good morning. coming up on "today in the bay". >> one of the world's most famous landmarks turns 75 years old. that story is coming up. if you are planning to head into san francisco in no strike to work about. we had the latest on golden gate ferry service after workers walked the picket line yesterday. plus a sky diver's nightmare jump. a grandma nearly falls out of her harness, how her heartstopping ordeal ended. this is "today in the bay."

and there she is on her 75th birthday. it is the golden gate bridge. we are celebrating all morning long. everything you need to know about getting into and around the city. thanks for joining us. i'm kris sanchez, along with rob mayeda. at least we can see it. sometimes we can't. >> international orange helps. but looking outstanding. speaking of the golden gate bridge. during the day we'll have some clearing skies. i think through about lunchtime we're going to hang onto the low clouds, and if you're heading out there, a jacket will be perfect today. now, we do have a fiveworks show after 9:00 tonight. notice patchy low clouds, overall, i think that follow will probably hold off. so quickly hour by hour, notice or inland areas today. it will be a cool day again.

summer is making a big-time comeback. we'll have the full forecast in a few minutes. >> it is the unofficial start to summer. >> that's true. the golden gate ferry workers will be back at work in time for today's 75ths anniversary. the terminal workers staged a one-day strike yesterday catches riders rather off-guard. union workers set up pickets at the larkspur terminal. the workers say they will be back on work this morning and the ferry service will be able to handle all of the large crowds. hundreds of thousands of people are flocking to the waterfrond to celebrate the golden gate bridge turning 75. bob redell is at chrissy field. you look a little lonely out there right now. that won't be the case later on. >> reporter: things are going to kick off in about four hours,

11:00 a.m., and culminate with a huge fireworks show. if you're going to be coming down here, best place for views is between the bridge and ft. mason. mickey hart will take center stage with his band and will be playing a 23-foot-long stainless steel wind harp/guitar in the shape of the golden gate bridge. you can see a lot going on beforehand. starting at 11:00 this morning, there's senior exhibits set up at chrissy field and marriagea green. there will be a maritime display of historic watercraft, vehicles over the last 75 years, and the bridge history tent. where they have a lot of arty facts. right here this device is called a sky box. if you can imagine these two

halves, and what you have is painters who will sit in here, have the ropes in front, and they can go up and down to paint the ropes. international orange was actually an accidental color when this steel was calming in from pennsylvania. it was covered in a red lead primer coat, and one of the architects saw that and was inspired to come up with the color. it's called international orange, and sherwin-williams, they called it golden gate bridge orange, but the proper name is international orange. it's not proprietary. if you want to paint yew house in international orange, you can go online, get the formula, and they'll mix it up for you. go to goldengatebridge.org for more. reporting from chrissy field,

behind bars and police are searching for a third after officers say shots were fired at them. this happened at 1:30 yesterday morning in san bruin on near fourth. they were trying to stop a car when they say three men ditched the car. the police chased the men. officers say one of the them turned and fired shots. the officers were not injured, but they did fire back and they say they don't know whether that suspect was hit. much more ahead on "today in the bay." coming up embarrassment at the vatican, the pope's personal butler is under arrest. plus more excitement than she bargained for. things go very wrong for a grandma during her first skydiving jump. all ded, and k the instructor. they believe he passed information on to the press, including to an investigative reporter who published a book last week on the topic. in that book are copies of private letters alleging corruption with the top cardi l cardinal. carl anderson, an american-born vatican member, says it's hard to believe. >> well, it's really incredible. if you wrote this in fiction, you wouldn't believe it. no editor would let you put it in a novel. so it's something that i find very unbelievable. >> some experts say the leaked documents have been to be the work of more than one person and the butler is being used as a scapegoat. if convicted, that butler faces up to 30 years in prison. still more ahead on "today in the bay" coming up holding on for dear life.

