away. >> but it's traffic tuesday so we have your slowing and i have two big rigs in two separate incidents on two sides of the bay. we'll give you that and one update coming up. and a live look. that is the san francisco bay. that is a ferry on the bay and old glory flapping in the wind on this tuesday, may 29th, this is "today in the bay." good morning, thanks for being with us, i'm marla tellez in for laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm jon kelley. and new this morning, yes, we have good news for all you commuters on the peninsula. the dumbarton bridge back in business this morning. bob redell is live driving on the dumbo with more on the work that wrapped up ahead of schedule. bob, good morning. >> reporter: yeah, it was supposed to open at 5:00 this morning, caltrans was able to open the dumbarton at 3:00. a couple hours ahead of schedule. you might recall they shut the

bridge down at 10:00 friday night to do seismic retro fit. and that work is completed. and as you cross the bridge, there's a couple things you'll notice. it's a little bit different this morning. we're heading eastbound. we're approaching the mid span here, and on the western end of the mid span, you're going to notice there's a large wide silver plate that is now connecting two parts. that plate is replacement of an old expansion joint. they had a 30-year-old expansion joint, they replaced that this weekend with the new plate, which will give the bridge much more wiggle room in case there's an earthquake. we understand it'll have around 18 inches of movement. the bridge is also slightly higher, nothing you're going to notice, but it's been lifted roughly 5 inches. they put hydraulic jacks under parts of the bridge so that over the next several months, workers can go inside and install seismic bearings which, again, will give the bridge more flexibility on top of its piers during an earthquake.

caltrans is telling us they that will probably have another bridge closure some time down the road, perhaps shutting it down for a weekend because while they got that expansion joint on the western end of the mid span, they still have to replace one that's on the eastern end of the span, which is exactly what we're crossing over right now. if you are going to be commuting across the bridge, the commute direction does have traffic, but it's certainly at the limit. nothing that you should be planning into your schedule. looks like everything's okay. reporting live on the dumbarton bridge, bob redell, "today in the bay." traffic should be flowing smoother on one freeway starting tomorrow. that's because new metering lights will be activated along south bend 280 to 11th street in downtown san jose. caltrans says it's the first of hundreds of ramp lights that will go live all over the bay area in the next few years. this, of course, is to help the traffic and delays on local freeways. it is 6:02. suspended sheriff ross mirkarimi back before the ethics

commission today. they'll be laying the critical ground work for the official misconduct case against mirkarimi. "today in the bay's" christie smith live at city hall about the decisions being made. >> reporter: good morning to you, marla. ross mirkarimi has been before the ethics commission before. today he's going to learn more about the rules, the process, and exactly how long this might take as he continues to fight to keep his job as sheriff of san francisco county. now mayor ed lee suspended him in march after he was convicted of misdemeanor false imprisonment tieing to an argument new year's eve with his wife. her arm was bruised, and a neighbor taped her tearfully recalling the incident. mirkarimi is facing permanent removal of his job. now the ethics commission has to decide a number of things, including what type of testimony to allow, live testimony, written, and exactly how long the hearing might last.

expected to have a very long list of witnesses. mirkarimi has been out and about at events and public appearances trying to share his side of the story and of course save his job. the ethics commission will make recommendations to the board of supervisors. it would take 9 out of 11 of the supervisors to remove him from office or even reinstate him. but a final decision isn't expected until july or august. reporting live in san francisco, christie smith, "today in the bay." well, today the next step in moving past a scandal that prompted the resignation of former alameda county supervisor nadya lockyer. a group of five finalists vying to replace lockyer on the board will be interviewed this afternoon. county supervisors are expected to announce a final decision june 5th and swear in their choice june 12th. lockyer resigned on april 20th after reports of drug abuse and an affair with a drug addict. she's married to state treasurer bill lockyer.

