♪ new this morning, the bay area is getting its first new ferry service in nearly two decades. it's leaving from the east bay in just a couple of hours. i'll tell you where it's going coming up in a live report. a giants player getting attention for his hand surgery now making headlines for a different reason. what pablo is saying about the sexual assault allegation against him. plus an eventful week for astronomy. and then moon shining on the golden gate bridge right now with some of those low-hanging clouds make a little foggy out there. it is monday, june 4th, "today in the bay."

good monday morning, everybody, the time now is almost 4:31. i'm jon kelley, and look who's back. >> hello. i'm laura garcia-cannon. let's check that forecast. good monday morning, how are you, christina? >> better now that you're back. happy to have you with us this morning. grab your umbrella out the front door because we've got showers on the radar. but that front is still not close enough to obstruct your vision of a very rare overnight eclipse. still partially taking place out there. we are expecting showers in the bay area. we'll take you through your full forecast. a warm week ahead, first, let's check your drive with mike. >> yeah, you can look and try to catch part of that eclipse, but focus on the roads, as well, because we have this crossing the water. westbound 580, we do have a disabled vehicle. bridge crews going to make quick work of that. and north bay looking pretty good as far as the speeds go.

as well as the golden gate bridge as jon told you about. glow to those lights, no problems for visibility. watch it, the weather is changing today. plus these bridges, not the only waves over the water. >> thank you very much. >> you're right, mike. there's a new ferry service launching in the bay area this morning. >> commuters in the east bay and south san francisco will all benefit. christie smith live in oakland for the perk for the first riders this week. good morning. >> good morning to you, laura. this is the first ferry service in the bay area since 1992, and more of a step forward toward creating a network of ferry services throughout the bay area. this one running between alameda and oakland square. another alternative to riding b.a.r.t., muni, caltrain, or driving across the bay bridge. rides to and from alameda are expected to take about 50 minutes. about 40 minutes each morning.

now the ferry service, the terminal in south san francisco cost about $26 million to build and some major employers over there will offer shuttles. in fact, nine companies will offer shuttles for riders who get off there. there are three morning departures from the east bay and two return trips back to the east bay in the evening. one-way trip will cost you about $7. they take cash, credit, or clipper cards all okay. first boat leaves alameda at 6:25 this morning, here in oakland at 6:40. live in oakland, christie smith, "today in the bay." this morning, still no charges, but plenty of questions directed at pablo sandoval. a woman claims he sexually assaulted her at a beach resort friday morning. he's been questioned by investigators, but has not been arrested. this weekend, he told us he's not worried what will come out of the investigation.

he's just focused on recovering from surgery and doing his job. >> i want to get back to the team, help with winning. i want to come back and help the team win. >> his attorney insists the sexual encounter between sandoval and the woman was consensual. this all happened at a crest ranch park in north vallejo saturday night. police say a man drove into that park and opened fire on a group of people. a 57-year-old man was killed, a 35-year-old man was shot in the arm. he is expected to survive. a 17-year-old right now listed in critical condition along with a 67-year-old woman. >> our first responding officers did speak with the victims. at this point, we can't go into too much detail about what the victims told us. >> the victims' identities have not been released. not sure who the gunman was targeting.

nearly four years after a triple shooting that killed a san francisco father and his two sons, that convicted killer will learn his fate today. edwin ramos will be sentenced. ramos is a known gang member, and prosecutors say the killings were a case of mistaken identity. ramos facing a maximum sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. go to the polls in california tomorrow for primary elections. the survey by the public policy institute of california say only 17% of voters approve of the job the legislature is doing. 88% believe much of the money is being wasted. governor jerry brown recently announced california's budget deficit had ballooned to $16 billion. stay with nbc bay area for coverage of tuesday's primary. we'll bring you live reports up to and beyond election day. you can also read more about the candidates and the issues on our website, nbcbayarea.com. it is a final boarding call

in oakland for united airlines. united ending its service over the weekend. the airline has flown into oakland for 75 years has seen the passenger rates drop to just 1.4% of airport customers recently. that's not good. the united spokesman says the airline will work with customers who have had flights booked out of oakland to either rebook them or provide those passengers with a refund. been around this neck of the woods for a while, i need to be updated when it comes to the forecast. >> well, you were at the happiest place on earth. it's not going to look nearly as good no matter what the forecast holds. good morning. welcome back, laura. it's kind of mild out there. we have showers on the way. and showers are going to take place over the entire bay area. you want to grab your umbrella. it's interesting this morning, we're starting out mild. 60 degrees just about everywhere. 59 in sunnyvale, san mateo and san francisco. and your temperatures are going

to start to drop off. highs today are only going to break into the 70s. and i'm talking about the low 70s. even the warmest cities across the bay. we're not expecting our first significant rain showers here until about 10:00 a.m. i'll time that system out to your doorstep. and then the warm-up is on. so we'll talk all about that 4:37. let's check your drive on a back to work monday. >> we'll get back away from this. this is a debris reported eastbound 580, heading away from the maze and the toll plaza toward the freeway, highway 13, past 35 is where we have the location from chp. sounds like some debris. we don't know exactly what. some sort of road hazard in the lane. chp will check it out and we'll let you know if they have to do any rolling traffic brakes. likely if there's anything of any size they have to remove. we have this road crew, as well, northbound 13 heading over towards 24, we have a crew there, as well, from 24 on to southbound 13, as well.