the assignment of a lifetime, and you couldn't see anything beneath him. rob mayeda knows whether that would be the case again today. >> it looks like this morning the because of the cloud is above the top of the tower, so maybe a better view. but we do have drizzle outside. 50s across the board for our inland valleys, and some 40s around santa rosa, napa, and notice the winds, still a healthy onshore wind. when the winds are like that, we're not going to warm up a whole lot today. should see some 70s inland. yesterday we had some thunderstorms in the north bay, snow in the sierra. so the showers will not be an issue today, but the low clouds and drizzle will be until around about lunchtime. dryer air mixes on in, so from 1:00 through about 7:00 we'll have the clearing, but here

comes the low clouds again right after the fireworks, 11:00 the low clouds will surge back in. tomorrow morning plan on more drizzle and mist for your morning drive. temperatures around the bay area today should see some low 70s, mainly south of san jose, but it looks like upper 60s to near 70 for most of our inland locations. no 80s on the map today. mostly cloudy start, partly cloudy finish to the a much for our east bay valleys. around san francisco still lingering low clouds, but i think after lunchtime we should start to see the sun break through. three-day forecast 'with his wrap up memorial day weekend, tomorrow looks warmer. watch what happens here wednesday and thursday. we could see a light offshore wind pattern. very likely by thursday and

friday. you can see here with the golden gate bridge forecast, we'll be looking at mostly cloudy skies, then partly cloudy conditions later on. the temperatures already close to 60, and around fireworks time, what we should see is low cloud cover, but hopefully fog free until 11:00. cool all day long. you'll want the jackets as skies clear temporarily for the asp and the clouds figure back in tonight. >> hopefully a window to enjoy the fireworks. a sacramento grandmother's pirt day leap could have been the last thing she ever did. she wanted to go sky dives for her 80th birthday, but then she lost her nerve when she was about to jump. and in the process she nearly slipped office harness. her instructor struggled to hang on. he finally pulls the ripcord as

the parachute dough ploys. you'll be amazed to hear what. she's not done. we'll hear from her in about 30 minutes. that just looks surreal. on this 75th anniversary, a trip down memory lay, it was believed the last living golden gate bridge worker died in april, but "today in the bay's" joe rho sato jr. has more. >> reporter: it's a town you pass on the way to somewhere else, but among the 35,000 residents here is one who shares a small role in the building of one of the world's most famous eischens. >> we were going to high school, it was 1935, and we were a bunch of kids. >> gustavo was a student at galileo high school during the

great depression, when one day opportunity came knocking. >> the contractor came around and said, you know, that he needed a bunch of guys to come over and work on some stuff. >> the stuff turned out to be a job working on the new golden gate bridge. >> for two weeks we had just nothing but pulling wire. we picked up stuff, we cleaned up around the place. >> he was 'signed on crew foss installing lights. the job wasn't glamorous and the weather wasn't kind. >> it was always foggy. i wouldn't say too windy, but it was foggy and misrabbit. >> at the end of several weeks was a paycheck. in lean times that meant far more to him than the rising structure. >> all we were thinking about was the money. at that time, 1935, you know, was a critical time for a young

boy 16 or 18 years old. >> there were dozens of contractors and thousands of workers who helped build the bridge, but because social security hadn't yet begun, there are no word records of many of them, so when the golden gate district reported several weeks ago the last worker had died, the family of 96-year-old vuolta spoke up. >> he said to me, well, i'm not dead. we had never thought about it. we had given absolutely no thought to it at all. >> reporter: but he doesn't want his contribution overblown. in fact he was more excited about the building of treasure island for the world's fair. but he does have fond memories of a paycheck and hard times, and remembers exactly how he spent it. >> well, i spent it on girls. yeah. what else can you spend it on? >> joe rho sato jr., nbc bay area news. >> he was 16, 17 years old.

at-risk youths. >> it trouble my soul that people are killing each other, and most don't think there's any other way. and why is that? >> reporter: on top of being a full-time high school teachers, branch created the ever-forward club. the program brings students from four high schools together for mentoring. during the 234-hour event, students are asked to not drink, smoke or use drugs. >> my mission in education is how do we transform that they see education as their ticket to the future. >> the club has 100% graduation rate, 93% of our students are in college. >> reporter: erica apodaca is the first person in her family to go to college. she'll graduate next month from cal state east bay with double bachelors and atmitts she didn't

architecture. they build that in the 1930s, using 1930 technology. each tower there are 600,000 rivets. these bolts had to be hot riveted back in the day, a process we haven't seen in mother-in-law steel construction? year. this gentleman right here, vern mess messler, you're from michigan, and how do they do this back then? >> he area one of the rivets we will be using for the demonstration. >> reporter: you've been to heat it up to how hot? >> about 1900 degrees. >> and a coal -- >> we have a coal forge and propane forge. the coal forge is outstanding. you'll esa lot of smoke and fire. we're going to heat that up to yellow. >> reporter: red is too much? >> red is not quite hot enough. yellow is what you're looking

