quake and bring you updates as soon as possible. charges have not yet been filed against a san francisco giants star being investigated for an alleged sexual assault. "today in the bay's" marla tellez is live with an update on this investigation that's ongoing right now. marla, good morning. >> reporter: jon, good morning, that player under investigation is pablo sandoval is playing here with the san jose giants while he rehabs a hand injury. he faces a possible sexual assault case. the alleged incident happened friday morning at a beach resort where he was staying. a woman claims sandoval sexually assaulted her. and deputies say the two met thursday night in santa cruz. and his attorney says the sexual encounter was consensual. our colleagues at comcast sports net bay area interviewed the 25-year-old baseman who would not directly comment on these allegations.

>> with that situation off the field, are you scared? >> no. i'm thinking right now, playing my game, getting back to fit. >> not scared at all? >> reporter: sandoval has been questioned by detectives and officials say he's fully cooperating. no charges have been filed against pablo, but that could change pending the investigation. i have a call into the sheriff's department this morning, i am waiting to hear back. as for sandoval, he and the san jose giants are in stockton tonight for a 7:05 game. live in san jose, "today in the bay." 5:02 right now. vallejo police searching for a gunman who killed one man and injured three others at a barbecue this weekend. happened at crest ranch park. police say a man drove into the park and opened fire on a group of people. 57-year-old man was killed, 35-year-old man was shot in the

arm, but is expected to survive. a 17-year-old is listed in critical condition along with a 67-year-old woman. >> now, our first responding officers did speak with the victims, but at this point we can't go into too much detail about what the victims have told us. >> the victims' identities have not been revealed. at this point, investigators are not sure who the gunman was targeting. and this morning, the florida neighborhood watch volunteer accused of killing trayvon martin is back in jail. two days after a judge revoked his bond saying zimmerman and his wife lied to the court about their finances. now the judge used this information to set zimmerman's bail. zimmerman's lawyer says he will be asking for a new bond hearing. the 28-year-old being charged with second-degree murder. and coming up at 5:40 in a live report, exactly how much money did zimmerman have in that paypal account he recently set up and the legal hot water his wife may be facing. new this morning, there is

another option to get you across the bay this morning. new ferry routes starts between the peninsula, oakland, and alameda. live in oakland where folks are pretty excited about the new route. good morning. >> good morning to you. yeah, this is the first new ferry line in the bay area since 1992. so it's been a long time coming. and really the next step in creating more of a network of ferries throughout the bay area. there are two east bay stops, including where we are here oakland, jacqueline, and square from south san francisco. from oakland to and from san francisco should take you about 40 minutes, alameda, 50 minutes, initially two 140-seat boats will make the trip. the stop is oyster point. that is a new terminal paid for with federal, state, and local funds. now, it's unclear how many riders will be on this initially. but the hope is to give about 100,000 at least during the first year. with the south san francisco service started, the next plan is to try to bring ferry service

to treasure island with other cities to follow. adults, $7, during the first week, though, it might be fun to check it out because rides are free while they work the bugs out. reporting live in oakland, christie smith, "today in the bay." well, it is official. a final boarding call in oakland for united airlines. united ending flight service at oakland international airport over the weekend. the airline has flown into oakland for about 75 years, but seen the passenger rates drop to just 1.4% of airport customers recently. a united spokesman says the airline will be working with customers who had flights booked out of oakland to either rebook them or provide them with refunds. >> get your walking shoes ready. there'll be plenty of taxies in san francisco today, but not many for hire. starting at noon, caravans of cabs from city hall to an undisclosed location for an iconic photo opportunity. cabbies are required to accept

credit cards because the fees many drivers are plastic carrying passengers. the new plan would cap the amount of money cab companies charge drivers for processing transactions to just 3.5%. and right now that fee is at 5%. meanwhile, muni is preparing to reopen its busy line this morning. the route that runs from ocean beach to the caltrain station scheduled to resume service at 5:00 a.m. the line has been shut down for improvements as we've been telling you. and this morning, southbound lanes of the great highway in san francisco will be shut down through the week for sand removal. a little heads up on that one. lincoln way and sloat closed through friday afternoon. commuters being asked to use sunset boulevard as an alternate route. every year this happens, crews removing sand which has piled up on the walking path between the highway and ocean beach.

