morning, i'm marla tellez in for laura garcia-cannon. >> good morning, everybody, i'm jon kelley. and new this morning, we take you to san jose where parts of an office building are damaged after a big-time overnight fire. firefighters just now clearing that scene at saratoga avenue and williams road about a mile north of the west gate mall. and this fire started in the attic of the large two-story building at about 10:30 last night. firefighters had a tough time ventilating this fire because the building has a metal roof on it. nobody was inside at the time, so we're happy to report no injuries have been reported. firefighters say it doesn't look like the fire was intentionally set. so far, no word on the exact cause. well, a murder mystery today in a quiet east bay community. a woman's body found stuffed into a trash can along dublin canyon road. more on the autopsy planned for later on today. christie, good morning. sounds pretty gruesome. >> reporter: it is. it's really awful. good morning to you, marla.

i just got off the phone with the alameda county coroner's office, and they tell me that the autopsy hasn't been done yet and they're not sure exactly when it's going to happen. it may happen today. they say when it is complete that there is a press hold on the information coming out of their office. so any details will have to come from the pleasanton police department after a very disturbing and gruesome discovery yesterday. a body believed to be a woman found inside of a trash can, this was about 11:30 on dublin  canyon road. police say the caller noticed that this was an unusual can, wasn't normally there, just sitting in the shrubs on the side of the road. and it didn't look like the other cans that were normally used in the city. it's unknown how long this can had been in the street. pleasanton police say they're not currently investigating the disappearance of any other women. >> we're reviewing all the flyers that are going out with

descriptions of anyone who has been missing recently. >> police were asked if this might have anything to do with the disappearance of 15-year-old sierra lamar from morgan hill. at this point, though, all they said is it doesn't appear to be the body of a child. but the contra costa times is also reporting that based on decomposition, it's not very likely. police also took five brown bags from the area but didn't say what was inside of those bags. reporting live in pleasanton, christie smith, "today in the bay." speaking of sierra lamar, the prosecution says they are confident they do have enough evidence to convict the suspected individual in the kidnapping and murder of 15-year-old sierra lamar. antolin garcia-torres appearing before a judge on thursday. he did not enter a plea before his brief court appearance. but new information shows sierra was very close to her home when she was kidnapped. there are questions about whether the prosecution can win its case without having a body. santa clara county sheriff lori smith says they are moving

forward whether or not the teenager's body is found. >> it's not critical, but it would help. but more than that, it's important for the family. it's important for us, it's important for closure. >> garcia-torres was officially charged thursday with murder and kidnapping. now the kidnapping charge is considered a special circumstance which makes this case death penalty eligible. garcia-torres currently being held without bail at the santa clara county main jail, and he's due back in court on thursday to enter a plea. 5:04. overseas, he was a soldier. but here at home, he was a son and friend. and now the family of a san jose soldier will spend a somber memorial day honoring a life cut short in the line of duty. he died when a roadside bomb exploded next to his patrol in the district. morgado had been serving in the country since december. it was his first deployment.

more than 100 troops have been killed during fighting in afghanistan so far this year. and happening right now, a fast-moving wildfire still burning out of control this morning. yeah, it's in southern california. we have video to show you here. flames just chewing through 1,200 acres of dry grass and brush in san diego county. right now it's just 5% contained, but we do have some good news to report. the wind right now pushing that fire to a rural area that is a i way from homes in the town of julienne. so the evacuation orders have now been lifted. so far, word of injuries or damage -- no word, that is, of any injuries or damage to any building. this morning, parents in san mateo are worried that cost-cutting moves may endanger their children's lives. moving on to the campus of hillsdale or san mateo high school. the principal of the continuation school say his students deserve an updated

facility closer to where they live. but it's causing a major stir. san mateo's police chief -- some parents and students we talk to are also concerned. >> students don't feel safe walking outside the school if there's construction to their classes or studies or sports, it's obviously very -- it's a scary thing. >> a decision about the move is not expected to be made until the next school year. extra measures being put in place to keep a closer watch on vandals and drug dealers in the east bay. antioch adding 24-hour cameras, seven of them surveillance cameras will be at three recreation spots known as high-crime rates. noll park, and the business park. $225,000 security system will include a monitoring station that will be set up at the police department. >> 5:06. beware of closing bridges this

