good morning, everybody. it's just about 4:31 in the morning. >> and a whole lot to get to on this memorial day. let's start off with a check of that forecast. good morning. >> good morning. we are going to get some gorgeous weather as we pay tribute to our servicemen and women today. and any sort of outdoor activities you normally associate with memorial day you'll be able to do comfortably. right now, it's a little bit on the mild side. cool up in santa rosa, 47 degrees, we're at 55 here in san jose. as you head throughout this afternoon, we will see those clouds break apart and the sunshine through, but we're expecting a mostly cloudy start. the temperatures today, close to 80 degrees. your full forecast, we'll talk about the beach weather coming up. 4:31, i'm going to send it back to you guys. >> we showed a shot of it at the top of the show. as the golden gate bridge celebrates the anniversary, another bay area bridge is in the spotlight for a different reason. >> safety concerns about the new span of the bay bridge.

bob redell live with details of a potential construction flaw. bob, that can't be good. >> well, good morning to you, marla and jon. any time you're building a bridge, you have to use a lot of concrete, especially for the foundation and the pilings in the water. and workers are supposed to be testing that concrete as they poor it for the most part. but in one instance, they tested a 19-foot section of concrete that's in the foundation that supports the main tower of the new bay bridge. and they tested this concrete before it had a chance to harden. and now it's too late to perform that said test raising questions about whether that concrete cured properly. this is according to caltrans own records provided to and reported by the sacramento bee. the bee also found several errors in the testing of concrete in other parts of the bridge. caltrans says the bridge is safe and seismically sound in spite of these reports. >> bottom line, we are extremely

confident with the quality of the foundation of the new bay bridge. we see no issues respect to that foundation. we'll be prepared to develop a point-by-point response to what was put forth. >> reporter: this bridge is costing the state $6.5 billion making it the most expensive public works project in california history slated to open next year, labor day weekend. reporting live, nbc bay area news. and keeping with our bridge theme, work continues around the clock on the dumbarton bridge. today marking the third day it's been closed to allow caltrans to install a steal plate. this will allow the bridge to move during an earthquake. >> so replacing the original with a new extended, that gives the deck an additional 18 inches of movement in a seismic event. >> officials say they'll have a better idea later today of when the bridge will reopen to

traffic. the plan is now to have the bridge open in time for the morning commute bright and early tomorrow. of course the bridge everybody was talking about was the golden gate bridge, which celebrated its 75th anniversary this weekend. thousands attending the festivities, which were crowned last night by an incredible fireworks show. more on the weekend highlights coming up in about ten minutes from now. the bay area community is showing their support for the family of murdered nursing student michelle lei. a vigil was held sunday marking one year from her disappearance. balloons with notes written to her were released. the family of missing morgan hill teen sierra lamar also attended this event. lei was a nursing student and last seen leaving class at a hayward hospital. her body was found four months later in pleasanton. >> it's a reminder that it can be anyone's daughter, anyone's sister that can be taken the next day and not to take your loved one for granted. >> a former high school

classmate has been charged with lei's death. the 28-year-old pleaded not guilty. her trial is scheduled for september 17th, which is exactly one year from when lei's body was found. san jose police are investigating a double shooting that left a 16-year-old boy dead. it happened around midnight sunday morning at a home near the interchange of 101 and 680. police say they found two people with gun shot wounds. the teenager died at the scene. a 23-year-old maintain to the hospital and he is expected to survive. police have not made any arrests, but say the shooting appears to be gang-related. new this morning, at least 24 more people are dead after a central syrian city was hit by artillery overnight. this brings the death toll to well over 100 after a violent weekend in that country. activists blaming government troops. this amateur video we have to show shows protesters filling the streets across syria on sunday after a massacre on saturday that killed at least 90 people.

now we can tell you this video has not been independently verified by nbc. u.n. observers say it involved the use of artillery shells which only government forces have. >> so the evidence is clear. not murky. and there is a clear footprint of the government in this massacre. we condemn, of course, this action as a flagrant violation of the resolutions -- >> syria's representative to the u.n. lashing out calling these observations lies. syria's government denies any involvement in the killing. >> on this day, president obama will lay a wreath on the tomb of the unknowns. one war in what appears to be the end of another. tracie potts reports from capitol hill. >> reporter: rolling thunder invades washington, hundreds of thousands of bikers remembering their fallen colleagues from vietnam.

