into the city today, make sure you do a little research and plan your route. streets on the race course will be shut down until about 11:00. streets in golden gate park and great highway will be closed until 4:00 this afternoon. some community bus routes also will be changed. a historical navy battleship is set to travel under the golden gate bridge headed for a new home. uss iowa was undergoing restoration in richmond. from its mooring there, it will be taken to sorp california where it is supposed to be

good morning, looking live at the fair city, waking up to a cool start but nice day overall. get ready for another dip in temperatures. we will talk with rob again an bit. naacp made a move some call historic. the country's oldest sifl rights group voted to endorse same sex marriage, which has long divided

african-americans. given the timing of the vote, it is likely to be viewed both as a statement of principle as well as support for the president endorsement of gay marriage. the group issued a statement saying the naacp will, quote, oppose efforts to codify discrimination into law. the strongest opposition to gay weddings within the black community has come from church leaders whose opinions may not be swayed by the naacp. blind chinese activist chen guangcheng woke up in the united states for the first time. he is now in an apartment in manhattan greenwich village where chen and his family plan to live. they arrived from china last night. the complex houses faculty and graduate students of new york university where he is expected to attend law school. it has been almost a month since his dramatic escape from house arrest. he was under arrest seven years because of outspoken opposition to forced abortions and other social issues.

the rest of us. think i'll keep the sweater on today. >> it is cool this morning. saw the sunshine around san francisco. a pretty nice start. going through the rest of the day, should be a warm day inland before cooler changes arrive, getting back to the work week. right now in san francisco, 53 degrees, nice start. 53 in oakland, 56 in san jose, 55 in livermore. right now, not much of a sea breeze. still have a little west, northwest wind at 13, winds out of the southwest into fairfield. those winds are picking up through the afternoon, hinting at cooler changes as we get out of the weekend, get back to the work week. inland valleys, nice and warm inland. on the coast, you will see low clouds come back. as on shore winds pick up, we'll see much cooler temperatures, especially come monday and tuesday along with windy conditions at times. satellite and radar, high clouds crossing the northern california coastline. most of it stays north of the

bay area until late today or tonight into tomorrow. we will see more high clouds sweeping on in. we're going to be watching the jet stream dropping to the south during the day tomorrow. leads to a big drop in temperatures. a super charge, that sea breeze. even showers north of santa rosa as temperatures drop off middle part of the week. here is the pornographic to show you going through the afternoon and evening. 6:00 or 6:30, get the maximum viewing of that partial solar eclipse, some fog tries to creep in. here is the good news. doesn't look like it rounds san francisco and go into the inner bay. most of the bay area if it holds up should have good viewing with most fog on the sea shore. as you go through tonight, then the fog punches in. once the marine layer deep ens, temperatures monday start to really drop off. if you like 80s, enjoy today's weather. mid-80s easily south of san jose

and towards livermore. 82 in san jose. 75 in santa cruz before low clouds come back. mid-80s in pleasanton, mid-80s to concord and fairfield. warming around san francisco and the peninsula. 60s and 70s around noon, then by midafternoon, sea breeze cranked up with winds out of the west 15 to 25 miles per hour. and eventually low clouds in the bay into monday morning. today, warmest day in the next seven days. temperatures really start to cool down, especially inland monday into tuesday. we will see some windy conditions at times, pretty gusty, too. gusts may get close to 40 miles per hour come wednesday. other item to watch towards next weekend, memorial day weekend looks unsettled. cool temperatures and very possibly some showers coming in for saturday. still a long ways off. hopefully the forecast changes, cut off lows tend to do weird things with the weather.

did. >> reporter: martha jones didn't take up running until her 40s. once she started, it stuck. >> i am down to four days a week. i think health wise, it's amazing, really is. such a great deal for you. and i know when i don't do it, i don't feel as good. >> reporter: every year since 1984, martha has run the bay to breakers. >> i remember the first time my granddaughter ran with me, which has been a few years ago, she was flabbergasted with the news people. >> reporter: while she isn't able to run the entire course any more. >> i am not speedy by any matter or means. >> reporter: she still loves the spectacle of it. >> fun people, interesting people, everyone is very friendly, and yeah. get a big kick out of it. >> reporter: but after 28 consecutive years, martha says this might be her last run at bay to breakers. the self sufficient grandmother that still holds a part-time

about 22 miles north of bol own a. it sent thousands running into the streets. more than 50 people injured and folks are expecting, rescue workers expect to find more of them, searching under all of that rubble for survivors and also for possible victims as well. back here at home, thousands of protesters are expected in chicago for the nato summit. protesters from occupy movement will join forces with an anti-war coalition, and the threat of violence is real. last week, police in chicago say they discovered and stopped a terrorist plot connected to the nato summit. police arrested these three men, accused of planning to attack the president's campaign headquarters as well as mayor rahm emanuel's home and other targets. today, president obama, other world leaders will gather

he took the company public. this morning, an 18-year-old man is recovering after a gang related shooting. happened on the 1600 block of honeysuckle drive. a man had at least one gunshot wound. was hospitalized with nonlife-threatening injury. investigators say the shooting was gang related and so far haven't arrested any suspects. in san jose, an unsettles discovery for volunteers that showed up to clean up the guadalupe river. instead, they found the body of a man believed to be in his 50s, no foul play is suspected in his death. police say the volunteers found that body yesterday morning. this year for the first time since lawmakers have approved a bill, a conservative group urges parents to keep kids home tuesday. the group, save california is