holiday weekend. the dumbarton bridge is shutting down tonight, and when it opens tuesday morning, it will be more earthquake safe. bob redell live with more on the closure and what it means for the 60,000 drivers who use it every day. that's going to make it tough. good morning, bob. >> yeah, good morning to you, marla. on average about 60,000 vehicles cross the bridge every day. you have business near the peninsula on either side. keep in mind, you'll have that many vehicles displaced, you could see extra traffic out there. the bridge will be shut down between 10:00 tonight, the plan is to have it reopen by 5:00 tuesday morning. it'll be shut down three days, opening time for the morning commute. what they're going to be doing is seismic retro fit. two major components, one at the mid span they're going to be replacing a steal plate that crosses all six lanes and the new plate going in will be seismically correct so that if there were an earthquake they'd have about 18 inches more of

leeway out there. so if there's a shaking, they've got more room. that makes it more earthquake friendly. and also, they're going to be raising the bridge with hydraulic lifts 5 inches so that they could over the next several months install the seismic bearings which, again, will make the bridge safer in case of an earthquake. this is part of a larger seismic retro fit project completed in its entirety by 2013. so, of course, you've got to be asking yourself, how am i supposed to get around this closure? well, thank goodness we have mike inouye to help us answer that. thanks for being out there. we're looking at the closures here at the dumbarton bridge, as well, that's highway 84. that's the first vehicular crossing of the bay area we've had, it's an older form, now we have the new bridge, improving it more, now to the south, highway 84, your alternate is 237 taking you between 880 and

101. traveling the land route. and to the north, you have the san mateo bridge. highway 92. that's an alternate for you. both of those will add about 20 minutes on to your drive time adding mileage to the south or north and back up the peninsula. all right, now, though, we're focusing on the northern alternate because the san mateo bridge has a note from the chp, a wind advisory across the span. and the benicia bridge, no problems, but jon, in the city, there's a lot more going on. i'm tired. can you take this over? >> i'm here to help. and you are exactly right. we can tell you about a key artery in san francisco also shutting down for construction today. specifically 1st street between mission and howard streets. crews will close it from 8:00 p.m. tonight running all the way until 5:00 a.m. on tuesday. contractors there installing a temporary bridge to allow underground digging to continue at the transbay terminal project. and you know what, jon, that's not the only place in the city where you're in for a

traffic headache. unfortunately, it's probably a good idea to grab a bike or lace up your running shoes if you take light rail or the bus. you'll need a new plan to get around town. starting at 7:00 tonight, muni is shutting down several key rounds for an 11-day stretch. buses will run in place of trains on the line between ocean beach and vennice avenues. muni says the construction will make tracks smoother and service more reliable. otherwise impacted by this construction, the 22-fillmore, 37--corbett and the n-owl routes. >> a lot going on. and if that wasn't enough. there's another event tieing up the city. this one's going to be a party. in hours, the golden gate bridge will kick off the birthday bash, and look at the bridge right now, gorgeous. starting at 10:00, ed lee and nancy pelosi will be onhand for a ribbon-cutting ceremony for

"today in the bay's" christie smith is live at that scene. christie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. absolutely they're shaken up. we're hearing that the autopsy may happen today.

but i spoke with the coroner's office this morning and they're telling me even when it's complete that there is a press hold on this case meaning that they won't be releasing information. it'll come from where we are here at the pleasanton police department after a very gruesome discovery late yesterday morning. a decomposed body found in a trash can on dublin canyon road near the stone ridge mall if you know the area. a caller reported a can that seemed out of place in some shrubs and looked different than the other cans that are normally issued by the city. police immediately taped off the area and searched for drews. investigators believe the body is a woman, the age and race, though, is unknown. the swarm of activity quite a shock for neighbors. >> this is the most action i've seen on the property for a long time. >> reporter: pleasanton police say they are not looking into the disappearance of any women, but they are working with other agencies who do. investigators were asked early on if this might be linked at all to the disappearance of