possibly more in a noncommute direction. watch for those posted detours in place. east shore freeway moves smoothly, down through berkeley and emeryville, and a live look further south. a nice easy drive for the nimitz. and that new service the alameda and oakland stations. so keep that in mind, as well. she'll tell you more about that coming up. back to you. it's 4:38 right now. thousands of people taking part in the world's largest hiv/aids fundraiser this week. they were pumped up and ready to go. the life cycle bike ride kick e off at the cal palace. the san francisco area to los angeles. the 545-mile ride raises money and awareness in the fight against hiv and aids. even have the hats going. >> mini hats. >> this year's race is expected

to raise more than $11 million. the riders traveled from san francisco to santa cruz yesterday. today's leg runs from santa cruz to king city. ultimately, they will make stops in eight cities ending up in l.a. on saturday. with rugger legs. if you haven't gotten outside this morning, we suggest go do it now or go to a window or something. there's still time to catch a glimpse of a lunar eclipse. a lunar eclipse happens when the moon passes through the earth's shadow. that shadow on the moon. the eclipse will finish up around 5:00 a.m. and we have another unusual event in the skies happening tomorrow afternoon. this is the last chance to see the transit of venus this century. so if you don't catch this one, you know, you might have to wait a while. did you see that? starting just after 3:00 on tuesday. >> all right. the lunar eclipse happens -- i'm

an unarmed florida teenager's behind bars again this morning. george zimmerman turned himself into sheriff deputies this weekend after a judge revoked his bond. prosecutors say zimmerman lied about having no money to pay for bail during his initial bond hearing. he had collected thousands of dollars in donations through a website. zimmerman's attorney says he will push for a new bail agreement. >> why wouldn't they go to me the first day we discussed. >> zimmerman is facing trial for second-degree murder in the death of teenager trayvon martin in february. zimmerman claims he shot the teen in self-defense. this morning, two pilots are dead after their air tanker crashed while fighting wildfires along the nevada/utah line. so far, no word on the exact cause of the crash, but another helicopter crew that witnessed it told ground crews, "it didn't look good." the pilots were fighting a

5,000-acre wildfire that started burning friday night after a lightning strike in eastern nevada. also sunday afternoon, the crew of another tanker had to land belly down after it was unable to lower the landing gear. crews flew the plane for 90 minutes before making that emergency landing. both crew members walked away without injury. >> that is amazing. well, friday's ugly unemployment report setting the stage for a rough start on wall street. unemployment ticking up to 8.2%. now, president obama blaming congress for stalling his jobs plan. on the other side, republicans say the president is trying but his policies just aren't working. >> never even ran a corner store, and i think it shows in the way he's handling the economy. >> and the markets did not react well to those latest jobs reports. overseas markets have already taken a beating today. and for a check of the markets and the rest of your news before the bell, we turn it

over to kayla tausche. good morning. >> good morning, jon. well, you'd think that futures would be lower for the stock market today, but they are trending slightly higher, even though we saw a dismal trade in asia this morning. off the lows in the red this morning, but the global markets do continue to react to that friday jobs report showing the economy added only 69,000 jobs last month. that number is the fewest in over a year. europe is also in close focus. leaders continuing to debate how to keep the region's debt crisis from spreading. moving over to china, china showing its economy may be slowing. investors are bracing for this global slowdown. we saw asia fall overnight. europe is mixed right now, although london is closed for a holiday. of course the queen's diamond jubilee. we get data on factory orders this morning. investors will be watching. also the fed this week, chairman ben bernanke testifies before congress on thursday. the dow plunging 274 points, or

2.2% friday to 12,118 points. but right now, the dow looks like it would open down -- changing to the upside right now and only just to the green about .5%. the nasdaq losing 79. the worst of any indices down 2.8%. also samsung planning a major u.s. launch for the newest smartphone. the galaxy s3, it is lighter and thinner and a 4.8 inch screen. it'll be available later this month from at&t, sprint, verizon, t-mobile and u.s. cellular. if you're interested it starts at $199. definitely cheaper than an iphone, but a lot of people are still going to be addicted. back to you. >> you got that right. thank you very much. >> seems like phones are getting bigger again. >> yeah. hello. >> can you hear me? on a tablet. what about the forecast? >> you've got to hold it with a flat hand.

>> yeah, make sure those windshield wipers are ready to go. and good news is, if you haven't watched your car, you're going to get a free car wash today. the front headed toward us. we're still on the warm side of this front, so temperatures are close to 60 degrees right now. as we see this front pull through, we're going to see cold air trail behind it. everywhere, we'll see uniform temperatures with cool air moving into the bay area. so this morning, it's actually kind of mild out there and you still have time before the showers arrive to get outdoor activities taken care of. as i widen out for you, you can see this is a substantial front, especially for this time of the year. the core is going to cross to our north. we're talking about the potential for some light showers for the first part of the day starting to lighten up through this evening. i wanted to point out because we're still getting clearing in our skies before those clouds start to thicken up. you can still act fast and catch that partial lunar eclipse. really cool out there before

welcome back, everyone, we're talking about that eclipse happening overnight. gives you kind of a glimpse of it between the clouds this morning. it's rare and going away rather quickly. at about 5:00 this morning. >> the dark shadows. >> yeah. all right, 4:54 right now. the summer olympics in london just around the corner, but team usa without one of the biggest stars, that's gymnast shawn johnson announcing she's retiring at the ripe old age of 20. johnson had a gold medal performance and added three more silvers at the beijing games in 2008. after that, she decided to take a little time off as she should to enjoy her success. but then in 2010, away from
