"today in the bay's" marla tellez live with more on the presidential pitch in the bay area. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the president has another full day ahead of him. once he gets going here at the

fairmont hotel here in downtown san jose. we'll give you a look at the scene. of course, no surprise, plenty of security here. san jose police officers, secret service, i can tell you this downtown plaza is completely barricaded off today. now, we can tell you what it looked like when he arrived here wednesday night. his motorcade pulling up to the hotel after a night of high-end fund raising. he was in good company with the likes of legendary musicians. he gave a nine-minute speech before dinner talking about jobs, education, and ending the war in afghanistan. with about 60 people onhand, he pulled in close to $2.2 million for that dinner alone. then it was off to the fox theater in redwood city where he was met by protesters, but supporters say $250 to $7,500 to get a seat in the audience. mr. obama took to the podium and touted silicon valley. >> the stuff that's going on

here can be traced back to investments we made together. that then gave the opportunity, created the platform for google and facebook and you name it because we understood that there's some things that we have to do together. >> well, today it is a private breakfast here at the fairmont for 20 asian-american pacific islander contributors. they are paying close to $36,000 for breakfast. that starts at 8:30. now, if you do the math, that is another $716,000 the president is adding to his campaign coffers. all in all, he'll be adding another $3 million or so. that's how much he's expected to raise while here in the bay area. now his trip gets wrapped up at 10:00 this morning when he's expected to take off from moffett field. no doubt, this is going to impact traffic in the bay area. for that, send it back to the studio for mike inouye to pick

up the traffic from there. >> we had our friend travel around the vicinity and she's saying the same thing you are. the perimeter of the fairmont is what you're watching. let's get a live look. there's the tech and across the street, there's mccormick and the grill over at the fairmont. that plaza, of course, is closed off to the round traffic there in the round and also the perimeter, san fernando, san carlos and first as well as the park itself. though are the major roadways coming into downtown. expect reroutes, basically. on the maps, we don't expect problems on the perimeters. 280, and overall the south bay only has typical slowing for 101, guys. we'll track it and back to you. well, mitt romney is on the other side of the country this morning. and we get you all wired in with a live look at his appearance taking place currently at the philadelphia charter school there. mitt talking to the students. he's actually laying out his solution to what he calls a

national education emergency. he says parents of low income and special needs students should get to choose their child's school. there are a couple of prominent republicans in the bay area this morning. wisconsin congressman paul ryan and possible romney running mate will attend a breakfast. the event was moved from gap headquarters in san francisco to avoid protesters. also in the bay area, house speaker john boehner. the republican congressional leader visited woodside last night for a fundraiser at a private home. our cameras caught his motorcade coming and going. tickets for that event topped out at more than $35,000 each. throe daee days after being arrested, antolin garcia-torres will make his first court appearance today. live in san jose this morning where the d.a. will officially file those murder charges against that suspect. christie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, jon. you know, this may end up being a very brief court appearance

this afternoon. what will happen is the judge will read the charges against antolin garcia-torres and then the d.a. will have his turn releasing a statement of facts that basically support the charges that are being filed. prosecutors say they believe they have enough evidence to send the 21-year-old to prison. the charges will formally be filed today. garcia-torres was arrested monday at a morgan hill safeway store. one day later the santa clara county sheriff says there is direct and circumstantial evidence to show that he kidnapped and killed 15-year-old sierra lamar. she disappeared on march 16th on her way to school after her cell phone and a bag of clothes were found and investigators say the bag had garcia-torres' dna. even so, our legal analyst says without a body, murder charges may be hard to prove. >> the defendant may say he dropped sierra lamar off after the kidnapping and has no idea what happened to her after that. that's why this forensic evidence is key.

