developing news out of vallejo this morning where police are investigating another officer-involved shooting. i'm christie smith. i'll tell you what neighbors heard in a live report. concerns over the quality of some of the concrete in the new bay bridge. i'm bob redell with that story coming up. also the golden gate bridge's 75th anniversary party ending up with a beautiful bang. the big fireworks show coming up. and we've got a good-looking forecast for you to head outdoors and honor our servicemen and women today. temperatures are in the 50s to start. we're headed toward the 70s. your full forecast is moments away. and here's a live look at arlington national cemetery where president obama will be a little bit later for a wreath-laying ceremony at the tomb of the unknowns on this memorial day, monday, may 28th, "today in the bay."

is good morning, thanks for being with us, it is straight up 6:00, i'm marla tellez in for laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm jon kelley. new this morning, dozens of police right now converging on a vallejo street investigating a police shooting. christie smith is live at that scene and has the latest details out there. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, jon. yeah, they're coming and going as still gathering evidence. there are reports that the officer may have been bitten, possibly even by a police dog. that officer had a wound on the leg and was taken to the hospital. vallejo police not saying much about this this morning. there is a wide area of police tape in front of the apartments here on wilson avenue. this is near the water front. it's believed that officers were chasing a suspect in a car possibly a stolen car.

neighbors tell us they heard at least five or six shots. now it's unclear how the suspects are doing at this hour. but here's what one neighbor heard. >> i heard just a vehicle like -- because usually around the neighborhood, they burn the tires and i figured i'd go outside and see what's going on and i see police cars and cars flying down the street. figured i'd come out and see what's going on. >> who were they chasing? did you see a certain car? >> i got told by a friend before i went outside it was like a white little lexus type vehicle. >> now, i spoke with another neighbor just a minute ago before i came on. she told me she saw a man down in the street being worked on by paramedics and heard officers talking about another suspect in a white t-shirt who got away. i did speak with one officer briefly on scene who told me that they are wrapping up the mapping portion of this and should be clear of the scene some time soon. i do have several calls into the vallejo police department.

reporting live in vallejo, christie smith, "today in the bay." san jose police this morning blaming the murder of a 16-year-old on gang violence. that teenager was one of two people shot around midnight at a home on virginia avenue near the interchange of 101 and 680. a small memorial right now growing at the spot where the teen died. responding officers say they found two people wounded. a 23-year-old man who is now hospitalized and that 16-year-old who died at the scene. police have not made any arrests. they say this is the seventh gang-related murder so far this year. it is 6:03. new concern today about a possible construction defect on the new span of the bay bridge. a newspaper investigation finding a potential problem with the section of the concrete foundation. bob redell is live at the bay bridge with the details of this probe. good morning. >> good morning to you, marla. and you can imagine with a project this massive, there is a lot of concrete being poured. and that's one reason why the

workers must test the concrete. well, in one instance, it was a 19-foot section of concrete in the foundation that's used to support the main suspension tower. the test was performed, but it was before that concrete had a chance to harden. the builder allegedly kept quiet about this, now it's too late to perform that test. raising questions about whether that concrete ever cured properly. this is according to cal trans' own records provided to the newspaper. the bee also found several errors in the testing of concrete in other parts of the bridge. caltrans says the bridge is safe, that it's going to be seismically sound, and that they'll be providing a point-by-point response in the coming days. >> across the board, we saw that particular concrete performed very well. we do silver strength tests for the concrete pours that are done out there. >> this new bay bridge is

costing taxpayers $6.5 billion making it the largest public works project in california state history. it's scheduled to be open in just over a year, labor day weekend of 2013. reporting live here at the bay bridge toll plaza, bob redell, "today in the bay." well, from one bridge to the other. right now, work is continuing around the clock on the dumbarton bridge. the span's been closed since friday night while caltrans crews install a steel plate under the deck that will allow the bridge to move in the event of an earthquake. >> so replacing the original, that gives the deck an additional 18 inches of movement in a seismic event. >> they'll have a better idea today when the bridge will reopen to traffic. plans to reopen in time for the tuesday morning commute. speaking of commute, traffic now flowing again across the golden gate bridge this morning now that the big 75th anniversary celebration is over.

