what do you see? >> well, the fires are out. thank goodness for fire and smoke alarms because the fire set beyond that gate there against the wall might have done more serious damage to the building. the library here. the fire department believes it was intentionally set because it happened overnight and not the only one. there was a second fire set in that dumpster not far from the other fire. fortunately, the fire alarm did alert the fire department. this was a little after 2:30 this morning. san jose firefighters were able to distinguish both fires fairly fast. the dumpster fire didn't threaten any structures. but the other, it was a pile of debris outside the library. it did scorch the wall. it started to get up on ton of the ceiling, but we understand that it is superficial damage. and it did send a small amount of smoke in the building. >> and the fires do appear

suspicious. our arson investigator is on scene now and investigating the fire as of now. >> reporter: since last week was the last day of class here for the summer, this will not be affecting any classes today because school is out. reporting live here in south san jose, bob redell, "today in the bay." next, we have a developing story in san francisco where police are trying to track down a woman accused of stabbing a man and nearly killing him overnight. officers found a man in his 30s on ellis street before 1:00 this morning with stab wounds in his upper body. he is now in the hospital holding on to life. officers say the attack happened after an argument between that man and the female suspect. so far officers have not been able to find her. 5:02 now. the day after her accused killer appeared in court, friends and family of sierra lamar will hold a rally in hopes that the morgan hill teen will be found alive. 21-year-old antolin garc

garcia-torres appeared in court but did not enter a plea. he was arrested 11 days ago after investigators say they found dna inside his vw jetta that could be connected to sierra. legal experts say this will be a difficult case to prove. >> absence of the body, it's the absence of the crime scene, the absence of a murder weapon. so there's a lot of things that the prosecution has to put together in this case to get a murder conviction. so it is a challenge -- >> sierra lamar was last seen march 16th. a rally is set for 7:00 tonight at washington high in fremont where sierra once attended school. two motels known as havens for hookers will be shut down in the east bay. an alameda county judge issuing a tentative ruling to close the economy in and the national lodge both in oakland. community leaders and police officials testifying the motels have long histories of allowing and profiting from prostitution

including child prostitution. the motel will have to close no later than july 31st and they have to pay a total of $45,000 each in fines. san francisco's controversial law could be headed across the bay. berkeley's mayor wants a similar measure for his city. "today in the bay's" christie smith live in berkeley with a look at this proposal and how well it has worked in san francisco. christie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, marla. and happy friday. berkeley's mayor is behind this move and he says he knows it's probably going to cause concern among berkeley voters, but he said it was motivated by a scene here on telegraph avenue where sometimes you see young people and their dog sitting and laying around repeatedly asking people for spare change. mayor tom bates says berkeley residents have asked him to stop and fix this. also had a sit/lie ordinance for two years since voters approved

it in 2010. the report in "sf weekly" shows it's not as effective as it might seem, and most of the citations go to the same repeat offenders. 19 of them. berkeley already has an ordinance in place against laying on the sidewalk from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. but he says what people do is they just sit up and this would add teeth to that and close that loophole. fines would be about $50 and get higher for repeat offenders. bates said he would like this on the november ballot. reporting live in berkeley, christie smith, "today in the bay." the wife of san francisco suspended sheriff says her family is a victim of a political witch hunt. and now ileana lopez is considering suing the city for releasing a short clip of a video at the center of her husband's domestic abuse case. >> this happened yesterday. i'm going to use these just in case he wants to take theo away from me. because he said that -- that

he's very powerful and he can -- he can do it. >> that is the extremely emotional video of lopez telling a neighbor her husband ross mirkarimi bruised her arm during an argument on new year's eve. the clip was released by the city ethic commission which is considering removing mirkarimi from office. now the commission says it's required to make hearings public and the video's release is inevitable. but lopez firing right back saying the decision to release the video is tearing her family apart. lopez is in her native venezuela with her young son theo to escape the media glare around this case. as for her husband, he tells us, " the release of the video is the latest heavy-handed tactic to ruin me with absolutely no regard for my family's well-being." well, he never saw it coming, that's how witnesses described bryan stow in the moments before he was brutally attacked outside dodgers stadium. today marks day three of the