>> now, he also says that if dna evidence inside of the red jetta that investigators say belonged to garcia-torres shows proof of trauma, well, then prosecutors have a much stronger case even without a body. the d.a. could do a couple of things. he could decide to go after the death penalty or even drop the murder charge at least until he gets a little bit more evidence. reporting live in san jose, christie smith, "today in the bay." and new this morning, a major new development in the case of a boy who vanished more than 30 years ago. new york police say they are questioning a new jersey man in connection with etan paetz' kidnapping. it launched the era of missing children's pictures on the back of milk cartons. the man in custody lived and worked near the boy's neighborhood in 1979 and has made statements implicating himself in the 6-year-old's disappearance. police say they plan to provide further details later on this

morning. 6:06. the investigation into what led up to facebook's ipo appears to be growing. two congressional panels are looking at facebook, regulators, and other stake holders. congressional hearings may not be too far behind. business and tech reporter scott mcgrew with more. good morning. >> good morning. facebook may have awoken the dragon on capitol hill. the blog "the hill" says both the house and senate are indeed talking about congressional hearings to look into the company's botched ipo. not necessarily calling mark zuckerberg to testify. more likely officials from the nasdaq and underwriters like morgan stanley. this is one in a long string of blows for the financial industry. ahead of the big ipo, wall street hoped facebook would bring in what they call retail investors. bring them back into the market. retail investors are you and me, people who buy a few shares on etrade. back in the dot com boom, people having a bit of fun with investing a couple of bucks were

surprise to east contra costa commuters, a new study ranking their daily drive among the nation's worst. the national freeway study naming the drive through antioch the tenth most congested in the entire country. eastbound highway 4 bailey road to somersville road the most congested corridor. the second worst commute in the bay area is the route for the same drivers in the morning on highway 4 westbound. you're going to have to come up with a new plan to get to work if you take light rail or the bus in san francisco. muni shutting down several key routes for an 11-day stretch. it's all starting on may 25th. buses will run in place of train between ocean beach. the jay church line will only operate between balboa and market and church streets. muni says the construction will

make service more reliable. the 22-fillmore, the 37-corbett. more jobs that increase service, part of the transit agency's upcoming budget. that's right b.a.r.t. projecting a surplus of $30 million for the next fiscal year thanks in part to increased ridership and sales tax revenue. the b.a.r.t. board meeting this morning to discuss a spending plan that could include late night weekend bus service between san francisco and the east bay and hiring 60 workers and buying more cars. 6:11. it's no secret we're all proud to call the bay area home. one south bay city has something extra to brag about. kiplinger's personal finance ranks sunnyvale number seven on the list of ten greatest cities to raise your kids. the report sites the city's low cre rate, high academic achievement as reasons to raise your kids there. two other cities also made the list. number nine, corona, number

mosque in northwest pakistan. at least ten people reportedly dead. witnesses say a drone fired two missiles at a mosque during morning prayers. a separate report says locals and militants were inside at the time of the strike. now, the strike coming a day pakistan sentenced a man who helped the u.s. hunt osama bin laden. yeah, that man in the red circle. he'll serve 33 years in prison for treason. senators john mccain and joe liberman calling the verdict outrageous. seven people, five of them firefighters injured this morning after a fire on a nuclear sub. the fire aboard the "uss miami" started yesterday and burned overnight at the naval shipyard. crews just got it knocked down about two hours ago. the reactor aboard the sub was not operating at the time of the fire and was not affected. there were no weapons onboard. nuclear negotiations continue today, meantime, between iran and the international community. talks have stalled after iran

rejected calls to stop enriching uranium which can be used for nuclear weapons as well as demand to end sanctions on the country was refused. iran says its nuclear program is only being used for peaceful purposes. two female soldiers right now suing to end the u.s. military's restrictions on women in combat. the army reservists claiming the policy violates their constitutional rights under the fifth amendment and it restricts their earnings and potential for promotion. announcing earlier this year it would expand roles for women in the army, but stopped short of allowing women to serve in ground combat assignments. a project to build new soccer fields could soon get the green light. a final report will be given to the park commission today. if it is approved, the department would then vote on whether to construct the playing fields and a new light system. the supporters say the project will fix the problem of having to play on muddy grounds.

activists are concerned over wildlife and the neighboring community. the giants take their talents to south beach today, they are taking on the miami marlins starting at 4:10. now they took that series in milwaukee, but they lost last night's ball game. the brewers scored six times in that first inning, beat up barry zito, and the giants not too happy about the playing conditions. chronicle reporting after the game the players mentioned the shadows kept fielders from being able to easily see the balls out there. the brewers, well, they keep the roof half open for day games because the slugger prefers it that way. and some giants don't think one player should actually have that much power over an entire ball game. >> well, you know, giants and the brewers don't always get along. let's go back to september of 2009. >> let's do that. >> yeah, a walk-off home run, brewers celebrated with a tribute to the game of bowling. >> king of the world. >> giants have a long memory.

