good blorng morning to you. a high school coach is under arrest accused of sexually assaulting a student. the pictures he posted on an online media site could play a role in his case. a san francisco giants star also under investigation for sexual assault. we'll here from the giants manager about the incident. thousands of bicyclists are at the starting line on the peninsula. they're set to roll out in just a few minutes. we'll try to catch up with them live. this is today in the bay. good morning to you.

looking live at oakland. some fog around the bay area. and cooler temperatures, not just for today, but for the start of your work week. thanks for joining us. i'm kris sanchez, along with meteorologist anthony slaughter. rob is celebrating his wife's graduation with a ph.d. >> way to go, right? here across the bay area this morning, as you mentioned, we're looking at fog and low visibility across the peninsula and along the coastline. today is going to be a carbon copy of what we saw yesterday. chances are if you live along the coast you'll see more fog and clouds. you can see the deck of clouds really stretching from portland all the way dow iont the pacific. that's going to move this way as we head through the day tomorrow. it will enhance cold air and o bring rain this way tomorrow. in the meantime, today across the south bay, mid to upper 70s to lower 80s, from gilroy over to morgan hill. in the east bay, there will be a

few pockets of 80s. mid to upper 70s overall. the cool coastline, 69 in bo dega bay. if you're heading to the giants/cubs game today, it will be cool and we'll see a lot of low clouds with very strong wind gusts. some of our strongest winds will be right in san francisco. highest gusts, 40 miles per hour. >> that will mess up your hair. >> it will. >> thank you very much. not your hair. thanks, anthony. this morning, new information on the sexual assault case on the peninsula involving a swim coach and a 17-year-old girl. the girl is on the swim team, but other members of that team are speaking out with nbc bay area news, defending their coach. he is 25 years old and is now out on bail. the pictures he posted on social media could end up playing a role in the case. >> reporter: police arrested 25-year-old joshua tatro on friday, making it unlikely he'll return as a swim coach at aragon

high. we talked to two girls who said when they heard the accusations that tatro had a sexual relationship with one of their teammates, they didn't want to believe it was true. >> we know josh. he's not a predator. i know he would never intentionally hurt anyone. >> he's a very dedicated coach. everyone looks up to him. everyone feels he's there for us. he'll do anything for us. he's determined to make the best player out of us. and ewanted to dedicate his super to the water polo team. >> but he now faces charges of sexual assault on a minor and lewd acts with a minor. and there are reportedly e-mails, text messages and skype exchanges documenting the relationship between their 17-year-old teammate and tatro. >> she's 17, he's 25. it's not a huge age difference. even though he should have known, because he's the adult, it's so hard, because 18 is so close.

>> reporter: but san mateo police say the law sees it differently. and so does the family of the alleged victim. now reportedly considering a civil lawsuit against the school district. on tatro's myspace page, we found racy photos of him partying and wearing next to nothing. the swimmers say the photos just show his humorous personality. they say even if the charges are true, they don't believe he belongs behind bars. >> he was helping out a girl, and things just -- i think they both just made a mistake, and probably feel sorry that it happened. >> reporter: monty francis, today in the bay. >> we reempd oached out to the representing the victim but did not hear back. tet t tatro is now out of jail. he will likely not be back next year at aragon high. pablo sand a vol met with

sheriff's investigators on friday. they are investigating a woman's claim that she met the giants third baseman while out with a small group in santa cruz. she said later, sandevol sexually assaulted her. his attorney says it was, quote, a consensual personal relationship of a sexual nature that took place on that day. here's manager bruce bochy on the alleged incident. >> we need him here. as far as that other stuff, as you heard in the statement, we're referring all questions to his attorney. but for us, he's got to get ready. and that's why he's down there playing right now. >> sandevol is in the rotation with the san jose giants as he recovers from injury. a 25-year-old man is in jail after a bizarre incident at the