we are following a developing story out of italy this morning. several aftershocks there, the initial quake killing at least ten people. that death toll expected to continue to rise. reports say there are people trapped inside the rubble of the collapsed building. and this all happened in the same region of italy where a 6.0 magnitude quake killed seven people a little more than a week ago. another fatal police shooting being investigated in vallejo, the second in three days. this is an update to a story we first brought you yesterday morning. police shot and killed 41-year-old anton barrett after a car and foot chase. officers say he reached for something in his waistband and they fired. it turned out to be a metal business card holder. loved ones say the suspect was a good father who worked for 15 years as a supervisor at a napa winery. >> when you're talking about fractions of seconds, there's not a lot of time to assess. they have to react or -- or put

themselves or others at harm by not reacting. >> nobody's perfect. he had a dui and that's why he ran. because he didn't want to go back. >> now, barrett as you just heard had a criminal record that includes five felony conviction and is was currently on probation. last thursday night, police shot and killed a man after he allegedly threatened them with what turned out to be a bb gun. the red cross this morning taking care of two families affected by a fire in fremont. now, this is an update to a story we originally told you about monday morning. that fire burned two houses at the intersection. flames there sparking at one house and then it ultimately spread over to another one. four adults and six children were able to get out of that house safely, both houses. firefighters still looking into exactly how this thing started. and no arrests so far after oakland firefighters find more than 200 marijuana plants while fighting a blaze near 25th and

foothill boulevard. some of the crop inside of that house burned in yesterday's fire. nobody at the time was home, and there are no reports so far of any injuries. good morning to you, it is 6:07. get ready for a warm-up, christina loren tracking warmer temps. >> today, actually, we will be three to five degrees warmer than where we ended up yesterday. still getting some of that cool pacific air, but not nearly as much cloud cover as we had this time yesterday. a good indication that sun will be out earlier warming us up by about three to five degrees. for today, in the 50s and 40s today. 46 degrees in sunnyvale to start you out. weather headlines tell the story, little bit of patchy fog and drizzle, as well. that's what we'll expect until 10:00 a.m. at the coast at which time we'll see clearing inland by about 10:00 a.m., we're expecting mostly clear conditions just about everywhere. then, as we head into the upcoming weekend, the major warm-up kicks into high gear with temperatures on the climb in the 90s. i'll let you know which cities

are slated to be the hottest and when in my full forecast coming up for today. this is what you need to know. 67 degrees inland at noon, you're peeling off your first layer inland and really comfortable, open up those windows in your home, don't need your ac just yet. i'll let you know when you might. that's coming up, seven-day outlook ready to go. here's mike with your drive. >> i promised you a lot, let's get into it, folks. slowing first of all, westbound highway 4 through antioch, that's typical, and what we expect right now holding steady for that 62 in the westbound direction. slowing eastbound right around willow pass has not cleared, but there's been no incidents reported there. we do have this, though, the first of our big rigs, southbound 242 at concord avenue. still blocking lane number three and chp is considering issuing a sig alert for this as the volume starts to build. highway 4 over to 680 south and get past that incident. we'll monitor this one on the east bay side. and on the peninsula, 92 between 280 and 235, reports of a big

rig, but they have just cleared that from the chp incident, so you should have a smooth flow for 92 anywhere west of 280, which is moving smoothly, guys. it is 6:09. time is running out in santa clara county if you want to vote by mail. today is the deadline to request a ballot for the june 5th primary. you can request a ballot online, log on to sccvote.org. well, after today you will have to go in person to the registrar's office. the registrar says only a fraction of the 500,000 ballots sent out this year have been returned. six straight days of deliberations. many at this point starting to suspect the jury may be deadlocked and unable to return a verdict. edwards accused of using campaign donations to hide his pregnant mistress during his 2008 run for the democratic presidential nomination. now, if found guilty, edwards faces up to 30 years in prison. and decision 2012, mitt