back to you. >> thanks a lot, mike. hewlett-packard employees will head to work this morning wondering if they are among the very unlucky. scott mcgrew says some workers could be informed as soon as today they are losing their jobs. >> good morning, jon. right. hp's broken down some of the numbers for us. 9,000 workers will leave the company by the end of the year. and the notifications for those 9,000 would start "shortly." now this total number, much bigger, 27,000 jobs gone through early retirement and layoffs over the next two years. hp's biggest reduction in force ever and it's had some doosies. ceo meg whitman talked to reporters wednesday afternoon. in other news she said hp was disappointed by a company called autonomy. it's a company they bought for $10 million less than a year ago. and then they dismissed its ceo. whitman also took a shot at the new french president says every leader in europe concerned over his election.

wall street, we've got the weekly jobless claims, they were largely unchanged, slightly better than expected durable goods orders. facebook gains yesterday. a slight pop on the dow on the open. new york stock exchange denying reports this morning that it's courting facebook trying to get it to move from the nasdaq to the nyse. nasdaq, of course, under fire for handling the facebook ipo in the first few hours of trading. and here's some new video called yahoo axis. it's a brand new app coming from the sunnyvale company that works on ipad and iphone as well as a plug-in for your browser. something new out of yahoo. why exactly they saw fit to make a web browser i'm not entirely sure, but it's free to try and you can see it in the app store. meg whitman is literally on cnbc right now. we'll have sound bites in a little bit. >>. 6:22 right now.

good morning, tracie potts. >> laura, good morning. uncle sam wants to look at whether these cards could be regulated like regular credit cards, debit cards, and gift cards and government cards. right now, they are not, which means if you load money on to one of these prepaid cards, they may have consumer protections and they may not if you lose the card or if it gets stolen. maybe even if that bank fails, do you get your money back? depends on the card. also, the fees can vary. and are not always disclosed clearly and upfront. those types of protections come with regulation. the consumer financial protection bureau wants to hear from you if you use these cards. they've also got a good website consumerfinance.gov with questions and answers about the cards. they have become very popular, 7 million americans using them. will spend this year $86 billion on these cards, double that two years from now. >> a lot of money. still to come on "today in

"today in the bay's" christie smith is live with the challenges facing prosecutors this morning. christie, good morning. >> good morning to you, jon. antolin garcia-torres has been held without bail since his

this entire hotel barricaded off. secret service on hand very heavily secured hotel this morning as it was last night when he arrived at the fairmount close to 11:00. his night was filled with a high-priced dinner at the atherton home of doug goldman. 60 people paying close to $36,000 for a plate. then he took to the stage inside redwood city's fox theater where he got a standing ovation, people chanting fired up and four more years. >> this didn't happen overnight and it's not going to be solved overnight. so we've got more work to do. we know that. and that's why this year's so important. >> reporter: well, a whole lot of handshaking and high fives after his speech that talked about unemployment, higher education, and innovation. supporters in redwood city

paying $250 to $7,500 to get a seat in the audience there. well, today the president was supposed to have an event in palo alto, but that was changed because of logistical reasons. instead, it is a private breakfast here at the fairmont in san jose this morning. 20 supporters paying close to $36,000 to dine with the commander in chief. that gets underway at 8:30. again, he is scheduled to fly out of moffett field at 10:00 this morning. all in all, president obama is expected to raise about $3 million or so in the 16 hours he's here. live in san jose, marla tellez, "today in the bay." in state politics, california voters less than pleased with governor jerry brown. for the first time since he took office, more people disapprove of the governor than approve. the governor's approval rating slipping to 42%, down 5% from april. this coming after governor announced california's budget deficit has grown from $9 billion back in january to almost $16 billion.

