he's usually good at chipping pucks out. you know, justin came over. i just wanted to make sure i was somewhere in the middle just in case something happens. turned out pretty good. you know as i was going in on marty, world class goaltender. i think i got the best of it tonight. >> pierre: there was a lot of punching and counterpunching. is this the kind of game you were expecting? >> yeah. we're both good teams in the neutral zone. you just want to make sure you get through the neutral zone without turnovers. we had a few. they had a few. i'm sure we'll be sharper in game two. >> narrator: is this the most adversity you have faced? you get to lose on the road. >> it seems we didn't face a lot of adversity during the playoffs. i think our season was quite a bit of a challenge for us. you know, ups and downs, coaching change. you know, we're prepared coming in. >> pierre: see you for game two.

court. the key piece of evidence coming into focus. >> pressing your luck, the potential changes involving sports betting here in california. and developing news in the east bay as police investigate a shooting at a jewelry store. good evening and thanks for joining us for this special edition of nbc bay area news. >> it was a chilling day in the southern california court. the case two men accused of severely beating giants fan brian stow began today. this could determine if they face trial. the hearing included a cell phone recording that could be a critical piece of evidence. today, 14 months after the notorious beating in the dodger stadium parking lot. luis sanchez and marvin nodorwo saw a cell phone photo of themselves during the game that fatefuorday. norwood near the camera, sanchez

two over in the sunglasses. both men heard a series of witnesses describe sanchez and belligerently rude and confronting others before they encountered brian stow. during this preliminary hearing, the judge allowed reporters to record witness with audio, but not actual video of those testifying. sheila christiansen describes sanchez taunting the couple wearing giants apparel. >> he was yelling obscenities at the couple. >> later the court heard from the man in the giants jersey who identified sanchez in this photo as the man to the right of the sunglasses. >> after the last pitch in the ninth inning, we were seated and we felt liquid landing over us, and we turned around and the gentleman in the sunglasses was spraying coke on us. >> reporter: mcdaniels said he got up and made eye contact with sanchez. >> the person who pulled sanchez

back was identified as codefendant marvin norwood, they're now accused of felony assault and may hem for the injuries inflicted after the game on stowe. an offduty paramedic who with travelled from the bay area to dodger's stadium to root for the giants. stowe is recovering from brain damage he suffered. norwood with spoke with detectives inside l.a. police headquarters during an interview that was recorded and a portion was played in court. norwood had been allowed to make a personal cell phone call using a detectives phone. >> i don't know. i mean, i was involved.

>> disturbing for many people to hear that. we mentioned brian stow, he continues his rehab at an undisclosed location in the central valley. >> may be able to drop a 20 on the next giants game. a bill has passed the state senate that would allow you to bill on sports games at casinos and horse racing tracks. damian trujillo says the state could turn out to be a big winner if it passes. >> he'll sit at the bar and watch the ball game, hoping he can get on the phone to call his bookie. >> it makes the game a lot more exciting, especially if i don't know the games, i'm a neutral. it gets me excited about, even if it's a small amount of money, i you have that bit of interest in it. >> that was at home in ireland, john cassidy may soon be able to walk into a place like san jose's bay 101 and place his bets. a bill is in the assembly rules committee now, which would legalize sports betting at places already licensed by the

california gaming commission. >> i think it brings in a lot of money to vague as, why not bring it here. we're always looking for ways to bring money to the bay area. there you go. >> reporter: that's the rational of the lawmaker proposing the bill, saying it could include a great deal of money. >> that's what i miss about home, on saturday, i can go in and put down five. it makes my saturday a bit more fun. >> there are those who are ethically against gambling, but can see the payoffs to state coffers. >> i'm kind of in between. on the fence. >> california coalition against gambling is against the bill, along with the state police chief association saying it would increase crime in their cities. john cassidy says take it from ireland, and take a gamble. damian trujillo, nbc bay area news. one person in the hospital tonight after an attempted robbery at a san ramon-allry