15-year-old sierra lamar from morgan hill. they say it does not appear to be the body of a child. also the contra costa times reporting that it doesn't seem likely that it's linked to that case at this point. that's the latest from here, reporting live in pleasanton, i'm christie smith, "today in the bay." 5:32, today is national missing children's day. it's a day named for the young boy who was the first missing child to be featured on the side of a milk carton. and now 33 years to that day that he went missing, there is an arrest in this case. 51-year-old pedro hernandez tells investigators he lured 6-year-old etan into a convenience store before choking him and throwing his body into the trash. officers say so far hernandez has not offered a motive. there's no physical evidence, but hernandez has signed a detailed confession. hernandez is expected in court this afternoon. and in the bay area, a castro valley family is also honoring their missing daughter

today. 14-year-old jenny lin was murdered at her home in castro valley 18 years ago back in may of '94. no murder suspects have ever been charged in her killing. her family's holding a ceremony and candle light vigil in memory of her. that ceremony begins tonight at the castro valley library. breaking her silence. this morning the wife of ross mirkarimi coming forward to talk about the ordeal she says has simply ripped her family apart. >> he's paying the price in money, he's paying the price in his family. he's paying a lot. >> ileana lopez speaking about her husband ross mirkarimi during an interview down in miami, florida. mirkarimi has been suspended by the mayor while the ethics committee considers official misconduct charges. mirkarimi pleading guilty to a misdemeanor after being charged with bruising his wife's arm during an argument.

lopez and her son theo have been staying with her family in venezuela to escape the media glare surrounding this case. the vice mayor of a bay-area town is facing embezzlement charges. joseph medrano is accused of embezzling $159,000 from a peninsula insurance client. he is scheduled to be arraigned next month. now, if convicted, he faces five years in state prison. prosecutors say medrano collected this money from the client but did not forward it to his parent company as required. he tells the "contra costa times," i am not guilty. i have nothing to hide. north bay police officers will be on the job today to make sure tragedy does not repeat itself. novato police holding a dui check point today in honor of a 9-year-old girl killed three years ago by a drunken motorcyclist on san marin drive of that crash. and police have not yet released

the time or location of today's check point. now that check point will be one of many to be held throughout the bay area this weekend. the chp and local law enforcement planning extra patrols to curb drunk driving over this holiday weekend. well, choose your bridge carefully this holiday weekend. the dumbarton bridge shuts down tonight for earthquake safety upgrades. bob redell live with more on the 77-hour closure. what are folks going to do, bob? >> well, we'll have mike there to tell us what the alternate routes are. but basically you're not going to be able to use the bridge between 10:00 tonight and 5:00 tuesday morning, marla because they will be shutting it down for the seismic retro fit work. most of the work will be taking on this mid span that we're about to approach right now. and going to be primarily two things taking place. one, they're going to be adding a seismic steel plate that goes across all six lanes. and basically with this new plate, if there's an earthquake,

the bridge will now have about 18 inches of movement leeway. second thing, and this is more of an engineering thing more than anything else, the construction workers will be lifting the bridge with hydraulic jack 5 inches so they have that space underneath to install some seismic ball bearing joints. this is to help the bridge in case there's an earthquake. it helps to deal with the movement there. this is part of a greater seismic retro fit project that will be completed in 2013. now on each day there's an average 61,000 vehicles to be precise that cross the dumbarton bridge. you can imagine if you have that many people displaced not being able to use this bridge on either sides in menlo park and in fremont, you're going to have more traffic. that's why they're trying to get the word out now. avoid these areas or at least plan ahead. mike inouye will have more on that. mike, on some alternate routes. it is quite windy out here this

morning. so if this is part of the commute, just watch yourself as you're driving across. mike, those alternate routes for the closure, what do you suggest for this weekend? >> there are not a whole lot of alternates as you know when you're traveling over the water. and thank you for that update. we're looking at the dumbo closing at 10:00 p.m., highway 4 over to the menlo and east palo alto sides of the bridge. that is cut off and so your alternates, you have two to choose from really. the 237 route, that's the land route a little further south from over to sunnyvale. that freeway, that highway should be moving smoothly, but that'll add about 20 minutes on to your travel time. as well as will the northbound route, which is the san mateo bridge. highway 92. bob told you things are a little windy. chp had issued a wind advisory. they lifted the advisory, but as bob said, there's still gusty winds. obviously that is the case because christina you are the meteorologist and you've told us