running tv ads warning parents any classroom information about the murdered san francisco supervisor would be immoral indoctrination. harvey mills day is may 22nd. on that day, schools are encouraged to discuss the openly gay lawmaker's fight for civil rights. a concert will be held at fox theater in redwood city, will feature several local bands. it was organized by michelle rubin stein. she assembled a group of teens and together they planned that concert, secured more than $12,000 in donations for suicide prevention programs. a lightning strike turned out to be lucky for two homeless brothers. alfred and george were struck by lightning camping on mt. diablo after losing their home to foreclosure. since the story aired, people

time in nearly 20 years, an annular solar eclipse will be visible in most part of the united states. joining us, jonathan braidman from the space and science center. thanks for joining us, last time they heard annular, it was annual. what is that? >> annular solar eclipse is when the moon is far enough away from the earth it appears to be smaller than the sun. therefore, instead of covering the sun like a total eclipse, this has a ring of sunlight, ring of fire you can see from some parts of california today. >> talk about the fact it is not safe to look at it directly. we should emphasize that, you can really hurt your eyes. >> go out and see it, don't look at it directly. you can damage your eyesight. you want to use welders glass number 14. if you can see through glasses, they're not good enough to look at the sun. the best way to do it is to look through a pin hole camera. you can use your hands to make

of a hassle in the summer months. now airports are taking steps to make it less stressful. might be surprised what you see in your next layover. get this story from john yang. >> reporter: getting from point a to point b by plane these days often means a lot of time at point c, long layovers, late connections and those weather delays. at the atlanta airport, rick nelson spent a recent layover in a rented private cubicle right off the concourse. a company called minute suites rents them $30 an hour. sound proof, have a tv for entertainment, desk for working, and for napping, a day bed. nelson spends eight hours a week in airports, often trying to work at a crowded gate. >> how does this compare to that? >> 100% better. >> reporter: they're in atlanta and philadelphia, plan to open later in dallas and minneapolis. more than half the clientele are

the haven from the maddening crowd in the terminal. >> reporter: one of the ways travelers try to find peace and quiet. john yang, nbc news, atlanta. from a workout at the airport to running and walking for one of the wackiest races in the bay area, 101st running of the bay breakers race is under way. this is video just into the newsroom. like to delay it a bit, never know what can happen. nowadays, you can't drink, have to keep your close on. the san francisco race has bay area charm. police are out in full force, keeping thousands of people on their best behavior. they say their job is to, quote, enforce fun. but they're also enforcing two bans adopted last year, one zero tolerance on alcohol, the other, a ban on floats. san francisco expects close to 50,000 runners to take part this year. still ahead on today in the bay, three extremely rare cubs born at a zoo.

welcome back. a live look at oakland this morning, mostly sunny and mostly pleasant forecast going into the afternoon. one that's going to be a little warm if not hot for inland valleys. show you the temperatures in a moment. for the most part, i think the weather should behave for the bay area as we watch the relatively rare annular solar eclipse viewing. it peaks bouts 6:32. should get good viewing, except at the coast. this is the first of three big events. we have the overnight lunar eclipse coming june 4th, which

you can safely view that at night, unlike the solar eclipse where you want to protect your eyes or watch it here on nbc bay area at 5:00 and 6:00 tonight. and the transit of venus june 5th. you have one, two, three of these events. that, too, you want to find your way to the science center, you need special gear to see that. not something you can see with the naked eye. places like that can show you that rare transit of venus june 5th. right now, fairly mild outside. upper 50s around fairfield and concord. seeing a little sea breeze this morning, but that will be turning stronger as we head through the afternoon, thanks to a weather system that's making for some bad viewing across oregon and washington for the partial view of the annular eclipse. notice northern california is seeing a few high clouds there around eureka and reddick. 6:00, when you see prime viewing, 6:30, maybe from pacifica to half moon bay,

you'll see a few low clouds coming in. more of them spill in later tonight into monday morning hinting at cooler changes in the forecast. getting past today, 80s inland. warm finish to the weekend south of san jose and east towards livermore. we see temperatures in mid to upper 80s. then around 4:00, we see a sea breeze kick in. these areas, some good viewing of the eclipse for east bay valleys. if you get to the north bay, san francisco, parts of the peninsula may get 70s before the sea breeze turns on. you can see temperatures 70s to low 80s in wine country, low 60s on the coast. watch for the low clouds late day in pacifica, half moon bay. the trend in the forecast, warmer inland. low clouds going back to the coast this evening. monday, temperatures start to drop and they drop a lot more as you go through the week. tuesday probably gets drizzle and windy conditions as the trough kicks off to the east

into wednesday, and look at the temperatures, 60s and 70s. and for now, still a chance of some showers, especially out towards the sierra as you get to memorial day weekend next weekend. again, solar eclipse viewing looks good around the bay area. only exception to the rule may be the coast and maybe areas in far northern california. the best viewing in northern california goes from eureka, redding, to reno, probably getting a better view there than we will. 85% coverage around 6:30. should be dramatic site. >> don't look up, look through. >> exactly. a rare treat for animal lovers in india where three rare white tiger cubs were born at the zoo. zookeepers are keeping a close watch on the cubs while they adjust to their new environment and making sure their mother and the cubs aren't disturbed except for quick video. they brought in a tiger and tigress in january. white bengal tigers are very