live from our chopper high above. it is back open for business waiting for the peninsula commuters. it was shut down through 3:00 this morning. shut down for about three days. i'll check the commute with mike in a minute, it is 6:14. well, marla, facebook looking to clear another hurdle in the campus expansion plans, tonight menlo park leaders going over the environmental impact reports. the social networking giant says, yeah, it needs the extra space to eventually double its current 3,600 employee workforce. that meeting is set to be held at 7:00 tonight at the menlo park city hall. well, some frightening news for fish lovers. radioactive contamination detected in blue fin tuna 6,000 miles from japan. tuna samples tested positive for increased levels of rad radioactivity. but it is still far below what is considered unsafe to eat. even so, some scientists say the

scare should drive energy policy. >> it's a good lesson about nuclear power plants, i think, along the coastline. it's important. >> now the tuna feed and waters contaminated by the fukushima power plant disaster in japan last year. former giants slugger barry bonds talking about life after baseball. comcast sports net bay area was the only camera to capture bonds discussing everything from balco to the hall of fame. the all-time home run leader says he doesn't have any regrets over what happened in the balco steroids case. a judge has given prosecutors until mid july to respond to bonds' appeal. >> i don't know what you call justification out of it, though, but that's what i am and i went through the system. i think what they gave me, that's the penalty they gave me, i'm in an appeal right now over that. >> exactly how this affects his ability to get into the hall of

leagues so far. just a slight rise in your tuesday temperatures. i know it was a little breezy yesterday afternoon. >> and breezy this morning and chilly, as well. depends on where you're waking up with us this morning. let's start with a live look outside, show you those conditions in san jose. so yesterday at this point, we had some really thick dark clouds. this morning, we're dealing with about half as much cloud cover as yesterday and that means the sun will breakthrough quicker. hence warmer this afternoon, 6:17 now, and you can see that sun is already working hard to clear your sky above san jose. as we head throughout the morning hours, these winds will continue to play a factor, and the good news is, when it comes to the winds, they're keeping that fog from settling to the surface. your visibility is three miles or better all across the board this morning. where we do have the calm winds, we are watching that fog start to develop. half moon bay you may have to use your windshield wipers this morning as you make your way up or down the peninsula. 46 degrees in sunnyvale, 51 in san jose to start you out.

and temperatures running cooler than they have been. make sure you're ready for that. dress in layers today. high pressure's going to bring your numbers up into the 70s. by noon today, talking about a really nice, nice day, especially inland. getting downright hot inland as we head through your wednesday. temperatures climbing into the mid 80s. so a ten-degree jump between today's high, tack on an additional ten in your city. 78 in san jose, 68 degrees in san francisco. up to 85 wednesday, 90 degrees thursday, and then we're going to level off just a touch on friday, 88 degrees still nice and warm for that giants game. which you can catch right here on nbc bay area. 6:18. let's check your drive on a traffic tuesday with mike. >> well, about this time you expect to see slowing in the east bay, but not on 242. we have just gotten chp's update. they want to change the status to a sig alert. we do see a good deal of slowing until just past there where that

big rig is blocking one of your middle lanes. as an alternate, highway 4 down to 680. a couple of extra minutes and will actually benefit you to get out of that slowing. we have this slowing already continued to build for antioch. that's pretty typical and not a problem through bay point until you get to 242. live look out there at san francisco, we had reports of southbound 101 right around caesar chavez, that has cleared, as well as across the dumbarton bridge, guys, as we've been talking about reopen for highway 84. back to you. >> thank you, mike. 6:19. after months of bad news about home prices, scott mcgrew says the nation's housing market may be ready to turn a corner. it's about time. >> it is. >> it's easy to forget with us, some areas in the bay area increasing in value, that has not happened in america. the data when you average out the 20 biggest housing markets show home prices have fallen steadily since the economic crisis of 2008. that may be turning around finally.