preliminary hearing for suspects sanchez and norwood. three women who say they saw the attack testified in a southern california courtroom thursday. the witnesses say they were heading to their cars after the game when the atmosphere in the parking lot turned violent. >> the gentleman in the blue shorts with the white shirt punched brian. i heard bryan hit the pavement. it sounded like a thud like someone's head was smashing against the pavement on the parking lot. >> they were out of breath. one of them had his jersey in his hand. and they were saying drive, drive, drive. >> now, despite their graphic testimony, none of the witnesses was able to positively identify norwood and sanchez as the attackers. it is 5:07 right now. an emotional day looming for a bay area fire department. two san francisco firefighters being honored tomorrow almost

one year after they died fighting a house fire in diamond heights. anthony and vincent perez both killed by a super heated flashover. their firefighter family now has a new garden at station 26 honoring both of them. the station will open the doors tomorrow for a dedication and barbecue. firefighters say a year later, emotions still very raw. >> they work with him often. it could have been their day. the layers are very -- it's the ground zero. it really is the emotional ground zero for line of duty deaths. >> we can tell you members of the diamond heights business community paid for that garden installation. the dedication ceremony starts at 10:30 tomorrow morning. well, leaders from several bay area cities will gather today to talk about the impact of california's high-speed rail project. the peninsula city's consortium consists of five cities that have joined together to monitor construction of the project between san francisco and san jose. this morning, the group will discuss plans to upgrade

caltrain and electrify the tracks. caltrain wants to share the track with the high-speed rail line. it's going to be harder to light up one of those fine cigars up in wine country. you're no longer allowed to smoke in outdoor restaurant and bar areas in sonoma county. businesses can set up designated areas, but they have to be 25 feet away from dining areas. smoking is banned in common areas of apartment complexes, county owned properties, or in lines at atms or movie theaters. >> that's my old stomping ground, sonoma county. >> that's right. christina loren, how is it looking out there? >> it's going to be hot in sonoma county in particular today. this is the reason why we were expecting a little bit more coastal cooling courtesy of some low clouds, but just not getting those, 5:09, it's only 5:09 in the morning. take a look at how bright it is. we will see low clouds between the hours of about 8:00 and 10:00. overall, though, looking almost

as hot right by the water today and hotter in some inland cities. in san mateo, you want to dress for the summer, although we officially kick off the first day of summer in 20 days. the first day of june. it's going to feel like june in the bay area. it's going to feel like august in september. 13 miles per hour. in fairfield right now. the winds are coming offshore. and for us, that's going to keep us nice and warm and keep the cloud cover out in the pacific at least for the first part of the day. we're going to start warming up right as that sun comes up. official sunrise just before 6:00 a.m. take a look at some of your numbers today. triple digits in the bay area. fairfield, 100 degrees. 90 in san jose, and 84 degrees in fremont. even getting warm along the peninsula in redwood city. so i'll take you through your full forecast. we've got showers on the way, going to swing your temperatures in the opposite direction. stay tuned for that. mike, it's friday, is it light? >> so far, so good.

people make their way into san francisco early on this friday morning. your time now is 5:15. well, it's been a few months coming, but we can tell you now boxing world champion on his way to jail today. floyd mayweather jr. starts his 90-day jail sentence today. admitting to hitting his former girlfriend and twisting her arm. the undefeated boxer pled guilty to misdemeanor battery, domestic violence, and harassment charges back in december. we can also tell you the home where amy winehouse lived and later died is on the market. the family is selling the home because they didn't feel it was appropriate for them to live there. fans have set up memorials outside the three-bedroom property in camden after her death last july. this one is listed for sale at $4.2 million. just about 15 minutes, we'll get more news that scott mcgrew expects will show us the economy is barely bumping along. scott, we're talking about the monthly jobs numbers.