you can see it, the bridge becoming a launch pad for fireworks last night. this was a great way to wrap up the all-day celebration. hundreds of thousands of people lining the shore to watch the show and wish the bridge a very happy birthday. >> it's just majestic. i love it. to be honest, i take it for granted too. and it's a beautiful part of the bay area. what else can you ask for? >> and we'll have a lot more on this celebration coming up all morning long including some reflections on the history of the bridge and a view of the fireworks show from the bay. 6:06. veterans are gathering in san francisco today to take part in special cross-country journeys. soldiers from the iraq and afghanistan wars along with other athletes will take part in the sea to shining sea bike ride. it's a way to honor troops and the american spirit. they will leave chrissy field to begin a three-month 3700-mile trek that will end on a beach in virginia. on this memorial day, a

tribute to victims of the 9/11 attacks and observance and remembrance event will be held this afternoon at the flight 93 memorial site. the names will be read to the 40 victims now considered heroes killed trying to stop the hijackers. and we have learned this weekend the widow of flight 93's pilot has died. sandy dahl made it her mission to make sure no one forgot her husband. she said she believed her husband fought alongside passengers that day to keep terrorists from crashing the plane somewhere in washington, d.c. sandy took on a public role after 9/11 speaking on behalf of grieving families. she died in her sleep friday. she was just 52 years old. >> far too young. well, a severe weather system's just wreaking havoc in the south right now. earlier this morning, tropical storm beryl made landfall -- made it to the land on the coast out there in florida. forecasters say there could be

possible flooding. but its effects right now being felt all the way in georgia. sunday, massive trees came tumbling down, some even knocked out power lines and parked cars. that's strong winds ripping it up. we have calm conditions here comparatively speaking. get ready to get those barbecues out. meteorologist christina loren, what's going on? >> yeah, we've got a great-looking day if you have to head to work, we are in that boat with you. but take a look at the good news. here's the good news, nobody else on that roadway with you this morning. you'll have a nice smooth drive. and we actually have a beautiful sunrise over the beautiful bay area. now, what you'll notice here, these clouds are already starting to clear. this is san jose. you can see we start out with a full deck of clouds. the clouds are going to clear earlier than yesterday. as a result, we will be warmer, it's still cool to start. in places like santa rosa, mild here in san jose at 55 degrees, 48 degrees in gilroy. headed toward a really nice day. as you can see here, the clouds

will clear by about noon. we stop the clock on the future cast. starting to see the clouds push out to sea. that sun will come out in full force. if you want to hit the beach, you can do so without having to hide under the low clouds. temperatures are going to be comfortable. between the hours of noon and 4:00, we really get our climb from 66 to 73 degrees. and your hour-by-hour forecast tells the story. 74 degrees as you make your way home from work. and we gave mike the day off for good reason. you just saw from that live camera. no traffic problems, we will let you know if anything develops with double duty in that one, as well. baaing to you guys for now. >> thanks. 6:09, the bay area community is showing their support for the family of murdered nursing student michelle lei. a vigil was held in hayward sunday marking one year since her disappearance. at exactly the same time she was last seen alive, balloons with notes written to her were released. you can see that right here. and the family of missing morgan hill teen sierra lamar also

attended the event. that's her father. the nursing student went missing after leaving classes at a hayward hospital. her body was found four months later in pleasanton. >> serves as a reminder that it can be anyone's daughter, anyone's sister that can be taken. >> a former high school classmate has been charged with lei's death. her trial is scheduled for september 17th, which is exactly one year from when lei's body was found. a special tribute to veterans at stanford hospital this morning. patients and employees who served in the military given a red, white, and blue wristband. the idea here is to publicly identify the vets giving people a chance to say thanks and perhaps encourage some conversations. the stanford hospital employee is the one who came up with this cool idea. 6:10, coming up on "today in the bay," artillery pours into a city after an already violent

so tired its head is kind of in the clouds. actually those are fog clouds there, and i'm sure the hangover is spectacular. it was quite the celebration for the golden gate bridge's 75th anniversary. it is 6:14. well, new this morning, at least 24 more people are dead after artillery hit a central syrian city overnight. and this brings the death toll to well over 100 in a very violent weekend in that country. activists are blaming government troops. this amateur video claims to show protesters filling the streets across the city sunday. the video has not been independently verified by nbc. the u.n. observers say saturday's killings involve the use of artillery. >> the evidence is clear, the evidence is not murky. and there is a clear footprint of the government in this massacre. we condemn, of course, this as a

flagrant violation of the resolutions. >> syria's government denies any involvement. meantime in japan, two american men being held by tokyo authorities in connection with the death of an irish exchange student. the 21-year-old student died in the hotel room. police say the two men, the student and another woman met a concert earlier in the evening. so far, the men have not been charged with murder. a former sanford university president has died. he died of congestive heart failure in palo alto yesterday. he was 88 years old. liman served before serving as stanford's president from 1970 to 1980. he had police come on to that campus back in 1969 after students broke into the main administration building and then vandalized it.