it's 5:06 right now. and it is a rare cosmic event of treats this week. the space spectacular began this morning with a partial lunar eclipse. it'll be followed tomorrow with the transit of venus across the sun. good morning, bob. >> reporter: it was a nice little overnight party here at the observation deck. about 30 to 40 people were here, they were looking through the video screen that's attacked to the telescope set up by this astronomer right here. let's talk about the lunar eclipse tonight. that is not a terribly unusual event. anything significant, though, about this? i guess more of a run of the mill celestial event? >> well, for lunar eclipses, this is probably the last lunar eclipse we'll get to see the earth's shadow cover the moon until 2014. >> so the last one for a while, and it's a partial one. tomorrow, roughly 3:00 in the

afternoon to sunset. you need special glasses to observe this. but if you have the glasses, what will you see? >> starting a little after 3:00 in the afternoon, you'll start to see a little tiny dot make an appearance on the face of the sun. is and very slowly over the course of several hours, you'll see it slowly drift from the edge across the face of the sun. >> what are you going to learn or observe about as an astronomer? >> for us, it's an opportunity to see a special rare alignment of the planets in our lifetime. but you're also getting an opportunity to see something that astronomers absolutely look for in other stars. actually trying to detect the presence of a planet moving in front of its parent star. >> fascinating. thank you very much. remember, do not look directly into the sun unless you have those special glasses, or if you're like me, a welders

still, though, about three or four hours away from getting our first showers at the coast, sonoma county, cool conditions behind it. we'll see the cold air settle in through the second half of the day. you'll notice your temperatures decreasing even in the heat of the day, temperatures only breaking into the 60s. and you can see here from the future cast, stop the clock at 10:00 a.m. that's where we're expecting the bulk of the moisture to come in. then we'll see light showers throughout the remainder of the day. but these are your highs. 62 in san jose, 58 in san francisco, and 68 degrees in livermore. a nice warm day ahead as we head through tomorrow. shower activity early, but clearing out nicely and then the we'll talk about that first. let's talk about your drive back to work monday. >> looks like some folks can't wait to get on the road. highway 4, we know that's most of us. some slowing. a little bit unusual. popped up 15 minutes ago. we see that 54 over on the right. typically what we see at the el

street sensor. no incidents to report. chp has no updates on that. that's, i guess, good news. that's an adjustment here. livermore, 580, 14-minute drive. the volume still pretty manageable at the limit all the way through livermore and pleasanton. over the last few minutes, slowing northbound 680 through dublin into san ramon. looks like the sensors sorting themselves out and calming down. no construction crews, little slowing that popped up. back to you. >> appreciate it. well, this week, thousands of bicyclists hitting the road for the world's largest hiv/aids fundraiser. nearly 3,000 people taking part in the bike ride from the bay area down to l.a. the 545-mile ride will raise money and awareness in the fight against aids and hiv. this year's race expected to raise more than $11 million. nice work out there. nice hat. i think it slunk in the dryer. today's leg of the race will begin in santa cruz and heads south in king city.

of cricket a gay sport. coming under fire from the gay and lesbian alliance against defamation and other groups after his comments on friday on a late night talk show. where he described the pitch in cricket as unmanly and gay. in a blog now, a blog post, he writes, as an actor, he has many friends that are gay and he should've known better. a sex and the city star is in a new ad campaign for president obama. the 32nd spot features sarah jessica parker. she's holding a raffle for a private dinner with the president and first lady. it was shown during sunday night's mtv movie awards. republicans are criticizing the ad as being out of touch in light of the economy. okay. go ahead and call this one a little investment in your future. this morning, yeah, you have a chance to bid on lunch with billionaire warren buffett. and trust us, the tab on this one will likely be the most expensive meal of your entire life. bidding already underway on ebay

now, lots of reasons for lower prices. among them, all the bad economic news we've had lately. you don't think greece affects you? greece affects you. it affects you in a good way. we also found gas at the station near castro and market in san francisco at $3.99. in oakland, over at the quick stop on basco road and north front, $3.99, as well. facebook about to get a lot tweenier. soon they can stop hiding that fact. >> yeah, well, they can stop hiding it, but they will have a little bit more supervision there. facebook is reportedly developing technology to let kids under the age of 13 join the site. with parental supervisor. the "wall street journal" says facebook may link kids accounts to their parents and the parents can decide whom they friend and what apps they use.

