good morning, everybody. it's 4:30, i'm jon kelley. >> and i'm marla tellez in for laura garcia-cannon. breaking news in the south bay. two fires at a san jose high school in just the past few hours. "today in the bay's" bob redell is live at the scene with more on what's happening. bob, good morning. >> good morning to you marla and jon. here at evergreen valley high school here in south san jose where the san jose fire department is still on scene. the fires are out, but they are treating these as suspicious. one, these happened overnight, two, they happened in two different locations about 50 feet from each other. you've got this one fire that's in the dumpster, that's scorched pretty badly and back and to the right there was a fire set up

against the building where the library is located. not clear what burned there, a pile of something. the first fire clearly was isolated by itself, but the second fire is the fire that is drawing concern because it could have easily set the building on fire if it weren't for a smoke alarm. the smoke alarm went off. the alarm company notified the fire department. this is around 2:30, 2:40 this morning, that's how they knew to come out here. the damage to the outside of the library building is superficial, but the flames did spread from the bottom up to the top and towards the roof. but the fire department was able to get here in time to put this fire out. again, they are treating this as a suspicious fire. they will have an arson investigator out here. if not already, certainly by sun up to figure out who would try to set these fires. and no one was hurt, they don't have any suspects, of course, as of yet. and as far as school is concerned, school is out for summer, this will not be affecting the operation of

another couple of minutes there, but 29 to 37 and 80. all those roads showing a little bit of slowdown with our sensors. light volume of traffic that should clear up over the next few minutes. we should track that, meanwhile we'll follow the commute down to the bay bridge and just some construction between cleveland and ashby. no major concerns and no major slowing, guys, back to you. >> thank you very much. san francisco police searching for a female suspect in an overnight stabbing. a call about 1:00 a.m., they found a man stabbed in the upper body. he was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. now police say the attack was the result of an argument between the man and woman. she left the scene. police right now looking for her to question her. 4:33, the day after her accused killer appeared in court, friends and family of sierra lamar will hold a rally spreading home that the morgan hill teen will be found alive. 21-year-old antolin garcia-torres appeared in court

yesterday but did not enter a plea. he was arrested 11 days ago. investigators found dna inside his vw jetta that strongly matches sierra's dna. this will be a difficult case to prove. >> it's the absence of a body, crime scene, murder weapon. there's a lot of things that the prosecution has to put together in this case to get a murder conviction. so it is a challenge. >> sierra lamar last seen march 16th in morgan hill. a rally is set for tonight in washington high school in fremont where sierra once att d attended school. a mother who claims her son was abused by redwood city teacher is now suing for $1 million. a lawsuit claims she kicked the 5-year-old autistic boy and withheld food and water from him. ba ba badas pleaded not guilty to nine

charges. bagdis returns to court at the end of the month to set a trial date. the man accused of a deadly hit-and-run due in court today. sunnyvale police arresting 25-year-old sing at sfo on wednesday. they say he flew to india one day after the crash back in march in which he allegedly ran over jennifer flores with his car, ultimately killing her. flores leaves behind two young children. sing being held at the santa clara county jail facing homicide charges. 4:35. oakland will shut down two hotels known for harboring prostitutes. the judge this week declared the hotels a public nuisance. under the tentative ruling, the national lodge and the economy inn must close for one year beginning no later than july 31st. the owners will also be fined and must pay for the city's legal work and police investigations related to the cases. the wife of san francisco

suspended sheriff is lashing out at the city for releasing a short clip of video at the center of her husband's domestic abuse case. >> going to use these just in case he wants to take theo away from me. because he said that, that he's very powerful and he can. >> this is video of ileana lopez crying and showing an arm on her bruise from her husband ross mirkarimi. the ethics commission released the clip as it investigates mirkarimi for official misconduct. in a statement, lopez criticized city officials for releasing the video. mirkarimi also spoke up telling us, " the release of the video is the latest heavy-handed tactic to ruin me with absolutely no regard for my family's well-being." the california department of public health is hitting some bay area hospitals with penalties for improper licensing. hospitals in alameda, san francisco, and santa clara