that the winds have changed. >> you know after living here your whole life it doesn't take that much wind over your open water bridges to catch you offguard. you want to hold on to your steering wheel this morning and you can see from the live look over the golden gate bridge, this camera is holding rather steady, be uh the winds are picking up and calming down. let's get right to your wind speeds this morning. sustained at 15 miles per hour, rather strong in santa rosa this morning, 11 miles per hour in san francisco, and we're at 23 miles per hour in oakland. so as you can see, the sustained winds are rather strong, we're getting gusts up to 45 miles per hour from time to time. you want to keep that in mind. the slick conditions have not yet arrived. but this front is continually pushing south as we speak, now getting some showers over bodega bay. but as i zoom in, you can see the greater bay area is fine for now. 68 degrees at 4:00 p.m. inland. your full forecast to help you make those weekend plans is coming up next. right now, back to you guys. >> thank you very much.

new evidence may link charles manson and his followers to a number of unsolved murders. the l.a. police department wants to listen to about eight hours of audio recordings between attorney bill boise and his former client charles wattson. these tapes were found accidentally at the firm that was bankrupt that was holding them. watson's discussing unsolved murders committed by followers. watson himself is a former member of that family and is now serving a life sentence for his involvement in the killing of actress sharon tate. 12 boxes containing the bodies of 12 soldiers killed during the korean war were returned to their homeland today. a u.s. excavation team recovered the remains of 226 soldiers between 2000 and 2004 in north korea during a joint u.s./north korea recovery mission. the remains are the first such repatriation of south korean soldiers by the united states since the 1953 agreement.

also today, more fallout from pakistan's controversial decision to jail the doctor who helped track down osama bin laden. tracie potts joins us now live on capitol hill this morning where lawmakers could decide to slash about $1 million in aid each and every year. as for that doctor, he remains behind bars. good morning. >> good morning. and the u.s. not happy about the fact he was given 33 years for treason for collecting dna in and around the compound where osama bin laden was found and eventually killed. he helped the cia track down bin laden, but now is behind bars. he did nothing wrong. says secretary of state hillary clinton. the u.s., the senate has voted to cut $33 million in aid as a result. which is really just a drop in the bucket. but there are other tensions between these two countries. they have decided pakistan has to cut supply lines after the u.s. killed two dozen pakistani soldiers in a raid last year. the head of the ruling party

says the u.s. should apologize. >> i'd like the american public to consider what their reaction would have been had 24 american soldiers been killed in such a way on the border with mexico. i think an apology would be appropriate. >> they're also upset about drone attacks trying to track down militants there. jon? >> tracie potts, thank you very much from washington, d.c. well, france's new president francois hollande is in afghanistan this morning there to meet with french soldiers and talk about early plans for a withdrawal. he announces plans to pull out troops at a nato summit earlier this week. he says they'll be out of afghanistan at the end of the year instead of next year as former president nicholas sarkozy had planned. well, another vote of support for same-sex marriage. a federal judge in oakland striking down a provision of the defense of marriage act as unconstitutional. the 1996 law passed by congress defines marriage as the union

between a man and a woman. and it denies government benefits to same-sex couples. thursday's decision is in response to a lawsuit filed against calpers by same-sex couples refusing to -- the uss iowa will begin the final trek to southern california on saturday. it was supposed to leave last weekend but was delayed because of bad weather. it's scheduled to leave at 11:00 tomorrow morning and expected to pass under the golden gate bridge by 3:00 in the afternoon. when "iowa" gets to los angeles, it'll be transformed into a naval museum. >> interesting stuff there. 5:45 right now, let's get the full forecast. christina loren talking about friday and a long holiday weekend ahead of us. >> yeah. that's a spectacular ship. i don't know if you've had a chance to see it. you still have an opportunity to. it's going to leave tomorrow.