and may charge parents for games their children use. that could get racked up pretty quickly. our futures are a bit higher today, off the lows of the morning. global markets continuing to react to friday's disappointing u.s. jobs report. that's the fewest in a year. europe also in focus as leaders continue to debate how to keep the region's debt crisis from spreading. china stating its economy may be slowing. asian markets fell overnight, europe is mixed although london is closed for that jubilee. data on factory orders this morning, and of course, investors will be closely watching the fed this week. chairman ben bernanke testifying before congress on thursday. the dow was plunging 274 points or 2.2% friday to 1,118 points, the nasdaq losing 2.8% to 2,747, the worst-performing numbers. even though futures were extremely low this morning, the market appears to be shrugging

off this bad news. back to you. >> thank you. a bit of controversy, as well, over this weekend over a "new york times" article about women in technology. let's go ahead and not talk about kleiner perkins just yet. it starts men invented the internet. it's got a lot of people blogging and talking, which is probably his intention. the context here is indeed that sexual harassment lawsuit against kleiner perkins. a junior partner there says she was told not to complain after she had an intimate relationship with a supervisor, one she said was unwanted. this venture capital firm denies the allegations after learning of the relationship. but the point of the article which got a bit obscured by the controversial first line, regardless of who is writing the lawsuit, the court will figure that out. there's still a lot to talk about when it comes to gender equality in high-tech. >> which is interesting. you talk about glass ceilings

being broken. >> well, again, conversation hopefully sparking that and getting going in the right direction. christina loren, we've had a lot of sunshine leading up to this, but sounds like some rain is on the way. >> rain is on the way, but chances are your car needs that rain. the car wash here in the bay area today. we've got a good-looking day shaping up. as we head throughout the morning hours, it's really mild. and the good news about this rain is this time of year our air quality tends to suffer because we don't get any significant moisture to clean it out. so today, we are going to get that moisture we so need. tomorrow morning waking up with good air quality. it has been a while since we've had good showers. 58 in san mateo and 58 degrees in san francisco. the microclimates not a factor this morning. everywhere close to 60 degrees, and we're only headed toward maybe a five-degree spike in your temperature throughout the day today. it's not going to be that warm. we're still on the mild side of that system. the cold air resides behind it. after we get those showers, then we'll get a cold blast of air.

that's going to keep your temperatures in the 60s today. much cooler than the seasonal averages. then tomorrow, you can breathe it in, open up the windows, nice day shaping up. if you're getting ready to leave that front door right now, you're going to get the best drive of the morning. 9:00 a.m., steady showers along the peninsula and the north bay will intensify. the greater bay area getting nice and wet. then we're going to clear you out just in time for 7:00 p.m. and the evening commute. things will really be on the mild side compared to what we're expecting through your mid-morning hours. 62 degrees in fremont, 62 in san jose, and here it is, your seven-day outlook, looking good. 78 degrees, climbing a touch for tomorrow, it'll take a day for the cold air to mix out and wednesday through friday, we stay nice and comfortable in the upper 70s and low 80s. let's check your drive with mike. all right, well, we're looking at dry roads obviously. but 680, we had the slowing. completely cleared from our sensors now. looks like the traffic flow made these things move as the delays

good morning, everybody, the time now is 5:30, i'm jon kelley. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. new this morning, one more option for getting around the bay. a new ferry service debuts between the peninsula and east bay in about an hour. christie smith live from oakland this morning with the attractive perk for riders this week. >> reporter: this would be a fun way to get to work with a newspaper and cup of coffee just riding across the bay. that is another option, a new route starting today from oakland's jacqueline square to alameda to san francisco. this boat came in, it's not the specific vote, but a number of them leaving from oakland. cost isn't bad for the first week, it's free, then adults are $7. the route goes to the $26 million terminal at the marina in south san francisco. this is, of course, another alternative to driving b.a.r.t.