former president and former governor of california ronald reagan may soon have a very special place at california's capital. the state assembly approving the first ever installation of a former governor statue inside the capital building in sacramento. lawmakers say they want to honor reagan because he is the only california governor to ultimately become president. private donations will pay for this construction and maintenance. the state senate still has to approve the measure. it is 6:16. thousands of people celebrated the golden gate bridge's 75th anniversary this weekend. "today in the bay" has the story of a family with a personal bond to that bridge. >> i just bought it because i thought it was a beautiful automobile. i wasn't caring much about the history in those days. >> reporter: but for over 50 years now, robert schultz has been driving a piece of history. this cadillac convertible he calls "mayflower." >> it was carrying the governor in those days and it's held franklin roosevelt in many

parades. >> reporter: it was also the first to cross the golden gate bridge when it opened in 1937. behind the char that day somewhere was baby schultz and his father's arms. ever since the bridge has transcended local history. an imprint now on his family's time line. >> when i turned 60, i said, dad, i don't feel 60 years old. could there have been a problem on the birth certificate? >> he said you were 1-year-old when they opened that bridge. >> and apparently was this car. it was love at first sight. >> and he said, you peed on my tweed jacket when that cadillac went by. >> reporter: he bought the '36 cadillac in 1958. it was a hit at chrissy field where we also saw rosie the riveter and dozens of car classics. >> the car and i are the same age, 76 and still going. well, i was a year old, so the bridge is younger th eer than i. >> he did get scared hanging over the side.

>> reporter: arlene and her family walked miles in honor of her father who helped build the bridge from '33 to '36. he passed away a few years ago. he would have been 100. >> he saw it as a good job. and he brought money homehkno c0 giants up 2-1, buster posey

says i've got one for you too, pal. giants up 3-1. hold on to win it 3-2 and end the two-game skid. in the meantime for the a's, not such a great holiday weekend. hosting the yankees at o.co, the yankees sweep them out, beat them up, win last night 2-0 to sweep that series. meteorologist christina loren joining us onset now to talk about the forecast. we can expect it on this memorial day. >> yeah, we've got a good-looking day. if you wanted to sleep in or just spend the day indoors paying tribute. well, it'll be good for that for the first part of the day. it's cool and cloudy out there. but later on, we are going to get a spectacular finish with highs today pretty close to perfect. you won't need that a.c. won't need the heater. we have good air quality courtesy of the showers that rolled through over last friday. 6:19 now. full deck of clouds over the city of san jose. meanwhile, foggy conditions at the coastline. that's where you will find reduced visibility. you p want to give yourself plenty of time and take it easy.

just a beautiful start. and we're getting a little peek of sunshine here. that's a good sign. we had absolutely no sunshine at this time yesterday. 53 degrees in sunnyvale to start you out. 53 in san francisco, 45 degrees, a cool start for you up in santa rosa and 48 degrees in gilroy. clouds all the way from san jose to san mateo this morning. as we head throughout the day, it all works out like this. fog, low clouds will clear by about noon and the 80s will return to the warmest cities across the bay. warming trend, really kicks into high gear as we head into wednesday and thursday. wednesday, thursday, friday, temperatures close to 90 degrees as high pressure really moves in. this is going to drive that offshore flow. and we see that pattern. it drives the cloud cover out to sea so we don't get the natural coolant off the pacific. the lack of that come lanolant, temperatures are going to hit 80 degrees in san francisco. today the coolest day of the week. 72 degrees in san jose, 72 for livermore, and 65 in san francisco and across the bay bridge in oakland. take you to wednesday, though,

temperatures really starting to get warm around here, 86 inland, translates to 77 degrees. in san francisco, meanwhile, thursday, you will hit 80. and we're talking about 91 degrees right here in san jose. that means easily, easily seeing our first triple digits of the season. but you know what? it's right on time. today is the first official, unofficial, excuse me, start of summer. so we still have about 20 days before we actually hit the start of summer. it's going to feel like it, though, towards the week's end. back to you guys. >> thanks, christina. 6:21. former british prime minister tony blair has just finished testifying into that phone-hacking scandal that's been gripping britain. scott mcgrew has been keeping his eye on that. >> good morning, marla. this special commission was set up to investigate rupert murdoch's news corp. after reporters at some of his newspapers hacked into people's voice mail, including the voice mail of a teenage murder victim, even the leading one of the messages there. blair's been accused of having

too cozy a relationship with the newspaper while he was prime minister. he defended himself point out the same newspapers attacked him, his wife and his children. though the relationship has been close enough that blair's actually godfather to murdoch's daughter grace. david cameron may testify next month. back here at home, no stock market report today as the equities and bonds marks are closed for the memorial day holiday. dow fell 74 more points on friday. and this coming friday, we get the latest job numbers from the labor department. they have really been grim lately. the economy adding just 115,000 jobs in april, the last month measured. unemployment rate unchanged at 8.1%. worse yet, more than 4 out of 10 americans are considered long-term unemployed, 27 weeks or more with no job. also last month, we saw the number in the participation rate go down.