airport. police say robert monroy broke into an airport fire station and stripped his clothes off. witnesses say they later saw monroy walking naked and acting erratically in the parking garage of the airport. eventually he led officers on a foot chase. when he was arrested at terminal "b," which is primarily occupied by southwest airlines, monroy faces several charges including burglary, and indecent exposure. today the florida neighborhood watch volunteer accused of shooting trayvon martin is due back in jail. george zimmerman's bail was revoked after it was claimed he and his wife lied to the court about his finances. he's charged with second-degree murder though he maintains he shot trayvon martin in self-defense. some voters are getting an early start on the june primary which is still a few days away. voting offices throughout the nine bay area counties will be open today through 3:00 this

afternoon. if you don't vote today, you will have to wait until tuesday, which is, of course, election day. county supervisors are expected to green light a ballot measure which would raise the sales tax by a full cent. the county wants to use the extra funds to help pay for transportation projects, which the state says it cannot afford. if approved by voters, that measure would raise nearly $8 billion over a 30-year period. contra costa county leaders, less than 40% of their voters there are expected to take part. election officials blame a lack of presidential primary contests for either party and hot-button ballot measures. this will be the first election of representatives after the district was redrawn from the latest census numbers. in santa clara county, drop-off boxes are located at eastridge mall, the other in

morgan hill. you can also stop by the mccarthy ridge market in milpitas. the boxes will be available until 3:00 this afternoon and then once again on election day. this morning, dozens of guns are off oakland city streets. in an effort to crack down on violent crimes, police made a deal with gun owners, turn in your weapon for exchange for a $100 gift card, no questions asked. the offer was part of the 100% strong peace event. a fair and rally was also part of yesterday's event, and people who have had loved ones killed in violence marched as well. >> we've had children, infants, you know, just in the line of gunfire, haven't even had a chance to even grow up. >> organizers of the event wanted to send a message to the community to get rid of the guns that are killing the city's youth.

this is "today in the bay." good morning to you. oh, boy, it is foggy to start the day in san francisco. if it's laundry day, make sure you wash your cold-weather stuff first, because you'll need it to start the week. today researchers will present what could be a break-through in the fight against breast cancer. researchers at duke university say they successfully dropped the first so-called smart bomb on breast cancer. they will present their research at a conference today. the secret weapon? they say a new chemotherapy drug called tdm-1. that drug binds to breast cancer cells while leaving healthy cells alone, basically killing the cancer without ruining the patient's quality of life. >> i have not lost my hair or

this is "today in the bay." we are looking live at a very pretty, but ominous picture of san jose. i went to a little graduation party yesterday. i'm glad it was yesterday and not today, because anthony slaughter said today is going to be chillier than yesterday. >> i thought you were going with the whole rob ph.d. thing. his wife got her ph.d. yesterday. i'm anthony slaughter filling in for rob this morning. we are tracking some very low clouds, as you saw earlier. and also, fog at the coast. so it is going to influence our high temperatures later on.

just a few degrees cooler. but nothing as far as major cooling. that happens tomorrow. san jose, you're at 55 degrees. santa cruz, got up to 75 yesterday. you're at 53 to start the day here today. morning patchy fog, just as you saw looking out on the sky cam. yesterday, what we saw, it's going to be a repeat of what we saw yesterday. yesterday, after about 1:00, if you lived inland, you can expect to be done with the fog. coastline, low clouds and fog all day long. even by this evening, that's when we will start to feel the first rain drops fall down toward san francisco. we've got cold weather ahead. and then we've got warm weather. cold, you've got a treat monday and tuesday. you can see this big spin in our satellite. this is the u.s./canadian border

stretching all the way up into alaska. that's how large this area of low pressure is. it's taking a dive south. in fact, we've been under the influence of high pressure for the past week or so. here comes an area of low pressure. this is actually going to be a cold low, cold enough to produce some snow in the higher elevations. believe it or not. at the coastline, we'll see the rain move in. tonight, that's going to spread inland tomorrow. and again with that rain, we're talking about a very cold blast of air. so tomorrow morning, this is right around rush hour, 6:00, you'll notice the showers with us. they move into the east bay by the time we get toward the afternoon hours. and then we dry out tomorrow evening, momentarily. now, tuesday, this system will still be with us a little bit. so there will be a few lingering showers. computer modeling going back and forth between where the showers will be on tuesday. but overall, it does look like we'll still be seeing some showers on tuesday. and as i mentioned, yeah, we're also going to see some snow out of this. believe it or not. if you've got time off, maybe