case shiller, one of the biggest and most respected measurements releasing data that economists expect will show glimmers of a general turn around. china defending itself this morning over accusations it's been dumping cheap solar technology on american markets. the u.s. has added new tariffs to solar cells built in china claiming that country unfairly subsidizes its factories. well, china counters by pointing out five u.s. states including california have their own subsidies. now the concern here is that trade war can get very expensive very quickly. the u.s. could respond by increasing taxes and tariffs on chinese-built steel for the bay bridge. remember eduardo savron who renounced his american citizenship? he's also the good guy in the fictional movie "the social network." well, he tells a magazine in his home country of brazil he has no hard feelings for mark zuckerberg even if he was shut out of the company. and speaking of zuck, here's a

documentary that aired in china. zuckerberg makes a rare cameo in the middle of it. watch for it. the narrater talking about a shortage of police officers -- wait, wait, who's that in the corner? mark zuckerberg walking behind with his wife. the assumption we have is the producer wanted stock footage of police officers used a clip about zuckerberg's visit to china without actually realizing who he was, which does happen from time to time. >> i was going to say. they probably used that clip on purpose, but you don't think so? >> no, no, according to the chinese translation, they are simply talking about the lack of police officers in china and there they have some police officers and in the background mark zuckerberg. >> talk about weird timing. >> i want to see if i can get residuals, get paid. coming up, get ready to pay even more to fly, but the latest cost increase is not the airline's idea. who is thinking this up coming up. and here's a live look at the city by the bay.

welcome back, everybody. hey, you know those personal patdowns at airport security checks? well, they could be a thing of the past. the l.a. times reports the department of homeland security asking technology companies to develop a better hand held

scanning device that would replace the pat-downs. i don't know about all you guys, i like making new friends up close and personal at the airport. passengers who set off the full body scanners now required to undergo the pat-downs by security agents. you could be paying more to fly very soon. but this next price hike cannot be blamed on the airlines. it is congress signing off on a new ticket tax. tracie potts is live in washington to tell us what's behind this new tax. i'm sure not going to sit well with passengers. good morning, tracie. >> good morning, marla. at least it's not a done deal yet. but keep in mind you are already paying $5 per ticket to the government just for your airport security fee. what it costs tsa to screen you and get you through to that plane. now they want to double that and charge everyone $10 per person for that fee. here's why. democrats on the senate side say that so many people don't want to pay the baggage fees anymore, the $25, $35, $50 a bag,

everyone's taking carry-ones. a lot more carry-ons, a lot more screening, a lot more cost for the tsa. and they argue taxpayers overall shouldn't have to pay that, the people flying should have to pay that. but republicans say adding yet another tax, another fee to these tickets could really force a lot more people not to fly. the airlines are already having tough times because of the fuel. they also say it'll be a bigger burden on families. here's where it stands. it has passed a senate committee. it is not in the house bill at all when they're looking at the overall budget for tsa. if it actually moves through the full senate, they've got negotiating to do. and the bottom line is it's not a done deal yet but certainly something to watch as you're buying your tickets now for summer and maybe even the holidays in the fall. >> all right. some red tape to get to before that passes. >> hope it doesn't. speaking of traveling, no need to go anywhere according to christina loren this week.

it is 6:30 on the nose, good morning, everybody, thank you for joining us. >> i'm marla tellez in for laura garcia-cannon. commuters headed back to work after the long holiday weekend. the dumbarton bridge is open for business today. bob redell is driving live on the dumbo with more on the work that got wrapped up ahead of schedule. a couple hours earlier than expected. good morning, bob. >> yeah, good morning to you, marla. open at 3:00 this morning until 5:00 when caltrans shut her down at 10:00 friday night, said it wouldn't open until 5:00 this morning, but they did get the work done early. go live to chopper and see one of the more obvious changes, they put a new expansion joint on the mid span that's actually on the western side of the mid span, and this expansion replaces a 30-year-old expansion joint. the new joint will allow the bridge to move 18 inches back