>> yeah, good morning, marla. it's been a jobless spring after solid job growth numbers a the the start of the year. we've been hit with month after month of really mediocre job growth at best. now, the expectation is the american economy will add around 130,000 to 150,000 jobs in the month of may when you consider the workforces around 130 million. you see what little growth that actually is. now, it is possible we'll see a lousy jobs number at 5:30, then see the markets rally at 6:30, which on the face of it doesn't make sense. but the news may be so bad, traders will start to think the fed has to do something more about the economy. so the news may be bad enough to be good. another company has the latest ipo. formula one racing which was to start selling stock, won't just yet citing the rocky markets and, of course, that poor economy. several companies have actually delayed their ipo. this after facebook's

unbelievably bad performance. seema mody live at cnbc headquarters tracking that. good morning. >> yeah, good morning. thank you for that. it's been a rough couple of weeks for shareholders of facebook. the stock is down over 22% from the ipo price of $38 a share. this puts the stock on pace for the biggest two-week loss of any ipo with a value of over $1 billion since 1995. now, the ceo of morgan stanley, the bank that ran the ipo was on cnbc yesterday saying investors needed to give the stock a little bit of time. in terms of where the markets are at, futures are pointing lower this morning and investors are saying good riddance to may after the largest monthly point and percentage drop in two years. the dow jones finished positive on a total of five days in may. the last time that happened was in june of 1969. the dow fell 819 points, it's another busy day for economic data as you pointed out, all eyes on employment data for may

make sure if you do work outside or you'll be spending any duration outdoors today, graduations actually happening today across the bay area. you want to make sure to dress nice and cool and seek shade, try to sit in the shade if you will be out there. that was a live look at san jose completely clear, now we're taking you to san francisco where you will notice a little bit of haze here. we do have some moisture, some fog trying to develop. not going to be the case, and as a result, temperatures today are going to end up to be a little bit warmer than where we were yesterday. 54 degrees in san francisco to start, 57 in sunnyvale, overall, your temperatures this morning are running three or four degrees warmer than we were at this time yesterday. as a result with the warm start, high pressure staying strong in these northeasterly winds continuing to pump from land to sea. we're talking about a day with triple digits in the warmest cities across the bay. isolated triple digits, 100 degrees in gilroy and ferry fie ferryfield. we'll see more of a breeze coming off the ocean, and for us, more of a marine layer.

that's going to keep us a touch cooler, and then an area of low pressure throughout the second half of your weekend. that could bring us some showers. best chance for that monday into tuesday up in the north bay. but i think the greater bay area will get wet. very light showers and temperatures will stay in the 70s. also have a chance for some thunderstorms. we'll talk about that coming up. take a look at the forecast for today. 100 degrees in fairfield, 92 in concord. and tonight, if you've got tickets to the giants' game, it's going to be perfect summer-like baseball viewing weather. remember, if you're not going to be out there, we've got it on nbc bay area. all the action starts right here, don't ever change that channel at 7:00. 84 degrees on saturday, sunday 82, showers monday into tuesday and we're going to clear you out. good air quality as we wake up tuesday morning into wednesday. let's check your drive at 5:20 with mike. we're seeing a pretty smooth drive throughout the east bay. i want to call out the incident. we have found out a bit of information. this is at the fifth off ramp. a disabled vehicle. the off ramp is open.

but watch for those flashes lights and a little slowing because obviously there's some activity there. other than that, though, a smooth drive heading up toward the bay bridge toll plaza and the maze. the feeder roads 24 and the caldecott tunnel moving smoothly. however, heading away from the bridge, we have a construction crew reported there at the curve, the berkeley curve off of the maze and heading up toward the east shore freeway. countercommute and should be clearing shortly. we have the continuation of the muni construction project. lines are disrupted and through monday morning at 5:00 a.m. that should reinstate the underground lines we've had folks with that -- with the buses, but just to note again, you have to make that adaption over the weekend. and a live look at the freeways heading down here, northbound 280 underneath 880 and then 17 traveling the other way. a smooth drive right now. light volume for the south bay. no major issues, guys, back to you. >> thank you, mike. 5:21. coming up, it's national