well, if you're planning to spend memorial day at a park, we can tell you there's a lot of great ones in california and right here in the bay area. "today in the bay's" tracie potts is lye on capitol hill with the best of list. sounds like a good time to barbecue, tracie. >> we've got your park score. that's what they call it, the trust for public land ranked the top 40 cities in this country and took a look at not only how many parks they had but how well those parks are serving the public. what they found, the parks in san francisco are number one out of 40. now they look not only at acreage and public space, but they also looked at services. like how many park benches and playgrounds and entrances. they looked at access. how many people can get to a park within a ten-minute walk? and they looked at what you're spending. what they found in the bay area,

smith is live at the scene. >> reporter: good morning. i've been speaking with neighbors all morning, including one woman who told me she heard the sound of tires squealing and then a lot of police cars, sirens, and then gun shots. police still here gathering evidence more than six hours after an apparent officer-involved shooting. there's apartments here on wilson avenue right by the water front if you know the area. there are reports that police were chasing a car that was possibly stolen that they called for help because several other police agencies outside of vallejo responded. and in all the activity, one officer was apparently bitten in the leg by a dog, possibly a police dog. i just spoke with one neighbor who says she hit the floor when she heard all that was going on outside her door. >> i heard a car and then i heard police right behind it. and then i heard shots fired. it sounds like over here. and then they got -- they

apprehended somebody right there. and i guess the guy with the gun got away. >> reporter: it's unclear how the suspect is doing this morning. neighbors tell us that one was shot and taken away by ambulance, the other with a gun they say, they heard police saying that person had on a white t-shirt and police were searching for him overnight. i do have several calls into the vallejo police department. still haven't heard back. as soon as i do, i'll let you know what they had to say. reporting live in vallejo. christie smith, "today in the bay." in the south bay, san jose police are blaming the murder of a 16-year-old on gang violence. the teenager was one of two people shot about midnight sunday morning in a home on virginia avenue near the interchange of 101 and 680. responding officers say they found two people wounded. a 23-year-old man who is now in the hospital and the 16-year-old who died at the scene. a small memorial as you can see is growing at the spot where the teen died. police have not made any

arrests. they say this is the seventh gang-related murder so far this year. marla, there are new concerns this morning about the safety of the new span of the bay bridge. this coming after a probe uncovering a possible construction defect there. "today in the bay's" bob redell is live with more on this ongoing investigation. bob, good morning. >> good morning to you, jon. the new bay bridge is a large project, it's so significant that whenever workers lay down concrete, they must test it to make sure it's cured properly. well, there's a new report that indicates during some of that testing they might not have waited for that concrete to harden up first. specifically, there's a 19-foot section of concrete in the foundation that supports the main suspension tower. that was tested before it had a chance to harden. the builder allegedly kept quiet about this. it's now too late to perform that test. raising questions about whether that concrete ever cured properly and ultimately whether it's safe enough to support the

bridge. this is according to caltran's own records reported by the "sacramento bee." now, caltrans has said the bridge is safe and seismically sound. >> bottom line, we are extremely confident with the quality of the tower foundation of the new bay bridge. we see no issues, we'll be prepared over the next couple of days to develop a point-by-point response to what was put forth in the article. >> the new bridge is costing taxpayers $6.5 billion, making it the most expensive public works project in california's state history. scheduled to open labor day weekend 2013. reporting live here at the bay bridge toll plaza, bob redell, "today in the bay." meantime, work progressing on the dumbarton bridge closed through the weekend, was closed through the weekend. crews working around the clock installing a new steel plate across the entire deck. this place should allow the

bridge to move and be more flexible during an earthquake. >> so, replacing the original with a new extended seismic joint gives the deck an additional 18 inches of movement in a seismic event. >> now, officials say they'll have a better idea some time today of when the bridge will be open to the public. as of now, the plan is to have that bridge open in time for tomorrow's morning commute. and the 75th anniversary celebration of the golden gate bridge ended in grand style. even better than the fourth of july. this is just a small sample of the spectacular fireworks display lighting up the bridge. waterfall of light, lasers, and colorful fireworks combined for quite the show. and the best part was, the weather cooperated. imagine that. the fog stayed away for the entire show. it is 6:35 right now. sounds like that great weather will continue into today for whatever festivities you might