or caltrain. on the other end, major companies will be offering shuttles to the job site, in fact, nine businesses are doing this. it's the first new bay area ferry since 1992. so a long time coming, and a big step toward having more ferries, network of them around bay area cities. there are three routes leaving in the morning and then two coming back on the return end in the evening. first one leaving here oakland at 6:40 this morning. reporting live in oakland, christie smith, "today in the bay." it was a mysterious discovery, somebody left a vertebrae. vertebrae outside the building yesterday morning. now, there was no note attached to the bone and the vertebrae right now being sent to the coroner's office to try and determine if this vertebrae is human. today, closure for heart broken mother who lost her husband and two sons in a mistaken identity shooting in san francisco. convicted killer edwin ramos will be sentenced today for

shooting and killing anthony bologna and his sons. ramos mistook one of them for a rival gang member and started shooting from another car. at trial he testified his passenger was the one who fired the deadly shots. it is 5:33 right now. san francisco giants player could be facing legal trouble outside of the ball yard. "today in the bay's" marla tellez is live at san jose's municipal stadium with the latest on the police investigation into pablo. >> it has certainly been a rough month for pablo sandoval who underwent surgery for a hand issue. he's rehabbing here with the giants. here's what i can tell you about the investigation, a woman claims he sexually assaulted her friday morning at the sea scape beach resort.

santa cruz county sheriff deputies say the two met thursday night in downtown santa cruz. sandoval's attorney says he voluntarily met with investigators on friday to talk about a "consensual personal relationship of a sexual nature that took place earlier that day." before the cameras, sandoval is keeping it together, seemingly unphase e unpha unfazed by the allegations. >> i'm happy, having fun, like a little kid playing baseball. >> now, as for his boss, sf giants manager is more focused on the game. >> we're referring all questions to his attorney. but for us, he's got to get ready. and that's why he's down there playing right now. >> reporter: again, to be clear, no charges have been filed against pablo sandoval.

eclipse followed tomorrow by the historic transit of venus across the sun. live at oakland space center and science center with more on all these celestial sights you can look for in the sky. bob, good morning. >> yeah, it's been quite a treat. a couple weeks ago we had the partial solar eclipse. you didn't need a telescope, but the telescope enhanced the experience. if you slept through it, this is what you missed. started around 2:00 this morning, went to around 5:00. it was a lunar eclipse. this is when the earth cast its shadow on the moon. it won't happen again until 2014. there are about 30 to 40 people here last night at the space and science center, came to the observation deck, they did get a peek before the clouds came in. including in that crowd, a father and his three sons who made the trip up. >> i thought it wasn't going to be worth it and why was i going to come here at all? >> and now? several hours later?

>> i think i was wrong. >> dad, this must be a great event. >> absolutely. get a chance to take these guys out and spend part of the evening with them. wouldn't miss it for the world. >> reporter: and around 3:00 tomorrow afternoon, one of the rarest astronomical events, when venus will be transiting in front of the sun. this event will cast a shadow on the moon. scientists hope to use the hubble telescope to see if they can detect the chemical composition of venus' atmosphere. using the telescope and basically doing to test as a technique to see if this will help them in discovering planets, a planet transiting in front of a star and what not. they're using this to test technique. venus transiting in front of the sun tomorrow 3:00 in the afternoon until sunset. obviously do not stare at the sun unless you have solar glasses or something like that.

looking good. meantime, how is all this playing out politically? president obama over the weekend said one of the reasons the jobs numbers are so bad he's failed to pass his jobs bill. taking a look at mitt romney and pointing to his record as governor of massachusetts saying he didn't do much better there. 47th in terms of job creation in the nation. but meantime, republicans are saying romney would be a better choice because president obama's policies simply aren't working. he's trying really hard, just got the wrong ideas they think. >> well, we know the next four or five months going to be fun. thank you very much. >> 5:43 right now. this morning, two pilots are dead after the air tanker crashed while fighting wildfires. so far, no exact cause of that crash. but helicopter crews told ground crews it didn't look good. the pilots were fighting a 5,000-acre wildfire that started