non-life-threatening injuries. police are looking for suspects in what they believe is a gang-related shooting. this is san jose's 16th homicide of the year. it is an emotional memorial day weekend for loved ones remembering the life of nursing student michel le. she went missing at kaiser permanenti hospital parking lot in hayward. after months of searching, her body was found some pleasanton. asper classmate is charged with her death. that trial starts soon. san mateo will hold its annual memorial day parade, which is dedicating it to troops from the 101st airborne division, beginning from the downtown transit center starting at 11:00. a public party will be held at central park. up ahead, documenting

looking live at the golden gate bridge. anytime friends and family come to visit. this is exactly what they want to see first. luckily today the fog will not be too terrible. one of the people gathering is a man who photographed it. the bridge has been photographed millions of times since it was opened, but no one will be able to imitate the photos of within amateur photographer. we look at his legacy in black and white. >> reporter: every day visitors from across the globe snap

thousands of photos, but back in the days when the bridge was under construction, there was mostly a man named ted huggins. >> he was assigned to photograph the golden gate bridge under construction. >> reporter: in the early '30s he was a salesman and an amateur photographer who worked for -- he realized the bridge district didn't have a budget for a photographer, so he offered his services. >> he came out night and day, at all times, and photographed the bridge from a caisson under water to a blimp up above. >> reporter: she says her father photographed the bridge for 3 1/2 years, from every angle, braving the same heights as the work respect. he images graced newsletters, newspapers and magazines,

including the may 1937 cover 6 "life." >> he was ability to beat out a number to capture the prize cover page. >> reporter: the imaging helped build excite for the new structure. they also told the story of the times. >> they conveyed the resilience of the american workers and this region during one of the worth possible economic times the country had faced. >> reporter: >> reporter: it opened in 1937 with a public walk, and his family was in the crowd. >> i don't know if i was in a stroller or what, but people have told me that i was the first child to cross. >> reporter: ted huggins desired in 1989 at the age of 97, but the time stood still for the young bridge. >> he took hundreds, thousands of pictures. he loved the bridge.

know is how much did he bring in? >> just a few bucks. this time only about $6 million in about 18 hours. mind you, that's in addition to the $21 million that he picked up just two weeks earlier when he was in southern california. by the way, he wasn't alone. mitt romney was trolling the area, as well as john boehner, so they were all here this last week. >> the question always is how important is california to the campaign, and does it buy the state anything? >> well, i'll tell you one thing, in a word it's very important. this state is like a stretch trove. california has something like 12% of the national population. meanwhile, california has provided about 25% of the campaign cash he haus recommended. given california's very, very

blue color, we are blue, when it comes to our politics here, it doesn't play the same kind of thing for romney. still romney has managed to collect about 10% of his campaign war chess right here. what does it get us? maybe it gets them a lot of money to go other places to make their case. that's what it's about. we are a printing press for these candidates. >> so basically we help them win in other places. so let's talk about the independence expenditures committee, and of course the pac money as well. what kind of money are we talking about? >> incredulous, a mammoth amount just from four years ago, we're talking about huge changes. all of this, by the way, thanks to that incredibly important citizens united decision that came down from the supreme court a couple years ago. because of that decision, corporations, unions, individuals, anyone can spend an

unlimited amount money on campaigns, as long as they do it in a couple selected ways, and you put all the monies together, so far all the candies and their surrogates for the democrats, $550 million for the republicans $450 million. so together a billion, a billion dollars that have been raised so far. it's only may, and we have a long way to go. >> what's the danger from all of this money? of course there's always concern about how this plays out in terms of influence. >> yeah, yeah. we're talking about a billion total in 2008 to $2ably on, right? your question is a good one. what does it mean to all of us? we're in uncharted territory. there's so much money awash, we just don't know. some individuals in isolated cases have promised to write checks for $100 million, from a

single individual. more than one case of that. that's more than the candidates can raise, you talk about $6 million here or $21 million -- or the parties can raise. these are influential individuals, so we don't know how the dynamic will play out? one thing is for sure, no matter how you look at it, this would be the most expensive campaign in history. it will be interesting to see how it sorts out. >> i think it will sort out with a lot of time on our dvrs and stuff in our mailboxes. you can always get more anytime nbc bay area prop zero is his blog. a sky-diving grandma get more than she bargains for.