store. the robbery ended in gunfire. this all happen ed on north canyon road. kimberly terry joins us with the latest at the scene. >> police have been here since about 4:30 this afternoon. that's when they started getting the calls for the shooting. police say they don't have many details, that they can give us right now. because this is an ongoing investigation. what they did say was that the suspect went into golden treasures. this afternoon with the intent to rob it. at one point shots were fired. one of the suspects was hit, he was able to get halfway across san ramon valley boulevard before collapsing. the extent of his injuries are not yet known. police will not say who fired the gun or if the suspects were armed. we were able to speak to the daughter of the owners of that jewelry store. >> i know my parents were fine, my co-worker was fine, that's about it. one guy got taken away in an

ambulance. there were probably four total. >> family of the owner not say whether they had guns in the store. police believe there were in fact four suspects, three were able to get away, in a four-door 1990s sedan. investigators are trying to get a better description of that vehicle, and, of course, find out who the other three suspects are right now. police continued to have this area of san ramon valley boulevard cordoned off at the 2500 block of san ramon valley boulevard. if you are driving in this area, please be aware of that. live in san ramon, kimberly terry, nbc bay area news. >> thank you very much, kimberly. when your kids are in school, you want to know they're safe, that didn't happen in oakland today. a student was shot on a high school campus. it happened as classes let outt for the day at park and mcarthur. witnesses watched as a gunman opened fire on the victim from about 20 feet away. the suspect still on the streets tonight. the 18-year-old victim receiving

we can't see much from outside the gate, we have seen dozens of cars enter. republican presidential candidate mitt romney is here raising money for his campaign. his supporters were with greeted by a small quiet group of president obama supporters. they are making sure mr. romney's donors don't support the republican candidate's platform. president obama's former deputy assistant of commerce says romney has a hitry of bad business decisions that hurt workers. >> counting business experience, who's putting profit ahead of the long term vision for the country who made his career bankrupting companies for short term personal game. >> so far guests and members of the romney campaign haven't spoken with us. tibbetts for a chance to meet mr. romney range from $1500 to $50,000. according to pete wilson and george shultz and condoleezza

same sex marriage. the next time the earth shakes in san francisco, scientists will pay specific attention to a high rise. because the usgs just installed some high-tech instruments. >> reporter: it's hard to miss this building from just about any place in san francisco. 64 floors of cutting edge seismic engineering. >> we have to reinvent how we look at tall buildings, how we design them, analyze them. that's what we did here. >> this building will be analyzed much closer than any other in the u.s. the u.s. geological survey just installed 72 seismic sensors throughout the building's floors. >> this is the largest number of sensors in the country, and perhaps the world. >> the sensors will track movement from floor to floor. today it was the wind shaking things up. >> this is the actual motion left and right, east and west.

entire scientific world. back at it again, volunteers gathered once again to continue their search for missing teen, sierra lamar. searchers fanned out all across morgan hill to look for any sign of the 15-year-old. they're planning another search on saturday. marc klass says it's crucial to find her and soon. >> and we got to take this bargaining chip away from this punk. right now he's in a situation where he can maybe trade a deal for her life, and that really needs to be taken off the table. >> the man accused of kidnapping and killing sierra lamar is expected to enter a plea in court tomorrow. you may remember he was arrested last week after investigators say they found dna linking him to sierra. sierra was last seen on the morning of march 16th as she headed off to school. we continue to follow the investigation into a devastating fire in the south bay. the fire was first reported just

after 2:30 this afternoon. it's on conifer lane in san jose. you see the map there. our nbc chopper was overhead. crews battled to contain the massive four alarm blaze. it took at least 80 firefighters to knock it down by 5:30 this evening. flames ultimately damaged two homes. >> when i got on scene, there was fire and smoke from the primary residence. that fire jumped into the attic space of a second house. there was a really aggressive firefight. >> one firefighter is being treated for minor burns. one of the two homes is a total loss. >> drivers around the south bend may have noticed a change while driving home today. the new metering lights on 280 were with turned on for the first time during the afternoon commute. this is a follow-up to a story we with first brought you on tuesday. drivers we talked to seem to be

split on the long lights. others say it just makes a slow commute even slower. caltrans insists it will move smoothly in places where the lights are installed. let's bring in jeff ranieri. it's already a short holiday week, can we peak toward 90 anyway? >> not quite there yet. 85 in gilroy. 60s in san francisco with that cooler sea breeze. current numbers dropping into the 50s and 60s for most of us, we'll take you out to our sky camera network. looking back across the golden gate bridge. there is some haze in the atmosphere, the air quality will be suffering as we head into thursday as numbers are expected to go higher. not only that, we'll keep breezy to windy conditions. that's only going to aggravate your allergies. we're going to up, down and back up again. it's going to be a little