the elementary school. well, the worst possible news for a family on memorial day. a 21-year-old soldier killed in afghanistan. the department of defense says specialist hernandez died saturday in the kandahar province from an improvised explosive device. hernandez' flag-draped casket arrived at dover air force base in delaware yesterday. hernandez graduated from everett alvarez high school in salinas in 2008 and enlisted soon after. still spring, but fire crews across the bay area right now getting ready for what could turn out to be a very hot and extremely destructive summer. cal fire announcing the official start of the wildfire season monday. the agency says conditions unusually dry and dangerous this year. firefighters say it's not just those brown hills out there. the budget also has them worried. >> i'm nervous. and i'm nervous about the type of fires, how big they're going to get this year, and the lack of firefighters on the fire

ground and it's going to proiz the safety of all the people and as well as the firefighters. >> and a little heads up from cal fire reminding homeowners to clear at least 100 feet of defensible space around their property just to make sure they don't feed into that problem. well, the brown hills, that means we need rain. but doesn't look like any is in the foreseeable future. christina loren? >> no, the exact contrary to be specific. we have a warm-up on the way in the bay area. after today, temperatures are going to soar. it's 6:36 now. temperatures are rather cool to start with mostly clear conditions. you're at 39 degrees, just about half an hour ago. now we're starting to see the temperatures come up just a touch now that the sun is out. as we head through the day today, that cloud cover is going to clear quickly. we've got wind out of the west/southwest at 17 miles per hour in fairfield, winds are strong. we did calm down in san

francisco. that's enable smofd that fog to start to settle in. but really not too much of a factor. as we head throughout the day, your hour-by-hour forecast works out like this. 67 degrees at noon, 79 degrees inland at 4:00 p.m. the 80s in the forecast, just 48 hours away. i'll detail that in the seven-day coming up. first let's check your drive with mike. >> highway 4 back to antioch for the slowing, you expect that. and concord, a little further west. you don't expect that to creep in just yet. but it's a traffic tuesday, anything's possible. part of that might be a different flow right now. a sig alert from the chp, southbound 242 at concord avenue, continue on westbound highway 4 and then take 680 south past the scene of that, that'll get you around the slowing and that sig alert. we monitor this carefully, but so far, just okay. we're going to a live look at the bay bridge, the metering lights are on. a good heavy volume, but nothing unexpected for the span. back to you.

welcome back, everybody, on a tuesday morning, if you're heading out the door right now and you have to roll by the coliseum, here's a look at the 880 in oakland getting a little bit thick out there. mike inouye will point out the particulars, christina loren will paint your weather forecast. it is 6:44. well, new today, several aftershocks follow a powerful earthquake that killed at least ten people overnight in northern italy. )tup)q was 5.8 in magnitude. it was centered in the province of modena near bologna. reports of people still trapped in the rubble there. this is the second quake in the area in the last nine days. also new this morning, a bizarre texas standoff ends when a wanted suspect falls about 150 feet from a crane where he'd taken refuge. we'll give you a look at this video from a man inside that crane on the southern methodist university campus down in dallas yesterday. police were trying to arrest him

in a carjacking case. he then spent 14 hours inside of this cab before he actually crawled out. witnesses say he dangled by his hands for a few minutes before finally dropping all the way to the ground. well, six days of deliberations and still no verdict in former presidential candidate john edwards' corruption trial. legal experts speculate the jury is deadlocked. edwards is accused of using campaign donations to hide his pregnant mistress during his 2008 run for the democratic presidential nomination. if found guilty, edwards faces up to 30 years in prison. one of the men running this year mitt romney, taking the first step to becoming the republican nominee for president. he won't officially be the nominee until the republican national convention that's about three months away. now romney's campaign will take him to colorado and then today on to a fundraiser to be held in