get into. barbecuing and such. christina loren telling us how nice it's going to be. >> yeah, it is going to be nice. and a lot of us have those outdoor plans. this is a live look at san jose. we do have a full deck of clouds overhead, getting peeks of sunshine. and the golden gate bridge is socked in with fog, be ut you c see half of the first tower and that's an indication this won't last as long as it did yesterday either. warming our temperatures from the 50s into the 60s by noon and then we'll round out the day in the mid-70s. it all works out like this. noon today, 62 degrees, bay side and at the coast you'll see the low 60s. by 4:00 p.m., though, the 70s return. we're talking about the mid 70s, which translates to the low 80s. and the warmest cities across the bay. 74 degrees here at 4:00 p.m. in san jose. even warmer as we head through tomorrow. and we're talking about 90-degree weather before the week is done within the next 72 hours. your full forecast is just moments away. right now, i'm going to send it

it's unclear how much damage was caused to the home. it's hard to get a look to see the damage from here. but you can see the firefighters on the roof. perhaps the home did suffer a little bit of damage. the good news here is that no one was hurt. also new this morning, neighbors in vallejo talking about a wild chase and an apparent police shooting overnight. christie smith is live at that scene right now. she's been gathering details all morning long and has the latest. good morning, christie. >> good morning to you, jon. police still out here gathering evidence nearly seven hours after this overnight shooting. neighbors say they heard tire squealing, sirens, and then gunfire. at least five or six shots near the apartments here on wilson avenue. this is right by the water front. it's believed to be started with the police chase. two suspects in a car, possibly a stolen car. police called for backup because several outside police agencies responded to help at least one suspect hit in the gunfire his condition still unknown this

morning. neighbors say the other suspect got away. one woman told us she was completely shocked to have all of this going on outside her door. >> police, i heard the sirens and everything and saw the lights outside and heard five shots go off. and then i hit the ground because i didn't want a stray bullet to hit me. >> reporter: now, one officer was hurt. it's believed he was bitten by a dog, possibly even a police dog. i do have calls into the vallejo police department, haven't heard back yet. as soon as i do, i have an update for you. reporting live in vallejo, christie smith, "today in the bay." in the south bay, san jose police are blaming the murder of a 16-year-old on gang violence. the teenager was one of two people shot about midnight sunday morning at a home on virginia avenue near the interchange of 101 and 680. responding officers say they found two people wounded. a 23-year-old man who is now hospitalized and the 16-year-old

who died at the scene. you can see a small memorial is growing at the spot where the teen died. police have not made any arrests. they say this is the seventh gang-related murder so far this year. the bay area community showing its support for the family of murdered nursing student michelle lei. a vigil was held in hayward sunday marking a o ining one ye her disappearance. balloons with notes written to her were released. the family of missing morgan hill teen sierra lamar also attended that event. that's her father. the nursing student, lei went missing after leaving classes at a hayward hospital. her body was found four months later in pleasanton. >> serves as a reminder it could be anyone's daughter, anyone's sister that could be taken the next day and not to take your loved ones for granted. >> a former high school classmate has been charged in lei's death. her trial was scheduled for september 17th which happens to be exactly one year from when

lei's body was found. well, veterans are gathering in san francisco this morning to take part in a special cross-country journey. soldiers from the iraq and afghanistan wars along with other athletes will take part in the sea to shining sea bike ride. it's a way to honor troops and the american spirits. they will leave chrissy field today to begin a three-month, 3,700-mile trek that will end on a virginia beach. on this memorial day, a tribute to victims of 9/11 attacks. it will be held in union city at the flight 93 memorial site. the 40 victims now considered heroes who died trying to stop the hijackers. and we learned this weekend the widow of flight 93's pilot has died. sandy dahl made her mission -- made it her mission to make sure no one forgot her husband. she always said she believed her

husband fought alongside passengers the day -- that day to keep terrorists from crashing the plane somewhere in washington, d.c. sandy dahl took on a public role after 9/11 speaking on behalf of grieving families. she died in her sleep. she was just 52 years old. well, now to a special tribute to veterans at stanford hospital this memorial day. patients and employees who served in the military will be given a red, white, and blue wristband. the idea here is to publicly identify the vets giving people a chance to say thanks and perhaps encourage some conversation. a stanford hospital employee is the one who came up with this idea. well, it's not your typical memorial day celebration, but for a 75th birthday, it is spot on. >> it never gets old. the 75th anniversary of the opening of the golden gate bridge wrapped up with a fantastic fireworks display.