welcome back everybody on a thursday morning. we get a live look out there way off in the distance, highway 87 there. some of the lights flowing through the bend. mike inouye will be here to fill you in on the traffic details. state parks facing closure could be saved. senators approved a bill on wednesday to keep parks off the funding list. license plate fees could help to

keep those gates open. nonprofit groups and volunteers would actually help manage the parks. the assembly still has to approve the plan. more than 70 parks are slated to be closed by july 1st. well, those cables to reach the summit of a national landmark will be in place this weekend. the metal cables run along the steep shoulder of the half dome peak. not everybody will be allowed to reach that summit. a limited number of permits to access half moon bay will be handed out each day. the 17-mile trail has very high elevations and is extremely dangerous when wet. we can tell you at least five people have died there since 2006. >> pretty cool. it's 6:42 right now. coming up next, 15 minutes of uninterrupted news including live updates on the president's visit to the south bay. and also, more on sierra lamar's suspected kidnapper in court today. also, a major break in the case of a boy who vanished more than 30 years ago.

welcome back, everybody, on this thursday morning. yes, the golden gate bridge getting a lot of hoopla this weekend with the 75th birthday coming up. but we don't want to forget about alcatraz out there. let's hope alcatraz is at least on the v.i.p. list for the birthday bash. it's 6:45. new this morning, the nypd connecting a man to the boy who vanished more than 30 years ago. police picked that man up last night. they say he worked and lived in

paetz' neighborhood and made statements implicating himself in the boy's disappearance. police plan to provide further details later this morning. also new this morning, a pakistani official and various witnesses telling nbc news a u.s. drone strike hit a village mosque in northwest pakistan. at least ten people right now reported dead. witnesses say a drone fired two missiles at the mosque during morning prayers. a separate report says militants were inside at the time along with some local worshippers. six people are recovering from injuries after a fire aboard a nuclear sub. the fire broke out yesterday, but it's been burning all night at the naval shipyard. the fire was just put out a few hours ago. the reactor aboard the sub wasn't operating at the time of the fire and it wasn't affected. there is hope in the progress of nuclear talks with iran today. the talks were supposed to end on wednesday, but a stalemate led to diplomats agreeing to meet again. the extension could mean a change in tone of negotiations.

the talks are between iran's top nuclear negotiator and diplomats from the u.s. as well as five other countries. 6:47 right now. we check in with meteorologist christina loren. looks like today might not be too bad, but there might be a little rain in the birthday celebration for the golden gate bridge. >> actually, i think we'll be cleared out just in time for that. we've got rain for friday, but who cares, it's friday. it's going to be friday, right? we're finally to thursday. and today, we had a pretty good-looking week. today cooler than it was yesterday by about ten degrees, but starting out with a beautiful shot here over the south bay, san jose getting a lot of sunshine early. and temperatures are going to end up rather comfortable later on this afternoon. still a little bit cool out there. as you can see right now, though, we do have a little bit of haze. happy to report, good air quality across the bay area. every single county. 49 degrees to start you out in livermore. good morning, 49 in sunnyvale and 51 degrees in san mateo. winds are going to be a factor. right now they have calmed down substantially. we do have a little bit of fog forming at the north end of the

peninsula. but it won't last long as we have area of low pressure on the way. this is going to mix up that atmosphere, increasing the winds throughout the afternoon and the clouds will increase as we head through this evening and tonight. showers on the way. as we meet back here tomorrow morning, you want to go ahead and already give yourself a little extra time for tomorrow morning's commute. your future cast describes the story. very clearly here, we stop that clock for you at 10:00 p.m. tonight, starting to get mostly cloudy conditions. stop that clock again for you at 8:00 a.m., have some light showers creeping up from the south at that point over the santa cruz mountains and then 2:00 p.m. starts to get rather active. as you make your way home from work, yeah, probably a slow commute home from livermore to concord up through napa. but the good news is, we've got a big holiday weekend shaping up, and the weather is going to clear out just in time for that by 3:00 a.m. saturday getting a nice clear start over the greater bay area. highs today will be in the 70s. like i said before, though, not as warm as it was yesterday. not too bad, though, 72 degrees is room temperature.

first, though, it's all about a high-price private fund raising breakfast here at the fairmont hotel in downtown san jose, very heavily secured this morning. that breakfast is scheduled to start at 8:30. i can tell you about 20 people paying $36,000 a plate this morning that adds up to about $700,000 for the campaign. he drew the likes of actor don chooet l and power players including the founder of pandora raking in more than $2 million there, then mr. obama took to the stage inside the fox theater in redwood city. he spoke on jobs, education, immigration, and the future. >> we move forward together as one nation and as one people. and that's the true lesson of our past. that's the right vision for our future. that's why i'm running again for president of the united states of america.