now 5:30. i'm jon kelley. >> and i'm marla tellez in for laura garcia-cannon. two overnight fires on one high school campus. investigators on scene right now believe arson is to blame. "today in the bay's" bob redell is live on the scene. good morning. >> reporter: yeah, good morning to you, marla. and the fire department has just left. they've completed their on scene investigation, if you will. these fires happened a few hours ago. they're clearly out right now. one was right over here in this dumpster right up against the fence here at evergreen valley high school. that was put out fairly fast and you can see it never really was a threat to the structures. the other one that was much more serious. if you look behind this gate is in that corner there where it's got kind of a pink champagne color. there was some wood debris there that someone, the fire department believes set on fire and ended up going up the wall, up in the ceiling, up against the library. fortunately there is a fire alarm, smoke alarm that did alert the fire department. they got here between 2:30, 2:40

this morning and they were able to get, as i said, both of these fires out. they're suspicious because, a, this happened overnight, and b, there's two fires that are clearly far away from each other. so the arson investigator was already out here as i mentioned, they left here not too long ago. they'll be continuing their investigation at their fire station. they don't have any suspects as of yet. as far as the library's concerned, the damage according to the fire department appears to be superficial. you've got the paint that was scorched, but they were able to get it in time before it went into the building itself. there's light smoke inside, that was about it. as far as classes are concerned, this is not going to have an impact on school because classes here ended last week for the summer. reporting live here in south san jose, bob redell, "today in the bay." a hit-and-run suspect who bolted from the bay area and fled to india after that crime is due in court this morning. sunnyvale police arresting 25-year-old singh at sfo this week. they say he fled to india one day after the crash back in march in which he allegedly ran

over 28-year-old jennifer flores with his car ultimately killing her. flores was the mother of a 6 month old and an 8-year-old boy. a mother who claims her son was abused by a schoolteacher is suing for $1 million. bagdis is named in this suit accused of kicking the 5-year-old autistic boy and withholding food and water from him. she has pleaded not guilty denying misdemeanor charges. she's due back in court at the end of the month. it is 5:33 right now. another bay area city is taking steps to move homeless people off of the streets. berkeley's mayor wants to follow in the footsteps of san francisco's sit/lie ordinance. live in berkeley right now with more on this proposal and how it's working for san francisco. good morning, christie. >> good morning to you, jon. and happy friday. berkeley's mayor says he knows this idea isn't going to change the world, but he thinks it might send a message that the city of berkeley wants to keep

its streets presentable. there are probably some residents, voters here in berkeley who probably won't like this idea. now, we just shot some new video this morning. mayor tom bates says he was motivated by what he sees going on along telegraph avenue where you see young people and their dogs sitting around in numbers asking for spare change of people who walk by. berkeley already has an ordinance that bans lying around on sidewalks at least until 10:00 p.m., but he says when you approach people who are doing this, what they do is instead of moving they sit up. san francisco voters approved a sit/lie ordinance in 2010. but according to a report in "sf weekly," it's not working out that well. most citations seem to go to the same 19 people. in berkeley, this would close that sit-up loophole. bates says he wants it on the november ballot and will bring it to the city council on june 12th. reporting live in berkeley,

christie smith, "today in the bay." 5:34 now, the oakland police department under the gun to provide federal monitors with information on the status of internal investigations. a federal judge has ordered the review of officer-involved shootings. the judge also threatening to find the department if it misses a deadline to turn in its past due investigations. stemming from last year's occupy protest, the department has still not complied with reforms ordered in the wake of a 2003 misconduct case and is still facing the possibility of being placed under federal control. well, just into our newsroom, and it's not good. u.s. jobless numbers released in the past few minutes. business and tech reporter scott mcgrew is in the newsroom looking over the data. and you say it's breathtakingly bad. >> that's exactly right. good morning, marla. talking about 130,000, maybe 150,000 jobs added to the economy, let's take a look at the number, it's 69,000. that is just staggeringly bad. it's almost hard to figure out

what in the world has gone wrong. but when you really drill down, you see the loss in construction jobs. 69,000 jobs added to the u.s. labor force in the month of may, 8.2% on the unemployment. as i always tell you, ignore the unemployment rate, it's really not economically important. it's a statistical guess, and it has so many different variables in it that i think you can safely ignore it. washington won't ignore it, but i think we can. 69,000 is far fewer than the 18-year-olds coming into the economy. they also revise downward the last couple of jobs reports. now, the job situation admittedly is much better here in the bay area. though we did see that number slip last month. and it's very uneven throughout the education level if you are an advanced degree, companies may come looking for you and tracie potts is going to take a closer look at that. but the bottom line, 69,000 jobs just staggeringly bad. jon and marla?