want to head up to tahoe, expecting 1 to 3 inches of snow right around the higher elevations, up towards tahoe. a mild day across the south bay. mid-70s from san jose to morgan hill. a few pockets of 80s, especially over towards livermore. the closer you get to the bay, that's where the cooler numbers will be. oakland 65. pacifica, only at 60 today. again, that onshore breeze really going to cool us off. by tomorrow, look at this. 64 degrees for our highs tomorrow. at the coast, we're going to be in the 50s. with that very strong wind, it's going to feel like we're in the 40s tomorrow. kris, if today is laundry day, pull out the hoodies, get the jackets ready. livermore and gilroy were in the 90s just two days ago. so tomorrow they're going to be in the 60s. major change coming. >> i don't put the winter clothes away too fast. >> i don't either. >> thank you very much, anthony.

thousands of people decked out in their finest, to brave the windy cold weather in san francisco for music and fund-raising. black and white ball was in full swing until about 1:30 this morning. kimberly terry had a ball. >> reporter: the air was filled with music. it went until 1:00 a.m. paul simon, the wall flowers and drifters. proceeds from the san francisco symphony's black and white ball go to the organization's educational and community programs which serve tens of thousands of kids in northern california. >> well, we think music changes children's lives. it shows them another avenue, another purpose. it helps develop persistence, tenacity, and attention to detail. and we think that music is a

this is "today in the bay." it is estimated some 5 million people around the world are living with lupus, and each year 16,000 new cases are reported just in the united states. next sunday, the 18th annual 5k run and walk for lupus steps off. the northern california lupus foundation, talking about the event. i think as a lot of these drug commercials come up, we hear about diseases that don't maybe affect us personally. can you explain to us what lupus is, and who gets it? >> yes. lupus is an autoimmune disease which can cause severe pain and inflammation. a lot of symptoms. it can affect internal organs of

the body, including the kidneys, the lungs, the heart, the brain. and the reason it's called an autoimmune disease, because unlike many other diseases and infections, where it is caused by viruses and bacteria, lupus is caused by our own immune system. >> something just short-sir kugts in there. >> yes. it gets overactive and attacks our own cells which causes a host of health problems. >> now, this is a disease that could strike somebody who is in the prime of their life, and for much of their life, they look completely normal. but what are the effects u the symptoms when they are having a flare-up, or whatever the right terminology is? >> the symptoms of lupus are pretty similar to many other symptoms of other diseases. that's why it's very difficult, even for medical providers, to diagnose lupus. it can start with a fever,

inflammation, joint pain, fatigue. but really, in order to be diagnosed with lupus, someone has to have 4 of 11 criteria that doctors will be looking at. the severe part of lupus is the effect on internal organs. >> what is the quality of life for somebody who has lupus? >> right now there's no cure for lupus, but there are drugs that can treat the symptoms of lupus. so it's important for people who have been dpged with lupus to go to the doctor and follow the doctor are's advice and medication. it's also important to avoid ex term conditions that may cause lupus to flare up. like sun exposure and stress and things like that. early last year, the fda approved the first lupus drug in almost 50 years. >> wow. >> it took like decades before a new drug could be prescribed for

lupus patients. believe it or not, the first lupus drug approved by the fda years ago was aspirin. >> you are serious about trying to find a cure. and develop more drugs to help people live with this disease. until there is a cure. >> right. >> tell us a little bit about the run and walk. >> yes. this is the 18th year that the lupus foundation of northern california has been sponsoring the 5k run and walk for lupus. and for this year, it's going to be held this coming sunday, june 10th, at 9:00 in the morning. and it will be at the west valley college in saratoga. and so people can sign up on the day of the -- we'll have pre-registrations already, but people can sign up on the day of the event. this is one of the biggest fund-raisers to help raise funds for our year-around programs. but it's also our venue to promote greater public awareness about this little-known disease. >> it is something that almost anybody, it could strike almost anybody.