counties are among 15 hospitals statewide to issue those fines. hospitals penalized for not following licensing requirements that the department says has caused or could cause serious injury or death to patients. the department will release a list of those hospitals today. well, turning now to decision 2012, mitt romney continues his campaign in california today. last night he got an endorsement from nancy reagan. mrs. reagan released this statement yesterday. mitt and ann romney joined me at my home for some lemonade and cookies and i offered my firm endorsement of his campaign for president. now reagan also said, "ronnie would've liked governor romney's business background and his strong principles. and i have to say i do too. i look forward to seeing him elected president in november." we can also tell you that romney took time on his bay area visit to drop by a bankrupt solar company and launch a brand new attack on president obama. romney making a surprise visit

to solyndra in fremont yesterday calling it a symbol of gross waste and failure. also running a web ad criticizing president obama for giving solyndra $528 million in federal loan guarantees. solyndra, of course, defaulted on that loan. political experts say romney has to win over undecided voters. but solyndra, well, it may not be an issue most voters care about. >> and i think for those independent voters, it's a really mainstream issues. job, housing, you know, the economy, that's what he needs to speak to if he wants to get their attention and get their vote. >> a new round of polls show obama or romney either tied or separated by one or two percentage points. well, california's primary is tuesday, june 5th, stay with nbc bay area and nbc bay area.com for live continuing coverage up to and beyond election day. you can read more about the candidates and all the issues on

our website, nbcbayarea.com. good morning to you, just about 4:39, how did you like the weather yesterday? >> loved it. want more of it today. sound a little greedy. >> yeah, i think you can be greedy when it comes to the warm weather. what do you think, christina? >> i think he can do whatever he wants. we've got a good-looking day. this morning, grab that water bottle if you're headed out the front door. and you work outside because take a look at where we ended up yesterday. maybe subtracting three or four degrees at the coast, but getting just about as hot as we head through this afternoon. so gilroy yesterday almost hit the triple digits. i think they will today, 96 degrees in livermore, 92 in walnut creek, san jose, 90 here, and even mountain view hit 90 degrees. it was a hot day all across the board. 59 this morning in san jose so you don't need a sweater, you don't need a jacket, you can go straight to the tank top if you'd like to just about everywhere. no 40s on this temperature map this morning.

as we head throughout the day today, we are going to see a little bit of a change. increasing clouds toward tonight, but not before we hit highs close to records again. high pressure going to start to weaken a little bit as this area of low pressure starts to work through. this is going to usher in some rain as we head through next week. stick around, your seven-day forecast is on the way. we're going to aubt the giants on nbc bay area tonight and your best beach cities this weekend. 4:40, let's check your drive. this is mike. >> a note for folks on southbound 680 past bernal. i'll get more updates from chp, but so far, sounds like someone called it in to report it. but it doesn't sound like an issue for drivers other than that one. maybe some chipped paint. i hope not. we're looking over to the north there and slowing northbound 680, but the construction zone declared overnight called by caltrans is in the southbound direction. perhaps those sensors are being messed around a little bit by the slower moving vehicles. we'll check on that, but so far no incidents for the northbound

>> we will get a better picture this morning of how the economy is doing. but economists, not expecting good news. new unemployment numbers coming out in a couple of hours from right now. they're expected to show some improvement, but not enough to bring the jobless rate down from 8.1%. economists do predict 150,000 new jobs far better than april. president obama's challenge right now is to put that all in perspective. >> remember, the economy was cliff diving back then in 2009. now we continue to be in a pretty stable recovery, but too slow. >> meantime in the dirty work of running for the president, the president's campaign taking aim at rival mitt romney's record on job creation in massachusetts and the fact he only served a single term. romney pointing out his unemployment was only 4.7% during his administration. college students are saddling a lot more debt as the price of student loans skyrockets.