>> that is mind-blowingly bad. >> not a good way to start off the month of june. that'll come intll the political race for the white house, as well. 5:37 right now. let's toss it over to christina loren about a good weekend ahead. >> it is, especially when you subtract 10 to 15 degrees away from today's high. and i wanted to point this. if you're someone attending a graduation, spending any time outdoors, you want to make sure you stay hydrated. it is going to be hot in the peak of the day, the warmest time of the day is between 4:00 and 5:00, you might have had to use your ac yesterday, likely again today. 72 in san francisco, so nice and comfortable at the coast, but, hey, 90 in san jose, 100 degrees in fairfield and gilroy today. much cooler tomorrow and then we bring some rain into the forecast. significant chance for rain over the greater bay area. we'll talk about that coming up. first, mike, is it bad on a friday? >> not bad. it's friday. you know one person not having a good friday.

this person over here, 880 northbound at 5th avenue. the off ramp is open, but it's the slow lane blocked right near the off ramp by a disabled vehicle. we have chp some assistance out there. that may be clearing in the next few minutes. consider this a smooth drive for 580, 880, highway 24 toward the maze. road crews still there, but that's opposite your commute eastbound 80 as you head away from 880 and the interchange. just a lane blocked and no major slowing. some major slowing northbound. the construction zone just cleared in the last few minutes, and we saw some really slow driving north out of san ramon, that cleared in the last few minutes, as well. >> here getting on to the freeway, a lot of folks for antioch westbound, starts the slowing into the 30s now all the way towards summersville and loveridge. shaping up into the city northbound with those headlights toward hospital curve and a split getting on the lower deck, as well. no problems for the bay bridge.

welcome back, everybody, it's 5:41 right now. cases of cancer are expected to spike 75% over the next 18 years. researchers looking at a number of global cancer cases in 2008. they combined that information with data on population size and income expected in 2013. honestly, income? that's interesting. they found there will likely be a surge in breast and prostate cancer especially in less developed countries. well, new this morning, the latest unemployment numbers were just released minutes ago and they are worse than analysts predicted. unemployment rose to 8.2%, but the number that's shocking everyone, only 69,000 jobs added last month. well, there's plenty of talk about the unemployment rate, a new survey reveals there are jobs out there, you just have to be qualified. with a look at the jobs many employers are having a tough time filling. >> good morning. how strange with the new unemployment numbers out showing that a lot of people, millions of americans, even more now seem to be looking for work. we also have new evidence this morning that there are a lot of open jobs out there that employers are having a hard time filling. the manpower group, a staffing group did a survey of 1300 companies, and almost half said they've got jobs that they can't fill because either they don't have enough applicants, the applicants don't have enough experience or they're asking for too much money. the top ten jobs they say are hardest to fill include skilled trades, engineers, i.t., sales reps, people who work in accounting and finance. drivers mechanics, nurses, machinists, and even teachers, and we know a lot of them especially in california out there have been laid off. so with the new unemployment rate of 8.2%. apparently there are jobs out there, but these employers and

the construction, southbound 101 right around story. they have cleared -- there was a little slowing as the crew cleared, but now it's all recovered. they're off the roadway. 880, no major slowing, a little blip coming around 87. and a new incident reported here. northbound 101, another reported at lawrence, they might be the same issue there. sounded like a car went off the roadway. lanes are cleared, but there's a distraction. we'll watch this slowing showing up, we'll see if it sticks around for the south bay. southbound 680 a distraction, as well. so far no slowing there. typical slowing out of the altamont pass, a 15-minute drive easing into the friday commute and no problems through the dublin interchange or heading over toward the castro valley y. and also heading down toward the san mateo bridge for 880. a live look at 880 further north and traffic flows smoothly past the coliseum. the earlier disabled vehicle may