"today in the bay's" christie smith is live in san jose where antolin garcia-torres will have formal charges read to him today. christie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, jon. in just a few hours, he'll make his first court appearance since being arrested on monday. as you said, what will happen is that the judge will read the formal charges against him and prosecutors have said they believe they have enough evidence for a conviction and to send him to prison though there is no body or weapon. the 21-year-old is being held without bail. the santa clara county sheriff said the detectives had gathered direct and circumstantial evidence showing he killed

15-year-old sierra lamar who disappeared on march 16th. the d.a. says details of the exact charges will become clearer today as more facts are laid out. but we also spoke with a legal analyst who says that the case may be tough to prove without a body. >> the defendant may say he dropped sierra lamar off after the kidnapping and he has no idea what happened to her after that. that's why this forensic evidence is key. >> reporter: now, he went on to say if the dna evidence inside the red jetta that investigators say belonged to garcia-torres shows proof of trauma, well, then prosecutors would have a stronger case in the absence of a body. the d.a. could go after the death penalty or drop the murder charges until he gets more evidence. reporting live in san jose, christie smith, "today in the bay." we can also tell you a special dive team will search a reservoir today for any trace of sierra lamar. the team is using advanced sonar equipment to search the waters

at the reservoir south of lamar's hometown of morgan hill. the sheriff department says the search will also expand to other south bay waterways throughout the entire week. for updates any time on the search and investigation into sierra lamar's murder, log on to our website, nbcbayarea.com, key words sierra lamar. 6:55, a passenger on the united flight from new jersey to southern california was arrested after the flight landed in los angeles. police were called to the plane after a passenger caused a disturbance last night. they took that passenger into custody, but has not said much else about the incident. so far, as well, no word on any charges. but it does not appear that anyone was hurt in that incident. a ban on open ocean racing will be lifted today. the coast guard had put into effect back in april after the tragedy involving the low-speed chase off the islands. five sailors died when they were swept overboard. the agency will also set up an offshore racing council and

place a set of new rules. one proposal is to require sailors to be tethered to racing boats for added safety. a safeway clerk will be allowed to return to work after being suspended for defending a pregnant woman. young was suspended without pay for about a month after he broke up a domestic dispute. young says he hit a customer who he says he saw the man beating his pregnant girlfriend or associate near the meat counter in late april. safeway at this point giving young his job back plus back pay and any benefits. 6:56. hoping to close the achievement gap the palo alto school board has adopted new graduation requirements. board members voted to implement the sort of a-g curriculum used by san jose unified and san francisco unified. that curriculum meets the criteria. the new requirements will increase the number of units needed to graduate from high

school by ten to 220. here's a strange story. harvard alumni attending their 50th class reunion getting an unexpected update from one of their class mates. the unibomber, remember ted kaczynski. he graduated in 1962 and serving a life sentence for going on that deadly bombing spree between 1978 and 1995. get this, an alumni directory handed out during that reunion, kaczynski is listed there. he's listing his occupation as prisoner and under awards he lists eight life sentences. the alumni association says it definitely regrets this major error. 6:57, a cruiseship passenger can thank social media for turning an apparent theft into entertainment of sorts. a woman lost her iphone while aboard a disney liner back in april. but apple's icloud at uploads pictures automatically. so she started getting the

pictures taken by the thief. she posted the pictures on facebook and sent them to disney. and the company says it's working to fix the problem and has placed the employee on administrative leave. well, the blog "the hill" meantime says congress may soon begin hearings into the facebook botched ipo. scott mcgrew with the latest. >> both the house and senate talking about congressional hearings, not necessarily calling mark zuckerberg to the stand, but more likely officials from the nasdaq and underwriters like morgan stanley to find out what went wrong in the first few hours of the ipo and whether any rules were broken as underwriters revised their estimates. meanwhile, we are looking at hp. hp set the layoff about 27,000 people, 9,000 of them could come in this calendar year. the 27,000 of them, wall street doesn't like it. meg whitman was on cnbc a short time ago defending the size. wall street wanted bigger. take a look.