a woman said she was sexually assaulted at a resort. sources say the woman told police she was too intoxicated to give her consent. pablo sandoval's attorney said, quote, it was a consensual personal relationship of a sexual nature that took place on that day, end quote. here's manager bruce bochy on the alleged incident. >> we need him here. and as far as that other stuff, as you've heard the statement, we're referring all questions to his attorney. but, you know, for us, he's got to get ready. and that's why he's down there playing right now. >> pablo sandoval is not in the rotation as he recovers from injuries. he's playing with the san jose giants. an overnight drive-by shooting leaves one man dead, three other people injured. it happened just after 8:00 last night at the crest ranch park in north vallejo. police believe at least one

person from inside the car opened fire at the group. a 57-year-old man died from his injuries after he was taken to a hospital. two others, a woman and a teenage boy, remain in critical condition. another man was treated for an arm injury. the suspects were last seen driving away in a dark-colored sedan. the peninsula remembers the passing of one of their longtime leaders. memorial services will be held today for john lee. the 81-year-old was a three-time mayor of san mateo, also served on the city council for 13 years. lee died in early may after a battle with cancer. colleagues praised lee's passion for the city, and the way that he touched so many lives. services will be held this afternoon at the san mateo county event center. it was a somber anniversary for firefighters in san francisco. people gathered at walter haas

park to pay tribute. one year ago they died in a flashover while responding to a house fire in the city's diamond heights neighborhood. yesterday station 26 dedicated a memorial garden in their honor. >> very heart-warming to see the outpouring from the community. >> the city's fire chief says her department has learned lessons from their deaths, and continues to develop new policies and strategies to make sure it doesn't happen again. after 75 years, united airlines is departing oakland international airport for good. united airlines will fly out of the airport for the last time, right now, united only has 11 weekly flights to denver serving 2% of the airport's passengers. a united spokeswoman said that's just not enough to maintain service there. travelers who are booked on flights between oakland and denver are now being offered other united flights or refunds. a traffic note if you are

going to be by san francisco's ocean beach this week. southbound lanes of the great highway from lincolnway to slope boulevard will be closed tomorrow through friday. high winds are causing this shutdown. each year during the late spring and early summer, strong gusts build up sand along the roadway and crews have to clear out the sand, and that makes it unsafe for drivers. northbound lanes will be open to traffic. thousands of bicyclists are on their way to help find a cure for a deadly disease which has hit the bay area especially hard. rlier this morning they took off from the cow palace as part of the aids life cycle bike ride. they will pedal along highway 1 before heading to santa cruz county for the first leg of their trip. we're looking at pictures from the takeoff this morning from the cow palace staging ground. organizers are hoping to raise $11 million for hiv and aids research. it says that the event is the largest fund-raiser in the fight against hiv and aids.

offers something for just about everyone in the bay area. some of the most interesting races we bring in, larry gersten. what do you see as the most interesting races at the state and local level? >> if you start locally, measure "b" right here in san jose is amazing. no question about it. what you'll see is the voters, in the third largest city in california, taking on this issue of pension reform. look, that's important for a couple of reasons. number one, san jose is the largest -- third largest city in the state. with that, you've got people across the state and across the nation, think "wall street journal" article on this, right here in san jose, just yesterday. so everybody is watching to see what the voters are going to say. number two, the candidates themselves, local candidates, statewide candidates, even the senate state candidates are

going for it. this is a big issue. it's going to have ripples all across the state and across the country. >> our investigative unit did a big story on this, and how the numbers weren't exactly perfect. the issue remains that perhaps there should be pension reform. but when you use numbers that may not add up, i mean, is that going to affect what's going to happen? >> you know, they say, we're for pension reform, but let's use surgical laser rather than a cleaver. we're lopping off everything, treating everybody the same way. opponents say we have not paid attention to this issue, it's eting us up. everybody's galvanized on this issue. it's rippled through the whole state and to some degree the country. >> statewide there are going to be issues that will get a lot of people talking. i suspect one of them is going to be prop 29. >> prop 29 is the big one. there's only two this time. wait until november. get a good night's sleep.