we turn to seema mody live at cnbc headquarters. good morning. >> good morning. yeah, you hit the nail on the head. disturbing news involving student loan debt. according to new data from the federal reserve, student loans has soared over 275% over the past decade. student loan debt hit $904 billion in the first quarter of this year compared to $241 billion in the same period in 2003. now besides the whole mortgages, student loans are the highest form of consumer debt, long-term student debt delinquency rates stand at 8.69%. in terms of the markets right now, futures are pointing lower this morning, investors are saying good riddance to may after the largest point and percentage drop in two years. the dow jones was only finished positive on a total of five days in may, the last time that happened june of 1969. the dow falling 819 points or 6.2% last month. it's another busy day for

economic data. all eyes on the employment data from may coming out at 5:30 this morning on the west coast. we'll also be looking at personal income and spending. the manufacturing survey, construction spending, and monthly auto sales and reported throughout the day. in terms of what we're watching today, a busy day in terms of economic data coming out. >> thank you, seema. well, we've already had two named tropical storms, but today marks the official start of hurricane season. the national oceanic and atmospheric administration predicts 9 to 15 this year alone, with as many as eight becoming hurricanes. of those hurricanes, 1 to 3 of them could become major storms with top winds of 111 miles per hour or higher. and i'm no expert in that field, but that's pretty fast. >> yeah, i know you've covered some hurricanes in your time. >> yeah. i forecasted for three years in miami just to find out all about tropical weather. but i'm much happier here.

>> we're happy to have you here. >> safe in california, you know what i mean? really good-looking weather for today in california. we're going to see some changes. i wanted to point out how hot it was yesterday. 99 degrees in gilroy. so this is the hottest weather we've had so far this year. today, if you live inland, it really depends how far inland you live. gilroy and fairfield will likely be warmer. we'll see another warm day. starting out nice and mild. this is going to contribute to another record-breaking day. yesterday we had plenty of 40s and low 50s on the map. not the case today, talking about the 50s and upper 60s. 52 degrees to start in livermore. and i had to do something that i haven't done in quite some time. i put 100-degree readings on your forecast for today. and that looks unsightly for this early in the season. west/southwest wind at 13 miles per hour, staying hot friday as the winds continue to pump, at least for the first part of the day. the offshore flow is what warms us up. and as it continues today for

the first part of the day, starting out so mild, i think we will easily hit -- look at this, 100 degrees in gilroy, in fairfield. doesn't look right. 72 in san francisco and 90 degrees today right here in san jose. so if you want to stay cool, you can catch those giants right here in the comfort of your air-conditioning tonight at 7:00. taking on the cubs, we'll have that forecast coming up. saturday, sunday, we start to cool off more fog in the morning hours and that's going to contribute to some really perfect conditions inland. you really are going to get nice weather this weekend. and monday, we get showers, not just up in the north bay, looks like the entire bay area is going to get wet. and that's good news because we need better air quality. and that will contribute to clean spring air. back to you guys. >> thank you very much, christina. south bay parents taking an interest in what goes on at school beyond the classroom. the middle school hosting an event teaching parents how to talk to their children about drugs and figure out if they're using drugs. handed out drug tests for

parents to take home. >> yeah, i wanted to know what tips i could use. but i found out a whole lot more about what's going on now today that i am not aware of, or was not aware of. >> and this event was put on by a peer educator. 4:50, a somber and emotional day is looming for a bay area fire department. two san francisco firefighters being honored tomorrow almost one year after they died fighting the house fire in diamond heights. anthony and vincent were killed by a super heat flashover. their family now has a garden honoring them. the station will open the doors to the public tomorrow for a dedication and barbecue. firefighters say a year later, emotions are still raw. >> they worked with them often. it could have been their day. the layers are very -- it's the ground zero. it really is the emotional ground zero for line of duty deaths.