burning last night after a lightning strike in eastern nevada. also the crew of another fire fighting tanker had to do a belly landing after it was unable to lower all its landing gear. crew members flew the plane for 90 minutes to try to burn off that fuel before making that emergency landing at the tahoe airport. both crew members walked away without injuries. we are following a developing story out of africa. engine problems suspected in an airplane crash in nigeria. the commercial airline slammed into a densely populated area in nigeria killing all 153 people onboard and others on the ground. fire trucks didn't have enough water to put this out. so area residents had to carry buckets of water to try to douse the small portions of the flames. cnn reporting right now the pilot of the doomed jet liner was an american pilot and this crash is the worst air disaster for nigeria in nearly two decades. the search for unaccounted

troops in the vietnam war is expanding. leon panetta has announced an agreement to open three new search sites in vietnam. nearly 1,200 service members unaccounted for since the end of that war. new photos of a canadian porn actor accused of a brutal murder. these are pictures of him going through airport security. magnata is accused of mailing human body parts. officers say the torso, hand, and foot found in the mail all belong to the same victim, a university student in montreal. he is believed to be hiding out in paris. and speaking of gruesome discoveries, another one found in l.a. when a police officer there who went to check on his mother ended up finding her shot to death. the officer dropped his mother off at her home on saturday night. and when she didn't pick up his call sunday morning, the very

next morning, he went over to her house around noon and found her with a gun shot wound to the chest. lapd says no suspects and no motives for the attack. this morning, the drama and controversy over george zimmerman taking another twist. the man who shot and killed trayvon martin is accused of killing him is now back behind bars after turning himself in to sheriff deputies. jay gray live in sanford florida with another turn in the high-profile case. >> reporter: yeah, sheriff deputies here say that george zimmerman was quote quiet and cooperative his first night back behind bars. his bond revoked by the judge after prosecutors presented evidence they say shows that not only zimmerman, but his wife hid information about money they received through a website at the initial bond hearing. but the attorney for trayvon martin's family says this is

you'll need that jacket today as well as the umbrella. we've got this area of low pressure, very wide, very broad area of low pressure slated to move over california as we head throughout the day today. now, this is going to make for interesting weather conditions. we're going to get some showers, isolated pop-up thunderstorms, and over the greater bay area, not just in the north bay. it's rare to see this much rain come through this late in the season. we stop the clock at 8:00, starting to get showers. if you commute, it could become rough between the hours of 8:00 and 10:00. after noon between noon and 6:00, we'll lighten up a little bit. and by tomorrow morning, mostly clear conditions, just a few residual showers, but take a look at your highs today, down by about 10 to 15 degrees from your averages this time of year. warm you up to the low 70s tomorrow, then the upper 70s return by wednesday and thursday. we'll be back in the 80s for the upcoming weekend. good news for your beach plans if you didn't get to hit it this last weekend. 5:49. let's check your drive as you

hit the road with mike. looking to the south bay, no one hitting anything down here. that's good news, a smooth drive for the northbound routes coming up out of morgan hill, gilroy, and the santa cruz mountains. no overnight construction, things are clear through menlo park and palo alto. the bridges, 92, smooth drive for 92 all the way to the coast and half-moon bay. over here along the coast, great highway, sand removal starting at 7:00. locals through the area know you use sunset or live right along the stretch that's closed between lincoln and sloat, they'll let you to your house. we'll just warn folks south of the zoo in case you're headed there on summer vacation with the kids. the golden gate bridge across the water, can't see that nice water right here because of the low clouds and fog. i just saw a crew heading north a couple of minutes ago, but no incidents reported for the marin site.

welcome back, everybody, on this monday morning. facebook may soon let children under 13 register for accounts. something scott mcgrew says they were doing anyway. >> american law says you need your parents' permission to fill out any data on the web. so they adhered to that law by not allowing children under 13. the "wall street journal" reports facebook is working on a system where children would be allowed to have accounts connected in some way to their parents' account. you'd be able to control who they friended or what apps they connect their data to. several studies say there are millions of young children on facebook already. any parent of any junior high student can tell you this. 7 1/2 million facebook users are under 13, 5 million are under 10. a study by the sociologist dana boyd who is for my money the