>> i have 17 brothers on the wall. and this is the best way to honor their memory. >> reporter: but 50 years later, they also mourn those lost and captured in afghanistan. bo has been a p.o.w. there for three years. >> you are not forgotten. and so help me god, you will come home. we will not leave you behind. >> reporter: thunderstorms cut short this weekend's memorial day concert featuring "american idol" finalist jessica sanchez. today with flags on every grave at arlington cemetery, president obama will place a wreath at the tomb of the unknown and visit the vietnam memorial. >> not just to remember them on memorial day -- >> reporter: his pullout from afghanistan scheduled for 2014 continues to draw criticism this memorial day. >> the entire region believes that the united states of america is withdrawing. they have to live in the

neighborhood, and they are making the accommodations and that's not good for america. >> mccain joins mitt romney at a veterans event in california today. both candidates are vying for support from veterans and military families. >> reporter: our own "wall street journal" poll shows mitt romney with an eight-point edge among military voters. but a poll shows just the opposite, president obama leading with a lot of those voters in battleground states. from washington, i'm tracie potts, nbc news. well, veterans are gathering in san francisco this morning to take part in a very special cross-country journey. soldiers from the iraq and afghanistan wars along with other athletes will take part in the sea to shining sea bike ride. a way to honor troops and the american spirit. they will leave chrissy field today with a trek that will end on a virginia beach. now on this memorial day, a tribute to victims of the 9/11

attacks. a remembrance event will be held this afternoon on the flight 93 memorial site at union city. the names will be read up to 40 victims considered to be heroes killed trying to stop the hijackers. people at stanford hospital will receive special honor this memorial day. as of today, all patients and employees who identify themselves as u.s. veterans will be given this. a red, white, and blue wristband. the idea is the wristbands will publicly identify veterans, giving a people a chance to stay thank you and encourage conversations between patients and visitors also their service. a stanford hospital employee came up with this idea. it is 4:39 right now. as we honor the people fallen in these wars across this country, let's check in to find out what kind of weather. >> yeah, my grandfather fought in two wars. today is significant just about to every single american. and as you pay tribute today, we're going to get spoiled with

welcome back, everybody, on this monday morning. and look at that shot. you've got to love the way the fog lights things up out there. kind of seems like a christmas festive shot with the different glowing lights. that is kind of the minor fireworks show compared to what we had last night over in san francisco. celebration for the 70th anniversary of that golden gate bridge ended up with a big-time bang. >> spectacular fireworks and laser show lit up the iconic bridge sunday night. george kiriyama has more on the show and the people who braved the cold to watch it. >> reporter: an explosion of colors in the sky above the golden gate bridge did not disappoint the thousands who came out. >> it's the best -- >> live is always better. >> yeah.

personal for some. robert schultz is one of them. he's been driving this piece of history for a long time. this cadillac convertible was the first to cross the golden gate when it opened in 1937. schultz was a baby in his father's arms on the bridge that day and in 1958, he ended up buying the car for $10. now it's part of his family history. >> when i turned 60, i said, dad, i don't feel 60 years old. could there have been a problem on the birth certificate? and he said, you were 1-year-old when they opened that bridge and he said you peed on my jacket when that cadillac went by. >> and here you go. this woman came with this family to honor her late father. his name and memory printed on the back of their shirts. he spent four years building the bridge. she was also here crossing the golden gate with her father at the 50th anniversary and says she'll be here for the 100th. >> all kinds of great memories

there. , this is rare colors from mother nature. and a rare sight for beach goers in south georgia. a double rainbow. how about this? caught on tape as tropical storm beryl churned off that coast. beach goers o out there had a chance to see this weather phenomenon yesterday afternoon. the double rainbow appearing just before the effects of tropical storm beryl could actually be felt. so kind of the beautiful calm before the storm. st. simons is in the general area where the storm made landfall overnight. always love the double rainbow. >> nice and calm comparatively speaking, though. >> yeah, a beautiful, beautiful day to get outdoors and enjoy, pay tribute out there memorial day, great-looking forecast. we are going to start off with a lot of fog and cool conditions. but looks like that sun will be out earlier than yesterday. by about one or two hours, and as a result, temps came up by about 3 or 4 degrees. once the sun came out, we had a really, really nice sunday. we stop the clock at noon,

starting to get some nice clearing at that point, that marine layer will push out in the pacific. and for us with a really good-looking day and then a really, really warm week, i have to put 90 degrees on your seven-day forecast, 90 degrees here in the bay area. stay tuned, i'll let you know when that's expected. i know i have your attention now. 53 degrees at 8:00 a.m. inland, temperatures are going to warm up nicely. by 62 degrees at noon, 74 degrees at 4:00 p.m. a little on the cool side bay side and at the coast today, but still we're going to hit that sunshine, if you wanted to hit the beach. if you do have the day off, you'll be able to do so comfortably. we'll talk about which ones will be the warmest through the next couple of hours. 72 degrees in livermore. by tuesday, 75, take a look at thursday, up to 91 degrees. we've got a really warm end of the week ahead. and we're going to head into this warmth this weekend. tomorrow, you can break out the short sleeves and in jon