annoying for some of you. here is the good news, if you don't want the rainfall, we've been spared by several hundred miles. we're getting rainfall up into washington. high pressure will move in right across central california, and where it's going to position itself is not going to be hot for earn from the east bay back into the coastline, we'll have more than southerly coastal breeze here. keeping numbers in the 50s and 60s from san francisco to half moon bay. for interior sections, the wind will back more out of the north, that will provide 80s and 90s. it will be a brief warming stint by thursday. after we expect some records. friday the records will start to come on down. 54 in los gatos. 51 in redwood city. close to 90 for a lot of the south bay. we think we'll hit 90 in gilroy. 84 in palo alto, 87 in sunnyvale. slightly warmer for the east bay with the wind a little more dry here. 90 in walnut creek.

there you go, 91 in livermore, 89 in pleasanton. cooler back by the bay as we get closer to the sea breeze. numbers will be moderating. 72 in oakland. if you like the cold weather, you don't have to go too far. head to the coastline, we'll have 68 in pacifica. as we mentioned, it will be short lived with the heat all the way through friday. then by saturday the fog and drizzle start to roll back into the coastline. numbers will come on down in response to that cooling wind that looks to take over here as we head throughout sunday. by monday, tuesday and also wednesday we are expecting dry weather, however, clouds will increase, and temperatures look to go below average. by wednesday, we go back up again. it's that transitional time of the year where it's warmer. the east bay team with a rare honor in the upcoming olympic game. >> the social network with stock akmpe y maka big e cision.de

facebook halo or facebook flop. other tech companies are changing their plans because of it. >> one company is postponing its ipo all together. >> that company is kayak, the online travel service which had been prepping for its own stock offering out this morning with the news it will postpone an ipo pulling back after the facebook ipo. facebook tumbling again today, saw its stock price fall about 2.5% to settle above $28 a share. they probably wish they could fast forward through this one with, but tivo still losing money. they're reporting a quarterly loss made deeper by a legal fight against verizon. tivo shares falling by 4% in

often this year. a company in california has donated $10,000 worth of fuel to fuel the choppers. their budget was slashed from 350,000 to $100,000 during a major round of cut backs in 2009. now, since then the cities two main helicopters have only been able to fly about 200 hours a year. that's down from 1,000 hours a year before those budget cuts. that fuel in california's donation will pay for more nighttime. >> this piece of equipment allows officers to get a view even before street officers arrive. the helicopter gets to the scene within five to ten seconds from the time of the dispatch. >> oakland's police chief adds the donation goes a long way toward making the streets of oakland much safer.

>> yeah, it's amazing. your faith in the nba draft relying on a ping-pong ball. they bounced in favor of new orleans. the hornets grab the top pick in this year's nba draft. the warriors ended up with the seventh overall pick, the warriors could not be more pleased with that. that's because of a previous trade. if the warners had not ended up in the top seven, their first round pick would have gone to utah. since they held on, they get to keep that first round pick. now the warriors have two picks in the first two rounds. so they have options. >> in previous years we got stephan curry. we'll look at all the possible players in that range, and draft what we think is the best one available. we have work to do, and i don't think we can be too selective and just draft on need. we're not going to let a great player pass us by because it's a position where we feel we have a player at. we're going to draft the best player available and this is a good draft to do that in.

a school community in east oakland is celebrating the grand opening of an edible garden. it's a collaboration between the city of oakland, the unified school district and various community organizations. for the past few years, various groups have been working to promote nutrition for oakland's children. >> it will sefb and it is serving a community where you have 97% of the families are on reduced lunch. so it's not quite a food desert, but most of the really healthy food that is offered here through the farmer's market, a lot of families can't afford it. >> very positive program. the first seeds will be cilantro. and fruit trees will be planted next week. a lesson from the san francisco zoo tonight on the bird in the hand. in the case of this penguin chic a bird in the hand is so cute and priceless. this cutie is one of four to breakthrough herschel last week.