francisco to san mateo. you can vividly see that from the future cast. we stop that clock at 10:00, a little bit of low cloud cover at that point hugging the coastline. high pressure's firmly in control of our weather pattern, it's going to move in and build over the great basin. as it does so, that's when we start to get those offshore winds. today looks more like an onshore set-up. by tonight, starting to see that offshore flow. so 3 to 5 degrees warmer for today. by tomorrow, the mid-80s return with winds really starting to gust especially through the east bay hills as we head through tonight. the higher elevations, the open water bridges, count on windy conditions. 78 degrees in san jose for today, 78 in livermore, 79 degrees in fairfield. pretty comfortable. consider room temperature about 72 degrees. no need for the a.c. today inland. might be kicking it on. up to 90 degrees by thursday. and that's metropolitan livermore. and san jose i'm talking about hitting that 90-degree mark, which means the warmest outlying

cities across the bay area could easily hit the mid-90s, maybe even our first triples of the season. so we're going to be all over your forecast. don't forget, catch the giants right here on nbc bay area this friday. let's check your drive at 6:49 on a traffic tuesday. >> all right, traffic tuesday. but it's right after a holiday weekend. seeing your usual suspects, but not as much traffic as sometimes we see on these days. highway 4 holding steady, just confined to antioch. some slowing now pittsburgh and bay point, but that might be partly because of this. stirring things up, the sig alert southbound 242, blocking your middle lanes by a big rig, use highway 4 down to 680, that's your alternate, and holding steady for the rest of walnut creek. christina talked about metropolitan livermore and there you go. 26-minute drive through 580. toward the dublin interchange, 680 slowing showing up for the sunol grade down to fremont right around michigan, but no big incidents for that portion

of the southbound commute. northbound north of san jose you're okay. northbound 101 from capitol expressway up to the airport, speeds in the 40s. highway 87, though, not a big deal right now. we'll move back up. dumbarton bridge that reopened highway 84. that was great news. one less headache for me. you're out there right now on highway 84. what happened? what's going on? and this may not be the last closure, radio igight? >> yeah, there might be another one some time down the road. but as far as this weekend's closure, they were able to open around 3:00 this morning instead of the promised 5:00. so you can see that traffic is already backed up and running here across the mid span of the dumbarton bridge. the mid span is where they did a seismic retro fit. two things you're going to notice when you cross the bridge. one, there's now a new expansion joint on the western end. and this joint basically gives the bridge about 18 inches of wiggle room in case of an

earthquake. and the other thing, they raised sections of the bridge by about 5 inches, they used hydraulic jacks to do that so over the next several months they can put seismic bearings between the pier and the deck again to make the bridge safer in case there is an earthquake. you were mentioning, mike, there might be another shut down. caltran does have to replace the expansion joint on the eastern end of the mid span. unfortunately they'll have to do another shut down over the weekend. reporting live here, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> way to hang tough there, bob. south bay commuters can expect extra congestion beginning tomorrow afternoon. metering lights activated on the corridor southbound 280 to 11th street in san jose. caltrans says this is the first of hundreds that will go live over the bay area in the next few years aimed with helping with traffic delays on the local freeways. 6:51, mirkarimi will be back

before the ethics commission to learn how the official misconduct case against him will play out. "today in the bay's" christie smith live at city hall with details on this hearing. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, marla. ross mirkarimi has been before the ethics commission before. but what's happening today is really important because it establishes the ground rules on how this process will work as he continues his fight to keep his job as san francisco sheriff. now mayor ed lee suspended him in march after he was convicted of misdemeanor false imprisonment tied to an argument new year's eve day with his wife. her arm was bruised and a neighbor taped her tearfully recalling that incident. mirkarimi is now facing the possibility of permanent removal. the five-member ethics commission has to decide a number of things, including what type of testimony to allow, live testimony or written testimony and exactly how long this

hearing might last. attorneys for the city and mirkarimi are expected to have a very long list of witnesses. mirkarimi for his part has been out and about at events and public appearances trying to tell his side of the story and save his job. the ethics commission will make recommendation to the board of supervisors that would take 9 of the 11 supervisors to remove him from his post. but a final decision on all this isn't even expected until july or august. reporting live in san francisco, christie smith, "today in the bay." this morning, more efforts to move past that scandal involving nadya lockyer. a group of five finalists vying to replace lockyer on the board will be interviewed this afternoon. county supervisors set to announce a final decision june 5th and swear in their choice june 12th. lockyer resigning back on april 12th after reports surfaced about drug abuse and an affair with a method addict. she is married to state treasurer bill lockyer. well, a suspect is dead and