we'll have about 20 of them in november. right now it's prop 29. prop 29, tobacco taxes raised by $1 a pack. that will bring in revenues of about $800 million annually. those revenues are going to be dedicated to cancer research. the most recent figures show that those against proposition 29 have spent $47 million. those for proposition 29 have spent $4 million. money speaks quite often when we talk about propositions. you know, a few months ago, it was winning 2 to 1, now it could go either way. the election is truly up for grabs. the no folks are basically tobacco interests. the folks who are yes, remember lance armstrong, are the health care folks. california ranks 33rd in tobacco taxes. if this is passed, the state

will go up to 16th. let me tell you something, it's a cliff-hanger right now. >> i don't know how people can afford to smoke with all the taxes on cigarettes. what else should we be watching for on tuesday? i know what i'll be watching for, but what will you be watching? >> i think we want to pay close attention to the 15th congressional district. that is a juicy race. you've got the 40-year incumbent, not 40-year-old, 40-year incumbent. pete stark, legendary liberal icon, if you will. so many decades now. he has a very serious challenge from a young democrat by the name of eric swalwell. if there's an upset anywhere in the bay area, it will be right there. we also want to get a glimpse of the public mood when it comes to taxes. we've got 22 localities, local governments, counties and cities, asking the voters to raise either sales taxes or property taxes. then we've got another 12 school districts which are asking the voters to pass a combined $1.3

billion in construction bonds. and these, and all races for that matter, turnout becomes the critical factor. the more turnout there is, the higher the percentages, the more likely it is you're going to see some of these measures pass. the lower the turnout, the more conservative turnout, they also vote. liberals and the independents don't come out as often. the more likely it is these m h measures will fail. >> so just a reminder, we talked about it earlier in the newscast, election day is on tuesday. if you want to vote in person. but you can drop off your ballots today through 3:00. a couple of locations, check with your local governments. >> you know what, just on that note, 60% of all the voters will have voted before election day. >> that's amazing. >> isn't that something? >> does that mean we don't have to stay as late on election night? >> no. >> we'll be here until midnight, 2:00 in the morning.

flow is with us. it is going to continue to push the clouds on in. expect to see a little drizzle this evening. if you're headed out right now to church or having fun in town, throw the umbrella in the car with you so you have it with you later on this evening. tomorrow the rain moves inland, so everybody, make sure you have a heads-up and grab the umbrellas. 52 in san francisco. mild, sunnyvale right now. the fog is with us right along the coast. mainly because we've got the calm winds in place for the time being. overnight, all that humidity was allowed to settle down on top of the city. now that's just allowing it to sit there. winds will pick up later on. the fog and drizzle will be with us along the coast most of the day. tonight, that's when the shower activity will start. and it's going to linger through the day tomorrow, especially inland. the big area of low pressure spinning across the gulf of alaska. that's going to dive southward.

it's going to be cold, so, yeah, we've got cold air moving in place. we also have rain starting to move across the area as early as tonight in the city and all of that will spread eastward as we head through the day tomorrow. also comes very strong wind gusts. our winds will start to gust up to 40 miles per hour this afternoon and may see gusts higher than that tomorrow morning. 7:00 tomorrow morning, the rain moves to the east bay by tomorrow afternoon. we're pretty much done with it until about tuesday morning with a few spotty showers. look at this, impressive rainfall amounts. actually all those brown hills you see in the south bay, may actually start to see flowers and it may start to turn green. how about that. 72 in redwood city today. 75 in san jose. san francisco will be cool at 64 with the low clouds. tomorrow, 64 will be the highest temperature, as opposed to today, 82.

your morning commute tomorrow. a partial lunar eclipse will begin just after 2:00 tomorrow morning. this happens when the moon passes behind the earth and blocks the sun's rays. the observatory will be remain open for the public tonight. the eclipse will be visible for several hours. you need to plan on that for your commute so you're not driving tired. another rare sight from the skies. beginning tuesday, stargazers will have an opportunity to watch the planet venus as it passes in front of the sun. the transit will be visible throughout western north america for a few days, but you might want to hurry. the next time you'll see this event again will be in 2117. >> a little astronomy for you. thank you so much for making us a part of your morning. we'll have more local news for you tonight at 5:00, 6:00 and 11:00. have a fantastic day. we'll see you very soon. here you go little man.