and you know, we've got a lot happening here. over the course of memorial day weekend, as you may know, it's the unofficial kickoff to summer. we've had a lot of congratulations happening in addition to the celebration of this beauty. the golden gate bridge, 75 years as of this sunday. as you can see right now, we are starting to cloud up quite a bit and we're actually picking up showers on the radar. winds are certainly picking up, as well. we have a sustained wind speed at 23 miles per hour in oakland. and as you can see right now, light showers up through sonoma county. throughout the day today, the showers will intensify. between the hours of 12:00 and 5:00, we're expecting the moisture to come through. an area of low pressure, the actual core is going to track right over the bay area. this is going to bring in quite a bit of instability. enough for some strong thunderstorms to develop. we're expecting isolated thunderstorms and associated with these thunderstorms, you could find brief heavy downpours and it could become a problem as you commute home. i'll be here watching those

thunderstorms closely in the nbc bay area weather center all day long. as weed head through this weekend, we're going to get better weather. san jose getting light showers at about 10:00 a.m., stop that clock again at 3:00. getting pretty heavy showers over the east shore, concord, antioch, even livermore, but by 12:00 midnight, things start to clear up and we get a nice day. saturday, sunday, even monday looking fantastic for outdoor plans. today is the only day you want to stay indoors if you can. that's it in san jose, 72 tomorrow, and 78 by sunday. let's check your drive, here he is, mike inouye. >> all right. we were following this closure for eastbound highway 4 through antioch. that should've cleared. the crews reported clearing a few minutes ago. give you time for sensors to open up again. mild slowing, it's friday. over toward somersville, down 242 in concord, that volume is building. we had an earlier wind advisory for the benicia bridge over here

canceled by chp. the winds could be an issue as you're crossing the open water bridges. a live shot toward the bay bridge toll plaza. not so many as we typically see backing up. not so bad is 5:48 right now and a smooth drive down the east shore freeway and heading toward the toll plaza and over the water. and we'll look at livermore, 580, mild slowing, a 15-minute drive, they tacked on just at minute, a little bit below 60 miles per hour throughout the area. 680 through sunol and in through the south bay moving very smoothly right now. easy drive for the northbound routes. we do have the construction zone around capitol and story, that's cleared. a new incident reported 880 at 101. i'll get details on that. it may be blocking one of your fast lanes. no major slowing just yet on 101 for that section. and a nice drive up through menlo park, 101 passing 84.

that's the dumbarton bridge. that bridge closes tonight at 10:00 p.m. won't reopen until tuesday at 5:00 a.m. and this one's a very cool story. some los angeles middle school students this summer taking a trip of a lifetime. ♪ >> oh, yeah, that's kind of cool there. their musical skills adds bell ringers earning them a performance in the 2012 olympic games in london. yeah, these kids are from the mark twain middle school and will be part of those opening ceremoesor f ringing those bells. the students excited about the trip. >> we're going. >> i'm excited. we all are. we can't wait. it's going to be fun. >> any time you hear a young lady shriek, that's a good thing. mark twain middle school will be some of the youngest ever to perform in the opening ceremonies. >> she got a little groove to her too.

talk about that coming up. it's 5:52. some good news/bad news. the good news, most of the country will be getting a break on gas prices this memorial day weekend. the bad news, it's not going to happen here in california. here's the issue. several california refineries are shut downright now for maintenance. and there aren't many refineries outside california that make the state's clean burning gasoline. so you, all of us, will have to pay more. the average price of a gallon of regular is $4.31, that's down about 5 cents from last week, but it's still 9 cents higher than it was during memorial day weekend back in 2008. well, scott mcgrew joins us with an update on the space x capsule's attempt to dock at the international space station. we're hearing there may be a problem. >> we're not precisely sure what it is. but space x has been asked to hold 30 meters a uh way from the space station or roughly a third of a football field. as you look at live pictures of nasa's control center, space x

has its own control center, as well. now, they've gotten within 30 meters before they were asked to hold. they've been ever so carefully creeping closer and closer to the space station. are these live pictures here? so we are seeing space x "dragon" capsule. now originally it had the solar panels, you may be seeing it at a funny angle where we no longer see the solar panels. it's much closer than it appears. it's so hard to get any sort of relative distance, about 30 meters as we said. but we will continue to monitor that. in the meantime, let's talk about gadget friday. this may look vaguely familiar. does this look vaguely familiar? >> yes, i've seen that. that looks jumbo. >> yeah, the jam box, right? this is what they're calling and they came up with this great title, the big jam box. >> makes sense. >> it's from jawbone. it's a wireless speaker, and i've got a lap full of gadgets here. let me -- hold on, i'm going to play one that doesn't have swear