vallejo police are investigating the second fatal officer-involved shooting in just three days. this is an update to a story we first brought you yesterday. now police shot and killed 41-year-old anton barrett after a high-speed chase when his car stopped because of flat tires, he ran from officers and then pulled what turned out to be a metal wallet from his waistband. loved ones say the suspect was a good father who worked for 15 years as a supervisor at a napa winery. >> when you're talking about fractions of seconds, there's not a lot of time to assess. they have to react or put themselves or others in harm by not reacting. >> nobody's perfect. he had a dui and that's why he ran. because he didn't want to go back. >> now, barrett had a criminal record that includes five felony convictions and was currently on probation. last thursday night, vallejo police shot and killed the man after he allegedly threatened them with what turned out to be a bb gun. a fire in oakland leading to

the discovery of a possible marijuana grow house. firefighters found more than 200 marijuana plants inside a home near 25th and foothill boulevard. much of that crop ended up burning in the fire. no one was home at the time, and there are no reports of injuries. well, the worst possible news for a family on memorial day. a 21-year-old soldier from salinas has been killed in afghanistan. specialist hernandez died in the kandahar province saturday from an improvised explosive device. hernandez' flag-draped casket arrived at dover air force base in delaware yesterday. hernandez graduated from everett alvarez high school in salinas in 2008 and enlisted shortly after. right now just a lucky to be alive family. a california family whose plane crashed over the weekend can thank a simple high-tech solution for helping save their lives. the fire department captain brian brown and his family flying over idaho saturday night when the cessna stalled and

slammed right into a mountain. incredibly they managed to survive and then their daughter used a strobe light app on her phone to guide rescue crews to the crash site. >> i have to believe there was some divine intervention too to get a cell phone call out that really shouldn't have made it. >> wow, brown and his wife and daughter right now being treated for head and back injuries. well, more than 300 people will take another shot at getting to japan after a scary incident over toronto. >> saw some pieces, made of metal, it was so hot, you couldn't touch it. >> this woman was one of several who heard some noises and then noticed damage to their cars. turns out debris fell from an air canada flight headed for tokyo. the flight was making an emergency landing after one engine failed. the boeing 777 circled back around to toronto and touched down after more than 90 minutes in the air. >> we came in fast. very fast, like twice the normal

speed. so it was concerning. but i was glad even at that speed to see ground that close. and then fire trucks came everywhere, and apparently overheated brakes was the only concern at that point. an air canada spokesman says they have not confirmed the debris that damaged those cars came from the plane. transport canada is also investigating. well, 1.3 billion people in china and cameras for documentaries about police supposedly catch a billionaire hanging in the background. a surprise cameo by facebook ceo mark zuckerberg and his wife priscilla chan recently on state-run tv. shows zuckerberg and chan just happen to be walking behind a couple of police officers, all part of a documentary about solving high-tech crime in china. zuckerberg and then girlfriend chan, they were visiting china back in march. facebook blocked in japan along with twitter, youtube, and other

foreign social media. some hope for good news about housing, but that failed to materialize today. business and tech reporter scott mcgrew has the numbers. >> giant failure. this is from case shiller, hot off the press this morning. they're talking about the national housing price composite now in its lowest level since the crisis -- lowest level since the housing crisis began in 2006. now, we're used to the idea of around here housing prices at least in some zip codes going up, but if you look at the national level, it is still a mess out there. san francisco specifically actually gained 1% in the last month measured. though the san francisco market, which does not include the south bay is still down 3% for the year. looking at wall street, the dow industrials are up 111 points this morning, facebook continues to slide, facebook is down to about $30 a share off about 4%. back to you. >> started at 38 too. one final check on your
